Canned pies may not be the only famous export of Fray Bentos for long if Southamptonโ€™s Gaston Ramirez carries on impressing in the Premier League. Born in the aforementioned Uruguayan town 21 years ago, this highly-rated attacking midfielder was signed by the south coast club at the eleventh hour of the summer transfer window for a club record ยฃ12m from Bologna.

His Premier League debut was something of a baptism of fire, coming on as a substitute during Arsenalโ€™s 6-1 mauling of Nigel Adkinsโ€™ promoted side, but Ramirezโ€™s talents were already in evidence. Positioned just behind lone striker Rickie Lambert, the new boy created one of the Saintsโ€™ best chances in the game with a fine pass, which Lambert ended up skewing wide.

More was to come in his first start, in Gameweek 5โ€™s home hammering of Aston Villa. Once again slotted in just behind Lambert, he gained an assist and a respectable EA Sports Index tally in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game of 21; not quite enough for bonus points but an indication of his future Fantasy potential. Despite Southampton losing 3-1 to Everton in Gameweek 6 at Goodison last weekend, Ramirez continued to shine, playing the full 90 minutes and scoring his sideโ€™s only goal.

Throughout his fledgling career goals have been a hallmark of his play, scoring 12 in 58 appearances for Bologna during his two-year stint at the club, including eight in his final Serie A season. The indications are that he could even make double figures this term if Southampton continue to pursue their attacking style of play.

While among the priciest of Southampton midfielders at 6.0 in the FPL game, Ramirez still represents something of a bargain if he continues to play in โ€œthe holeโ€. He is currently the top midfielder for the Saints in terms of FPL points per game, with an average of 4.3. Priced at 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, the Uruguayan he is also proving profitable, notching 18 points after just two starts.

Intriguingly, Ramirez looks a strong differential across the Fantasy games โ€“ only 0.4% of FPL managers have currently acquired his services, while even less (0.3%) in the Sky Sports game have decided heโ€™s worth a flutter. With a strong run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks, (FUL, wha, TOT,wba, SWA, qpr) Lambert will no doubt pick up plenty of interest, affording Ramirez the chance to sneak under the radar and plunder the points until the bandwagon inevitably begins.

Yeah, Federici -> Foster is tempting, but I think (?) Federici is due back soon, and Reading's fixtures do improve shortly, so I think it's a bit of a waste of a transfer. Liverpool coverage (in particular Suarez) is tempting given the next 2 fixtures, but I can't see an easy route to get any (not sure I want to lose any of my front 3 just yet). Cuellar/Hughes -> Gibbs is tempting also...

I'm not really in the class of GK transfer is a wasted transfer, and wouldn't trust Reading for CSs, and there is the value loss to consider.
Foster or Begovic, whichever rotates best I think could be worth as much as a defender transfer.

But there do always seem to be more pressing things to do.

Bear with me as I review my UCLF matchday 2 transfers.

    MAIN
    Mandzukic → Emenike
    - The Croat ended up playing for Bayern, but did nothing. Emenike got me 10 and is facing Benfica in the next two. Fairly successful transfer in my opinion.

    -2PTS
    Sirigu → Diego Alves
    - Was an idiot and had both PSG and Porto goalies from the start. Needed a rotating GK and figured Valencia would get a cleano versus Lille. They did, but with Diego benched ๐Ÿ˜• Still might pay off if he wins his place back for the home game with BATE in matchday 4 (when my Porto GK is away in Kiev).

    -2PTS
    Uchida → Vidal
    - Uchida didn't play, and got the boot. Vidal got 1 more point, but will probably make up for it playing Nordsjælland in the next two.

    Sum 5pts gained.

Thanks for reading this dour heap.

Why is Baines the only defender that I actually want? I really can't wait for Sagna to get back, he'll be in straight away... an absolute bargain...

I don't seem to be happy with any other defenders in my team, current or prospective ones...

With CS a rare commodity, it seems to me that spending around 12-12.5m on the other 3 seems like an option, that way I don't get upset when they fail spectacularly to get any points...

I'm thinking Hughes, Nelsen, Clyne... but I don't even like that... just cheap as chips and rotate well...

I don't think I'd be willing to invest 7m in a player I think will get 1 CS at most in the next 6... I do however see some decent fixtures at the other side of those, from GW13 onwards until the end of the season, I don't really see any tough home games for them...

I think I will take advantage of this tough spell, wait until the fall in price after mass exodus with no CS in 6, and snap them up for their good run til the end... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Zep I saw your response on the last page re- more intelligent FPL stats. I agree and I wonder how easy or difficult it would be for FPL to have stats about the top 100k users in the game. Stats such as % selected by top 100k would be most useful. It will also provide a contrast with the rest of the users in the game and would provide more realistic data of those still engaged in the game.

      Ah ok, good man...

Yeah I really think it could be better in that respect...

Another thing I forgot to mention was this idea I had about filtering teams out of the stats they do show...those teams/users who are obviously not still playing... I'd like to see FPL introduce something like a filtering system, whereby they figure out which teams/users are no longer playing and then wipe out their stats from the game... so we can view the actual proper stats and figures from REAL teams... but that would only work if there was some system in place from the beginning to distinguish how active a user would be and if everyone agreed to some sort of FPL log in monitoring... when you get down to it, it sounds quite sinister, and not everyone would like that...

But alas, it is the end result that I'm talking about, not the process...

Was just an idea, I have a lot of those, you know... some useful, some not so much... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Why not base it on whether you've made a transfer in the last 5 weeks for example?

He might be later on in the season if he keeps dropping but tbh I don't think I could ever bring myself to buy him...the thought makes me ill!

Really surprised Pienaar rose tonight, Fiso's estimations are either slightly off or he had a late surge of buyers tonight. Happy as I own him... ๐Ÿ˜€

Last time I checked Fletcher was close to a rise but I noticed at the time he had an NTI of -5...obviously people are put off by the city fixture...really frustrating that he's so close to a rise, I could do with that extra .1m!!

Yeah I'm happy he rose too, gives me that extra buffer if he did somehow happen to fall in price further on down the line, I won't be rushing to sell him since it doesn't affect his selling price (still 6.6m)...

Yeah it's nice for the security. I'm in the awkward position of owning both him and Fellaini, one of them needs to go...I had Pienaar from the start but got Fellaini in my WC to catch his rise and couldn't drop either for the southampton home match...typically neither got anything...it's tough to decide who to drop...Fellaini looks much more threatening but I love Pienaar...still not sure what to do! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I would not like to be in that position...

Pienaar for me is the long term option... but that's just my opinion...

    RVP, Pienaar, Gervinho, Clyne

I dont have RvP in my team.. but for long run i feel RvP is a must.. He s the only player who can deliver evry week.. Try to get Bale instead of Gervinho.. Gervinho is wasteful...
