We sign off on Gameweek 7 by name checking Arsenal’s Spanish schemer, looking at the potentially problematic route into United’s first XI and the upturn in defensive solidity by many of the big guns…

The Player

Arsenal’s win at West Ham, played out in front of the tv cameras on Saturday evening, afforded Fantasy managers the opportunity to run the rule over the Gunners’ assets ahead of a trip to Norwich next time out. While Arsene Wenger’s side impressed by coming back from a one-goal deficit to end the hosts unbeaten home run, there was little doubt as to the game’s chief protagonist.

Dictating the visitors’ play from his role in “the hole”, Santi Cazorla was simply a class apart. Offering a constant goal threat and providing opportunities aplenty for his team mates, the little Spaniard’s performance backed up our own ICT Index, where he leads the way after the first seven Gameweeks of the season.

After a couple of opening blank Gameweeks, the summer signing from Malaga is turning into one of the most consistent Fantasy performers around right now. Cazorla has now scored or assisted in four of his last five appearances, averaging seven FPL points per game from the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool onwards, while in the Sky Sports game, he has already received three Man of the Match awards.

While many FPL managers had considered Gervinho as an Arsenal midfield alternative due to his cheaper price and out of position role as a lone frontmen, the Ivorian’s shift to the flank last weekend saw his stock take a significant dip. Gervinho cut a frustrated figure out wide, as Olivier Giroud took the opportunity to notch his first league goal for the Gunners – Cazorla’s position as the main instigator of the Gunners’ attacking moves is nailed-on, by comparison.

With a trip to Norwich and a couple of home games against QPR and Fulham in the next four, the bandwagon is already picking up speed. Budgets are being juggled, squads reassembled, as Fantasy managers attempt to find space in our five-man midfields for a player who is starting to look irresistible for many.

The Team

A 3-0 win at Newcastle produced United’s first away clean sheet of the season, with Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley the goalscorers. While that’s all good and well for Sir Alex Ferguson, from a Fantasy perspective, the Red Devils are proving to be a real headache right now. United, clearly, have plenty of Fantasy potential – top scorers with 17 goals under their belt already, they have scored two or more times per game since the 1-0 opening defeat at Everton.

In midfield, Shinji Kagawa was subbed off midway through the second-half yet again – the fifth time in a row this has happened – while Nani failed to make the squad entirely. Antonio Valencia could, perhaps, offer us an alternative – back in the squad despite his manager ruling him out earlier in the week, he climbed off the bench at the Sports Direct Arena and comes back into contention, having provided assists in his last two starts.

Wayne Rooney’s recent to the starting XI for the first time since Gameweek 1 also muddied the Fantasy waters around Old Trafford way. Starting alongside Robin Van Persie up top for the first time in the league, he stole the limelight with a pair of assists and maximum bonus; a worrying sign for the Dutchman’s owners, with sales of the former Arsenal skipper beginning to pick up after a single goal in the last four Gameweeks. Faith in Van Persie will surely remain strong but with Rooney coming in at 11.7 in FPL and Van Persie price at 13.5, the option to free up budget and strengthen elsewhere is suddenly becoming that little bit more tempting.

The Talking Point

Without a single clean sheet between them in the opening six Gameweeks, City, Liverpool and Spurs all finally produced the goods last weekend. Investment at the back has mainly been restricted to Leighton Baines and the nailed-on Chelsea contingent, with United’s Rafael perhaps staking a case for inclusion, too, but, as the season begins to finally settle down, are we seeing a resurgence in defensive solidity from the main protagonists at last?

With United also nullifying Newcastle’s threat on Sunday afternoon, this means that four of last season’s top six defences (in terms of goals conceded) all produced the goods. With Chelsea on the verge of a tricky run of fixtures, Roberto Di Matteo’s side could be hard pushed to maintain a record that has seen them concede a mere four goals thus far – Branislav Ivanovic owners will surely hold firm but last weekend’s results hint that the Serbian may have a fight on his hands to remain at the top of the FPL defenders rankings if the pattern continues.

Surprisingly, defenders have been the top scoring FPL players in five of the first seven Gameweeks of the 2012/12 campaign. Ivanovic, Angel Rangel, Alexander Buttner, Ashley Cole and Aleksandar Kolarov have shown that the men at the back are more than capable of racking up significant scores, with only two forwards – Carlos Tevez and Luis Suarez breaking this somewhat unexpected run. With a new-found resilience possibly on the cards for a handful of new contenders, investment at the back could become a priority for many over the next fortnight as we begin to reassess our squads and plan for the upcoming Gameweeks.

I got him - but there seems better value on current form IMO.

He is always capable of goals but with tough fixture I think its time to cash him in.

I don't think why they shouldn't be able to put at least 2 against the Hammers. And WBA's tricky I know. Swansea have conceded 11 goals in their last 5, where they were at home in 3 of those, can't see much difficulties there.

I imagine thats what you're final WC team will look like? I imagine you're riding the price risers at the moment?

The team looks good albeit a bit 'safe'. A more dangerous WC team may lack RVP and be generally taking a few more educated risks. Suarez for me is a no go but perhaps I'm just biased from last years failure as a FPL prospect. I'd consider Ba as an alternative as you need Newcastle cover as their fixtures are getting good.

Aha but Suarez is only for the Reading match then I will downgrade to Ba and along with that get any City players in that are necessary. Along with that I cant think of risks worth taking atm.

Fair enough. I'm usually not a fan of having a planned transfer off the back of a WC but for RDG it does kinda make sense. In terms of risks the key thing to remember is that players appear risky because they and perhaps their team have underperformed. City defensive cover is a prime point especially with their upcoming fixtures. With Newcastle defenders on the mend even those assets may become an option once more. I guess in general this WC affords you the chance to make a few 'educated predictions' on form and not just basing it on players who did well in the past.

Well, you should not plan on transfers after using the WC really. You should have a team that'd go for at least 1 more GW without any transfers.

I want to bring in a new defender for Demel. Possibly Gibbs (if hes not injured). In order to do so i have to get rid of Hazard (keeping Santi Michu Sterling and Pienaar). Who should it be: Ben Arfa, Forehead or Mata. Leaning towards the first two since Chelsea have a tough couple weeks ahead.

What are peoples thoughts on Richards? He comes into the side and City register their first clean sheet. He even ranked second in the game for shots on goal, which is incredible for a centre half. Can we see him being a regular starter over the next 5 or so fixtures?

This is my thinking. I see no reason why he shouldn't start the next game on the back of that performance. He deserves it considering his defensive team mates have been unable to keep a cleanie while he was out injured.

If not even Lescott can nail down a guaranteed start under Mancini then I doubt Richards is going to when he is only just returning from injury. Could be an option after he gets a few games under his belt though, but saying that with Mancini you never know.

Avoid...at all costs...they got a clean sheet because Sunderland were toothless...the only way we were going to get anything out of that game was to keep it at 0-0 and nick a goal somehow but they scored after 4 mins and the game was over really.

Hmm, this is true, but it is also a reflection of City's kind run of fixtures. I suspect many of the teams that are due to face city will consider similar tactics. That is, to do anything to get something out of the game.

Indeed, none are nailed on (apart from Kompany and Hart 😉 ) But players do tend to have a run in the team for a bit. Richards and Zab had their periods in the team last year, no reason why it can't happen again. All I'm asking is, is it Richards turn to have a run in the starting team? say for the next 5 games or so.

The problem for Boswinga is really his price. Its a lot of money for a QPR defender when the likes of Nelson and possibly Fabio (when back from injury) afford better value.

Do you plan on making a transfer based on two fixtures? TBF most squads have cash to burn so I guess there is no reason why you should recognise value as an important factor anyway.

Any QPR defender at that price is an awful option at the moment. Riise I could see being some value but Hughes is 4.5...1m cheaper...but obviously Riise comes with some attacking threat...Hughes had 2 chances against Southampton so he's getting up for corners. Cuellar is decent because Sunderland are so cagey but I'm not sure yet whether their fixtures will provide CS.

Of course it's my opinion. Can you explan how he's good value when he has only play 3 full games this season? And QPR have only kept 1 CS. A few crosses doesn't make him great value.

Its all a bit slow on here so I'd thought I'd put forward my general plan over the next few weeks. My biggest problem (if you can call it that) is I have all this cash and no idea what to do with it. A possible sale of RVP at some point will have me drowning in even more money. So what can I do with it?

    Begovic, Foster

    Baines, Gallas, Clark, Demel, Davies
    Cazorla, Bale, Pienaar, Michu, Sterling
    RVP, Berbatov, Lambert

    1FT
    Bank: 4.2m

I would really like Newcastle cover soon as their fixtures are starting to clear up and I know I will need City cover for the same reason. My plan a few weeks ago also included the idea of getting Sagna once he returns.

I currently plan on saving the transfer and seeing how RVP goes against Stoke. If he goes badly I will be forced to consider Ba or Tevez/Aguero for their good run of fixtures. This as you can see will leave me with an even greater amount of cash in the bank. If I sold for Ba this week I would be left with 9.2m in the bank! So can you guys help with where I should consider investing money?

Upgrade your defence maybe? Vertonghen could be a good buy if you didn't already have Gallas. I'd consider getting Silva too for City coverage. swap Michu for him perhaps later?

Yeah I'm looking to upgrade Demel since he is injured and I'm thinking the Hammers defence has done its dash. Vertonghen is a good buy but I think Caulker/Gallas offer outstanding value in comparison. I've considered City defence but what are your thoughts about Johnstone?

For the record, it's Johnson. Caulker isn't nailed on for starts...Vertonghen is way more attacking than Gallas and could play Left back some games...Gallas is good value if Spurs keep some CS but Vertonghen offers that bit more and if you have the cash it could be worth it.

I think he is as good a choice going forward. Reason is that liverpool a fairly solid , if boring team who in theory should keep quite a few clean sheets. Johnson should also get some attacking points and is at the cheapest price he has been for many seasons

Martinunreal has a point about the fistures, it is annoying as it was the next fixture against Southampton where he could actually be useful , but will probably miss.

Just my memories from last year. Not trying to be rude or anything, but a ton of his value came in garbage games against the bottom teams.

It's a shortcoming of this site that it condenses the stats from prior years. You can find them on ESPN Soccernet. Here's a link, but if it doesn't work, go to the United page, find the squad listing, click on Valencia and then go to the Appearances tab and reset it to 2011-12.

It doesn't include the bonus points, and you will have to do the math if you really want to break it down, but you'll see that of 6 goals and 15 assists on the year, 3 of the goals and 10 of the assists came in matches vs Villa, Blackburn, Wigan, Wolves, and QPR

Hmm, interesting. The main point of not though is that last year we tended to have a big 5 in midfield so were able to rotate him anyway. If we were to sell RVP and go for Tony V then we should have the cash available to rotate a big 8 in midfield and attack according to fixtures.

That haul came in seven games (2 vs Wolves). And 2 of the goals and 2 assists came in non-Prem matches. That means that in the other 27 Prem games that he played in, he came up with 1 goal and 3 assists. (unless my math was off somewhere, I'm doing this in head in interest of time)

Looking at his points total over the 2100 minutes he played he has one of the highest average points per minute in the whole PL. You must have got it a bit wrong somehow surely. He was also in and out of the side a bit due to competition but it seems he has finally ousted Nani in the starting 11 which could also make a difference this season.

Perhaps, I sure didn't crank it out down to the minute, but then when you start him, you don't get his points per minute. No problem, and you're welcome! I just remember a whole bunch of H2H matches I was in during the end-run last year, many of them in the FPL Open Cup that I squeaked through to win, where my opponent had Valencia and he put up little numbers, to my great joy.

If there were any players in the league that you wished was a differential and had any chance of potentially scoring from anywhere/assisting and also on free kicks and maybe penalty's....ITS ROONEY

PS Rooney is a more well rounded player than RVP IMO, RVP scored a few hatricks last season which is freaky on anyones standards (except messi/ronaldo), so no way he will replicate last seasons tally. but theres no denying RVP is one of - if not the best striker in england.

Well, I am on my wildcard. Did 4 draft teams.
Which one do you prefer? And kindly state your reason. Thanks 😀

    a)
    Foster
    Baines / Ivanovic / Vertonghen
    Silva / Bale / Cazorla / Michu
    Ba / Jelavic / Berba
    Begovic / Puncheon / Hughes / Fonte

    b)
    Foster
    Baines / Rafael / Vertonghen
    Silva / Bale / Cazorla / Pienaar
    Ba / Tevez / Berba
    Begovic / Puncheon / Hughes / Fonte

    c)
    Foster
    Baines / Simpson / Vertonghen
    Silva / Bale / Cazorla / Mata
    Ba / Jelavic / Berba
    Begovic / Puncheon / Hughes / Fonte

    d)
    Foster
    Baines / Ivanovic / Vertonghen
    Mata / Bale / Cazorla / Pienaar
    Ba / Tevez / Berba
    Begovic / Puncheon / Nelsen / Fonte

    Or any other advise?

Sigh, that's actually what is worrying me. I can't really slot RVP in, everything become unbalanced.

        Well, did some tinkering,
        Foster
        Baines / Rafael / Vertonghen
        Duff / Bale / Cazorla / Pienaar
        Ba / RVP / Berba
        Begovic / Puncheon / Nelsen / Fonte

I really like this. I can't really decide on City coverage myself. Don't have enough faith in any striker to invest, don't really like what Silva is doing right now, and can't fathom backing another MF.

Yeah, I want Sagna from GW11 also. The one good thing about dropping Bale temporarily (at least for me) is that I bought him at 9.5m, so I don't lose any value. mcy, ars, WHU, LIV, ful, eve are a pretty torrid run of games.

If Rooney was rotated between his midfield role that he's playing now and playing up front he would an unbelievable FPL asset. When in midfield he'd get buckets of assists and up front he'd chip in his fair share...It's kind of making me tempted to go for him at some point...there's a lot to like about him.

Problem is that he's overpriced for a midfielder because he will only get "forward points (3 per goal)" for his goals, whether he produces from midfield or forward. The assists are a wash, but you aren't paying top forward dollar to get a bunch or even a bucket of assists.

He'd play more in midfield and his FF points would drop. Might get more assists but they're equal points for strikers or mids. Any goals he'd get would be strikers points rather than the extra for a midfielders goals.

Nolan has 2 good fixtures then they get tough. Duff is getting the points but he's not historically a huge points scorer. Walters has good fixture after the Man Utd game...Morrison is doing well but has City next. Lallana is also a good shout, 3 assists in 3 games.

Ramirez is injured. Dembele = no because he's not attacking enough and Spurs have way better attacking options. Routledge is a rotation risk with Hernandez and Dyer there. McAnuff could be a great punt as he's getting assists regularly and Reading's fixtures are nice enough. Snodgrass...fixtures working against him but looks a very dangerous threat and Norwich's main guy (set pieces/Corners etc)

Wilson is more nailed on than Wilkinson. No LB threat to Wilson but Huth and Cameron can both play at RB putting Wilkinson at risk.

B but your defence isn't balanced. Lose Baines or Ivanovic to get better defenders.
