In recent years, Arsenal have enjoyed something of a golden age when it comes to front men. From Denis Bergkamp through Thierry Henry to Robin Van Persie, a dynasty of virtuosos has consistently carried a winning tune in harmony with, or more recently in spite of, the supporting ensemble. Never has Arsenal’s reliance on its soloist been more pronounced than last season, and few would envy the weight of expectation thrust upon new signing Olivier Giroud following Robin Van Persie’s 11th hour defection to United at the start of this campaign.

If the acquisition of master conductor Santi Cazorla and the seasonable resurgence of the much-maligned Gervinho have breathed new life into last season’s moribund backing band, Giroud’s initial contributions were conspicuously off key. Gently removed from the spotlight by Arsene Wenger in Gameweek 4, the Frenchman was eased into the fray from the bench over the ensuing clashes, and with Arsenal’s strong team performances somewhat lifting the pressure on the new arrival, Upton Park experienced a Giroud awakening in Gameweek 7.

Re-installed to centre stage against the Hammers, Wenger’s decision to shift the in-form Gervinho back to his customary berth out wide was as effective for the Gunners as it was frustrating for many Fantasy managers. With twice as many shots as his nearest Premier League competitor last week and the threat stats of a thermonuclear Chuck Norris, Giroud even achieved the minor miracle of besting Santi Cazorla in our own ICT index on his way to a goal, an assist and a full house of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points.

Whilst long-term there is the possibility that Wenger will adopt the same horses-for-courses approach with his forwards as he has with his centre backs, it seems profoundly unlikely that he would puncture Giroud’s newly inflated confidence with a return to the bench over a run of fixtures that looks rosy for Arsenal’s attacking assets (nor, QPR, mun, RDG, TOT).

Conceding nine goals in their last two games, Norwich’s newfound predilection for public incontinence will be a welcome development for Wenger’s men, and a visit from the similarly leaky QPR should present further scope for big returns the following week. A tricky trip to Old Trafford may prove a gloomy exception to the rule in Gameweek 10, but the clouds are quickly dispersed by a visit from travelsick Fulham and the home leg of a North London derby with a recent history of big scores for both sides.

With the early season template teams starting to unravel, Fantasy managers are more at liberty than ever to roll the dice with their precious front three. As we scour the markets for differentials, Giroud – priced at 8.4 in FPL and 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and with ownership of under 2% in both games – could represent a strong mid-priced alternative if he can emerge unscathed from international duty over the next week or so with Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus.

It's actually somewhat tempting to go for Crouch as the budget striker with their fixtures...definitely overperformed so far but...he might prove more reliable than say Lambert for the short term...I never thought I'd consider Crouch pre-season...shocking!

He already has a budget striker in Berbatov... two is one too many...

I agree it would be tempting given their fixtures but all I can see down the road is disappointment... I can only see their defence giving consistent returns...

I'm still a bit conflicted with Berbatov. His price is that of a genuinely bargain shop striker, but can he not turn out to be an elite option in disguise?, his early stats seem to indicate so.....or he flatters to deceive

Lennon is probably the one alternative to these guys I have....to be honest logic says I should avoid Duff. Nolan may well score in SOT or wig so he's a great option. Lennon is someone I've never rated highly in FPL because of lack of goals but something tells me he's going to exceed his usual rate of attacking returns this year...Chelsea at home just isn't a nice start to getting him though is it. Lallana is someone I'd consider too...whm TOT isn't ideal though...

The way I see it is a goal from Nolan in either of those fixtures will mean the move has paid off and I think that's a strong possibility. Hmmm...

My starting team was pretty poor too. I was lucky I had a hunch about West Ham's defence so doubled up pre-season. Only taken 1 hit so far but WC'ed two weeks ago...funny how we've taken two completely different routes to get to the same place!

To be fair he's planning single transfers for the next 3 GW's...it'd be different if he was doing them all at the same time for a big hit me thinks. And let's be honest...when has a WC ever gone so superbly that you're not thinking of about 5 transfers the day after!

        haha.. what a song.

but on second thought, there are people here who previously said that "i see Baines as a midfielder with attacking potential/returns.. a clean sheet from him is like a bonus, really" ..so why cant kolarov fall into that category? okay, except the fact that he is not nailed on.. but if he does, like Platt mentions "he's close to a regular starter", am i dreaming alone or what?

Every City defender is close to being a regular starter...that's the essence of their rotation policy. If he was any cheaper I'd probably get him...it's just at 5.7 you want a guaranteed starter...Seeing as there is so little you can be sure about City's starting line-up each however he's probably the best city defender to get strangely enough as despite the lack of starts he is most likely to get a huge haul when he plays or just a simple 6 pointer. It's a real flair pick and no-one playing this game conservatively is going to go there...best of luck if you do!

yep. at 5.7 most people will get mcauley, gibbs, etc.

but if someone does the kolarov punt, and if he doesn't feature, and you have clyne, gorkss or demel to step up from the bench....aahh, THAT could be interesting.

it's big risk i know, but i have known to be taking risks all my life. best of luck to the brave ones.

      Haha...

I started very badly as usual... 900k after 3/4 weeks or something... then I remember having a few decent weeks and getting up to 100k... then I was up and down around 50k for a few weeks...

I remember being at 2k after about GW30 and managed to maintain... I got up to 223 at one point, but I fell away in the last few weeks...

I got RVP at 11.9m on a hunch right after his comeback from injury in the game against Blackburn (he didn't socre that game but I watched it and he looked very good)... that helped massively...

I never had Ba in my team, so I wasn't going to miss out on Cisse... I was a few weeks behind jumping on that bandwagon though...

Outside of RVP, my biggest success was championing Siggy from the off... I got him in a captained him in the 3-2 home game against Norwich.. he got 2 pts... most people thought I was crazy but in his next 3 games he scored 7, 15 and 8 pts or something similar... brilliant buy...

Captaincy was the biggest thing for me... mostly good, with a few blunders...

In hindsight I lament ever benching Siggy... I lost out on 30 points in the last few weeks benching 2 goal haul from him and someone else I can't remember at this moment...

That was the difference between 422 and a top 100 spot... but still chuffed at that finish...

Thanks for the opportunity to relive that in a 5 minute write up... 🙂

Nice summary! I avoided Ba and Cisse out of stubbornness because I'm a Sunderland fan...slowly realised it does not pay to back your own team unless you support a top 4 team! I only started taking FPL seriously last year...got really into it half way into last season...I think it was the Jan WC that renewed my interest. My highlight was captaining Dempsey when he got that hat-trick against Newcastle (lucky it wasn't Sunderland or I would have avoided the captaincy!) I think I was 900th in the world that week...I was chuffed!

I had RVP very early too which saved me from a complete disgrace.

I remember regretting not getting Siggy as I think I had Dyer so thought it was overkill...then Dyer got sent off one game when Siggy had scored...it was horrible!

I'm hoping I can break the top 50k this year or better with any luck... 😀

Ah yeah Dempsey, of course, had him from close to the beginning too... he was a monster last year... I was so fortunate with my picks last year, Valencia is another one who was epic for me...

I had Dempsey, Valencia, Siggy, Pienaar and Bale I think towards the end... with RVP Aguero and Cisse... looking back that was a great team...

I had 114.6m at the end of play in GW38...

Just keep your head down, and keep looking ahead of the curve, and you'll do fine... 50k is hard not to achieve if you keep at it all year...

I had Valencia too for that epic run! Johnny Evans was very handy too!

Woah, that's a lot of team value! I can't even remember mine...something pathetic...owing to my noobness about building value.

My bro came top 9k last year, I was pretty impressed. It helped that he was a newcastle fan and had Ba and Cisse without even thinking at the right times! I put down his success mainly to his allegiance! 😀

I came 164k playing fairly casually so would be disappointed not to better it by at least 100k this year!

Does Fletcher, Hazard and Fellaini for Silva, Bale and Berbatov (4 points) make sense? I think it does as I can do without Chelsea coverage for their fixtures considering I have no City atm. When I want some Chelsea again I will have the choice from Haz, Mata, Oscar and Torres... just worried coz it will be my 4th hit already! Was only planning on 2 (Fletch and Haz > Silva and Berba) but Fellaini > Bale should be worth the 4 if he's out right?

Fellaini > Bale and leave it at that?

      Hazard is away to Spurs
      Silva is away to WBA

Not much making me think that move is ESSENTIAL right now.
Fletcher > Berbatov is moving one striker at home to Newcastle to an injured striker at home to Villa.
Is the hit really worth it overall?

If you do all those moves and Hazard out...you're just buying another midfielder in the same game (Bale) for a 4 point hit essentially. Who says Hazard won't outscore Bale?

Ha, I noticed the newcastle away game and thought of this too! Although personally I think he prefers scoring against Sunderland! But you have a point. Plus City at home, while being an unappealing fixture...he's also at home where he is scoring...so yes in a way he might be worth keeping for longer than 2 games...and you could just bench him if you felt like it.

Can you afford Sterling or McAnuff?

They're both decent options...but neither is guaranteed to start unfortunately. I went Sterling on the back of his assist, the fact he seems to be nailed on right now and the potential he has playing in a bigger side alongside Suarez/Gerrard to smash them in.

A few injuries for Wigan midfielders and Miyaichi will become a good option imo!

      Bad for Wales...

Good for Scotland, Spurs and FPL owners...

Brilliant for me twice then... 🙂

You're a Scotland and Spurs owner? I never would have guessed...owning a country is mightily impressive.

Were you born in Scotland? Your name certainly sounded Scottish to me but it says you're from Australia?

Ah I see, very nice. Are you enjoying it out there? Would you say the move has benefited your FPL career? 😀

Well yeah it kinda did, as I was here when I achieved my decent rank last year...

I moved out here in August 2011... the same week as our free WC... I remember being rushed about and that I couldn't really look much at my team, so I just picked a quick team and left it...

Needless to say it was shite...

Seems minor. Shouldn't be a problem for Spurs.

When is Torres going to be an option again. He is only a couple of points off first in the striker rankings. He is also a rare nailed on big hitting forward who plays for a strong team.

He's the best or second bese option to get in Chelsea side now.. Too bad that his fixtures are not looking good.

I'm tempted to get him once Chelseas fixtures clear up. Mata, Hazard and Oscar can all take points off each other when they have a good game.

I think the answer is NOW or rather he has never not been an option...There's plenty of reason why people were put off however. If you plan on keeping Hazard it seems a bit much to have Torres too at his price. I was thinking at the start of the season Torres has the potential to exceed expectations given the monopoly of chances he will have relative to other strikers. Regardless of his dip in form over the last year it would be hard for any striker to struggle to score goals in a team like Chelsea considering their creative midfield. I still think he will prove frustrating to own though, The price tag is a bit off-putting if you want to have RVP and another 7m+ striker.

I think it will be necessary to see a bit more confidence from him to full jump aboard but I think he is getting there... finally.
