Without the pull of our usual Gameweek schedule, we thought we’d do a little background work on the upcoming international games. While we’ll be covering the games as always with Scout Scribbles articles, this piece is just a heads-up look at some of the main Fantasy protagonists set to feature for their respective nations over the next few days:

Kicking off close to home, Frank Lampard and Ryan Bertrand have both pulled out of the England game against San Marino with knee and throat problems respectively. The Chelsea duo have returned to Stamford Bridge and will be assessed prior to Tuesday’s clash against Poland. Steven Gerrard is also unavailable for Friday’s match due to suspension.

The likes of Gareth Bale, Ashley Williams, Ben Davies, Joe Allen and Aaron Ramsey are all part of Chris Coleman’s Wales squad to face Scotland and Croatia over the next few days, while Craig Levein has named several Premier League players in his squad. James Morrison, Steven Fletcher, Shaun Maloney, Charlie Adam, Danny Fox and Russell Martin are amongst a host of names expected to feature.

John O’Shea, Shane Long and Jon Walters are included in the Republic of Ireland squad, though James McClean and Glenn Whelan have both withdraw through injury. Northern Ireland have Fulham duo Aaron Hughes and Chris Baird amongst their numbers, with United’s Jonny Evans also included.

Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta face a home clash with Uruguay before a trip to Chile in the early hours of next Wednesday morning. Argentina’s second match takes place around 1am, with both players then flying home ahead of Saturday afternoon’s trip to West Brom – Zabaleta’s owners may have some concerns then, particularly with Micah Richards available and Vincent Kompany expected to be fit. Although Carlo Tevez’s owners will undoubtedly be happy he is not involved, Roberto Mancini was highly critical of the forward’s conditioning after the last international break. After flying back to his homeland, Tevez’s fitness took a dive – indeed, he has failed to score since then, backing up his manager’s theory that he has lost a little sharpness.

Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates are part of the Uruguay squad to face Argentina. The Liverpool pair also have a trip to Bolivia on their agenda – this game takes place on 9pm Tuesday evening, affording them plenty time before Saturday’s home clash with Reading.

As the hosts for the 2014 World Cup, Brazil have a couple of friendlies on their agenda. Intriguingly, both their matches are in Europe, meaning no long-haul flights back from South America are required. From a Fantasy perspective, Rafael’s owners can fret a little less – he has been left out of the squad. Last night’s game with Iraq saw Chelsea trio Oscar, Ramires and David Luiz all start, with Oscar bagging a brace in the 6-0 win. Spurs midfield enforcer Sandro climbed off the bench with less than 10 minutes remaining for Mano Menezes’ side.

The ever-growing Belgian influence in England’s top-flight is highlighted by the fact that 10 players have been called up by Marc Wilmots to face Serbia and Scotland over the next few days. While Marouane Fellaini has subsequently withdrawn due to a knee problem, Fantasy owners of Vincent Kompany, Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen will be keeping a keen eye on the Belgium defence. Further up the pitch, Eden Hazard, Moussa Dembele, Kevin Mirallas, Romelu Lukaku and Christian Benteke are also involved.

Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque has perhaps heeded Roberto Di Matteo’s advice by leaving Juan Mata out of the squad to face Belarus and France. Having played in Euro 2012 and the Olympics, Mata struggled to make an impact in the opening month of the season but is fast approaching form and fitness following a series of fine displays for the Blues. Fernando Torres, Santi Cazorla and David Silva owners will be hoping the trio come through unscathed.

Laurent Koscielny has recovered from a knee knock picked up in training with the France squad. While Yohan Cabaye is a doubt ahead of Friday’s game with Japan, the likes of Patrice Evra, Gael Clichy, Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris are all part of Didier Deschamps’ squad. Hatem Ben Arfa and Samir Nasri’s owners can breathe a little easier – both have been overlooked for Les Bleus.

Serbia have called upon a trio of Premier League defenders for the World Cup qualifiers. Branislav Ivanovic, Aleksandar Kolarov and Matija Nastasic are in line to square up to Belgium and Macedonia.

Lukas Podolksi sat out training for Germany due to a minor ankle knock but is expected to be available for Friday’s game with Republic of Ireland. Arsenal team-mate Per Mertesacker is the only other Premier League based player in Joachim Lowe’s squad, with a home clash against Sweden also to follow.

Robin Van Persie’s owners are bracing themselves ahead of Holland’s games against Andorra this evening and Romania next Tuesday. The United forward started both of his nation’s games in the previous international break – he was handed the full 90 minutes against Romania before being subbed off at half-time in the 4-1 win in Hungary.

Several Premier League stars will participate in the Senegal v Ivory Coast match on Saturday, with the result set to have a significant impact domestically. The hosts need to overcome a 4-2 deficit from the first leg in order to advance to the African Cup of Nations in January – if they fail to do so, Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse will be available for Newcastle after the New Year. Yaya and Kolo Toure, Gervinho, Cheick Tiote, Arouna Kone and Guy Demel are all included in the Elephants’ squad.

Jurgen Klinsmann has named five Premier League players in the US squad to face Antigua and Guatemala over the next few days. Clint Dempsey is the main Fantasy concern, while Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, Geoff Cameron and Maurice Edu are also involved. The Antigua clash kicks off on midnight Friday, while the Guatemala game takes place at 00.15 on Wednesday morning. Staying with the North American qualifiers, Javier Hernandez has a couple of games for Mexico on his agenda – the United forward flies to Guyana before playing host to El Salvador at 2am Wednesday morning.

    I love this starting team.

Hart, Walker, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines, Carrick, Cleverley, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rooney, Welbeck

No Cashley, no Glen Johnson, no Milner, no Terry, no Lampard.

This is the future. Obviously they'll be a place for Gerrard, but other than that it's the best they've got at the minute.

It's a really nice team. I love the club partnerships implemented in the midfield and attack, should help give England some needed chemistry. San Marino have no chance.

Got a few opinions yesterday, but any PS3 owners recommend any of these...
    Infamous
    Bioshock
    Batman: Arkham City
Metal Gear Solid 4 (do I need to have played the others? Could get the collection)
God of War 3 (could also get the collection of the first 2)
    Resistance
Mass Effect (a trilogy box is out soon I think)
    Killzone
    Battlefield 3
    Max Payne 3
Any others? Only have Uncharted, Red Dead, GTA, Ratchet & Clank so looking to extend the library a bit!

Replied yesterday, see you've added a few more!

MGS4 is awesome if you enjoy stealth games - its nothing like the other shoot 'em ups on your list though so it may not be for you. Prince of Persia Collection is great too.

I've played MGS before and seen good reviews. I've never really tried first person shooters so want to try a few. That's why I was thinking Bioshock etc. More into the third person shooters/platformers/open world, hence the games I own.

D: Baines II Ridgewell II Clyne II Demel II Harte
M: Hazard II Yaya II Piennar II Michu

F: RVP II Tevez II Lambert

    This game week should I:
    A) hazard to Cazorla
    B) Harte to cheap defender
    C) Tevez to Berba
    D) save the transfer or
    E) something completely different

Hazard seems to be out of favour and Cazorla seems to be hot atm, but is he going to score enough goals?

      Who's your 5th mid?

Seeing as your defence is in tatters I'd do Harte to Cuellar this week.
Mid and forwards are fine - Tevez is still a great option not sure Berba (or anyone else) offers as good value.

I have Mata, Cazorla, Michu and Bale and Rafa, Baines and Vert in the back with Aguero, Ba and Berbs up top. Not sure why the defense has to be cheap? Those 3 are not cheap in the back but i do not feel i am making any sacrifices anywhere. No better feeling then watching a defender score. Almost always means bonus points also. It feels that the differential this year could be who we have in the back and if we are willing to spend a bit.
If we look at the midfielders from Bale to Dyer there is an 11 point difference but there is 15 players inside that difference. If we grab Baines to Rafael there is also an 11 point difference but there is only 4 players inside that difference. It tells me that if you really want some separation find high scoring defenders if possible. Just my opinion

    Thoughts on Hba?

I will wc after gw 8 and newcastle have some nice home fixtures where hba should give good returns. However I am a bit concernd with his recent performance and the fact that he gets little inside the box (scores from far out..)

I will probably go with aguero berba and jelly upfront. Hba will be my newcastle coverage. Giving me:

    Bale santi hba walters puncheon/granero
    Jelly aguero berba

The obvious would be to get pienaar and ba instead, however, my leagu leader has that pair... I am looking for differentials and like the jelly option more than ba.

    Thanks for any advice;)

Just go with who you think will get the most points...

Don't worry about differentials at this stage, especially if they don't score as much as the other 'non differentials'...

The thing is i like jelly as my everton coverage (also have baines) therefore no place for ba upfront... Which leaves me with hba in midfield.

Dou you think hba will come good?

Alreet lads. How's it going? I haven't been on all week as i've got a new job where I actually have to do stuff all day, and somebody actually cares about what I do. Its a bit of a novelty for me after 6 years of doing as I please, but i'm actually enjoying it so far, even though it means i can't get on here as much as I would like.

I saw a couple of posts from TW about a Kolarov punt. And I actually quite like it. You could call it points chasing, but I prefer to see it that his points haul at the weekend, reminded me of the possibilities. He would fit in perfectly to my balanced squad strategy as a wild card. I would bring him in for demel (my 5th defender) and start him every game. Knowing full well that he will miss many of the games. But with Wilson as my 4th defender, and no bench sitting mid, I think I should be able to cover that. I was worried about his 5 minute cameos, but then realized he only has one so far this season. So it is usually all or nothing for him. Any way to check this for last season?

    Any thoughts on this?

I have the exact money to do Demel + Fellaini + Fletcher to Kolarov + Nolan + Berbatov for a 4pt hit. If I avoid the hit, I will have to go without Nolan and get a 6m mid. Worth doing the hit, or can we think of another mid to go for? Ramirez would have been perfect.

I think that even without cameos, the number of games he will miss means that your backup has to be very good because you can't really plan for good rotation. That makes his effective price much higher than it seems on the surface.

Say you need to spend an extra 1.5m to shore up the backup, that makes him 7.3m so you have to evaluate him on those terms. For that reason, I'm out.

It makes sense but sounds expensive to me. I'd rather get a 6.0m defender who plays every week with some attacking threat and spend the extra 1.5m elsewhere.

But I'll be interested to see if the strategy pays off for you. If it does, I'll copy it in my January WC. You're my poison taster 😉

Nah. I change my mind every day. I definitely haven't decided to get kolarov for sure.

One thing that I have decided on, as that I am not going to get a manchester forward, until at least the january WC. I want to give this strategy a proper go, without kneejerking at the first RVP hat trick. So that means I won't need the cash for a big hitter

RVP isn't the only big hitter.
At some point there will be plenty of big hitters on form. The way your team is currently set up there is no chance of getting Rooney/RVP/Aguero without multiple transfers and the only expensive player up front is Suarez. Then there is the midfield and at the moment your only option to bring in a form midfielder (Mata for example) is ditching Cazorla or Bale which I don't like, it leaves little flexibility.
But that is just me..I tried balanced last year and it made everything difficult and I couldn't catch up until the second half of the season. Committing yourself on something up until the next WC also..really?

2 big hitters in midfield is standard, what I mean was with no cash up front and a balanced team it would mean say 3 transfers to bring in a player on form and no weaken your team rather than 1 or 2.

Kolarov to gorks would give me enough to upgrade barfa to a 9.6m or suarez to aguero with a maximum 4pt hit. So its not exactly killing my flexibility.

If he doesn't start there's still always a risk that he will get you 1pt. If you factor in the large hauls with the array of 1pts then he will probably be worth less than similarly or cheaper priced defenders who rely on the bread and butter of clean sheets.

McCauley, Risse, Wilson will all get more points over the coming weeks for cheaper cost.

    Here goes. Wild Card time....

    Going from

    Jussi/Foster
    Demel/Fonte/Jagielka/Hangeland/Williams
    Pienaar/Feliani/Hazard/Cazorla/Britton
    Suarez/Fletcher/RVP

    to

    Mannone/Begovic
    Baines/Ivanovich/Vermelen/Fonte/Barnett
    Cazorla/Bale/Silva/Sterling/Britton
    Suarez/Jelavic/Berbatov

Reasons are i feel my new team has much less chance of rotation. only Silva really has this risk.
Strength throughout my team, especially with goal threat from back to front. Leaving the bench reasonably week, as i always do... but thats another subject.
All strikers are the 'main men' at their club. i.e RVP has Rooney, Chico, Wellbeck. Aguero has Tev, Ballotelli, Dzeko. Ba has Cisse. Podolski has Giroud and Gervinho. Defoe has Ade. Also these teams can be covered easier by the midfield than Liverpool and Fulham (Everton could be done with Pienaar or Felli)

    All comments very very welcome.

Love your defense i still worry about Iva in the upcoming fixtures. See my prior post talking about this and maybe it will help to put you at ease with a high priced defense. Thumbs up from me although i be tempted to change Iva for Rafa or Vert (although Vert does not have great fixtures either) Rafa has some tough ones coming then they have a magical run of fixtures starting in gw 11 and I do mean magical.

my reasoning behind cheap bench is they only ever get bought into the team (if you pick carefully and look out for injuries etc.) about once every 4 weeks. therefore if they score well lets say every other week then you will only get those points 1 in 8 weeks, about 5 times a season.

So spending the extra million to get a few more points 5 times a season could be used elsewhere bettter. eg the difference between Yaya and Cazorla.

Its just my thinking, might have a proper look through stats and reassess this way of thinking.

I think Sterling is about 1.5m under priced and he is my 4th mid and will play basically every game.

Britton is just a guarenteed 2 points for very cheap, and my thinking on spending money on the bench is written above.

    Gameweeks 1-7 : 1.43ppg
    Gameweeks 8-38 : 1.45ppg

    Bale:
    Gameweeks 1-7 : 0.75ppg
    Gameweeks 8-38 : 1.29ppg

    Nani:
    Gameweeks 1-7 : 2.14ppg
    Gameweeks 8-38 : 0.81ppg

Now perhaps these are simple exceptions but the correlation between the "goal-points" per game in the first seven weeks and those in the remaining 31 weeks is -38%. This could imply that any time looking at attacking threat in the first seven gameweeks is not merely wasting time but is possibly following a strategy that will yield undeperformers for the rest of the season.

It would be interesting to see what holes people can find in this argument. As far as possible, I've used unbiased statistics so there is no selective sampling going on here to try to prove a point.

Nice post. I am going to say that your sample size is just 1 though, 1 season. A hattrick in the early gameweeks could distort all the figures as it is sampled just 6 gws as opposed to 30. Uneven sampling means that freak occasions get magnified in your smaller sample.

But the article was looking at goal "threat" so it's not necessarily those who have overperformed or scored a certain amount of goals. It's the threat and therefore potential for future goals that they looked at.

Interesting analysis. I think RVP would have shown a similar effect.

For me this highlights the big hole in this site's stats - they almost never refer to actual fantasy points. It makes players like Snodgrass look attractive. I don't know if this is because of any copyrighting issues or is a deliberate strategy to look beneath the points at the underlying stats.

But I'd really like to see something like a fantasy co-efficient: the correlation, for each player, between their ICT score and their fantasy points.

Yes that is a valid point...

Sometimes the only real justification to getting a player, is getting the actual points on the board, not what their stats promise you about their points potential...

I tend to find that the ICT index will come true over the duration for the whole season. It doesn't show who is going to rip it up next gameweek but does show who will come good eventually. Thinking Sess, Moses etc. Slow starts with good ICT but came good without increasing their ICT score

Last season I found that it worked for some players but not for others. Yaya was a good example; he consistently had a high ICT score but didn't really deliver.

That's what I mean about a per-player co-efficient. For some players the ICT predicts their future fantasy scoring well, for others it doesn't.

A big factor is the "Influence" part and thats one I never look at for midfielders/forwards as it means very close to nothing for FPL returns.
Yaya, being a great player, has a high Influence score but that doesnt mean he is a goal threat or a creative player.

I agree with what your saying but I'm unsure what's missing from this...

So, can we infer that it's only down to bad luck that these players are not getting the points in situations like this, since they obviously have the good form (as ICT would indicate)?

The whole game is ultimately on luck. Something like the ICT points you in the direction to be lucky 🙂 The player themselves, I don't know. Could just show they were wasteful?

This is an interesting point. I was set on HBA until that article yesterday showed how little threat he actually offers. Other than the City game, West Ham's fixtures are not actyually that bad for the next 5-6, and he has a great threat. He may be the solution I need to my Ramirez problem (assuming I end up with one).

If I didn't already have Jelavic I'd look to get Pienaar and Ba instead, but alas.

I think the issue here is cause-and-effect.

The key assumption is that ICT is 'cause' and FPL points are 'effect'. It is important to realize that FPL points themselves from previous weeks are not 'cause'. I'll give an analogy. Let's say you have a car accident, but your friends think you are a good driver. Your neighbour does not have an accident but your friends think he/she is a terrible driver. Your friends' opinion is a much better predictor of what will happen in the future (i.e. future accudents) than whether or not you've had an accident in the past.

I don't disagree with the idea of cause and effect and see that the ICT threat is a measure of cause. But for these players, we could assume that the ICT was an indicator of their overall there which had an effect on both the GW1-7 scores and the GW8-38 scores.

Taking this a level further, we believe that ICT is a measure of ability to score points which, given how we pick players, we hope to be fairly stable. In order words

Points(1-7) caused by ICT(1-7) correlated to ICT(30-38) which causes Points(30-38). So we would expect to see a correlation between the points in those periods unless the correlation between any of those links is week. In this case, it must have been inverse at some point.

You know how we always have the 5th mid a very cheap one... now i am thinking to invest 1.1 more to have granero over puncheon and rotate him with walters, this would give the following from gw 9 onwards:

    SUN
    RDG
    QPR
    SOT
    FUL
    NEW
    AVL

They also have decent away fixtures so could play both if need be.

Worth it? Or invest the 1.1 elsewhere?

      WIG
      FUL
      NEW

I'm neither trying to encourage potential buyers nor put them off but this is a slight breakdown of Kolarov's 12 appearances last season:

    8 full appearances
1 match substituted after 67 minutes
    3 late substitute appearances
8 away games (Bolton, Blackburn, Man Utd, QPR, Sunderland, Everton, Aston Villa, Arsenal)
4 home games (Wolves, Fulham, Blackburn, Sunderland)

      He played at OT? 😯

No wonder they won 6-1 😉

Yeah played left mid and was subbed after the hour mark before City ripped it up. I remember because I owned him. 😡

          They'd already conceded, yeah?

(Well 1 minute plus stoppages, still saw 3 goals!)

Thanks a lot. That helps me a lot. Number of full appearances doesn't look promising. But he has already started 3 out of 7 this season, so is ahead of the curve on that one. Interesting that he only made 3 late sub appearances. I could live with that (especially as he has already made 1 ;))

And he'd made 2 full appearances this time last year 😉

Doesn't really matter to me though. I'm happy(ish) if he stays on the bench. I've got the squad to cover it. So only 3/38 late sub appearances. I thought it would be more.

Anyone know how he has looked in general so far this season. Real football wise, rather than fantasy? Is he likely to improve on his number of starts?

Who cares that he started around 23% of game last season, its last weeks facts that matter 😉

And he's still the highest scoring City defender 😉

If I had RVP in my squad, I wouldn't have the kolarov option. I'm just wondering if my strategy allows me to make use of the player with one of the best ppgs in the game over the past couple of seasons.

Following on from ICT, FPL points debate, a good filter could be the PPI. Someone can get a high ICT score but be wasteful in front of net and the PPI would highlight this. This would answer Suarez for example

Problem with that is that goals, assists increase PPI. You need the filter to be a predictor of future performance, not a measure of past performance. PPI is 'effect', not 'cause'.

But it would quantify the ICT cause and allow you to provide a correlation between high ICT and FPL points as Assists and goals get you the FPL points and those lovely BAPs
