In a season where the attacking exploits of a number of defenders have been quick to catch the collective eye, John Arne Riise has remained firmly under the Fantasy radar. Already, we’ve witnessed the unlikely scenario where defenders have returned the highest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul in five of the opening seven Gameweeks, with Branislav Ivanovic and Leighton Baines vindicating those who opted for big-money investment at the back:

The Fulham full-back has also impressed going forward. So far, a total of three assists is higher than any other defender, with Riise’s left-flank forays thriving in a team full of attacking menace under Martin Jol. Indeed, only Man United have found the net more times than the Cottagers, with a total of 15 goals on par with the likes of City and Chelsea.

With two clean sheets and a couple of assists in his opening three home games, Riise has so far averaged over seven FPL points per appearance at Craven Cottage as Fulham continue the strong home form produced under Jol last time round. On the road, though, while they have conceded two or more goals in three of their four fixtures, an upturn in attacking intent hints at a cause for optimism – already, they have scored half the number of away goals as they managed last season.

Picking up points at both ends of the pitch, Riise is second only to Damien Duff for points accrued for Fulham this season and he now is faced with an enticing schedule that could well bring him under scrutiny. The Norwegian has three home fixtures in the next five (AVL, EVE, RDG) and also faces a Gameweek 9 trip to a Reading side that have no wins and three points from their opening six fixtures.

Priced at 5.5 in FPL and 6.2 in the Sky Sports game, Riise is the most expensive option amongst Jol’s defence but his displays to date have justified those respective price tags. The left-back should not only comfortably surpass his total of five assist last time round but looks capable of bettering it over the next few Gameweeks, if he can continues in his current rich vein of form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Would you possibly have any money to go upwards in value? The problem is that there are only 2 viable options in my eyes which include Nolan and Morrison for a good value midfielder below//at Michu's sale price tag.

I could go up by about 1.3 (I can sell Michu for 6.8)

Morrison, Walters and Taarabt are on the list.

After a little thought, I've all but decided on Zaba > Rafael this week...

Defensively, Utd's fixtures look amazing until Jan WC... and the so-called tough games they do have could easily be 0-0 affairs... and if there were a few goals, I'd fancy Rafa to be in amongst them, since everyone of his attacking stats are right up there with Baines...

Could be a good move, considered it myself. Only off putting thing is, United need to improve defensively, conceding too many shots in the box which leads to goals. More then last year so far.

Room for improvement, but no great shakes at the moment.

    Bego Saylor Gunter Guthrie

Free transfer used this GW (yes i know its early for that) but I'm thinking of moving forward do I take a 2 week punt on RVP > City forward or do I try and improve my subs eg Gunter Guthrie and soon to be Rangel?

Ba has a partner who could find his form and start stealing some glory. Jelavic is most probably going to be the main man for Everton all season.

I don't see it like that, since on their day there anre many more players who could score for Everton...

The likes of Baines, Pienaar, Fellaini, Mirallas, even Osman...

With Newcastle, outside of Ba, it's only really Ben Arfa... and of course, Cisse who has to start scoring at some point...

        why Mcanuff?
        no walters love?
honestly i'll wait and see if i think rvp is essential or not. if i deem he is it shouldn't be too hard to downgrade to get him in. though i'm hoping valencia will be good enough united coverage

so HBA could be back on my agenda ready for hims home game GW9, then Nolan can depart for Morrison. I love it when a plan comes together. I will have no City or Chelsea coverage though, and no Bale.

I agree, the plan was to sell Johnson for Bale this week, but Ramirez's injury has changed that and I can;t afford Ramirez to Bale. The other option is to wait 1 extra week for Sagna, and downgrade Johnson, but it'd have to be for someone 5.6 or less, or else forget Nolan. Only option might be bench Ramirez this week then do Ramirez and Michu to Gera and Bale next week.

Does Ramirez--->Morrison/Walters and AJ/Michu--->Bale after work?

I would forget Nolan then if you cant get Bale. Now all my plans are working towards him.

It does with AJ, but it leaves my plans to Sagna in smoke unless I can find a way to save 0.4 on downgrading Michu (maybe Walters is the answer there)

I dont think Sagna is going to be rushed back so AW may take the decision out of your hands. Obv that is a risk not worth taking so stick to plan for Sagna.

Morrison or a 6M over Walters saves you the 0.4. Plus I doubt Stoke score enough to justify a front 8 slot.

well the plan for Sagna was to get him for Hangeland GW9. Thing going on here is I feel like I'm taking too many hits. Also had plans to getting Wilson in for Davies, but If I have Sagna, Rafa and Baines i can play them every week anyway.

    Foster

    Vertong | Ivanovic | Baines

Michu | Pienaar | Bale | Santi Cazorla | Maloney

    Torres | Jelavic (C)

    Here’s my team:
    Jaaskelainen (Federici)
    Ivanovic, Williams, Jenkinson (McAuley, Harte)
    Hazard, Pienaar, Michu, Gervinho (Kacaniclic)
    Van Persie, Tevez, Berbatov

I want to use WC in GW 9

    Federici - Begovic
Williams, Jenkinson, McAuley, Harte - Baines, Shawcross, Fonte, Gorkoss
Michu, Gervinho - Cazorla, Silva/Ben Arfa
Van Persie, Tevez, Berbatov - Crouch, Jelavic, Ba

what you think? (left 0,4). Any advice?

don't like shawX, too expensive when there's cheaper alternatives in the side and you are doubling on stoke defense.

I don't know - Dempsey seems to have slotted into VDVs spot - offers at least an equivalent threat but less injury prone. True he isn't quite the big fish he was at Fulham but better players around him would surely help improve his potential for scoring.

Then again he does have AVB as his manager - He might go on to become a great manager, but it's not going to be at Spurs.

Hi guys, what do you lot think about my current team, I think i'm sorted for the foreseeable future:

    Jussi (Cesar)

Baines, Rafael, Ridgewell (gunter & demel)

    Bale, Mata, Santi, Sahin (Sterling)

    Aguero, Jelavic, Ba

I know gunter isn't playing at the mo...looking to swap him out for Fonte maybe.

    Cheers

It's good with obvious weaknesses, but they can't be helped.

I do it every year, jeopardize the rest of my team because I love the BEAST midfield!

Thinking of spending 24.9 on defence.

    How does everyone else compare?

If you look at the points distribution of the top 10/20/30 at each position, the elite defenders are well ahead of the pack when compared to the top clusters of midfielders or forwards. IMO, two of Baines/Cole/Ivanovic are definitely worth it right now, so 26-27 on defenders could be money well spent.

In the first 7 gameweeks, i've only made transfers in 3 of them. Double FTs for the win 😀
