In a season where the attacking exploits of a number of defenders have been quick to catch the collective eye, John Arne Riise has remained firmly under the Fantasy radar. Already, we’ve witnessed the unlikely scenario where defenders have returned the highest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul in five of the opening seven Gameweeks, with Branislav Ivanovic and Leighton Baines vindicating those who opted for big-money investment at the back:

The Fulham full-back has also impressed going forward. So far, a total of three assists is higher than any other defender, with Riise’s left-flank forays thriving in a team full of attacking menace under Martin Jol. Indeed, only Man United have found the net more times than the Cottagers, with a total of 15 goals on par with the likes of City and Chelsea.

With two clean sheets and a couple of assists in his opening three home games, Riise has so far averaged over seven FPL points per appearance at Craven Cottage as Fulham continue the strong home form produced under Jol last time round. On the road, though, while they have conceded two or more goals in three of their four fixtures, an upturn in attacking intent hints at a cause for optimism – already, they have scored half the number of away goals as they managed last season.

Picking up points at both ends of the pitch, Riise is second only to Damien Duff for points accrued for Fulham this season and he now is faced with an enticing schedule that could well bring him under scrutiny. The Norwegian has three home fixtures in the next five (AVL, EVE, RDG) and also faces a Gameweek 9 trip to a Reading side that have no wins and three points from their opening six fixtures.

Priced at 5.5 in FPL and 6.2 in the Sky Sports game, Riise is the most expensive option amongst Jol’s defence but his displays to date have justified those respective price tags. The left-back should not only comfortably surpass his total of five assist last time round but looks capable of bettering it over the next few Gameweeks, if he can continues in his current rich vein of form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

So Sunderland is definitely the team to use online in FIFA 13. I haven't lost a match since using them starting last night. Fletcher can smash them from distance, as can Sessegnon. I drew a couple penalties with Johnson too 😀

Finally warming up to my man? Sometimes i just feel like doing Tevez>Giroud for a hit and living a little. But we all know it is the wrong move. I would have done it even you know mate, the thing that is stopping me is my good start to the season.

The thing is its Tevez>Giroud for a 4 point hit. I already did Hazard>Santi. It was one of them moves and as much as i want Giroud, Hazard>Santi was the right move.

Fair enough although I would consider that a slightly sideways move. I think Hazard will still do well. Once their fixtures clear up I may get either him, Mata or possibly Torres.

It was either Hazard>Santi or Tevez>Giroud mate. I was dead set on getting an Arsenal attacker. Hence, did the right thing.

All good. I would like to think I would have done the more daring move by getting Giroud. But you were probably right to take the more conservative option.

Pretty well! On an undefeated streak with sunderland on FIFA 13 lol. And I wanted your opinion on this.

      A) Fletcher, Bale, G. Johnson
      B) Fletcher, Silva, Rafael
      C) Berbatov, Silva, G. Johnson

Maybe Glen Johnson isn't the best option, but I might ship out Gibbs and I have my eye on him. Any alternatives you like?

After coming so close to winning it all last year, I've decided to take a different approach this year.
This team might be/is something we've all wanted to try but just couldn't bring ourselves to do.

    Begovic - Jaaskelainen
    Davies - Gorkss - Clark - Demel - Clyne
    Bale - Hazard - Cazorla - Michu - Pienaar
    RVP - Defoe - Fletcher

Defense s__ks/Creates problem with who to bench
    Michu -> Sahin ?
    Hazard -> Mata ?
Plan was to free up some $$ for 2 fwds to mix
In the end, just trying to have some fun and would
    appreciate any knowledge/advice. Cheers. Peace.

Winning it all last season? If you are going Suarez, Gerrard or Sterling are the ways to go. Sahin has not convinced me just yet. Hazard Mata might be a little sideways but you need to save money and upgrade that defence. I',m sorry but thats terrible.

Ah ENR, saw your post last page mate. First thing i would do is get rid of Guthrie. Reasons being with the UCL games coming in thick and fast, we are going to need that 8th attacker a
fair few times. Sterling/Puncheon/Kightly. Take your pick. I got rid of Guthrie as soon as i got the chance.

I'm thinking about a newcastle player and a City player. Either Tevez/HBA or Silva/Ba. Something to that effect. Possibly going to get rid of RVP and have Valencia as United cover. This is the general thinking at the moment.

It's basically a case of taking variables in statistical form then analysing their independent (or sometimes collective) impact on a particular outcome. Then you can identify the most significant variables for predicting that outcome.

For example, you might find that shots conceded in the box has the strongest correlation to goals conceded - so you can then avoid teams that concede a lot of shots in the box.

Yeah for attacking players I always consider their underlying stats. Players such as Cazorla may not be getting the big points yet but his stats are ominous. Although I'm a little concerned by the fact that many of the shots are outside the box.

right after 2010 world cup, suffering from lack of football stimuli and trolling (in the traditional sense, mind you) the internet for input options.

i sort of bridged the period where the original posters faded out and new ones came in due to the increased cooperation between FPL & FFS and thus the rebirth of FFS as a mainstream tool rather than a cult FPL community. though the site has gone from strength to strength, the quality of the old guard's commentary (and community) is missed.

      roy's brother johnson, alan partrigde....

those were the days. when banter was still FPL related and no one resorted to name calling.

you can't really say the same with Spurs. they have a totally different style of playing. with Spurs it's all about pace at the wings(Balennon). you think a leaky Soton defence can cope with that? i dont think so. +Vert could come up with an assist atleast..

Increasing asking price can help. When clubs bid for a player you don't want to sell reject the bid, don't ask for a huge fee as that gives them a chance to negotiate and makes the board more likely to accept it. Also as a small club there's times you can't do anything about it and just have to accept your players moving on to bigger and better things.

I've got Baines and I'm pretty happy with that from Eve. Fellaini's been getting into loads of opportunities but he's converting them pretty poorly. Just thought with Nolan and Morrison you get hugely attractive fixtures. Both scoring well enough also.

Is it a good or bad strategy/gameplan to double up Spurs, Everton and Newcastle in the form of

Vertonghen and Bale, Saylor and HBA, and Baines n Pienaar?

How do you draw the line between having too much and not enough coverage with teams? All of them have great fixtures (i think), but then again I haven't had too many clean sheets so far this season, and somehow I feel as if I would like to bring in a few players from different teams, i.e Walters, Cazorla, Mata etc.

Do any of you have 11 players from 11 different teams??? Did I just ask too many questions? 🙂

IMO.. I'd have 3 players from same team only when they are in really good form plus great fixtures. Double when good form plus not too bad fixtures.

I know have.. 2 Stoke, 2 Arsenal, 2 Everton, and 1 from WBA, WHM, RDG, LIV, CHE, TOT, MUN, NEW, and SOT. I might soon to lose one Arsenal, but don't know who to get yet.

Vertonghen is a sticky issue for me though. I missed his goal the other week because I benched him v United 🙁

At left back he is an animal, and him and Bale down that flank are points monsters....BUT...when BAE is back he will surely slot in at CB and lose A LOT of attacking potential.

Spurs fixtures are great, but they just dont seem to be able to keep a clean sheet on a consistent basis. Maybe this will change and maybe just maybe Vert will be kept at left back and BAE will have to go to rb or wait for the chance to get back in. BAE was the best left back in the league last year and I think, what, top 3 defs?

Moneys on Vert to cb, and in that case it will be byebye from my team.

Rafael is not nailed on but is a great pick for this week.
Gibbs is nailed on but Arsenal defence never excite me in the long run.
Johnson...meh. You are relying on attacking returns mainly. Plenty of 2pt'ers there.

Interesting the emergence this season of a new type of attacking midfielder; the physically imposing, previously defensive midfielder playing 'in the hole' a la Fellaini and Toure - They're so effective it's something I could really see catching on. While they might not have the finesse of a Mata or a Cazorla, the amount of chance they seem to get is incredible.

Any other potential fpl prospects in this mould?

Add Michu to that list as well. The imposing AM is definitely a commodity right now

There was a bloke on the telly last night saying that there's less time and space on the ground in modern football. Hence ther's likely more goals to be scored from the air. Crosses, corners, etc...

    What you guys think?

I did some analysis on where the chances came from last season.

Good defences concede a greater proportion of their chances through the middle (but obviously less chances than bad defences)

As the defences got worse (in terms of goals conceded) the more chances they conceded down the flanks, and the greater the proportion of their shipped goals were conceded came from out wide.

Michu remains something of a n enigma to me. Clearly after this week Swansea's fixtures take a bit of a turn (although they are not as bad as it would first appear, and this leads people to think that he's sellable (something I'm still considering).

Yet this is a guy who last year scored 15 league goals in a team that struggled, much like Swansea are at the minute. Last year we all thought Dempsey was essential as he was scoring goals from midfield. He got 17 last year, so if Michu is likely to get something similar (he has 5 already) then why is he not essential? Swansea will still create chances and he is the most likely man to score them.

It's something I like to see FF run an article on.

Yeah I think he will still do well. His goal involvement will probably be the highest for Swansea

I'm also a Michu owner but I don't think he is anywhere near essential.
He had a brilliant start to the season yet he has only scored against qpr, WHU, SUN and RDG. Now that his fixtures have taken a turn for the worse, I don't he will be scoring with the same ease.

Also, he has only scored one goal in 4 games and returned 3 blanks in a row prior to last week.

Even if he scores a brace this week, I think I will be selling him (to HBA)

I still plan in selling him, but I'm not sure for who, i think it will be HBA, Morrison or Walters

Barfa's fixtures are awesome! When I bring him in, he'll be set up for WBA, liv, WHU, SWA, sot, sto, WGN.

Morrison is looking like good value and a good differential though.
Not a fan of Stoke attacking players.

I have doubled up on Everton (Baines & Pienaar), Fulham (Hangeland & Kaca) and currently have two Swans in Michu and Rangel. However, after this week I'm going to take a hit to get rid of both Michu and Rangel and bring in Wilson and Barfa which means I'll double up on Newcastle (Ba & Barfa)

Baines n Peanut here. That double Fulham doesn't do much for me mate at all sorry. Hange, Kaca, Michu and Rangel don't excite at all.

        I like ur hit idea.

Michu and Rangel were just for their fixtures and I very happy to be shipping them out for double Newcastle.

Kaca is merely a benchwarmer so I guess you could say it's barely a double up.
