Among Stoke’s “jolly green giants,” as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson referred to the Staffordshire side earlier this month, Peter Crouch stands tallest. Unlike the more robust looking of Stoke’s leviathans such as Robert Huth, however, Crouch’s freakishly long, fragile looking 6 foot 7 inch body means he is too often underestimated as a footballer. This allows his deft touch and at times prolific goal scoring ability to frequently catch teams unaware.

For England, he has scored an impressive 22 goals over his 42 appearances between 2005 and 2010, whilst during his three year spell at Liverpool, which came to an end in 2008, he also scored 22 goals, including a “perfect hat-trick”, with his head, left foot and right foot, against Arsenal in 2007. The previous year Crouch’s assist for Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the FA Cup final proved another highpoint in his career.

It is not just opponents that often underestimate this 31-year-old, though; Fantasy managers are also often too quick to dismiss Crouch.  Owned by just 9.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 0.8% of managers in the Sky Sports game, he has emerged as a key differential as Stoke’s fixture list significantly improves over the next eight Gameweeks (SUN, nor, QPR, wha, FUL, NEW, wba, avl).

Whilst Stoke’s opening run of games have been among the toughest in the Premier League, Crouch has already performed well, though, accruing 46 points in the FPL game, with four goals, an assist and 11 bonus points to his name. He is now ranked fifth in the FPL game among strikers in terms of total points – only Ba and Fletcher have collected more bonus points thus far.

Slowly but surely Fantasy managers are beginning to look beyond his tall frame and see the genuine footballing prospect that lies beneath. He has risen 0.2m in the FPL game over the last eight weeks, where he is now priced at an affordable 6.7m. Those setting the prices in the Sky game are perhaps less naive about Crouch’s potential and have slapped him with an 8.8 valuation but he could prove to be worth every penny if this lanky titan can continue his fine form over the kind looking schedule ahead.

The major issue surrounding Crouch as a prospect is whether there is room in our three-man FPL forward lines to find a space for the Stoke striker. With the likes of Steven Fletcher, Demba Ba, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert all vying for our attention in the low-to-mid-price bracket, there are plenty of viable up front alternatives also to consider over the next few matches.

In addition, having recently favoured a 4-5-1 due to a punishing opening schedule, Tony Pulis is expected to return to a 4-4-2 as the fixtures ease. Jon Walters offers an alternative route if he is moved back up top – classified as a midfielder in FPL and with spot-kick duties also under his belt, the Irishman is also expected to pick up plenty new suitors and could be a better fit for some.

Shall I use my FT this week to do Giroud to Ba?

Hate to take someone out ahead of a home game against QPR, especially considering I only took a punt on him last week on my WC. and at only 1.5% ownership could be a real differential.

However Ba's threat is much greater and he is more assured of a start.

So out or not? Or shall I wait til the week after before the United game?

I did this and I'm wondering exactly the same, and the worse part is I put in Giroud as a punt instead of Ba himself..

I'm swaying towards Ba at the moment, so knowing my luck Arsenal will destroy QPR

I'm thinking given Arsenals form in the last two matches, even if they win it may just be a scrape. Caz may be enough cover. Newcastle are looking more of a unit and Ba is on better form. So I think I'll do Giroud to Ba tonight and just forget about that punt.

    2. RVP out - Rooney in

Tonight was a massive indicator of just how important Silva is to City. Without him they just lacked that extra spark. They may get away with in the PL, but not in Europe

It's nothing to do with Silva...it's down to the defence. They would still have conceded 3 with Silva on the pitch and that is just not good enough.

I think Yaya is overrated. Their midfield was too flat today. Ajax had loads of space to pass it between City's strikers and midfield. Yaya plays better when he has someone like Silva in front of him, coz Silva will carry it forward and play it out wide, and Yaya has space in midfield to run into then.

Like I said earlier anyway, there seems to be a lack of harmony at City.

Offers more of an attacking threat Taylor, so yes. I'd be a little concerned that he started from the bench v Sunderland (back from injury) as Williamson is playing rather well. Everton are leaky at the back as well. But having an OOP midfielder is potentially rewarding. However, considering Swansea aren't at their best, and Liverpool always seem to up there performance in the big games id go Sterling myself, confidence on the back of last weeks game as well.

Personally I'm playing both in a 343 coz of Pienaar ban.

Bookmarked. I remember a season ago when spurs failed to beat wolves home and away when they were whipping boys. AVB in charge makes them even dodgier

    Whoa!! Teddy's on fire!

76 in UCL, joint 68th for matchday rank.

Also 54th overall in Metro CL.

My combined FPL + UCL score for the week = 160! Must be ff karma for Arsenal losing...

    Evening all.

Like many, I was all set to sell Michu this week, and possibly like a few it was my 1FT to transfer out for Walters. Walters fixtures are surely too good to miss?

It's a result that I will already get 0.1m extra now, but should I keep?

Pienaar's fixtures after Liverpool are too good. Would seem an unnecessary transfer imo.

Assuming injury news doesn't spring too many surprises what do you think of:

    Jelavic + Ramirez > Tevez + Maloney (-4)

Would captain Tevez and Maloney then rotates like a charm with Sterling.

Depends on Ramirez's fitness of course.

Out of position - so a defender playing in midfield or a midfielder playing up front.

OOP = Out Of Position, this is a plus thing if they're a midfielder on the game playing up front in real life. Would be a negative thing the opposite way around.

What is the effect of fatherhood on a players performances???

    A) theyre shattered so play worse
    B) Have a new found vitality and play better

I just seem to remeber a few occasions where players put in huge performances after becoming a dad. Obvs dont remember any poor ones tho.... (Im just considering captaining Bale, thats why)

If he's your best captain choice then go for it. Many players will have had a kid on non-matchdays that are barely mentioned and so never factored in.

Liking the reduced stress this season of not worrying about who to bench each week, with Guthrie. Even if I transfer him, will probably just be for a 2/3 pointer a week player like Mikel. Hated all those wasted Victor Moses points of last season. I just like picking a relatively fixture proof 4 midfielders and front 3 each week.
