Among Stoke’s “jolly green giants,” as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson referred to the Staffordshire side earlier this month, Peter Crouch stands tallest. Unlike the more robust looking of Stoke’s leviathans such as Robert Huth, however, Crouch’s freakishly long, fragile looking 6 foot 7 inch body means he is too often underestimated as a footballer. This allows his deft touch and at times prolific goal scoring ability to frequently catch teams unaware.

For England, he has scored an impressive 22 goals over his 42 appearances between 2005 and 2010, whilst during his three year spell at Liverpool, which came to an end in 2008, he also scored 22 goals, including a “perfect hat-trick”, with his head, left foot and right foot, against Arsenal in 2007. The previous year Crouch’s assist for Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the FA Cup final proved another highpoint in his career.

It is not just opponents that often underestimate this 31-year-old, though; Fantasy managers are also often too quick to dismiss Crouch.  Owned by just 9.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 0.8% of managers in the Sky Sports game, he has emerged as a key differential as Stoke’s fixture list significantly improves over the next eight Gameweeks (SUN, nor, QPR, wha, FUL, NEW, wba, avl).

Whilst Stoke’s opening run of games have been among the toughest in the Premier League, Crouch has already performed well, though, accruing 46 points in the FPL game, with four goals, an assist and 11 bonus points to his name. He is now ranked fifth in the FPL game among strikers in terms of total points – only Ba and Fletcher have collected more bonus points thus far.

Slowly but surely Fantasy managers are beginning to look beyond his tall frame and see the genuine footballing prospect that lies beneath. He has risen 0.2m in the FPL game over the last eight weeks, where he is now priced at an affordable 6.7m. Those setting the prices in the Sky game are perhaps less naive about Crouch’s potential and have slapped him with an 8.8 valuation but he could prove to be worth every penny if this lanky titan can continue his fine form over the kind looking schedule ahead.

The major issue surrounding Crouch as a prospect is whether there is room in our three-man FPL forward lines to find a space for the Stoke striker. With the likes of Steven Fletcher, Demba Ba, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert all vying for our attention in the low-to-mid-price bracket, there are plenty of viable up front alternatives also to consider over the next few matches.

In addition, having recently favoured a 4-5-1 due to a punishing opening schedule, Tony Pulis is expected to return to a 4-4-2 as the fixtures ease. Jon Walters offers an alternative route if he is moved back up top – classified as a midfielder in FPL and with spot-kick duties also under his belt, the Irishman is also expected to pick up plenty new suitors and could be a better fit for some.

    So what do we think of Cazorla after all this? Drew another blank today. I don't buy into the myths of assisting the assister or playing too deep, but it's hard to say for sure what kind of FPL prospect he is on this sample and the time is ticking. Some other players in his price range are really tempting.

    I have to say I've looked at flogging him for Juan Mata, even with the way the fixtures lie.

        Yeah that's really a downside of Cazorla - that we don't know how the players around him will do. In a similar situation you'd always back someone around Fabregas to finish off a few of his passes, but Gervinho, Podolski and Giroud just might not.

          Plus, if you stop Cazorla, you stop Arsenal and teams are starting to do that. Different story with Chelsea, you can't just throw two men on Mata becasue they have an abundance of talent.

          yeah don't think hazard will be worth his current price with mata and oscar in town now, but he looks fine for his tarting price. like at lille i see him as a class assister with a large chunk of his goals being penalties (therefore lampard dependant).
          cazorla is an assister with no one to assist. oh and his corners are about as threatening as a blind man holding a banana, apart from his obvious goals arsenal miss rvp's corners too

      Doubt this will get read after all those before me but I think there is an explanation and it's Arsenal creating from the flanks in recent years. Fullback and winger combinations. When the flankers aren't on form we struggle. Even those in the center are looking to feed the flanks. So even if cazorla isn't technically assisting the assister, it might be 2 or 3 passes back. Ramsey did the same last year, and he at least had RVP ahead of him in the centre which we don't know.

      Applying this to today, Ramsey and Podolski were our wingers and they're simply not creators.

          I read it, good post.

          Özil has monstrous assist stats by the way, and so did Kagawa at Dortmund. Still, food for thought. In the end I think I'll have to keep him for this game and if he blanks again he's out for Mata.

      Gervinho > Bale imo Trev. Lambert has a decent chance of points against our leaky defence this week, I'm expecting a nice score from Bale this week also.

      I had the same dilemma with my transfers invlving Bale, Lambert and Ba.
      In the end I held onto Lambert even tho I know his price will drop by Sat. I just think his fixtures are good and I'll get some points from him in the nxt 3-6 wks.
      I think Ba is way overperforming at the moment because Newcastle attacking play hasn't been that great. Bale on the other hand is a constant threat and Spurs look like they have more goals in them than Newcastle do.
      Thats why I went Bale.

    4 point hit for:

    Lambert--> Ba
    Barfa --> Walters / Lallana / Ramirez (SOT)

    Want to catch the Ba price rise and (c) for the West Brom game. Worth it?

    Currently...

    Foster // Begovic

    Baines // Saylor // Cuellar // Hughes // Demel

    Mata // Barfa // Michu // Pienarr // Sterling

    RVP // Augero // Lambert

          Could say the same of serie A, primera liga etc. Bottom line for me is that the PL has become more attacking but weaker at back and winning cup competitions requires a good defence. Even the group stages are only 6 games and acquire a cup mentality.

    The Cazorla debate gets me thinking about last season and the variables of this season's big hitters in midfield. Bale has been inconsistent and unpredictable, Cazorla has been "bitty", Silva poor vfm when fit, Hazard had a very fortunate DGW and Mata has suddenly exploded.

    Although Nani was unreliable there were happy times, VDV was my catalyst last season, Bale had a storming autumn/winter Dempsey and Siggy were a dream to own from January onwards. Silva was an enigma to me. Mata was best avoided.

    What are people's thoughts on Ben Arfa? His underlying stats have been underwhelming but he's been reasonably productive from a fantasy standpoint. I've had him since week 3 and the fixtures are just starting to perk up but I'm incredibly tempted to grab Mata and his white-hot form, fixtures be darned.

      hearing bad things about him stats wise, and there's no doubt he's less appealing in this more 4-4-2 like formation. i just look at some of those fixtures on the horizon and the full backs he'll be up against though and can't see him not scoring and assisting regardless, i also make him favourite to be on penalties

    Need to buy a 4.5m defender, should I double up on Stoke with Wilson (have bego) or get Hughes or get Cuellar? Any other option? Thx

      I like Wilson. You're bound to get a cleansheet from the both of them at least once in their fixtures. Considering doing this myself.

    Very tempted to do the following for -8 pt hit
    Cech -> Begovic
    Kagawa -> Santi
    Torres -> Ba
    Should any of them wait or does this look okay ?

      8pt hit only really worth it if you expect at least 8pts back from any 2 of the 3 players you're bringing in.

      Do you have Bale? I'd say yes to the above if you went for Bale rather than Santo. If you already have Bale then no, not worth it as you have a good captaincy option this week.

    People saying the Premier League is awful and a let down should really rephrase that as...

    "The defending in the Premier League fails to deal with the quality attacking play shown by the rest of Europe."

      This, plus premier league teams are careless in possession. I can't think of any other reason why Man Utd, for example, don't concede more when playing with Scholes and Carrick in the middle.

      PL teams simply give the ball away too easily.

          I have the armband on Tevez this week in expectancy of a major backlash after tonights performance.
          Only problem with Tevez is will he start nxt wk and the wk after? These CL games and Mancini's rotation are bound to hurt him soon but this week I think he's good

          I'm not too concerned about the w/e, but long term, I believe in putting as less value on the bench as possible, but I've had a template team, I need a punt I think, with flair, though I wanna keep my rank up, too much in the head tbh.

              Yeah, you're pretty much sorted, I like to keep it clean, I want all 15 of my players to play as much as possible. The only thing that puts me off Kolarov. I have no pressing issues this week, and that unsettles me somehow. I can't see a big score for myself, hence the flair. 😡
