Not so long ago, Demba Ba boasted the best goals-per-game ratio of any established player in Premier League history. A mainstay in even the most eccentric Fantasy squads, Ba seemed an undroppable force until the January 2012 arrival of compatriot Papiss Demba Cisse. Transplanted from his customary central role to accommodate the newcomer in Newcastle’s new look 4-3-3, Ba’s form and confidence deserted him as Cisse stole the show in the second half of the season. Cutting a peripheral and dejected figure, and with his agent pointedly hinting at a summer exit, it wasn’t clear what the new campaign would bring for Fantasy football’s fallen hero.

Whilst his eerily prompt epiphany at the start of this campaign might countenance the suspicion that the two Senegalese strikers are running a goalscoring timeshare scam, Alan Pardew’s reintroduction of Ba’s favoured 4-4-2 system affords a plausible enough alibi to keep the fraud squad at bay for the time being. With Cisse off-colour and increasingly out in the cold, Demba Ba has emerged once again as the talisman on Tyneside.

Involved in seven of Newcastle’s nine league goals, Ba has earned maximum bonus points in an astonishing four of his eight games and currently sits level with Robin Van Persie both in terms of Premier League goals and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, not too shabby for a player who costs over 5.0 less. Perhaps more impressive still: he has achieved these feats over a decidedly iffy run of fixtures, and with clear blue water now on the horizon, the sailing is looking plainer by the minute for Newcastle’s flagship performer.

A run featuring three home games in the next five (WBA liv WHM SWA sot) should furnish ample occasion for Pardew’s vanguard to rack up the points. Whilst parsimonious at home, West Brom remain destitute of an away clean sheet thus far; West Ham and Swansea are likewise struggling to maintain last season’s strong defensive records on the road, and given Nigel Adkins’ recent commitment to persevere with the Field Marshal Haig approach to a Premier League campaign, the Saints back line could be forgiven for shooting themselves in the foot rather than face Demba Ba come Gameweek 13.

Having ceded primacy to Cisse in the latter half of last season, Ba’s initial valuation was understandably, and happily, the more restrained of the two. Starting at 9.0 in the Sky Sports game and 7.5 in FPL he is already up to 8.3 in the latter game and rising, whilst Cisse is heading just as quickly in the other direction from an offer price of 9.5. Although a switch back to 4-3-3 could yield yet another reversal of fortunes for the Demba duo, Ba is unmistakably in the ascendancy as Newcastle’s fixtures ease.

He still maintained a solid assists total last season. I'm just saying there is an alternative to Walters who might be a more steady scorer...who's to tell right now.

Yeah he's an alternative, apart from the 2 things that go in favour of Walters that I mentioned earlier, I'm pretty sure Walters is more likely to get baps too. To be fair Adam + Ba is too expensive for my team anyway aha. Adam is 0.2 more than Walters.

Sensible to say that a draw is a minimum result for chelsea. Just trying to get some sentiment here on a draw outcome. Do we think the result will be

    A. Draw no goal
    B. Draw but more than 1 goal
    C. Draw 1 goal.

Does anyone else share my lack of confidence in Cazorla as a "big hitter"?. I have him, but just don't see him as a big hitter, don't feel confident enough to captain even home to QPR when I've Ba and RVP as options

You've got to pay attention to the details here.

Swansea have only played 3 away games. And in each of their last two they've failed to register a goal and lost comfortably 2-0 to Villa and Stoke. That is such a small sample to judge their away form.

Their first away game was a demolition of a poor QPR side. And their two losses away were to historically creatively lacking low-scoring teams.

Lots of talk about Arsenal's dodgy 4-2-3-1 system. Seems like the pass receivers are not converting chances into goals, and increasingly not even getting into goalscoring positions.

Someone suggested going 4-4-2 to add another goalscorer and give Giroud a strike partner. As well as give Cazorla someone to work with because he's isolated by himself at CAM. I didn't like the sound of this at first because one more striker means one less midfielder in the centre, so you risk losing control of the centre.

But I think if you tweak it we could have a very interesting and system indeed. 4-2-2-2 to be precise, which is what City used towards the end of last year when they won the title.

Fluidity will be the key. It would work like this:

    ............Giroud....Walcott
    ..Podolski----->....

It would work like this:

    ............Giroud....Walcott
    ..Podolski→.......←Cazorla
    ............Arteta...Wilshere
    Gibbs.................................Sagna
    ..............Verm......Kos

    1) Cazorla has been used wide by Spain before so it's not a big switch. He plays as an inside left, allowed to drift as central as he likes. Podolski plays in his usual left wing position but again is allowed to drift central. This allows us up to four midfielders in the centre and should allow us to continue to dominate the centre. In the same way, if they choose to play more advanced and closer to Giroud and Walcott, we could have up to four goal threats to overwhelm the defence.

    2) When Cazorla and Podolski go central, the fullbacks bomb on to provide the width. Something they are very good at. There is all kinds of potential for exciting fullback-winger combinations and so we can preserve this aspect of our game which is already quite strong.

    3) We now have two strikers, and Giroud finally has a strike partner. Walcott is an increasingly lethal finisher and gets his wish of playing CF. He has a long history of scoring from very advanced right wing positions anyway, so again it's not a big switch. There should be no shortage of through balls for both, with up to 4 central midfielders hopefully doing tiki-taka behind them.

    4) No more marking Cazorla out of games, no more marking Giroud out of games, the fluidity means that no one player can be marked without leaving someone else free.

Oh well. That's my two cents.

Who knows exactly what Arsene is thinking, but I would say he will be benched.

Giroud up front, Podolski left, possibly Walcott right or Ramsey if we're really unlucky again. I think Wenger has gone off playing Gervinho on the right, and increasingly in the centre.

I like the thought that has gone into this, Isacki. Could work at home, but you're effectively asking Walcott to see more of the ball than Cazorla in this formation - there's no getting away that the attacking 2 mids have to cover the wide channels when defending. As a result, I think Cazorla will see less of the ball in this formation.

All that needs to change is a return of Walcott on the right to stretch teams, imo.

Walcott on the right is the likeliest switch and might be enough. I HOPE IT IS ENOUGH.

I think Cazorla will be OK because his position is the same as Silva's was in the 4-2-2-2 (RAM, or to get a bit ridiculous, RCAM). And Silva was getting incredible amounts of the ball. It's a good point that some midfielder will have to put in a defensive shift wide. But a lot of top teams just don't. They count on their possession being good enough to not do much defending, a la Barca.

Worse comes to worse perhaps swap Podolski and Cazorla's positions as Podolski is quite good defensively I think. Whereas Walcott isn't.

Yep, I'm often amazed how teams don't score more goals against Barcelona given their narrow shape. Thing is, it dictates how the opposition defend, with the wide midfielders getting sucked inside to decrease the space in which Barca can work. There then isn't a wide player to take advantage of the space.

Can one of Giroud and Walcott drop off the front line and play in the position Rooney is doing with RVP? I know Podolski and Cazorla would be more narrow, but the formation still needs this at times... the alternative is Giroud and Walcott running wide into the channels leaving space for Podolski and Cazorla to attack the middle.

Wenger should certainly give it a try 🙂

Exactly, the way you attack reduces the opposition wide threat.

I thought about one of Giroud and Walcott dropping off and playing as support striker, unfortunately neither is really a creator. If any of them were that great at it, they'd be nailed on at CF in the 4-2-3-1 because as Dufflinks says the lone striker needs to be a creator too.

I think the latter, running in the channels while Podolski and Cazorla go central (more fluidity) is the best plan. Aguero and Tevez do that a lot for City when they play this system.

(Before someone says Walcott is a creator due to his assists record, he was very good at doing a well-defined task - run down the wing and bang in a cross... unfortunately positional nuances and usage of space are a bit lost on him...)

I'm no expert when it comes to Arsenal but, to me, the problem isn't the system but is, rather, that fact that Giroud appears to be a classic striker whereas what you need in that role is a number 10; a player who can hold the ball up and bring others in. I won't even bother pointing out the player that would have been perfect for that position as it's irrelevant but, otherwise, I think the players are more or less playing in their best positions.

Haha RVP. You're right of course, in the 4-2-3-1 Giroud needs to bring the wingers into play and he's not brilliant at holding play up. We did sign him as a goalscorer and it seems a bit unfair on him that we've played him in a system that doesn't suit him.

That said, we have no other striker that can hold the ball up. We will have to bite the bullet and play the system that best fits our current personnel.

so Fulham have a fit squad to chose from. This leaves 4 questions

    1) Will Kaca start? (There is Richardson, Frei and Dejagah to factor in)

    2) Will Baird keep his place or will Diarra slot back in

    3) Who will start from Petric and Rodallega (can't see anyway Berba won't start)

I have Berba and Hangeland who are both nailed on. Who plays around them could affect their points 😛

In all seriousness. I'm not overly bothered, just like to try and create a bit of debate every now and again.

I'd say Richardson has probably done enough to keep his place...maybe I'm wrong.
Baird...god knows...although Jol seems confident having him there.
Hughes won't be dropped and isn't he captain? Or am I mixing him up with someone?

Doesn't answer many questions but I interpreted that rodallega won't start, dejagah might. Diarra is our best cm so he should start. Sidwell could be dropped. Hughes definitely.

    Mannone davis
    rafael baines demel cuellar davies
    michu morrison cazorla barfa pienaar
    lambert rvp suarez
Have 2FT and 0.2in the bank. Thinking of doing the following:
    A: barfa + lambert + suarez >>> nasri + ba + defoe
    B: pienaar + barfa + lambert >>> nasri + maloney + jelavic..
C: barfa >>> nasri, retain 2FTs next week
    D: barfa + morrison + lambert >>> nasri + maloney + defoe

I am just hesitant to let suarez go since he has done well for me and is guaranteed gametime and either a assist/goal in every goal lpool score...

    Please comment

Nope. I've got 2FTs though so alternatively I can get Ba in for Berbs if I also downgrade kaca to a

    Which one's a better option??
    A) Guthrie > Lallana/Hoilett
    B) Davies > Richards/Kolarov
    C) Save the transfer.

    Thanks!

Expect West Brom to score maybe!
I'm mostly doing that next week!
But you maybe right with that. Davies > Simpson and McAuley > Sagna(next week).
Not having City coverage is a worry.

I'm scared this rich vein of form from Ba will come to an end abruptly with some tinkering from pardew but in the meantime I'm happily riding this bandwagon. I may even captain him as the sensible option. I would prefer to captain Santi though and for him to go mental at home agaisnt a poor QPR side.

Ba or Santi or Bale for capt?

that's the question that has been asked before and will be asked many times before 11.30am on Sat

Adam will be a top four MID scorer over the next eight GWS. No need to thank me yet, I’m just fastening the wheels onto the axle of the wagon prior to this week!

Guys lend me a hand please

    Howard/Fed

    Clyne/Demel/Ivan/Hang/Zab

    Santi/Mata/Nolan/Pienaar/Michu

    Tevez/Rvp/Lambert

    O.3 left two freebies

    Was thinking either

    A. Wilson and Bale > Ivan and Michu

    Or

    B. Wilson and Ba > Ivan and Lambert

Any other ideas? Still got wildcard
