Our final glance at Gameweek 9 sees us focus on City’s consistent Argentine, the flourishing attacking form offered by Fulham and whether “chasing points” is an act of folly or necessity…

The Player

Prior to last Saturday evening, he’d gone without a goal since Gameweek 3 and with Sergio Aguero’s recent return casting doubts over his ability to produce the points, Carlos Tevez had suffered a substantial drop in FPL ownership, with his price slipping from 9.9 to 9.4. City’s stuttering attack has hardly helped his cause either; the champions have notched just 18 times so far, 15 goals less than they had registered by the same point last year.

While Aguero failed to flatter in the 1-0 win over Swansea and Edin Dzeko warmed the bench in spite of his recent heroics, Tevez provided the vital spark in what was a dire display by the hosts – post-match, his manager acknowledged the player’s importance to the City cause:

“Carlos played very well against West Brom and again today. He worked very hard and I am very pleased for him. He scored a good goal at an important time and is a vital player for this team.”

Looking beyond the recent goal drought and it’s obvious that Tevez has offered a consistency that has been hard to mirror. He has produced attacking returns in seven of his eight starts this term and has racked up four goals and six assists thus far; with 64 points he is neck and neck with Robin Van Persie at the top of the FPL forward leaderboard.

Crucially for Fantasy managers, Tevez, like Van Persie, offers a preferred route to City’s attacking returns with Aguero’s claims hindered by a loftier price tag. While Aguero has the potential for more explosive returns, Tevez, judging by Mancini’s endorsement, clearly remains an integral part of the City set-up and his match-winner has caught more than just Mancini’s eye; already, he is the most transferred in forward this Gameweek ahead of a trip to former club West Ham, in what will be an emotional return to Upton Park for the Argentine. Given his displays so far, there’s every chance he could break the Hammers’ hearts as City go looking for their fifth straight win next Saturday.

The Team

The departure of Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele this summer had initially looked like serving a real blow to Fulham’s prospects but Martin Jol’s side have regrouped and continue to offer Fantasy managers reasons to be cheerful.

A share of the spoils in the six-goal thriller at Reading last Saturday took the Cottagers’ goal tally to 19 already – only Chelsea and United have found the net more often. Furthermore, Jol has finally addressed Fulham’s inability to score on the road – the Dutchman’s debut campaign produced a mere 12 away goals all season but already, they have notched nine in just five games, scoring two or more on four occasions.

Perhaps surprisingly, given their offensive menace, it’s Damien Duff and John Arne Riise who lead the way for FPL points at Fulham; with 42 and 40 respectively, there are clearly alternatives right throughout a side that looks simply full of goals right now.

Granted, Dimitar Berbatov looks nailed-on up top should be remain injury-free but, with Bryan Ruiz, Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric all offering alternatives, the Cottagers boss admitted he is still uncertain over his best front pairing.

“What is my best forward line? That is still my problem – and it’s already October. Ruiz is probably my most creative player but on the other hand Berbatov is a very good second striker. But it was good to see Ruiz coming on and changing our style, even though we looked fine first half. Ruiz and Berbatov never played together before. I feel that Berba is not a typical No.9 and that is why I’m playing Rodallega because he has pace and he stretches defences.”

Bearing in mind that aforementioned quartet have all scored between 25-31 FPL points so far, it leaves us with something of a quandary should it be confirmed that Berbatov has suffered a broken rib to make him a doubt for the weekend meet with Everton. Berbatov offers assured coverage of a Fulham side bristling with attacking threat but, for those without the Bulgarian and with their forward lines settled, a nod to Duff, with three goals and two assists so far, may well be a decent alternative given the apparent goal power of Jol’s outfit this term.

The Talking Point

Sometimes the line between chasing points and snapping up a player due to undeniably strong form can be a fine one. A couple of eye-catching displays can sway even the steeliest of Fantasy managers to acquire the services of certain individuals even when logic can, at times, suggest we hold firm. The continued form of Juan Mata is a classic example. Having been rested in the Gameweek 4 trip to QPR, the Spaniard was sitting with a 8.9 FPL price tag and with team mate Eden Hazard hoovering up the points, few would have predicted what was to come.

A stunning free-kick against United yesterday once again produced the points and means that Mata has now outscored the Belgian in four of the past five Gameweeks. Hazard’s returns have been more than respectable, though; he has accrued 28 points over the last five fixtures and has maintained his lead at the top of the FPL midfield standings but Mata has now produced 54 points over the equivalent fixtures, with four goals and five assists to Hazard’s goal and three assists. Many Hazard owners will argue that Mata simply cannot maintain such levels but while Hazard’s price has held steady at 10.3, Mata has now risen to 9.3 and with double figure returns in each of his last two away games, he’s likely to receive significant investment ahead of next Saturday’s deadline.

The same applies to another couple of likely protagonists, Demba Ba and Luis Suarez. Ba’s opener against West Brom means he has now played a part in eight of Newcastle’s 11 strikes, with seven goals and an assist, while Suarez has finally stepped up for Liverpool. The Uruguayan has had a hand in nine of Liverpool’s 12 goals, finding the net six times in addition to supplying three assists – can the duo continue to produce at the same rate?

Clearly, both are looking integral to their team’s chances but we only need to look to last season to see that the pair are more than capable of returning blanks aplenty. Non-owners have a quandary – do we cast aside our doubts and grab them while the going is good or ride out their current form and hope the returns will hit a decline, whilst scouring the market for lesser-owned alternatives?

While plenty of options are offered elsewhere, their respective displays are becoming more difficult to overlook as the Gameweeks go by and, in the case of Ba and Suarez, “chasing points” in hope of continued form, could be a fruitful tactic.

I see a bonus magnet, assists from a position almost as advanced as Caz, and the odd goal.

Wenger has been extremely patient with him and delayed his recovery so when he did return he was completely prepared. He decided to start him against QPR instead of being forced into it, and took him off at 66 minutes as part of Wilshere's return to fitness. It will continue to improve, fingers crossed, if he ever gets crocked I will cry.

I'd be very wary still. Players who have been out for that long tend to relapse within the first few weeks. Not always in a bad way, but a niggle here and there.

I can immediately think of 2 players from my club. Gary Neville was out for a similar amount of time and he never fully recovered his fitness and form (of course he was much older), and more recently Vidic.

Fletcher out looks a good shout although this week at home vs Villa he may produce. Can't you hold off till next week when you can decide between Caz and Bale? You will feel silly if Caz starts producing and Bale reverts to series of 2 pointers.

Actually Arsenal defence has been pretty decent this season. Of course if Santos plays at OT then it will just be mayhem with Valencia going berserk. I expect wenger to play Verm on left and go for Mert-Kos at CB.

So to answer your query no don't think RVP will go mental. United will win in a tight game me thinks.

Of course the obvious one is Caz Mata Bale Pienaar - I am tempted to say switch one of Caz or Pienaar for Nolan. Just a hunch. Fulham are strong on the flanks, Arsenal are having scoring problems and Caz isn't that involved in the goals.

True, I am tempted to play Nolan and bench Cazorla tbh. Nolan is good and strong at home normally and Man City can't defend well still.

Sorry to bug you but which 3 defenders + keeper would you play and why?

Tempted to play Bego and Ridgewell as West Brom cover as he can at least get an assist as I feel Foster will concede as Soton are good going forward.

It's a punt and there's always a chance of disappointment. But let's say you want 60 points a week. Wilshere would cost 6.4% of a budget of 100m. If you needed him to score the same percentage of your points, he'd need to score 3.84 ppg. That's very doable IMO. A clean sheet gets him to 3. An assist to 5/6 depending on whether a clean sheet has been obtained. An assist every three games and I think he will be punching his weight, and that's before BPs.

Yeah. And ideally I'd keep one of them in my team. I sold Michu against City because of fixtures and his upcoming yellow card with a plan to get him back in once it had died down a bit. Remains to be seen if that was a mistake in the medium term.

I'm just pointing out the bare minimum Wilshere will have to do, I fancy he will surprise.

I'm going on the basis of Wilshere being heavily involved in an Arsenal attack that fingers crossed will be one of the highest scoring in the league in the coming months. It's a very hard sell to make without watching a few videos of him in the QPR game. I'll take a look and see if I can find you guys some links.

He did play well, and he is a quality player.
Its interesting that you think he'll be involved far enough up the pitch to get attacking returns.
I suppose if he does that 'box to box' job like Toure has for the last few yrs then you'll be proved right.
He just hasn't struck me as a dangerous player any time I've watched him...

Yes agree if Wilshere is going to play the Diaby role he will be getting into the final third quite often. And his passing is good enough to pick off defences. But key issue is the forwards should start firing. Arsenal's problem is Giroud is yet to bed in and Podolski has gone off the boil. And no viable replacements for these two.

Trigger I think you're being very harsh on Cazorla there, his skill is superb, there is simply no chemistry between him and the pass receivers right now, and we know full well our problems in that department.

I still don't think in FPL terms Cazorla is anywhere near essential for midfielders. Lots of pass involvement but not often the last man or second last man to touch the ball.

Those antics were under Warnock, unwise to stereotype players, fittest and most committed that he has ever been, still very young. Bit like the RVP is injury prone stuff that still gets posted.

Oh come on, I'd be more than happy to have him if he was reliable and got the points, he doesn't.

I had him for the first few weeks, until he disppeared and I lost 0.2m waiting for this fit and committed player you speak of to appear. Never did.

I'm not making this stuff up. FPL wise he is way too risky. Better options around.

?? 13,4 it´s too much, 99% of the players can´t get him without using 2 transfers and the game against Arsenal isn´t that appealing (fixture wise).

It's not so much his recent track record as an underlying flaw in his physiology (or so I've been told). Finding insurance for him is extremely problematic and if you're paying a big fee (no way Newcastle would sell him on the cheap) you really don't want that risk.

I could be completely wrong of course.

Ditch Saylor - not unless you need his replacement to play immediately, I'm positive he'll replace Williamson soon. Could swap him for Collocini?
Change Keeper - Yes definitely - Begovic a good option.
Keep Caz - I think he's overpriced and want to take him out myself. Consider Michu and then Aguero->RVP

    Two quick qs?

1 - Foster or Begovic to play? Soton always seen to have a goal in them. I also have Holt vs Begovic if I play Begovic.

2 - Who to sell after next GW. Davies, Nelsen or Demel? Baines and Rafael are other defenders.

Foster - play the home guy. If you're upgrading your third defender then sell one that gets you most cash - I suspect that'll be Demel.

I have to replace S.Taylor but can't find any defender with CS potential....It's like I'm looking for only attacking potential even in a defender. Suggestions?

Looking for attacking potential it´s what makes sense this season...

My sugestion is go for a super cheap defender and biff upfront or get the likes of Sagna,Evans Rangel or Gallas

Have gone for the free transfer.

    What are everyone’s thoughts on

    Foster-Begovic

    Olsson-Caulker-Baines-Baird-cuellar

    Mcanuff-Walters-Mata-Pienar-BenArfa

    Rooney-Tevez-Jelavic

    Am twitching about no RVP

Good team mate, solid everywhere and 4 good subs as well.

Not having RVP is begining to worry me as well

I think you're over reliant on Everton tho, I'd have Pienaar or Jelavic out.

    Guys..Bad GW (Yet another).

I don't have RVP and i am thinking to sell Aguero>RVP and Gerv> Taarabt for -4 (former transfer cnanot be done without the latter). So..worth the -4 hit?

I'd say its worth doing. RVP is essential, and Taarabt ahead of the Reading match could certaintly pay for itself...
