Alan Pardew has doubts over Demba Ba’s availability for next Sunday’s trip to Liverpool. Micah Richards looks set to be sidelined for up to eight weeks with a knee injury for City, though Pablo Zabaleta could return for the trip to West Ham. Arsene Wenger has concerns over Gervinho’s ankle problem, Brian McDermott refutes reports of a bust-up with Danny Guthrie, while a quartet of injured West Brom players hit the comeback trail ahead of Southampton’s visit next Monday evening:

Alan Pardew revealed Demba Ba is to undergo a scan on the shin problem that forced the forward off after 71 minutes of Sunday’s 2-1 win over West Brom:

“Demba appears to have a bit of a nerve problem. It is not a major concern and I don’t think it is an ongoing problem, but the major question is whether he can make next week.”

Question marks remain over Ba’s availability for next Sunday’s trip to Liverpool, then – a potentially bitter blow for his 32.2% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners. The 8.4 priced FPL forward has racked up 60 points already, only four less than Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez at the top of the forward rankings, with his opener against the Baggies taking his tally to seven goals and an assist in the opening nine Gameweeks.

Ba has also picked up 14 bonus points in FPL, more than any other player but if he fails to make it, Pardew will be hoping luck continues to favour Papiss Cisse, after the January signing account his account for the season at the weekend in a somewhat fortuitous manner. The Magpies boss also talked up the prospects of Sammy Ameobi, after the latter climbed off the bench to provide the assist for Cisse’s last-gasp winner; with Hatem Ben Arfa providing just one assist in his last six, Pardew clearly needs more creativity right now:

“Sammy looks to provide a little bit of a spark for us. I was searching for some sort of lift for the team and I thought he was very positive for us. We changed the system a couple of times and he tried to create for us.”

Reports indicate Micah Richards is set to be sidelined for six to eight weeks for City after tearing cartilage in his knee during Saturday’s home win over Swansea. The Mail suggests the right-back has already undergone keyhole surgery to alleviate the problem and while the news is perhaps better than initially anticipated, it adds to Roberto Mancini’s defensive woes right now. Mancini was without Maicon and Pablo Zabaleta for the weekend and Richards’ loss further diminishes his options at right-back, though Zabaleta could perhaps be ready to return this weekend at West Ham from a hamstring problem – if he fails to make it, Kolo Toure looks odds-on to step in, should City continue with a back-four at Upton Park.

Elsewhere in the City squad, The Mail go on to say that David Silva has returned to England after a week’s rehabilitation in Spain on his injured hamstring; while the playmaker’s recovery is progressing, he is not expected to be ready in time for the Hammers game, though City have yet to officially confirm this.

Arsene Wenger rolled out an injury update ahead of Arsenal’s Capital One Cup game with Reading this evening. The Gunners boss revealed that Gervinho has an ankle problem but is unsure just how long the Ivorian could be out for – the player had a scan yesterday with Wenger expecting results soon. Wojciech Szczesny is close to a comeback, according to his manager, after returning to training – but he will not features against the Royals, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also out tonight with an ongoing hip issue.

Wenger also spoke of his decision to drop Carl Jenkinson for the first time this season after Bacary Sagna recovered from a broken leg for the visit of QPR:

“It was a tough decision, very tough. The team was a bit low in confidence and I felt experience at the back could help. Of course Bacary Sagna has an advantage on Jenkinson in experience. But I am very, very happy and thrilled with what Jenkinson has done until now and he will play again this season of course. It was a difficult decision, but I would like to give credit to Carl. What he has done is extremely promising and he is so young, so where he is now at his age now is fantastic. Two years ago he was playing in League One, and where he is now is fantastic.”

Sagna’s return helped Arsenal to their first clean sheet in six matches after a poor run of defensive showings. Jenkinson had started the season solidly, with a clean sheet in each of his first three games, but as the backline started to look a little dodgy, Wenger is clearly turning to the more experience heads to get his side’s campaign back on track. With a trip to Old Trafford and a north London derby with Spurs in the next three, Sagna looks in the driving seat to maintain his starting berth; handing Jenkinson’s 21% FPL owners a real dilemma, with his game time looking anything but assured now the Frenchman is fit and available.

Brian McDermott has denied reports of a falling out with Danny Guthrie after the former Newcastle man was left out of the Reading squad for last week’s home game with Fulham.

“There was no bust-up. He wasn’t selected and trained yesterday. The players that are not in the side support the players that are in the side. I try to have a conversation with the players not playing and I did that… He wasn’t selected, but he’s fit. He’s part of the squad of 20-odd players and has got to get himself into the 18. I just felt it was the right thing to do.”

Guthrie had started the Royals’ first four in “the hole” before being dropped for a couple of games with McDermott moving to 4-4-2 but returned to action in the Gameweek 8 trip to Liverpool with the visitors returning to a more defensive shape. An injury to Jem Karacan looked set to afford Guthrie another run in the first XI but his manager’s decision to omit the midfielder from his squad completely was a huge surprise. Guthrie was a popular cut-price option at the start of the season but has now dropped to 4.3 in FPL – the sales look set to continue, with his failure to convince McDermott a clear worry for his 4.3% owners.

Chris Brunt, Jerome Thomas, Billy Jones and Boaz Myhill all continued their comebacks from injury by turning out for West Brom’s U21 game against Reading yesterday afternoon. While Thomas and Myhill have yet to feature for the Baggies this term, Brunt limped out of the Gameweek 6 derby with Aston Villa due to a hamstring injury, while Jones stepped in for regular right-back Steven Reid in Gameweek 3. He, too, picked up an injury in the Villa match and has been sidelined since then – with Reid still unavailable, Jones may be set to challenge Gabriel Tamas for the role against Southampton next Monday if he can prove his fitness.

OK guys, I would appreciate a few opinions with this...

I need to decide tonight before the prices rises in the morning... I want to get Mata in now for next week but the only way I can do it for free is to swap with Cazorla, which is what I will probably end up doing...

However, I have been playing around on my transfers page and pondering using my WC to achieve the team below, and I have to say I think losing Baines & Rafael would be alleviated by having an almost perfect front 7 with probably the best coverage from each of the top teams...

The budget backline rotate very well until the Jan WC and I always have 2 playing at home... what do you think, is it worth it, to keep faith with Cazorla? Thanks.

Yeah that's what I'll probably end up doing, but I also want to get rid of Lambert and fix my defence issues in the process, all while bringing Tevez back in, since I made a mistake getting rid of him...

That defence is far too weak. Time and time again this season we have seen big points come from the back, you would be foolish in my opinion to not have at least one attacking defender (baines/rafael/riise). Front 8 look great mind 🙂

Yes but these teams will quietly bring a few CS home, all while that front at least 2/3 of my front 7 will be hitting form in any given week to alleviate the reduced returns in defence...

There is no doubt it is a risky plan... but it could pay off... it just means I will lose out on the odd goal/assist from Baines/Rafa...

In fairness the front 8 is the same as mine apart from tevez to berbatov. I couldn't deal with the worry of mancini's rotation and subsequently could never see myself confidently captaining tevez and I think Berbs will provide a consistent point stream. Would allow you to get Baines . . .

The other thing is that the mentioned defenders attacking stats are so good that it is never just an assist or goal it is often 2/3 bonus points as well.

    Team is:

    Foster / Begovic

    Baines / Rafael / Jenkinson / Demel / Davies

    Hazard / Cazorla / Michu / Pienaar / Sterling

    RVP / Tevez / Lambert

    2 FT, £0.2m in bank

Thinking this week (first transfers in 4 weeks as have tried to be patient):

Cazorla > Bale (perhaps only for the week but with price rises/falls should balance out)
    Jenkinson > Caulker / Cameron / Baird

Lambert and Davies both look weak links but coming fixtures (Lambert) and low value/bench fodder are leading me to stick for now.

Does anyone have any advice/other suggestions? Thanks a lot.

I'd like to see the following line-up for Arsenal vs Reading:

    Shea
    Jenkinson Squillaci Miquel Meade
    Yennaris Frimpong Coquelin
    Gnabry Giroud Arshavin

    Martinez Koscielny Eisfeld Chamakh

Apart from Giroud, who needs to find some form and goals, the others are all potential replacements for first team players - either in the event of an injury crisis or as future stars of the team.

Yeah, I don't think that would kill him. And it's a bit of a concern that even for a second string game our only true alternative is Chamakh. Chamakh should get some minutes, but I wouldn't have the confidence to start him.

It could also be an opportunity for Theo to play up front, but again I wouldn't start him as he's coming back from a knock.

Well, I think Gervinho can do a job up front, especially if we're going down the route of Barca / Spain / Chelsea of 4-6-0, false 9, striker drops deep and sets up play for attacking, tiki-taka midfielders...

But, I don't think that's really where we're going, and even if we were, Gervinho is not ideal.

We need a striker to score goals. Like Ba or Fletcher or Berbatov, and from what I've seen I believe Giroud has the potential to be that player - play some games, find your groove and fill your boots.

Agreed on all points. Giroud very unlucky, runs are great, talent undoubted, just needs the through balls and better service from the flanks which is where we're short atm. We need scorers and giroud, podolski and walcott all are. If used properly.

Yes, that's exactly what you should do this week.

Sadly for me, I am completely dependent on price rise/fall this week, as after my planned moves I will have 0.0 left in the bank. So will have to my moves today/tomorrow.

    1) kacan to 5.1 mf gera/mcanuff/sterling?

    2) wilson to cameron?

    3) wilson to colocinni?

im kind of thinking 1) as i have 3 defenders starting and would rather an attacker coming in rather than a defender if one of the front 2 are out..opinions appreciated

    [Lost on prev page]

Hi guys. Help a man out.

    My team is:

    Foster (Cerny)
    Baines Jenkinson Clyne (Williams Wilson)
    Pienaar Cazorla Hazard Morrison (Noble)
    Ba Tevez Suarez

Immediate problems are Jenks and Wilson.
Got 2 FT and 3.5 in bank.

Thinking of Jenks > Cameron and Suarez > RVP for -4. Worth it?

Then I leave Wilson a week since I got him at 4.5. Thoughts?

And is RVP worth it over Suarez+Transfer / Rooney+$$$ ?

    Thanks.

do the jenks transfer now and get cameron in.... wait a bit about the BA news, if BA is injured for a few weeks you will have to deal with that first.

if i had saurez i wouldnt be transfering him out right now.

with your team, If ba is out for a while, i would do Ba -> roon or rvp depending on what you can afford

      Who are your other mids?
If you can play your other 4 mids every week, then B.

Although Rooney is in good form, I still think RVP leading the line is more nailed on and will get you more points at the end of the season with his consistency. He is also the most reliable captain choice out there.

How much more value you think I will lose on Guthrie until January wc? 0.3 more to 4.0 or maybe even 3.9?

I'm not sure which is the way to go

    a) change for sterling now and not lose, but gain some value for january
    b) keep him as a non playing benchman and use cash somewhere else

Keeping him leaves door open for a straight swap for baines, pienaar => rafael, santi gw14(!), but
then again good bench propably comes in handy in november-december.

Remember the stat about no one in the top 20 having RVP? This is going to get sooooo interesting now if RVP does actually explode. They'll have a huge RVP train breathing down their necks and no clear way to jump on it.

Isacki I posted this on the previous page for you. As you say what more do you want from rvp in pts per game and he still has you guys way down the rankings, I don't think the top guys are losing any sleep lol.

Isacki I like the logic and the analysis, its good to see people trying to justify their actions with some stats. The only problem is that the average of the guys (on this post) who say RVP is a season keeper is 92k, and my bro’s team and mine who don’t have RVP are sitting inside 1k and around 3k.

I don’t think a collection of people ranked so low should be even admitting they are fool enough to hold on to RVP since the the gutting influence squeezing him into their teams is the reason their ranks are so dire but they are too fool to see it?

Fair enough, interesting point that you reckon you can do more with the money saved than RVP gets you. So far as you say, for whatever reason it seems you can. There have been some early GWs when alternatives like Tevez, Jelavic, Ba etc did as well or better. But if you look at RVP scores with the exception of the monster Southampton game which was well Southampton, they have been steadily rising from 1pt bench appearances to double digits. I think the momentum is changing as he establishes himself in this new look united team. He's gone from below value to over value.

Also rarely bother talking about rank since you got to look forward, but I'm not too hung up on rank so early in the season. In terms of points it's maybe a GW behind, quite a lot but not something conclusive with 1/4 of the season gone.

I agree with you re rank Isacki (I hate bringing it into discussions this early in the season tbh) and I don't think he is a bad option just that I don't think he is "essential" by a long way. I might even bring him in for his nice run of fixt between gw 11 to gw 20 or so and then drop again to get a more balanced team. The thing is with RVP is you have to capt him every gw to get value from him imo and most who do have him have not been doing that.

Yeah I got RVP to solve my captaincy problem and he kind of has. In fact the week I go for bale because RVP is playing Chelsea he still outscores bale by two!!

I hate the word essential. Time will tell if it becomes appropriate for RVP as it was last year. I'd say he's at the top of the watchlist though.

The averages are distorted because your samples do not adequately represent the population. Many higher ranked players have RVP in their teams and many lower ranked ones do not.

What do you think of this heavy heavy hypothetical team?
    Bego/4.0
    Santon/Cameron/Gorks/Nelson/Demel
    Mata/Cazorla/Bale/Pienaar/Sterling
    RVP/Aguero/Ba

Can downgrade Pienaar and upgrade Santon to Rafa/Jevans.
I can downgrade Aguero also and maybe get Sagna but i'm on the Aguero train already.

Thing is that with such a thin defence it makes a world of difference to have one defender to play every week instead of zero. Rafael could be that one with his attacking potential, cheap price and lovely fixtures

Why would ANYBODY sell Baines? He scored an own goal, conceded twice, and still ended up with 4 points.

As long as he continues to assist, he's staying put. Find another way of getting Rafael/MUN defender if you must

Just out of curiosity, how many hits have people taken so far (if any). I've found myself taking two -4 hits and another this week that was down to injury pure and simple. In hindsight I shouldn't have to change the team til around January by then I can use the WC
