City’s unbeaten run stretches to 10 games but their toils in front of goal continue, with a goalless draw at Upton Park. Sergio Aguero is handed a sub role yet again, while Andy Carroll draws yet another blank for the hosts:

On the Up

City Defence
This evening’s goalless draw maintained the champions’ recent upturn in defensive resilience. It’s three clean sheets and just one goal conceded in the last four Gameweeks now for Roberto Mancini’s men – the likes of Chelsea and United have one clean sheet apiece in the last six, by comparison.

West Ham Defence
A first clean sheet in six was just rewards for the home side’s resilient efforts. Sam Allardyce will be buoyed by his team’s ability to nullify City’s threat but with Guy Demel still sidelined and James Tomkins missing out through injury, the Hammers boss will be hoping James Collins can shake off a knock which forced him off towards the end, given their upcoming schedule.

Going Down

Sergio Aguero
With a vital Champions League game against Ajax in midweek, Aguero was benched yet again for this evening’s trip to Upton Park. Roberto Mancini started with three of his four forwards and while the Argentine was afforded some game time late on, he has now been omitted from the City first XI in three of the past four Gameweeks – despite his obvious capabilities, Aguero has simply become far too frustrating a Fantasy option right now, with his manager’s up front rotation dramatically curtailing his appeal.

Andy Carroll
His loan move to West Ham, which saw the towering centre-forward reunited with Sam Allardyce, was hailed as the perfect fit. The Hammers’ tactics seemed tailor-made for Carroll, with delivery from wide guaranteed to create chances aplenty in the air but it hasn’t quite transpired as Allardyce would have hoped. Another blank today means Carroll has just one assist in six appearances since making his way to Upton Park.

Fellaini - home game V crappy Sunderland team.

Mata - home game against crappyish Liverpool team

Tough call I guess. Fellaini is more urgent though due to rise. Mata will stop rising for the moment.

That's misleading. He went up last night, meaning his NTI drops to 0 which shows -28,000-odd NTI, so he still shows negative NTI. He is in fact still rising.

Ah, the urge to downgrade bale is great.

If I do Bale > Michu

Then I have the funds to do ...

    Davies > Rafael

Michu and Rafa are about 15 points better off than Bale plus any sub 4.5 defender to date.

Plus bits left over to do crouch > berb and pie > fellaini when I get the chance.

I'm leaning towards it. Got a bad feeling about the honeymoon being over at Spurs.

    For discussion:

Is this game really all about luck?

I see a lot of posts claiming this game comes down to luck. I think not. I think we would hardly do all the things we do if we really believed that. What happens any given weekend is luck, but in the long run we show skill (or not) by positioning ourselves to benefit from good luck and not be hurt by bad luck.

    Thoughts?

I agree with the poker analogy, but that means it is not really about luck. Between two equal players it is luck, but a good poker player can fleece a bad one no matter what the cards. Luck is the raw material we work with; the skill is in using information and analysis to identify where the luck is most likely to strike and making sure we have the team to take advantage of it. FFSers do better than casuals (usually) for a reason, and some people regularly finish in the top 10,000/1,000/100 for a reason.

Luck and gut feeling if ya askme.

E.g. Look at my GW1 score - think I meant for that to happen? Even look at my benched points.

      http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/853/event-history/1/

I look at things in terms of both fixtures and form. I.e I just brought in Ramirez from Southampton - attacking team, bound to get goals, with Ramirez as a talented differential with good fixtures.

Absolutely. Again, what happens this GW is probably luck. But some people manage to garner more luck than others. Bowstring above says luck and gut, but then proceeds to set out a considered approach. This approach is about maximising the possiblity that good luck benefits you and minimising the potential for bad luck to harm you. So the game is not about luck. The fodder is luck, but the game is skill.

In the end of the season, a guy who finishes 100kish can't say he lost to a guy inside 10k because he (or she) had back luck over the course of the season. So yes, I agree that in short-term luck plays sometimes a big role in gameweek scores, but in the long run genuinely better players end up outscoring the more casual ones.

Going back to the last article "Piennar is a superb playmaker who will deliver value", not sure i agree with that. Shaun Maloney offers value, at 6.9 i expect more then i am getting from Pienaar. Soo many goalscoring mids or cheaper alternatives around that price that i am thinking of getting rid despite his fixtures.

Maloney could be better value actually, but I suppose with Pienaar you're buying into a more consistent team. If I had Maloney I'd probably bench him more (for better or for worse!)

No idea why he wasn't played on the left today. He had developed a good thing with Baines and Jelavic..

But just looking at the MOtD highlights, it's kinda hard to ignore Fellaini, standing in the box with all those chances. I barely saw Pienaar at all.

I brought in Mata knowing he wouldn't play much. It's a long term move and I'm happy I did it then otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford him due to rise.

This is what I'm hoping for. Plays 59 mins, looks sharp, creates chances, subbed off due to lack of match fitness 1 fpl point, ignored by all.
