Our Friday evening regular is rolled out once again, as we highlight another trio of overlooked Fantasy alternatives for your perusal ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline. This time round, we offer a route into the two most lethal attacks around right now and also consider a fit-again full-back with a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon…

Javier Hernandez

Climbing off the bench at Villa last Saturday evening, the Mexican’s deadly eye for goal broke the hosts’ hearts and helped United to yet another three points in their bid to reclaim the title. Such was Hernandez’s impact, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed post-match that the forward’s performance had earned him the right to start against Norwich this weekend – a claim once again reiterated by the United boss this morning.

Looking at the statistics, Hernandez been more than a little unlucky to have earned minimal game time. A single start so far this season harvested a nine point Fantasy Premier League (FPL) return in Gameweek 4, with a goal, assist and couple of bonus points against Wigan. Hernandez has played just 205 minutes in the league and has racked up four goals – Wayne Rooney has scored twice in 567 minutes by comparison.

Ferguson’s words of assurance have seen Hernandez acquired by significant numbers heading into tomorrow’s deadline – 51,000 FPL managers have snapped up the 7.6 priced forward thus far, yet Hernandez remains a real differential, with an ownership just slightly in excess of 3%. Similarly in the Sky Sports game, he comes in at 7.8 and is currently in just 1% of managers’ plans. With Rooney still a doubt due to the ankle problem that forced him off in last weekend’s 3-2 win, Hernandez looks set to partner Van Persie for the trip to Carrow Road and with United’s flourishing attack scoring three times in all but one of their last five road trips, goals look on the menu once again tomorrow evening.

Bryan Ruiz

It was a difficult first season for the Costa Rican. Ruiz arrived from Dutch outfit FC Twente with an impressive goalscoring tally (35 in 65 games) but the rigours of the Premier League proved initially problematic and matches all too often seemed to pass him by. Managing the full 90 minutes just nine times in 27 appearances, his Fantasy impact was minimal, with a couple of goals and four assists indicative of his early struggles.

This time round, it’s a different matter. Having finally grown accustomed to the greater demands of the English top-flight, Ruiz has turned in a series of strong performances as Jol’s side rack up the goals. Already, he has seven assists and has found the net once in eight appearances and with Dimitar Berbatov adding further class through the middle, the Costa Rican has racked up 42 FPL points – over five points per game.

Granted, the Bulgarian’s superior scoring rate and mid-price appeal is difficult to ignore but for those Fantasy managers intent on a cut-price route into the second most prolific attack in the league so far, Ruiz is an intriguing option. While a home clash against Sunderland tomorrow holds undoubted appeal, Fulham have shown an ability to find the net regardless of opponent – Jol’s men have notched twice against United and Everton and put three past Arsenal last time out. Priced at 5.8 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, an ownership of 2% and 0.2% respectively highlights the extent as to which Ruiz has been ignored.

Jose Enrique

Brendan Rodgers’ arrival on Merseyside had initially seemed the perfect fit for the former Newcastle man. The new manager’s preferred 4-3-3 system, with full-backs pushing on and offering threat from deep seemed tailor-made for Enrique’s attacking tendencies but injuries, combined with an initial lack of defensive solidity, saw the Spaniard drift off Fantasy radars.

Having fully recovered in recent weeks, Enrique is finally beginning to nail down a regular role for Liverpool, with a brief shift to 3-5-2 even affording him a chance on the left of midfield against Chelsea last weekend. Unbeaten in their last six, the vast majority of attention has understandably been heaped on the shoulders of Luis Suarez but, particularly at home, the Reds backline is also starting to produce. Rodgers’ men have shipped a single goal in their previous three at Anfield and this weekend welcome a Wigan side with just two goals in their last four road trips.

Priced at 5.7 in FPL and 6.9 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 3% and 2% respectively, Enrique could once again come into contention as a viable Fantasy prospect, with a strong upcoming schedule offering clear potential over the Gameweeks ahead.

MJ (numbers) (Atalanta): you made a point on the last page about people transferring out established players. I get your point, but what is the principle you are defending? Is it that no players who have scored well up to now should ever be moved? You can’t sustain that principle. Unless you are prepared to substantiate the factual claim that, say, Cazorla will always score well for infinity, you cannot be saying that Cazorla should never be transferred out. When is it OK in your view to do this? What does it take? You should not scoff at those who have decided that now is the time unless you have some principle on the basis of which you can claim either that there is no good time or that this is not that time.

      MJ6987 (ATALANTA) SAYS:

I remember people saying Bale was a season keeper not long ago, so what has changed? It’s not as if he’s new to the PL so you know what you are getting with him. Surely, you should be taking out your weakest link first and its hard to believe that any of these players are in this category.

My other point is that every transfer effectively has a points cost associated with it unless you have 2 FTs and no other priorities.

Plus, both Bale and Cazorla have pretty good fixtures coming up.

OK, that helps clarify, but it does not amount to a principle that forbids, say, getting out Caz or even Bale when he has delivered enough 2s to annoy. You say it is hard to believe that any of these players are the weakest link, but I ask again, what does it take to determine when they ARE that weakest link? They have high prices so they carry high expectations: I would wear a lot more 2s from a Nolan than a Caz. So the point is that getting rid of a Caz or a Bale is just a question of when you think that player will no longer score at the level that justifies their price. I think Bale is not there, but Caz is. Can you put forward an argument about that?

I think this is a really important point because basically if we were all to believe in the Bales of this world and stick with them for god knows how long. It may well see us fall behind others out of stubbornness. So assessing these things is a good idea because this is a game about points after all. And such choices are what success/failure is based on in this game. Standing by players indefinitely may well hurt you. Who is to know, after all!

EJ, it's a game of probability, there are no certainties just historical player performance data and opinions. Bale and Cazorla are better players than most of the alternatives in my opinion. Check the Scouts own stats for chances created, assists, PPI, involvement. In many ways the price is irrelevant, it's form and fixtures and the rest you leave to chance.

It's not my debate but I do have issues with folks who want to take out, for example. Santi > Mata *for a hit*. There has been a lot of this going on tonight. Whilst I've had my disagreements with MJ in the past, there are quite a few loons out there and they deserve to be treated as such.

      Hey ho... it's only a game 🙂

Only one disagreement that I can recall, but I was in a strange mood that time!

People can do what they want of course I just find some of the transfers strange especially ahead of a NL Derby that usually contains goals.

Each to their own I guess. Maybe I've got it all wrong.

I appreciate this. I appreciate your experience and it carries weight. I am only arguing against the blanket condemnation of any decision to replace an established, blue-chip player. There will always be a time when a "keeper" becomes a liability. Some will identify that time earlier than others. They might be right, they might be wrong. But if they are wrong, the argument should not be "it's stupid to take out enshrined players" but "you should not take out this player because he will . . . .".

I totally agree. I did highlight "for a hit" in what I said above.

We all make the best decisions that we can based on we think. It's personal... or it should be. I've dumped Santi for Fellaini and am thinking of Bale > Silva or a multitude of other options... it's what makes the game.

That said, there are some idiotic suggestions here on a friday night.

Pretty sure there is no wagon--more of a scooter. Most posts say don't do Caz to Silva or similar. I think Silva is a good shout. Looked good last week and his stats are great. He has something to prove yet, but at 9.3 a lot of people (including me) are thinking they might get ahead of the curve by bringing him in now. No groundswell but a few punters taking a chance. If we are right we will look like geniuses.

i dont get it either... there are so many options in midfield atm and an out of form silva in an out of form city team isnt going to set the world alight. silva was generally getting about 5/6 ppg last season when man city were on full cylinders. for 9.3 you get a player who you will never captain and will usually pick you up an assist and very rarely a goal.

all that being said i still own cazorla and hazard!

Not sure if this makes any difference with peoples thinking but according to the bookies Tevez is more likely to 'score 2 or more goals' and a hattrick

Tevez 12/5 for 2 or more

RVP 13 for 2 or more

    Tevez 15/2 for a hattrick

    RVP 17/2 for a hattrick

Doesn't surprise me with them playing Villa, it doesn't really make a difference though.

Whilst Tevez is more likely to score 1, 2, 3 or more, he's also more likely to do nothing. Whilst with RVP you get that consistency and potential for big returns at the same time.

I think Dzeko will score big this week if he starts. Hat-trick for Dzeko and Ba anyone?

Good night/morning fellow FPL junkies! Desperately in need of some advice as I look to bring RVP into this team:
    Jussi
    wilkinson Baines Ivano
    Sterling Mata Santi Michu
    Tevez Berbalove Ba

    Kacs Reid Cuellar Guzan

    3$ in the bank

Really want Berbatov, but surely Tevez/Ba are undroppable this week?

Got 2 FT, could do a boring keeper transfer, but that is so BORING.
    Thoughts? 0.8m in bank.

I will be so damn annoyed if Silva does well enough to form a huge following after the weekend. I'm one of the guys who thinks he's probably going to become a must have from here on out but my plan is only to get him in 2 weeks. I won't be able to stand it if he rises in price because all the doubters change their minds!

Aguero probably won't start, so you'll need him to do something off the bench. Still a possibility, but for that price you want a player to be starting.

You're banking on West Ham vs. Stoke to be 0-0 which it could well be, but I'd hedge your bets and switch your Stoke defender with Nelsen.
