Chelsea’s ineffectual display in Turin has them staring group stage elimination in the face and, earlier this morning, cost Roberto Di Matteo his job. Elsewhere, United’s decision to rest and rotate helps Galatasaray register a narrow win, while Theo Walcott is ruled out of Arsenal’s vital match with Montpellier this evening due to a shoulder injury…

Juventus 3 Chelsea 0
Last night’s main talking point was Roberto Di Matteo’s decision to drop Fernando Torres and field Eden Hazard as the lone forward for the Blues last night. In what proved to be his final game as Chelsea boss, Di Matteo’s faith in the Spaniard has clearly reached rock bottom – reports had suggested Daniel Sturridge was set to replace Torres up top but, despite Sturridge being unavailable through injury, Hazard got the nod ahead of the former Liverpool man. Torres was afforded a 20 minute sub appearance late in the second-half but failed to impress yet again. Di Matteo selected Cesar Azpilicueta on the right of midfield, though he was replaced by Victor Moses on the hour mark.

This morning’s main talking point is, of course, Di Matteo’s departure. Just four points off the top of the league, victory over City this weekend would close the gap to just one but, with two points accrued in their last four league games, form has not been on their side. The fallout now casts a huge cloud of uncertainty over Stamford Bridge going into Sunday’s showdown. Fantasy managers must now sit tight and wait for events to unfold in the next 48-hours before assessing how the changes, if they come, could affect the potential of Chelsea’s assets.

Chelsea Starting XI: Cech; Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill, Cole; Ramires, Mikel (Torres 71); Azpilicueta (Moses 60), Oscar, Mata; Hazard

Galatasaray 1 United 0
Having already qualified as Group H winners, Sir Alex Ferguson omitted many of his experienced stars for the trip to Turkey. Only three players – Rafael, Michael Carrick and Javier Hernandez – were retained from the side that lost to Norwich on Saturday. Carrick shifted to central defence and was joined by fit-again Phil Jones, as Ferguson chose to start with a midfield diamond once again, with Nick Powell tucked in behind Hernandez and Danny Welbeck. From a Fantasy perspective, last night’s game was more about who didn’t play – Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney will be afforded plenty rest ahead of a home clash against basement-dwellers QPR on Saturday, with the Dutchman set to handed the armband by huge numbers ; he has an incredible 66% of votes in this week’s Captain Poll so far.

United Starting XI: Lindegaard; Rafael, Carrick, Jones, Buttner; Anderson (Young 74), Fletcher, Cleverley; Powell (Macheda 74); Hernandez, Welbeck (King 85)

In Other News
Arsene Wenger rolled out a handy injury update ahead of Arsenal’s home clash with Montpellier this evening. The Gunners boss revealed Kieran Gibbs and Gervinho will both return to the squad following recent thigh and ankle injuries respectively, though Andre Santos misses out due to an abdominal problem. Gibbs’ return should see Thomas Vermaelen return to a central berth once again – the Belgian has filled in at left-back in the last two after Santos’ much-maligned display at Old Trafford in Gameweek 10. The knock-on effect is that it’s likely to raise question marks over the starting roles of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, though the former looks the likeliest to drop out, bearing in mind Mertesacker has started all but one of the first 12 Gameweeks.

Wenger also dealt Theo Walcott’s Fantasy owners by ruling the winger out of tonight’s crucial encounter:

“It’s the injury he got during the (Spurs) game with his shoulder. We have to scan that today and see if there is no damage. He will be out for tomorrow but it should be short-term.”

With Gervinho available, the Ivorian is likely to be afforded a chance to impress on the right as Arsenal go in search of the three points. Walcott’ impact over the last two gameweeks has harvested a goal and three assists and with a strong run of fixtures on the horizon, he was seen as a cheaper midfield option to Santi Cazorla, though yesterday’s news will shelve any ideas of investing until Wenger gives us a more definite prognosis.

Alan Pardew has revealed Jonas Gutierrez could be set for a quick return to action this Thursday. The Argentine limped off early against West Ham in Gameweek 11 and was sidelined for the 2-1 home defeat by Swansea last weekend but his manager is confident he is closing in on a comeback:

“It was really touch and go with him (for Swansea). We had a tough week, and it was a tough call on Jonas. Jonas had an injury where we thought we could not risk losing him, especially after learning we’d lost Cabaye. We made that call. We think he’ll be OK for Thursday, and hopefully for Sunday at Southampton.”

With a single point in their last three, the Magpies now travel to Southampton in search of their first away win of the season. Pardew still has Fabricio Coloccini suspended and with Yohan Cabaye out for six weeks with a groin injury, the Newcastle boss doesn’t have his troubles to seek right now. Looking at the schedule, the weekend’s game may be the best chance of an away win over the next few Gameweeks – the Tyneside outfit’s next road trips takes them to Stoke, Fulham, United and Arsenal.

QPR have confirmed Bobby Zamora is set to be sidelined for three months due to a hip injury. The forward had been a regular under Mark Hughes and started very match between Gameweek 2-9 but after picking up the problem in training recently, managed a couple of brief sub appearances as the club afforded him time to recover. With Zamora out of the picture now, and the likes of Andy Johnson also sidelined, Djibril Cisse looks nailed-on as the lone forward for the foreseeable future – given that the Frenchman has notched just once all season, though, the omens don’t look too good as Hughes attempts to engineer a scramble up the table.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Hello, my name is Ron.

I am doing really bad at the FPL game. After 9 red arrows in a row, my worst performance ever, I took to the drink & seriously considered quitting. I came to this site for help, but people laughed at me & told me to do silly transfers.

I spent so much time trying to improve my rank, that I lost my job, my girlfriend...

I searched eveywhere for inspiration & I finally found this:

Since I'm about to run my third marathon this year (for charity but, y'know, I don't like to talk about that). I've watched a fair few of these videos and have concluded that the ultimate motivational video includes the following:

Al Pacino's 'Inches' speech in 'Any Given Sunday'.
The 'Our Deepest Fear' speech from 'Coach Carter'.
Rocky's 'Take the Hits' speech in 'Rocky Balboa'
Billy Bob Thorton's halftime speech in 'Friday Night Lights'.
Russel Crowe's 'What we do in life...' speech in 'Gladiator'.
Ali's 'I'll show you how great I am' speech from 'When We Were Kings'.
Kurt Russell's 'Great moments...' speech from 'Miracle'.

I have yet to see such a video that didn't include at least one of the above.

Well, maybe the question should be what score is your third choice trying to beat... I'd sit Shirokov if he needs to score 5 or more. Normally, I only replace players who have scored 3 or less. Four is the borderline depending on the situation. Just my take.

@Roscola, read your piece on Arsenal's defence. Interesting stuff. I really think Vermaelen is Arsenal's weakest defender at times. He always makes mistakes and I bought him last year for a while and so monitored his general play. One match in particular against QPR...he was truly woeful. I mean I've never seen a defender have such a poor game. He cost them that game too.

As long as he's captain they can't do anything about it either. He will always get away with being fairly average and defensively lacking because he is the 'VERMINATOR'

It's easy to like him because he can look good on his day. And when he storms forward to score a goal it's easy to warm to him. But I constantly see error after error from him whenever I watch Arsenal and it baffles me that it's not touched upon more often.

The Man Utd game was another example of his slack decision making.

Yeah, he doesn't quite live up to his billing, does he?

I owned him briefly towards the end of last year when I was swimming in cash and had nowhere but defence to spend it. I can't complain because he scored once or twice but I remember watching games and thinking "this guy? really?"

Yeah, I was the same. He was a luxury buy near the end and he scored against Everton/Newcastle I think. Which was great but when I watched the QPR game...I was astounded at his incompetence. He looked all over the place.

It pays to watch some players play a bit before buying! Although I guess I don't regret the goals he scored, which was the real reason I bought him in the first place 😀

Watching players can go both ways though - Yaya looks IMMENSE on the pitch and I'd get him straight in my team just from watching him. But he just doesn't score many fantasy points. I guess a combination approach is best.

Ok not a Chelsea fan, in fact I don't even support an English club (aside from my FPL team). But need to get this off my chest.... who do Chelsea think they are? Di Matteo did an unbelievable job there last season, FA Cup & somehow a maiden CL triumph. A bad run of form this year has led to his sacking... in the middle of December!! They are still within spitting distance of the top of the PL and have 2 domestic trophies to play for.

Understand the CL is the Holy Grail for Abramovich, but let's be honest, they were never going to win it again. Shakhtar & Juve are 2 good sides and it's not as if anything the new manager does will get them back into the CL is it?

Abramovich is throwing £millions away on a regular basis on managers, it's sickening.

The players are not blameless in this either... I'm sure they have been involved somehow in RDMs departure. If Roman gets his wish and appoints Pep, let me assure those players now that if they thought AVB was strict, they ain't seen nothnig yet. Everything Pep does is meticulous, from training methods, timing, eating arrangements. The players at Barca had this ingrained in them and thrived under it. Can you imagine little Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard, along with the other ego's being pushed out of their fancy lifestyle routines?

    Absolutely disgusted by this.

DH..... Well said, I really like DiMatteo and thought the players did as well. I don't see how all his accomplishments such as winning the CL last year were some lucky streak. Makes little sense to me what this owner does with his "toys".

ideas above their station mate. At what point have Chelsea ever been a club that "demand success" from every avenue? The owner has given the fans some days they'll never forget, but he's p***ed around with their club so much. To use a phrase coined up here about another team who play in blue, they are an constant embarrassment & occasional disgrace.

The criteria for Man City and Chelsea managers seems to be win every game. If you lose more than 2 in a row you're fired.

RDM not only brought Chelsea their first Champions League title but was also a fantastic servant to the club as a player. This lack of respect, faith and trust in RDM is the epitome of the greed and corruption currently going on in today's game.

Completely agree. But Roman plays his like his fantasy game, and I imagine he was left with no option but to appoint RDM when he won the CL.

I dont think he ever liked him much, was too low profile for fancy Romans liking. But yes, complete disgrace.

But isnt RDM the winner here? Must've got a massive payout, will get a decent offer I am sure, and from Asst Manager last season, will enjoy a low pressure job managing a decent club without idiotic owners.

So i have a real confusion with my team....
        begovic (mannone)
        baines rafael cueller (demel davies)
        michu sterling cazorla nasri (fellaini)
        rvp ba berba...
        0.7m in the bank, 1FT

The confusion is what should i do with nasri??
A: take nasri out this week but will only have 8.7m to spend so cant afford a big hitter in mid i.e. bale/silva/mata....the one option is walcott but dont wanna have walcott and cazorla
B: downgrade nasri to upto 7m i.e. walters/lennon/nolan/AJ and with remaining cash upgrade ba to tevez/suarez....the prob with this is i would have to take a hit for this...
C: ideally want to upgrade nasri to a bighitter but dont know where to find some cash from (dropping baines is not an option).

        Thoughts....
