Twelve Gameweeks into the season and it’s something of an understatement to suggest Southampton have been far from impressive since their top-flight return. Nigel Adkins’ side have leaked goals in alarming numbers and sit second bottom of the table, with just nine points to their name thus far, but the past couple of matches have suggested they are finally starting to gel as a side:

Prior to last week’s home clash with Swansea, the Saints had conceded less than two goals on one occasion this term but have now managed that feat in back-to-back Gameweeks. Granted, a draw and a win in their last two is a little early for optimism but it is, nevertheless, the longest they have gone unbeaten in the league so far.

Cork v Davis

The upturn in performance has coincided with the return from injury of Jack Cork alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in the centre of midfield earlier this month. Sidelined with knee and ankle problems, the former Chelsea man had previously failed to feature in the top-flight this term, with his absence affording Steven Davis the chance to stake a claim as a regular.

After Saturday’s win at QPR, Adkins was unsparing in his praise of the midfielder’s performance as he watched his side battle their way to victory in the crucial bottom-of-the-table encounter with QPR:

“He (Cork) was yet again outstanding – him and Morgan Schneiderlin together. I played Jack Cork in every game after I signed him last season. He was called up for the Great Britain team for the Olympics which is a great honour obviously but we didn’t have him for pre-season. He came back and in his first game he got injured, he came back after that and got injured straightaway in his comeback game. We’ve not had an opportunity to have Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin together until now. They are two young 23-year-olds who I believe have got so much potential and we can get a good partnership going with them.”

Comparing the vital statistics of Cork and Davis in the centre of midfield, the former’s influence in front of the back-four is already obvious. In terms of involvement and distribution, he has averaged almost 20 touches per game more than Davis (80 to 60.6) and while the pair are virtually identical for passes received, Cork has been far more efficient in quickly moving the ball on, making 57 passes to Davis’ 46.3, with 48 to 39.8 successful passes per game.

TchsPasses RcvdPassesSucc PassesAerial DuelsTacklesIntRecoverClear

Steven Davis60.639.246.339.844.4%63.6%1.55.71.0

When it comes to defensive work, Cork has won 71.4% of aerial duels, far superior to Davis’ 44.4%, and has also bettered his successful tackle ratio, by 75% to 63.6%. He has made more interceptions (2 to 1.5), recoveries (9 to 5.7) and clearances (1.5 to 1.0) per game, highlighting his worth to the side. Clearly, Cork’s deep-lying role is not going to bring home the Fantasy points but it’s the extra combative edge he gives the midfield over Davis, in addition to his understanding with Schneiderlin, that has resultantly boosted the potential of the Saints’ attacking assets.

Southampton v QPR
Southampton v WBA

With the pair sitting in front of the back-four, Southampton’s 4-2-3-1 shape is clear in Saturday’s match (left). Cork (18) and Schneiderlin (4) are content to stay deep, with Jason Puncheon (42) and Adam Lallana (20) pushing high up on the right and left respectively in support of Rickie Lambert (7).

Their previous away game (right) at West Brom looks far less defined. Adkins rolled out a 4-4-2, with Davis (8) more advanced than Schneiderlin (4) in the middle and while Jay Rodriguez (9) was fielded on the right wing, his tendency to drop deep and into central areas offsets the side’s balance.

Puncheon Comparison

The winger’s goal and assist at QPR, supplemented by a couple of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, has already seen his priced rise from 4.4 to 4.5 this week, with plenty prepared to jump aboard the cut-price bandwagon. Granted, Mark Hughes’ side are bottom of the table for a reason and while we’re reining in our expectations, the average position maps over the last two games, compared to his previous appearances, shows just how far forward Jason Puncheon has been in possession.

Puncheon GW1-10
Puncheon GW11-12

The statistics more than back up his displays over the last two. Although Puncheon’s average game time between Gameweeks 1-10 and 11-12 was lower (73.1 minutes per appearances to 95), the figures take a significant jump. Over his last two matches, Puncheon has averaged 40.5 touches in the final third, virtually double his previous 20.7. For Passes received in this crucial area, he is again just shy of registering twice the tally (23.5 to 12), while the same applies to successful passes made in the final third, with 18 to 9.7 highlighting his upturn in distribution closer to goal.

Puncheon GW 1-1073.120.7129.731.9139.40.92.6

His more advanced position has helped him to five touches in the box per game – he had previously averaged three, while his attempts on goal have almost trebled, up from 1.9 to 5.5. Crucially, it’s not all speculative long-range efforts, either; 2.5 attempts have been in the box, up from a previous season average of one. This equates to 17.3 minutes per shot, superior to the Gameweek 1-10 figure of 39.4. Intriguingly, the number of chances created has almost halved, down from 0.9 to 0.5 –now that he is seeing more of the ball closer to goal, Puncheon is looking to find the net rather than tee up a team mate. An upturn in attempted dribbles, from 2.6 to four, highlights a player with flourishing self-belief right now.

Again, it’s no surprise to see the winger’s display was talked up by his manager post-match:

“He’s been working hard. He’s had a good pre-season and again it’s about that consistency…he’s scored a great goal and could have scored three or four more. He worked hard for the team as did everybody – it was a real good all round performance, but there’ll talk about Puncheon and maybe one or two others.”

A Look at Lallana

Finally, we take a glance at the displays of Adam Lallana over the past couple of games and compare them to a select batch of premium Fantasy midfielders. While Puncheon’s weekend returns have picked up plenty new investors, Lallana has failed to produce a goal or assist in his last four but his statistics have been superb – although they haven’t been translated to Fantasy points, his owners will be more than happy to hold.

Hazard10453527113
Silva957153793
Cazorla735045371
Valencia936353341

Between Gameweeks 11-12, only one midfielder, Eden Hazard, had more touches (104) in the final third than the Saints man, who managed to equal David Silva’s 95. While the City playmaker leads the way for passes received in the final third, with 71, Lallana’s total of 58 is bettered only by one other midfielder, United’s Antonio Valencia, with 63. For successful passes made in the final third, once again Lallana features in the top five; only the aforementioned trio of Valencia (53), Silva (53) and Hazard (52) have marginally made more.

In terms of chances created, Silva and Hazard, with seven apiece, have bettered Lallana’s five, though this is still superior to Santi Cazorla and Valencia, who both managed to provide three goalscoring opportunities for team mates. When it comes to touches in the box, though, Lallana excels – his total of 18 over the last two Gameweeks is joint-top with Hatem Ben Arfa and leaves the likes of Hazard (11) and Silva (nine) trailing in his wake. Interestingly, Gaston Ramirez also impresses here – his 13 is bettered only by Lallana and Ben Arfa.

For total shots over the last couple, Puncheon’s 11 tops the charts, though Lallana and Ramirez sit joint fifth, with five apiece; further illustration of the plentiful potential from Adkins’ attacking midfield trio. Lallana’s tally of three efforts from inside the box again fare well when compared to our other featured players, equalling both Hazard and Silva.

With three home matches in the next four Gameweeks (NEW, NOR, liv, REA) Adkins’ side could well be starting to find their stride at just the right time in their attempt to climb out the drop zone. As the stats suggest, there is plenty attacking potential on offer right now as Fantasy managers look to freshen up their five-man midfields and if Southampton continue along the same vein, there may be plenty reason for St Mary’s optimism just on the horizon.

Now that Citeh are out of CL how do you see Mancini setting things up up front with less need for rotation.

Kun and Tevez are by far his favourites if not best strikers, however Dzeko and Balo could be in with a shout particularly Dzeko

I personally believe it is better to have one big and one small striker, however I can't see Mancini not playing Kun and Tevez together..

Would love to hear others thoughts

Defo it will help Aguero production.

Really think Balo is out of favor. I can only see him come on as sub and start against weak opponents in FA cup.

As for Dzeko, i he could get the odd start for tevez, but i think he will continue to play more of the "Super Sub" role.

      aguero
      tevez
      dzeko
      mario

That's the order with aguero getting the most minutes..

can see tevez playing just behind aguero most games, dzeko taking the super sub role, and occasional start when they're playing more physical teams.. think baloteli may leave in jan (if hw wants to play football)

Ah, good to see this post.

Will be getting my e-cig today as well. As far as the effects are concerned, Ive talked to a few people and done some research. Its defininately an excellent alternative. Yes, it does give you nicotine, but thats like a caffeine addiction. Ive worked in a tobacco company in the past, and e cigs save you from the many other componants in a cig, most importantly the tar and the CO.

So how is it going? Does it give you the same feeling as a normal smoke?

It emulates a lot of things, for example, the one Ive ordered has a nicotine level and a taste defined as per my brand and strength. the 2 worries I have are firstly, does the vapor match up to the smoke of a usual cigarette, and if it can be a full time replacement. No point if I still smoke one a day with this, it has to be 0 smokes if Im using this

Yes,,,,it will be 4 weeks this friday comming.

It certainally feels like smoking. I actually get a "hit" when you inhail. I have never been able to give it up in the past so 4 weeks is quite the accomplishment. Have no desire to go back to the tobacco product.

It is almost like changing brands....after about 1 week you get used to it.

My recommendation is to start with a lighter dose....6-8 as it will be easier to eventually quit this.

If quitting smoking is a 10/10 with respect to difficulty, e-cigs help bring the diffuclty level to less than 2/10. Really not a problem. My only concern is that i am now addicted to them.

WIll try and cut the doseage back soon.

Really, great to hear that. Good going. Make sure you do not even have just 'that 1 smoke' ever. I quit cold turkey for 4 months a year back, and 'the one smoke' got me hooked again.

From what I see, I dont even care if I can quit this in the near future. If its not harming me, except for Nicotine and the cost(its like a caffeine addiction), it is letting me do an activity I really enjoy, without the ill effects.

Really excited about the package coming in today. Sick of this bloody habit.

Regarding your case, my friend cut dosage slowly, till hes come to the nicotine less cartridges now. Now just the psychological addicition remains. so its a good method.

Highly recommend it.......tell yourself you are just changing brands. You wil get used to the taste.

Not great because I have both Fellaini and Walcott (injured) so I may have to play 433. Unfortunately my 4th and 5th defenders are Davies and Demel 😕 considering spending my FT doing Demel -> Shorey (wig). I would prefer to save it though.

2FT dilemma. Nothing feels that wrong, but we all know there's a better team out there.

Almost went Silva last week but didn't and now that one choice fixture is gone. Worried about Mata now under boring Rafa. Like the look of Lallana even though his hair is crap.

Probably a good time to get rid of Fellaini with only bad fixtures to come. The obvious one to make way for a midfield upgrade would be Baines although ideally you'd want him for this week.

However if you're keen to keep the Everton duo at least for another few weeks then I'd look at doing a boring Davies -> Shorey trade. His stats are amazing and I can only see attacking returns to follow. Then you will have 2FT's for next week.

    Bardsley 4.8m
    Or
    OShea 5.0m

Im thinking OShea as hes not just coming back from injury and not as likely to recieve yellow cards.

Was all set to do Hangeland-> Bardsley but now i think im gonna do Hangeland-> OShea
Any reason you would go Bardsley instead?

I have 6.7m to replace Hangeland with but was planning on keeping 1-1.5m of that for future upgrade of my midfield.. HBA Sterling Michu Cazorla MacAnuff

Yes, plan to ditch Baines and get Aguero back (though not completely sold on losing Lambert - or Berb). Was thinking of double Sunderland rather than Stoke, but Stoke worth thinking about too.

Syalor represents my only successful transfer in the last 3 or 4 weeks! Not because he got any points, but because I ditched Hangeland for him, and would otherwise have played Hangeland last gw otherwise for a glorious -3. But yeah, Newc defence sucks, although I got him to rotate with Cuellar.

Geez I'd almost rather play Cuellar in his away games than Saylor at home. Consider finding another rotator with Cuellar if you can.

Just noticed my TV has gone up 2m since GW9. Has anyone else done better? I thought price rises weren't supposed to be as regular at this stage of the season. Lots of people must be taking hits.

I have fronline of Rvp, Ba, Berba and looking to get one of Suarez or Aguero in.
    Which one you would prefer?

Looking at fixtures and I actually think that transfer can wait until gw16-17.

The trouble is who would you sell? Silva and Sterling could be good options instead of interfering with that front line.

Suarez over Aguero for the time being... still prefer Tevez in the city frontline...

But if you're gonna wait anyway, there's plenty of time for a clear choice to present itself...

sold tevez for berba last week 🙁
Silva could be option that's for sure, I think I don't want sterling anymore after I have lost so may price rises and he's bit expencive to be rotated - stubborn and all that!

Suarez. Then get Aguero for the week that Suarez gets suspended for his 5th yellow card.

So do we know yet? Was that Aguero substitution last night because of injury, or was it just Mancini's tactical madness?

Considering bringing Silva in this week to avoid the price rise... was originally gonna swap him for Michu, but i noticed Evertons fixtures take a bit of a nose dive after this week... worth considering a swap for Fellaini instead?

For what Fellaini offers in goal threat, I'd be willing to keep him irrespective of the oppo. I can also see Micchu maintaining his form too.

This is the problem isn't it? Micchu, Fell and Stirling go well with two heavies in midpark but more importantly allow you good coverage in the forward line.

True enough, but an in-form David Silva trumps both of em for me... when he plays well City play well... and right now he's a bit of a bargain - 1 more decent return and that will change pronto...

Well yes he does but why not have him one as one of your two heavies and get three big guns upfront where the big points are?

I'm playing RVP/Tevez/Berba up front - i might swap that around in a few weeks when Uniteds fixtures become a little less enticing.. but for now i like my frontline as it is...

      a) will likely get you the most points, but the money you save from c) could make a big difference elsewhere, depends on the rest of your team.

For a captain pick, Ba although Giroud could have a big one especially considering he is in good form.

Morning DZ'ers, would love some advise on the below:

    Begovic, Juss
    Rafael, Baines, Hughes, Demel, Barnett
    Bale, Mata, Fellaini, Sterling, Michu
    Suarez, VP, Berba

    Which option is best:

A). Baines & Michu -> Silva & Cueller (with money left for Barnett -> Wisdom)

    Or

    B). Bale & Hughes -> Silva & Cueller

    ?

    Hey folks
I have 2 FT and £1.5m in the bank.

    Foster, Begovic
    Baines, Davies, Demel, Cuellar, Gorkks
    Nolan, Michu, Bale, Fellaini, Sterling
    Ba, RVP, Aguero

Thinking of bringing in mignolet for foster and saving FT.
    Thoughts please?!
    Thank you
