Another article-packed Friday finally comes to a close with our weekly look at a trio of overlooked options for the Gameweek ahead. With one of last week’s three, Jose Enrique, racking up an 18 point Fantasy Premier League (FPL) haul, our new protagonists have a lot to live up to…

Stephane Sessegnon

A total of 161 points in the previous campaign earned the Sunderland midfielder a starting price of 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but it’s fair to say he’s yet to vindicate his hefty cost. Sessegnon’s attacking potential saw him rack up seven goals and 12 assists last season, meaning he played a part in 45% of his side’s league goals, but Steven Fletcher’s arrival has seen the former Wolves man take up the mantle of talisman instead.

Prior to last week’s trip to Fulham, Sessegnon had failed to find the net but a spectacular strike at the Cottage, in addition to a run of four home games in the next four, has brought him back onto the radar. Ahead of his side’s crucial run of games, Martin O’Neill has revealed an upturn in self-belief could be all the midfielder needs to reignite his under-par campaign:

“Sometimes we have had to wait some time to see that type of form. His goals don’t have to be spectacular but he should score more for the ability he possesses. There was frustration about his game because he got himself into some great positions. You would not believe he would be suffering any sort confidence because his training has been very very good. He is getting sharper which is important. He should be able to score double figures with his ability and something he should be putting into this thought process.”

There’s no doubt the Sessegnon is a real punt for those considering his acquisition but if he can maintain his level of performance from last weekend, there’s clearly potential for points. Now down to 7.3 in FPL, he is priced at 7.7 in the Sky Sports game and, with an ownership of around 1% in both games, he could prove a real differential for those who fancy a real flutter over the next few Gameweeks.

Nicky Shorey

Having managed just a single clean sheet all season, Reading’s defensive resilience is not much of a selling point for Fantasy managers. Shorey, however, more than makes up for his side’s inability to keep out opponents – over the last few weeks, he has even rivalled Leighton Baines in terms of creativity from the back, with an assist against Everton last Saturday long overdue.

The 2-1 triumph over the Toffees earned Brian McDermott’s side their first win of the season and will boost confidence ahead of a run of games which pits them against four of the bottom six in the next four, double Gameweek 16 inclusive. With a substantial share of corner kicks also boosting his appeal, Shorey’s constant supply from left-back could well harvest more points hauls if the Reading frontmen can convert even a fraction of the opportunities provided.

A cut-price cost of 4.1 in FPL and 4.0 in the Sky Sports game, with 1.3% and 0.7% ownership respectively, he’s one to mull over for those Fantasy managers seeking a way to free up budget at the back for pricier acquisitions further up the field.

Jack Wilshere

It’s not just Arsenal’s trip to Villa tomorrow that looks appetising; a strong upcoming schedule could well prove profitable for Arsene Wenger’s troops. With that in mind, we turn our attentions to their fit-again midfielder after he continued his impressive return from injury by notching the opener in the 2-0 Champions League win over Montpellier.

Granted, Wilshere’s deep-lying role in the doubt-pivot alongside Mikel Arteta means he’s unlikely to match the potential of Santi Cazorla, but could possibly mirror the Spaniard for value if he carries his eye for goal onto the domestic stage. While Theo Walcott and Gervinho may vie for the right flank role, Wilshere now seems to be an automatic first XI pick again and could be an intriguing mid-price midfield punt over the next few. Priced at 6.4 in FPL and 6.0 in the Sky Sports game, with an ownership of around 1% in both games, he’s a relatively budget-friendly alternative to Cazorla’s 9.4 and Walcott’s 8.7 FPL price tags.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Yo Ryan, I've read Chris Glover's blog and why Fletch is due regression. But he also did go 5 games without a goal...I know his conversion rate is outrageous but with such a positive run of fixtures you've got to back him for a few goals. Selling Berba for him is another thing altogether though.

This is sort of my point....

Ask yourself "who will score more over the next 4 GW's???? Berba always has the potential to score....but if i were to lay a bet, i would have to puy my cash on Fletcher.

Did you really read the blog? a conversion rate is goals per shots. He is scoring a good amount of goals off very few shots. He can't sustain that conversion rate. Its got nothing to do with the amount of games he's played.

Yep, I do understand the conversion rate thing. I'm just using a little gut feeling here and of course being slightly biased...with 4 home games in 5 he is looking a strong option because he has notched 6 goals, 4 on the road and 2 at home. That's 2 in 4 homes games too. So you wouldn't put it past him to continue scoring because he gets into the positions to do so. And most importantly he's the only one getting these chances for the most part.

I won't stand in the way of anyones gut feeling. Just realise gut feelings result in punts and punts don't always work.

    Begovic (Gazzaniga)

Baines Cameron Cuellar (Wilkinson / Nelsen)

    Bale Mata Sterling Valencia (Fellani)

    Berbatov RVP Suarez

Thinking about doing Baines > Wisdom (Spurs away) & Berbatov > Tevez (Wigan away)

Feel I should have city coverage for wigan away & I'm happy to get rid of Baines, Wisdom has some nice fixtures coming up and looks a fixture in the team, what do you think? It will be a -4.

    Opinions welcomed.

My leader in my minileague has sold Tevez and it's unlikely he'll buy him back. Not fussed over overall rank which I guess affects it. Don't like Berba's fixtures atm. Can always put Giroud in for Tevez week after as rest of the team has ok fixtures.

I could do Baines, Berba and Foster –> Cuellar, Aguero and 4.6m GK over the next 2 weeks...

with downgrading Baines you can get Suarez/Tevez for Giroud/Berb or Silva, Bale for Feillaini.

Naturally if they suddenly did become a great attacking force Fletcher will do quite well. However is there enough evidence to suggest that Sunderland have turned the corner? I'm yet to be convinced.

There are several reasons you can see us scoring more goals

AJ = Starting to prove himself
Sess = Showed us a bit of his class last game
Fletcher = A cold-blooded assassin ready to pounce on anything
Larsson = Whips in a beautiful cross and prone to scoring screamers from free kicks

It's not exactly investable but you can see enough to suggest we might start scoring more.

Mate none of those details have changes since the start of the season. Don't use emotion to make an arguement. What I'm asking is what has changed because they haven't had a good season in attack so far.

Well AJ and Sess have showed signs of change by finally doing the business. Fletcher has never been a doubt. He is just unfortunately not getting the right service always. But if you saw AJ's pass to Fletcher against Fulham and AJ's corner for Cuellar's goal. There are glimpses of some real creativity seeping into our play.

You're not going to buy any of them and neither am I for the time being but no-one is really arguing there is much logic to buying them either. They're big punts but the fixtures allow for some upturn in success.

Ok I understand your arguement. I see its a fixture based decision despite the lack of form. But you are hoping that the upturn in fixtures will result in a change of form especially as you have noticed signs of improvement in your team. Its too early for me and I wouldn't be willing to lose an in form striker such as Berb or Ba.

i totally agree with this....the smart move would be to give it one more week and see if sunderland show some signs of life vs 11 men....but if the only way to get SUN cover is Berba>Fletcher.....you must admit that Fletcher is a better prospect vs WBA than Berba is to sto.

I would humbly suggest that you need not invest in sunderland attack. One defender or possibly Mignolet as well is all you need. They have a great defence so invest there.

I thought they needed one more week too before jump on Sess. But my thinking was i have Fellaini and Theo on the bench. Everton only scored one against Reading. I bought fellaini late-ish so not much value attached there. 5 games vs 3. Which include 4 home games.

Hence, the gamble, a week early.

I have Fellaini and Walcott as well. I'm content to start 4 defenders (who luckily all have home games) I just don't want to get rid of Fellaini who I believe is fixture proof with the way he has been playing.

There are incredibly good options around. The only thing that validates the punt are the fixtures and the DGW.

Also, Sess's price makes getting Fellaini back easier. One more reason why i went Sess over AJ.

Sess as you know is a player capable of reaching great heights as we saw last year. But apart from the last game (10 men) his form was terrible.

I disagree here. Sunderland played really well against Everton as well. Sess had 2 great goal scoring chances in that game. He really caught my fancy in that game.

Ryan, the thing worth noting about Sess is he is a OOP second striker and yes he has been off the boil and not getting the chances but if he were to see an upturn in success/fortune, I'd predict it wouldn't be long before we see people really considering him. After all, you can't have his talent playing OOP and not eventually turn that into something.

As mentioned, it's slightly biased. But having watched Sess all last season, he is really a fine player and we have yet to see his full capabilities this season. Either he's completely forgotten how to do the things he did before or he's had a quiet start being subservient to Fletcher. Time will tell and of course, I hope for our sake we see the best of Sess again!

I would agree with you Unreal. I had Sess for much of the second half of last season. I even had him at the start of last season when he struggled a bit. But it is a stab in the dark to pick him now when he is out of form and low on confidence. Although you could argue that he has turned the corner. So far I'm not convinced but that may change as I am fully aware of his potential.

    begovic
    rafael baines cueller
    michu cazorla sterling nasri
    berba rvp ba

have 1FT and 0.6m in the bank....the main sticking points are nasri and berba
Whats the consensus on berba here?...keep or ditch. My options are:
    A: nasri >> sessengon/AJ/lennon
    B: nasri + berba >>lallana/maloney/walters + tevez/suarez (for a hit)
    C: nasri + berba >> silva + lambert (for a hit)
    D: nasri + ba >> sessegnon + tevez (for a hit)
    E: berba >> fletcher
    F: save the FT

Had been planning to save the FT but since gw13+14 teams play at home, thinking doing the transfer now might be worth it to take advantage of the home games...am 75points behind in my ML:(

Captaining RVP a must this weekend? Everyone said it was last weekend...turned out very nice.

If I had Tevez or Suarez I would have captained them...alas RVP was the only option. 😀

Yeah, not like I woudl have captained Caz or Bale, but in hindsight me saying it would be a goalfest...doh! haha. I'm considering Defoe or Bale this week just because I can afford to and I'm out of the cup lol.

      I'll predict goals instead:

      Lambert - 1
      Michu - 1
      Sess - 1 goal, 1 assist
      Jelavic - 3

      🙂
