Fernando Torres finds the net again as Chelsea reach the World Club Championship final. Jose Enrique hopes to be fit for Liverpool’s home game with Villa, West Brom are optimistic on a return to training for Ben Foster, Liam Ridgewell and Claudio Yacob, while Hatem Ben Arfa’s hamstring problem is playing up again:

Chelsea 3 Monterrey 1
Chelsea saw off Mexican outfit Monterrey in their World Club Championship semi-final with a comfortable win yesterday. Intriguingly, Rafa Benitez moved David Luiz to the double pivot in front of the back-four, which allowed Branislav Ivanovic to shift over to centre-half, with Cesar Azpilicueta returning at right-back. Further up the field, Juan Mata moved over to the right flank, with Oscar handed a start behind Fernando Torres as Victor Moses dropped out. Ashley Cole teed up Mata for the opener – the Spaniard has now scored in four back-to-back matches, while Torres grabbed the second; his run of five goals in three games under Benitez is his best spell since moving to the club from Liverpool. Chelsea’s third came courtesy of an own goal before the Mexican’s notched a late consolation.

Post-match, Benitez spoke of Luiz’s change of position. While admitting it may be a one-off decision, the new man in charge conceded it does give him food for thought – with Oriol Romeu out for six months after undergoing knee surgery, Luiz’s versatility may well boost his chances of game time under Benitez.

“The main idea for playing David Luiz there was for this game because Monterrey are good between the lines where they like to play little penetrating passes. They have the left winger going inside a lot so we wanted more players in this area. I know David Luiz well when he was at Benfica and played centre-back, right-back, left-back or defensive midfield and he can regain a lot of balls and at the same time he can play the ball. He can win it in the air and has fresh legs. It was mainly for this game but it is always an option for the future.”

Jose Enrique remains cautious over returning to action this weekend after being subbed off early with a hamstring problem in Liverpool’s win at West Ham last Sunday. Speaking to the club’s official website, the left-back revealed:

“I am okay, but I don’t know if I’ll be ready for the game. It’s nothing bad, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to play. I’ve had some treatment and then we will see. I hope I can be fit for the game.”

The non-committal statement leaves Enrique’s Fantasy owners in something of a predicament ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Liverpool’s strong home form, allied with an eye-catching run of games, is set to earn them plenty investment as they look to continue their climb up the table – while Enrique’s recent form suggests he could well be primed for points, a possible absence for a couple of weeks may persuade many to sell as the schedule begins to pick up pace. Rodgers’ Friday press conference will be keenly awaited, then, with Glen Johnson’s back-to-back double figure returns in the last two presenting us with an alternative route into the Reds’ defence.

West Brom assistant boss Keith Downing rolled out an injury update ahead of this weekend’s home showdown with West Ham. Speaking on the possible availability of Liam Ridgewell, Claudio Yacob and Ben Foster, he revealed:

“None of them are training at the moment but we’re hopeful we’ll have them all back in later this week, maybe Thursday or Friday. Obviously we’re going to see how they do during that day or two. Ridgewell’s injury is a strange one because it looked innocuous and he sort of played the ball down the line and then felt something pop. He obviously couldn’t carry on, and knowing Liam as I know him, he will generally play on in a fair bit of discomfort. Having said that, I don’t think it’s as serious as we first thought it was when he came off. We’re hopeful that all three will be involved in some level of training by the end of the week.”

A potential return for Foster would surely boost the Baggies chances of picking up a clean sheet after a recent run of poor defensive displays. Steve Clarke’s side have failed to keep out their opponents since Gameweek 10 – coincidentally, Foster’s last appearance before he was sidelined after a groin operation. Indeed, Foster has registered four clean sheets in six at the Hawthorns this term and with three home games in the next five (WHM, NOR, FUL) West Brom’s defence may be a little more appealing.

Yacob’s comeback could be crucial for James Morrison’s owners. The Scot dropped deeper to cover for the Argentine’s absence last weekend and is likely to continue alongside Youssouf Mulumbu if Yacob fails to make it. Ridgewell returned to the first-team fold at Arsenal last week after a one-game rest but lasted just five minutes before being replaced by Goran Popov – with Clarke admitting he was prepared to rest and rotate over the festive schedule earlier this month, it seems unlikely he will take any chances with the trio.
Hatem Ben Arfa is a doubt once again for Newcastle ahead of tomorrow’s home game with City. The Frenchman only returned from a hamstring injury at Fulham last Monday but, according to Alan Pardew, has yet to fully recover:

“His hamstring is still a problem and he is a doubt. We are looking weak with injuries and suspensions and even after this morning we are sweating on Hatem for the game at the weekend.”

Ben Arfa’s possible absence would be a real blow for the Magpies as they look to address a run of just one win in the last seven Gameweeks. Pardew’s recent change of formation to 4-3-3 had an instant impact upon Ben Arfa’s Fantasy fortunes – fielded on the left of a front three at the Cottage, he fired home his first goal since Gameweek 3 to hint at his potential. Stationed mainly wide right in a 4-4-2 for much of the season, Ben Arfa’s appeal has been drastically curtailed but with Pardew returning to his favoured formation, he had started to creep back onto Fantasy radars. Given the club’s current injury situation, though, Pardew will likely be cautious with Ben Arfa for fear of losing him over the packed Christmas program, with Sylvain Marveaux likely to deputise against the champions should he be ruled out.

    Ok, the million dollar question......

If you were allowed ONLY ONE until the Jan wildcard, who would be most important to have?

    Bale or Mata

    Hey tinker,

    My current team is :

    Jask,
    Demel, Cameron, Enrique
    Fellani, Snodgrass, Walcott, Sess
    Fletcher, Roonpig (c), Suarez

    Subs: Ming, Ridg, Shorey, Mata

    1. Is the team and subs right for this week. Have no transfers left with 2.9 left in bank
    2. Next week thinking to take Torres/ Tevez in for Fletcher for long term move. Which one do you say seems a good long term punt
    3. Sess to Silva / Bale. Again you need to tell me which one would you have
    4. If Suarez falils this GW then, Roonpig, Torres and Tevez, Bale for Sess - looks like kneejerk but could pay off

Well, I'm not sure why you've singled me out but I'll tell you my thoughts...

not sure on likelihood of Demel and Ridgewell starting but assuming both do, I'd put Ridgewell in ahead of Demel, especially with Juusi in net. Shorey also looks a handy sub to have as he will play and at least has the chance of attacking returns if nothing else.

As for your attack, it's just about who to captain... Suarez or Rooney for me.

I'd take Torres and Bale probably. Only saying Torres over Tevez because we at least know Torres will play every game and looks in good form.

I don't understand the 4th point sorry! I wouldn't sell Suarez to be honest.

            Thanks Sir

            1. I am going to play Shorey ahead of Demel and Ridgwell. Is this a fair point?
All 3 would be playing at home ( Shorey, Cameron and Enrique)
            2. I need City cover for upcoming games. I guess i would get a City defender as no
options left. As you saying I shouldnt take out Suarez. Any other options to get
City cover. Walcott to Silva doesnt seem right as Silva doesnt look in form. If for
City defender which one do you prefer Clichy or Nastatic. Clichy would give
            attacking returns.

              Nasty of Clichy.

Cover doesn't apply to attacker IMO.

I would personally prefer a starting Ridgewell to Shorey to be honest.

If in doubt, don't make any transfers.

I say 'much prefer' but I suppose it depends on the defender. If you could afford Nasty, GJ or Mert then it would work.

I think the whole argument could be moot as I'm not sure anyone in the City attack is worth it right now...

I forgot you were an Estuary. I suppose you could say that of all the players with similar injuries, two percent played the next game or something. But I don't think that would be a valid prediction about a single future event. You could only make it about a large set of similar future events. Maybe I'm wrong.

I think it's a pointless argument. I think it's there's much point trying to read into it more than translating it to: "I doubt he'll play, but there's a small chance."

Demel (wba) will he play full game?
    Cameron (EVERTON)
Cuellar (man utd) - nuff said
    Enrique (VILLA) - Injured?
    Clyne (NO GAME)

Have to play 4-3-3 (Also got Puncheon Mata not playing)

If you give him the chances he will score. It is inescapable.

His finishing is class if you watch his goals.

The main problem was that he was involved too much in buildup and not enough of a target. The fat waiter appears to be fixing this. He is now a striker.

"His finishing is class if you watch his goals."

    Appreciate some advice:

    Foster/Beg
    Cueller/Gibbs/Wilkinson/Wisdom/Gorks
    Silva/Caz/Sess/Michu/Kanu
    RVP/Suarez/Berb

    Do I:

A: Gorks to Nelson (better fixs)
    B: Gorks to Davies
    C: Wisdom to Davies
    D: Wisdom to Nelson
    E: Wisdom to Hughes?

    Thanks all

You might be surprised - when I took my exams there were some I was convinced I'd failed on but I passed easily. As long as everyone found it tough you've got a good shot. Ah well, no sense worrying about it since you can't affect it now, just enjoy this nice period of not having any study to do 🙂

Glen Johnson is a poor enough defender. Nastasic is decent. Vidic is savage.

fair enough but budget is the most crucial part in FF. otherwise we would all have rooney rvp ageuro up front followed by mata silva bale felliani michu

I could go with those three until wc, though

Just looking for a def that would get the most points:

                Sagna
                Johnson
                Nasty

Saying Glen Johnson is classic 'moving out one player, must get similar-priced cos it means similar quality player' reaction. A mistake I reckon when there are sub 5m Stoke/Hammers/Norwich players getting similar or better points.

I'm in a world of trouble. I know I'm destined for a downward arrow, but with the Jan wildcard around the corner I'm trying to make do. In second in my mini league, 30 points adrift of leader:

    Jussi (Bego)

McCartney (?) Enrique (?) Evans (?) Baird Zabaleta

Pienaar Sessegnon Fellaini Puncheon (x) Sterling

    RVP Pogrebnyak Tevez

Somehow with this team I'm about 40kth. Do I make wholesale changes? I know this week I'm destined for a red arrow, I just want to limit the damage.

1 FT 4.7m in the bank. Any suggestions welcome.

Why are so many people so desperate to ditch Cuellar all of a sudden? The DGW is irrelevant. He's still a decent, dirt cheap, bargain defender with much potential for a big haul every now and then.

I've had him since GW3, and will be keeping until I have a reason to get rid, like a long term injury.
