Our Friday night regular returns with a trio of overlooked alternatives for your consideration ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline. We’ve turned to a pair of London-based protagonists with strong upcoming schedules on the horizon and scoured the bargain basement for a cut-price defensive option at the DW…

Shaun Wright-Phillips

No more than a mere bench-warmer in Mark Hughes’ last few matches in charge at QPR, the winger has made his way into the starting lineup under Harry Redknapp. With Jamie Mackie moved to the lone frontman role in favour of the ineffectual Djibril Cisse, Wright-Phillips has been handed a berth on the right of the R’s midfield as the new man in charge looks to engineer a climb out the drop zone.

While the likes of Esteban Granero and Junior Hoilett have been peripheral in Redknapp’s thoughts, Wright-Phillips seems to have his manager’s faith and justified his inclusion by producing an assist in last week’s 2-2 draw at Wigan. It sums up QPR’s season under Hughes that this was the winger’s first attacking returns of the campaign but with three home games in the next four (FUL, new, WBA, LIV) he’s afforded a chance to build on last weekend’s output.

Priced at 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.1 in the Sky Sports game, it’s no surprise that Wright-Phillips has an ownership of around the 1% mark in both games but, if Redknapp is to work his magic, he could be an integral figure in his side’s battle against relegation.

Jan Vertonghen

The Belgian’s start to life at the Lane has been a distinctly underwhelming one. Vertonghen arrived in the Premier League with a goal-getting pedigree – 14 strikes in his last two seasons at Ajax is indicative of his attacking sensibilities but so far, he’s found the net just once, with a single assist also accrued.

Two clean sheets in 16 games sums up Tottenham’s lack of resilience at the back but with Benoit Assou-Ekotto soon to return from a knee injury, Andre Villas-Boas’ side could be set for an upturn in defensive returns. With a superb run of fixtures to follow (SWA, STOK, avl, sun, REA, qpr) Vertonghen looks a decent differential shout not just for this weekend but all the way up to the winter wildcard in Gameweek 22.

Priced at 6.3 in FPL and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game, he’s far from cheap but as his Eredivisie stats suggest, Vertonghen has the class to prosper as Villas-Boas looks to take advantage of the festive schedule and boost his side’s chances of a top three finish.

Ronnie Stam

A raft of injuries and suspensions at the back for Wigan has afforded the Dutchman a run of starts in recent weeks. With the treatment room at the DW still seemingly packed to the rafters, Stam looks set to continue on the right of Roberto Martinez’s midfield four, with Emmerson Boyce dropping into the back-three to cover for the likes of Gary Caldwell and Ivan Ramis.

Over his four consecutive starts, Stam hasn’t exactly propelled himself onto Fantasy radars. No goals, assists or clean sheets hardly offer too much hope but his out of position berth and rock-bottom FPL price of 3.8 may appeal to those Fantasy managers looking for a cheap defender who would free up budget further up the pitch. Priced at 4.0 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of under 3% in FPL, there are few, if indeed any, players who come cheaper with the guarantee of a start this weekend as the Latics look to put the brakes on Norwich’s recent unbeaten run.

Ok, I have been very vocal about it though. Just saying as a Rooney owner I am very worried about RVP cause he is due a big score. But as a RVP owner id be worried about a rest cause this is by far the easiest fixture they have during the christmas schedule.

Don't think the fixture matters that much really, more the difference in days between the GW's. A whole week till the next one after tomorrow so RVP's more likely to be rested in a game(if at all) between GW 18-21 with the matches 3 days apart.

I dunno, if you've held him this long you could easily regret losing him next week. I have Enrique, Bale and Sterling and have Sess and Cuellar on the bench. The transfer I want to do is to bring Mata in for Sess, which will mean downgrading someone else, I want to wait till next week to do this, so I don't want to waste an FT. Just gotta hope one of those three gets some game time.

Hmm. Fancy Spurs not to have it all their own way then with Swansea playing the 451/433. Norwich matched them last week and out fought them in the middle of the park. I'd say Spurs are similar to Arsenal in that they prefer to be on the ball than winning it back, so don't think this game will be one way traffic.

True, and that's why I was asking the question as I'm curious as to where Lennon has been playing. In a 433 he'd be in my thinking as a replacement for Larrsson (although anyone would be a worthy replacement for Larsson).

where have you been the last month? he was a bandwagon on here who then managed 5 points in 7 games.
he's OOP as long as diarra is injured, he was good against newcastle on monday so looks safe for a start this weekend at least. i'd persoanlly avoid, he's OOP but in a pretty lame phil jones at blackburn sense. a safe starting place is a must too and he just doesn't look to have one

As a Liverpool supporter my opinion is Sterling 100% won't play from the start tomorrow but will definitely come on in 2nd half whether were leading or not. Reason is our fixture list, we play Villa(h) then 7 days later Fulham(h). It will give him a good 14 day break. Because after Fulham we have Stoke(a),QPR(a) and Sunderland(h) with only 4 day breaks inbetween those games and we'll need him in those games apart from the QPR where he may get another rest.

As for Enrique I think he'll play because he only has a tight hamstring and was only subbed pre caution wise against the Hammers. He played through this when we played Udinese and since we had only 2 days to recover he obviously felt it again and didn't want to risk it. I do think he'll play but it wouldn't surprise me if they leave him out because they'll want him fit for the other 4 games after this weekends and also it is Villa so they may decide it's not worth risking him anyway since Downing has been playing well lately.

I read it but why just rest Sterling, he didn't mention anybody else being rested, he hasn't got a knock and he's 17, he could play everyday, so why just Sterling?

because he's 17 well 18 now and he won't be able to play all those games after which are more important and when they'll need him the most.

What that means is they could start him so put him in your team but if they decide to leave him out it will only because they don't want to risk it against a Villa side at home which they should win even without him in the team.
