Liverpool pick themselves up from last week’s defeat by Villa to sweep aside an insipid Fulham at Anfield. Steven Gerrard, Stewart Downing and Martin Skrtel all register Fantasy Premier League (FPL) double figure returns as the Reds move up to eighth in the table:

On the Up

Steven Gerrard
A goal and two assists against Fulham this evening was the Liverpool skipper’s highest haul of the campaign so far, with maximum bonus points also likely to follow. Gerrard has now scored or assisted in three of the Reds’ four games since the return of Lucas to the midfield – a clear sign of the Brazilian’s impact on his Fantasy prospects.

Stewart Downing
The former Middlesbrough and Villa man had deputised for Jose Enrique at left-back last weekend but with the Spaniard fit and available, Downing was shifted to the right of the front three. A goal and assist highlighted his potential if given a consistency of game time – he has now started five of the last six for the Reds.

Liverpool Defence
The Reds recovered from last week’s home loss to Villa to register their fifth clean sheet in the last seven at Anfield. Although Glen Johnson’s recent run of attacking returns came to an end, Jose Enrique’s assist for Luis Suarez’s late goal means the Spaniard has averaged 10 points per game over his last four at home, while Martin Skrtel’s opener took his tally to 64 points – just two less than Johnson for the season so far.

Luis Suarez
It looked set to be another frustrating afternoon for the Uruguayan’s owners but he returned to goalscoring ways for the first time since Gameweek 12 with a last-minute strike sealing an emphatic win for the hosts. While a trip to Stoke could pose problems, the Reds then face QPR and Sunderland, handing Suarez the chance to continue his return to form.

Going Down

Raheem Sterling
Brendan Rodgers had hinted in midweek the teenager was looking a little fatigued of late and the Liverpool boss backed up his threat by resting Sterling against the Cottagers. The winger was on the bench for the first time since breaking into the first XI back in Gameweek 2 and, although he managed a brief sub appearance late on, with Downing in form and Suso impressing, Sterling’s guaranteed game time may yet come into question.

Dimitar Berbatov
Handed a lone forward role as Martin Jol rolled out a 4-5-1, the Bulgarian dropped deeper after the break as the visitors moved to 4-4-2 in order to chase a two-goal deficit. His short-term fixtures look superb (SOU, SWA, wba, WIG) but with blanks in each of his last seven, Berbatov is severely trying the patience of his 10.7% FPL owners.

Fulham Defence
Four goals conceded took their total to 33 against – only Reading and Wigan have shipped more. Martin Jol’s side have now conceded 22 on the road, the worst defensive away record in the league – those above-mentioned three home games are becoming more crucial than ever if Fulham are to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle; they have won just once in the last 10 matches.

we're still working to figure it out. Ideally we'd like you guys to have at least some say in which team you get but it is a bit tough as we don't know all which managers will be relegated so it's hard to know which 3 teams will be available for each league and there's such a short turnaround between gw 19 and gw 20

I need Villa to score tomorrow too.

For those of you that went without Man City 'coverage' this week; firstly, congratulations, and secondly, what were your reasons for doing so?

Frankly, I'm amazed that players with seriously good ranks didn't feel the need to bring in Aguero, Tevez or Silva. Was it the uncertainty of who would start? Did you see the Reading - Arsenal game earlier in the week, or know that Reading had conceded 13 goals in 4 games?

I was at the Madjeski on Monday, and no word of a lie, they were diabolical. Gorkss was the main culprit in my eyes and I see he didn't start today. Did you somehow know that would be the case?! 🙂 You must have because playing Alex Pearce today made THE difference, IMO.

Monday night, I didn't hesitate to put in Yaya and Tevez to partner Silva. I was that sure 4 or more goals would be conceded at the Etihad.

I'm genuinely interested to know, so if Epic Fail or others are about and can explain their thinking, I'm all ears.

But do you watch the games and see how poor the form is of some teams? Some players show incredible patience in my opinion - prepared to pick a player for 4-6 weeks regardless of what other players are doing. I need to learn this as I'm genuinely at a loss at how players with great ranks didn't bite on Man City players home to a poor Reading going into today's game.

Couldn't really dump any of my front 3 (RVP, Suarez & Ba) for someone who I wasn't absolutely convinced was going to start. I thought it would be Dzeko + another, but couldn't be certain in the slightest.

Fellaini to Yaya was on my mind all week, but then I'd have to bench Snodgrass and didn't really want to do that as his away form has been great of late.

But, basically, I think those of us without got a bit lucky!

Appreciate the honesty Bubbles! I certainly think a part of it was not wanting to dismantle the front 3 of teams (Suarez, Ba, RVP all had favourable fixtures, for example).

Santi ripping it up would've caused hesitation for those thinking a straight swap for Silva, and Bale's return probably also made a difference.

ive none and argued on here that Silva is a luxury.
Rotation is a huge issue upfront for me and tbh Tevez/Aguero are out of form tho i do expect Aguero to pick up soon, Nasty looks decent entry into back and im monitoring him,
Still tho no urgency to bring City players in imo.

Serious question, would appreciate an honest answer. Did you watch the Reading - Arsenal game on Monday?

I simply want to rule out if I'm too close to this game, and need to not analyse the form, stats and everything.

Not at the ground like you, but on Sky. Sometimes I think you can get a different impression from watching live at the match itself so you might have a point. Expected Reading to shut up shop as far as possibl but also just got a bit lucky not having City cover. Not that it mattered - got a crap score this week anyway.

As i posted last night...the worst thing that could have happened for FPL returns was that Arsenal stuck five past Reading...That backs to the wall defence was entirely predictable from that point on,...Reading are rubbish but the big returns are more likely to come when they try to come out to play for some points...Expect more of the same...

Cheers Wakey. Reading were not exactly expansive against Arsenal... they just didn't get close to their players. I suppose Man City play in a different way with less width, plus Pearce coming in and Karacen back, must have made a difference too.

        Just absolutely gobsmacked!

in an ideal world (if i had a wildcard) i would have had city players. just didnt have the free transfers or space for any players though, so it was cross fingers, put on a nappy and hope for the best at 3pm.
the irony of it only being 1-0 was it was the best result for silva as it ensured him bps with not enough goalscorers to steal them.

Perhaps I should consider points hits as more precious. I'm certainly being burnt by every -4 points that I've taken (this week Fletcher > Tevez). The game is certainly trying to teach me patience at the moment!

What I find amazing/bemusing/shocking even, is that you were so prepared to accept a Tevez hat-trick, or a goal and a couple of assists from Silva, and to put that down as one that got away as though we are powerless. Yes, it costs 4 points for extra transfers, but we have the means to put in exactly how we think will score highest in any given week. There's clearly a balance to be struck, but this game seemed such a cert.

None of my ML rivals captained a Citeh player. One even captained Torres! I really must be missing something...

I only went with Silva for the game, in my opinion over the last 2 or 3 games he has been there best player, creating chances for others but they havent been taking them. Patience is what has helped me most this season, last GW I made my first rash transfer of the season, bringing in Rafael when I had told myself all season not to touch the rotation minefield of the Utd backline.

You have to remember the game lasts 38 weeks, if Tevez racked up 12pts sure it would benefit my main rivals and not me, but I think to myself next week chances are Tevez wont even start so those 12pts get evened out as one of my 3 strikers will have matched that total over the 2 weeks. If that makes any sense!?

That's a great way of looking at it. Tevez is a rotation threat and I'm forgetting that often a transfer out can cause a 4 pt hit which offsets any points they brought in, in the short term. I obviously know that, but can lose sight of it.

I compared Silva and Tevez closely before making my captain choice, and Tevez's 6.4 PPG swung it for me. Perhaps I was being a little greedy in thinking Silva is less likely to score goals and maybe Tevez has more 'ceiling' in terms of explosive point weeks.

I'll stick to one or no transfers per week until the January WC and take stock!

Definitely try to avoid hits 🙂 It can be hard, making transfers is part of the fun to be honest! I'm desperate to go a week without a transfer so I can have two spare for an emergency, but there is always an injury or suspension needing taken care off at this time of year. Hence why I'm stuck with Bosingwa in my team!

I dont think you made a bad decision with Tevez as captain by the way, if you thought he would start then you made the right choice. Parking the bus or not, you would expect City to win that game at least by 2 or 3.

Downgrade Tevez! You have Silva as coverage + Tevez is a rotation risk. Use the money from that downgrade to upgrade Sterling to Bale. IF you are short then downgrade Foster also.
