Gareth Bale blasts a hat-trick to confirm his returns to fitness and heavy-hitting fantasy status, while the Potters find a cutting edge to recover from an early setback and consign Liverpool to defeat. Here’s part two of the Boxing Day Stock Check…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
A devastating hat-trick took Bale to nine goals for the season and gives the Welshman six goals in his last six league appearances. Incredibly, Bale has scored just two goals and only one of his four assists at White Hart Lane, proving to be a deadly weapon on the road. With strong fixtures to come, Bale’s form will bring him huge investment with significant FPL price rises to follow.

Jermain Defoe
His opening strike for Spurs took the England man to ten for the season and keeps Defoe bubbling in the FPL rankings, some 11 points ahead of Wayne Rooney. Bale’s form and his popularity as a midfield acquisition will doubtless dent Defoe’s appeal but Defoe shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. He has started every league match since Gameweek 11 and has never gone more than three starts without scoring.

The Spurs Defence
Their strong run continues: Andre Villas-Boas’ rearguard have now kept four clean sheets in the last five after earning their third consecutive shut-out this evening. With their fixtures remaining strong (sun RDG qpr), there’s no reason to suggest that this kind of form won’t continue in the short-term at least, with Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris justifying their current rankings in our Watchlist.

Steven Gerrard
The converted spot-kick at the Britannia gave Gerrard a third goal in three league starts and means that he’s now delivered returns in five of his last six outings. As tonight’s display demonstrated, however, consistency remains an issue in the Liverpool camp.

Jon Walters
One of the most unfashionable Fantasy assets around, Walters demonstrated what he is capable of by delivering a brace to notch his biggest returns of the season. With five goals and three assists so far, Walters has delivered strong value for his 6.4 price tag and, if Michael Kightly retains the right-wing role shifting Walters up in support of the lone striker, he could yet go on providing profit.

Kenwyne Jones
With strong and reliable budget options thin on the ground up front, Jones has quietly established a starting role in Tony Pulis’ side at the expense of Peter Crouch and is taking his opportunity. While the Potters attack is far from potent, Jones looks an effective blunt instrument and has provided two goals in three games, with an assist tonight – a good return on a 5.0 FPL price tag.

Going Down

Ryan Shawcross & Geoff Cameron
Both were teetering on the tightrope and both toppled off with bookings in the victory over Liverpool. The Stoke defensive stalwarts, with over 40% FPL ownership between them, will now miss the home league clash with Southampton this coming weekend.

The Villa Defence
Having conceded just two goals in five matches between Gameweeks 12-17, Paul Lambert’s back four have simply capitulated in the last two matches, shipping 12 goals to Chelsea and Spurs. With five conceded to City and three to United, it’s becoming clear that Villa are all too easily disposed of by the bigger sides. While fixtures are obliging in the coming weeks, confidence in the Villa rearguard has been shattered.

Steven Caulker
Caulker has, on occasions, looked a strong option within the Spurs back four, having enjoyed a run of starts from Gameweek 6-11. Since then, however, he has been subject to heavy rotation with the likes of Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen all vying for the centre-back roles. Caulker was benched again today and with Benoit Assou-Ekotto close to a return at left-back, it appears the Vertonghen/Gallas partnership could emerge as the established first choice option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If Ba leaves early in Jan i think there's a high chance I'll get Papiss Cisse in my Jan WC. Newc are bound to turn things around in the second half of the season.

Depends on who else you have in defence. Both are good. I wouldn't take a hit to do both though. You're not going to make up the 4 points.

I'd do Yaya to Bale if you have other solid defenders. Otherwise B.

These big hitting midfielders keep coming to the fore.

Bale this week, Cazorla a few weeks ago, Mata's been so consistent, and Silva can chip in. That's even without mentioning Michu and Fellaini.

There's no striker other than the obvious RVP who is delivering on these scales.

Anybody think that going with 5 of these big hitters, with RVP and 2 mid priced forwards e.g. Berba and Lambert, is the way to go?

Deflection in or out of the box makes a difference, as does one that changes the direction of the ball.

The Shawcross one changed significantly when it hit the player. If it carried on in the same direction it would have counted.

Could someone please clear something up for me in relation to FPL rules....

If a player plays a pass/long ball from his own half, which then touches an opposition player, before falling to a team mate, which team mate then scores, like what happened with Stoke's 1st goal, does that not go down as an assist, because the assister played the pass from inside his own half??

Was the opposition player outside/inside the box? I thought that was the rule.

Walters was inside (I think?). Bale was outside.

Hmmmm. I know that rule is that if the opposition player is inside the box and deflects it to the player it will stand as the defender's assist. If he is outside the box and deflects it to the player then it is not an assist.

An identical situation was also the Tottenham 2 goal, with Dembele playing the ball inside his half.... Touches a Villa player... Falls to Bale.

If the defender was in the box when he touched the ball, should be an assist...I think.

It's to do with the opposition player; if he's outside the area and it's a significant deflection, it will be taken off.

Own half pass does not equal assist if opposition player changes the flight of the ball

Wrong. It's to do with the opposition player - if the defender was inside the area he'd get the assist for it, whether or not Shawcross was in his own half.

It's quite clear in rules. It would have been an assist if the defender was in the area. If he is outside the area then it's only an assist if the defender doesn't significantly alter the course of the ball. He clearly did in this case

shawcross doesnt get an assist, because of a significant deflection? RVP got an assist when the defender headed it away in the completely opposite direction!

Touches from defenders inside the box are treated differently to those made outside the box.

These have been the rules all season, nothing new here. It's all swings and roundabouts anyways, sure you'll be on the positive end of a dubious decision at some point.

Did Berbatov play well today? Assume he is the best option to replace Rooney? Other forwards are Suarez and RVP.

Unfortunately we'd need the whole of the Stoke midfield too. Defence starts from the front.

It's not about defence so much as it is about style of football. ManU win games by scoring more than opposition, Stoke win games by closing their defence and trying to get something out of corners and free kicks. Why would Fergie gamble on keeping cleen sheets to get the wins when they have RVP and Rooney. He knows they can score.

Have to say my team is starting to feel alot better and my scoring more consistent over the last couple of weeks as I have brought back dependable players, eg Mata a couple weeks back and Bale this week. Think I'm going to get Ba back in; you know what you are going to get and I hate pulling in low scoring weeks on risky players who fail to deliver.
