As the frantic festive period moves into its final leg, we’ve one last set of selections left to roll out. For our first article of 2013, we’ve opted for a trio of overlooked midfield options, all with strong looking home fixtures ahead of them in Gameweek 21. Here’s hoping they can follow the lead of Kenwyne Jones from last time round

Steven Gerrard

Week after week, the Liverpool skipper continues to climb the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings yet, due to a multitude of strong midfield options, remains overlooked. While the return of Lucas has helped Gerrard take up a more advanced role, he has still managed to produce when fielded deeper – as demonstrated in Sunday’s win at QPR.

A Loftus Road assist maintained a run which has harvested attacking returns in each of the last five Gameweeks, bringing three goals, four assists and six FPL bonus points from Gameweek 16 onwards. Although he seems to have moved down the pecking order when it comes to free-kicks, Gerrard still has a fair share of corners, in addition to penalty duties to fall back on – as demonstrated in the recent defeat at Stoke.

While many of the premium midfielders are occasionally prone to rest and rotation, Gerrard has played every minute of the season under Brendan Rodgers – a clear sign of his importance to the Reds’ cause. Now up to 104 FPL points – joint-fifth for midfielders – Gerrard is also just seven points behind Luis Suarez but while the latter has an ownership over 25%, his captain is installed in just 5% of teams. Coming in at 9.3 in FPL and 7.8 in the Sky Sports game, Gerrard plays host to Sunderland on Wednesday and is likely to be crucial once again as Rodgers’ side look for their fourth win in five at Anfield.

Oscar

While Gerrard offers security of starts, our next pick is a little more risky. Having started on the bench last weekend, we’re backing Oscar for a start as Chelsea welcome neighbours QPR to the Bridge on Wednesday evening. Since Gameweek 14, the Brazilian has alternated in and out of the first XI on a game-by-game basis and if the pattern continues, he could be set to feature from the kick-off against Harry Redknapp’s strugglers.

With a goal and three assists in the last three, including a 12 point cameo against Villa over 24 minutes in Gameweek 19, Oscar seems to be benefitting from Benitez’s rotation and tactical approach – he had previously produced just two assists in 10 games under Roberto Di Matteo. Coming in at 7.8 in FPL and 5.8 in the Sky Sports game, with a FPL ownership of 1.3%, he offers a mid-price alternative to Juan Mata and Eden Hazard and may well appeal to those who fancy a real punt on the Blues midfield before the winter wildcard comes into play.

Aaron Lennon

Our final pick is another first-team regular. Few had anticipated Lennon to play such a pivotal part in Tottenham’s season under Andre Villas-Boas but, along with Sandro, he is one of only two players to start all 20 of his side’s league games this term. A consistency of game time has proved beneficial – the former Leeds winger has already played more minutes than 2011/12, and has equalled his number of goals and bettered his bonus haul from the previous campaign.

Lennon heads into today’s home showdown against Reading with a goal and assist over his last couple of appearances and with Gareth Bale suspended for the hosts, his contribution may well be crucial against a stubborn Royals rearguard that has conceded just once in their last three. Crucially, though, Lennon looks set to be up against Ian Harte if Brian McDermott keeps faith in his rearguard – his speed down the flank could give the veteran a chasing as Villas-Boas goes in search of a third straight win.

Priced at 7.1 in FPL and 6.0 in the Sky Sports game, Lennon continues to fly under the radar, with an ownership of just 6%, despite accruing 85 points so far – just one less than Everton’s Steven Pienaar, for example.

    Oh sh...
7.30pm over here in Australia, finally getting home for New Years Celebrations. Happy New Year everyone!
My team is a mess, Clyne, Enrique, Michu, Shorey and Ba (has there been any further news/rumours?) WC is planned for next week I think so Enrique out for who as a one week punt?

    A. Clichy/Nastasic/Zabaleta (STK)
    B. Azpilicueta (QPR)
    C. Evans (wig)
    D. Other defender under 5.9

If Ba is likely to stay for now I will probably WC after GW 24, in which case I would choose Azpilicueta for QPR stk as opposed to Man C's STK ars

I'd be tempted with Azp - CHE look decent in defence and he's getting forward. Should be safe to start this week with Terry still out (I think) and Luiz playing CM.

If WCing in GW24, then I'd go for Gibbs (what I did this week....) 🙂

Ive got Sagna and Walcott and Id like to have the flexibilty of getting Pod or Cazorla come GW23. Sont expect a clean sheet for sou or MCI either. Not sure when I will WC. Either ASAP or GW24..all deoends on Ba really.

Ah ok, yeah makes sense to have 2 ARS attackers for the DGW.

Go Azp then imo even though there's a chance he'll get rotated when Terry is back

I think he will actually, but if not I have Ruiz coming off the bench against a beaten up WBA. Tempted to actually captain Michu, because he'll either start or be out completely. Tripling with Vorm, Chico and Michu is enough a risk though, so I wont bother 🙂

If he doesn't start, he will most definitely make a cameo from the bench.

Ideally, it would be RVP, Michu, Mata, Walcott. In that order. Michu and Mata are doubts though, so I would probably choose either RVP or Walcott.

Oh. Well I've had Suarez for ages, got Mata before his monster run, got Sterling cheap and got fellani cheap too. I have done quite well in that regard

Didn't get Suarez cheap, haven't got Mata yet, got Sterling cheap, didn't get Michu or Fellaini cheap.

Got Rafa cheap, got Bego cheap, Santi cheap that's about it really.

Walters plus 69. The rest are primed to return great points. Would you seriously bench ANY of Theo, Juan, Berbalish, Reliant or Bucktooth anyway?

Your options are really only Snod, Punch and Walters.

Without checking FPL, Bale is banned for this New Year gameweek but is available for the weekends FA cup fixtures (dunno who Spurs have).....hence 5th of January. He is banned for one match from any F.A sanctioned footy.

No way, Hazard was poor in thr last game and your 20 point deficit could be 50 points by 5pm tonight.

    Alright fellas...........

CURRENT- Mata c, Silva v......Mata starts dominates, great differential for me. Mata sits, Silva returns points as we will smash Stoke (he hopes).

OPTIONS- Mata, Michu, Walcott, Silva, Ba, RVP

Who to captain? Thanks and goodnight/morning/

      Morning.

I agree with you that Mata is likely to start or not make an appearance so Mata (c) could be a great pick. I am not sure about Silva (vc). I have Silva myself but don't see City scoring more than 2 today against a full strength Stoke defence.

I would dilute the risk of Mata (c) with the Robin Reliant (c)

excellent advice, but I will go Mata c and RVP v. IF mata starts im happy to captain him, and if he is rested, Chelsea should smash them anyhow. I hardly see him risking an injury to Mata for a 8 minute cameo at home to QPR. RVP at captain this week is far too boring. I'll take half his points and do a 'slightly large risk' captain in Mata.

Nobody really has Mata in my league unless they bring him in today, so ill take that risk.

          Good luck mate.

I am probably going to do Mata (c) and Suarez (vp). They did me proud on Day 2 last week and I am going to reward them with the band.

When does Silva ever pump out a big score?

Rare to see players go large back to back, so that rules out Walcott.

Can't compound the risk and vc Michu.

So that leaves RVP (the safe option, and the one you will probably wish you went, if you here Mata is out) or Ba (who would give you a nice differential, but where is his head at, maybe going to put on a show to get that deal done??)

I would normally be all over RVP (c) but am slightly emboldened by the success of my non RVP choice last week.

Suarez looked at his best last week, albeit against the worst side in the league, and without O'Shea, I feel sunderland could leak a few goals.
