Southampton battle for a point at St Mary’s as Theo Walcott endures a frustrating evening on his return to his former stamping ground. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Gaston Ramirez
Back in the side having been kept out of the heat of the Britannia battle, the Uruguayan fired home his third goal of the season to give the Saints the advantage. Ramirez has promised much since his arrival, without really catching fire as a Fantasy asset. With Adam Lallana seemingly sidelined for the foreseeable future, however, he looks to be a key figure in Southampton’s battle for survival and my yet draw our interest when fixtures fall kinder for Nigel Adkins’ men.

Jason Puncheon
A prime budget option, Puncheon has disappointed of late having looked to be making a mockery of his price tag. Nonetheless, the assist for tonight’s goal took him to six for the season and with two goals and a record that shows he’s started the last ten league matches, Puncheon is a reliable budget midfielder who offers attacking intent. He could yet show his worth if the Saints can improve their goal output.

The Southampton Defence
Prior to conceding three at Stoke, Nigel Adkins’ side had let in just four goals in six league outings. Tonight, the new resolute defence was again on show as Southampton worked tirelessly to stifle the Arsenal threat. Nathaniel Clyne missed out again with a knee problem but he and Jose Fonte are emerging as decent budget options in the light of the new emphasis on keeping things tight.

Going Down

Theo Walcott
While the Gunners man returned the assist for Do Prado’s own goal, Walcott suffered a miserable night back at his former club. Having seen little joy in the lone striker role, he was shifted to a wide role on the introduction of Oliver Giroud. Walcott cut a forlorn figure at the whistle and this was a far cry from the stunning display that helped see off Newcastle at the weekend.

Santi Cazorla
It’s just one assist in three matches now for the playmaker who has found himself dissolve into the background in Fantasy terms, as Walcott has come to the fore. Owners of Cazorla will surely have one eye on the double fixture in Gameweek 23 and hoping for a revival, while tonight’s showing from Walcott will perhaps do little to prompt the straight swap.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Think it was just for Stoke because he was poor in the air against Norwich, but can never be 100% sure with Mancini. Even if so, it leaves him open to future rotation.

    1) Lennon + Enrique ==> Walcott + Harte and then next week Sterling ===> Nolan

    OR

    2) Sterling + Defoe ==> Walcott + Vaz Te and then next week Enrique ===> Gibbs (annoying because I'll lose some £ on Enrique going down)

    3) Something else

Would love your thoughts on this! Want to do it tonight.

I'm considering losing Mata 'till after the DGW.
Please tell me if i'm having DGW-delusions.

    Bego - Jaask
    Clichy - Clark - Sagna - O'Brien - Shorey
    Mata - Cazorla - Walcott - Puncheon - Sterling
    RVP - Berba - Suarez

Mata -> Bale (C) this week, for a 0.2 value loss.
    Sterling/Puncheon -> Nolan for DGW23.
Then bring Mata back on WC.

Love the way there is so much hype about a 3-5-2 formation with the Jan WC.

Give it a week or two and the template will have changed again. Imo, people are under-valuing that third forward spot and, on average, at the end of every year, it's the forwards who scores the most amount of points.

If replacing Fellaini for example with Puncheon, then trying to upgrade Pog to a 3rd striker, it isn't going to be all that much more ? cba to do the maths. But when I got stuck with Pog, it was not easy to offload smoothly.

I have set myself up to have it for the month pre-wildcard.

Om the transfer page near the top. Look for Play Wildcard and hit that when you choose to make a transfer.

Also, might I say that if you do go for a 3-5-2, you're generally going to have a very cheap defence.

No, I know that it has been next to impossible to predict cleanies so you might as well go with cheap defs but surely the likes of City, Chelsea and United will start to tighten up as the season goes on.

    Just some food for thought.

3-5-2 is horrendously overrated, 7 M strikers (Berbatov, Fletcher etc.) are equally as valuable as heavy hitting midfielders.

I dont get this at all. Its a perfectly viable strategy. Michu/Fellaini were/are outscoring any other striker in their price range, and if Ba ends up leaving there arent as many striker options as there are midfielders.

Hmmm yeah but if you're playing 3-5-2, then for your theory to be true, your CHEAPEST mid needs to be about 7.5, which puts so much strain on your budget that it sucks a ton of money out of your defence and attack. If you compare that to a 3-4-3 team with a cheaptest striker like Fletcher or Berbatov [who are cheaper than Fellaini and Michu], then you can have a cheapie 5th midfielder who brings much better returns than a cheapie striker who never plays and also you have much more money left over to build a decent defence IMO.

I can have a good defence and still have a 3-5-2..Berbatov/Fletcher are only slightcheaper than Fellaini/Michu (sell price) and its not true about the cheap mids ojtscoring cheap strikers. Look at Ruiz vs Puncheon over their last few games

It's gonna be really interesting to see which one will come out on top, I just feel more secure with an extra man up front, that's the only thing

Haven't really put too much thought into it but maybe something like:

            Mig - Fed

            Zaba - Gibbs - Davies - Clyne - Cameron

            Bale - Mata - Fella - Michu - Cheap

            RVP - Ba - Berba

You need to take a hit.

Then when it says CONFIRM TRANSFERS there is CHANGE TRANSFERS to the side, and a footnote that if you press this you can activate WC.

Well I've had an awesome start to 2013. Transferred out Puncheon & Berbatov for Fellaini and C.Cole and to top it off I got stung by a blue bottle.

    sigh. Roll on 2014
