Michu climbs off the bench to net yet again for Swansea, while Kieran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski are amongst the goals for the Gunners ahead of double Gameweek 23. Daniel Sturridge is handed a role through the middle and opens his Liverpool account at Mansfield as Luis Suarez adds to his season’s tally with a somewhat dubious strike to seal their progress:

Swansea 2 Arsenal 2
Theo Walcott was shifted back to the flank for the Gunners’ trip to the Liberty, with Olivier Giroud leading the line once again – a concern for Walcott’s owners ahead of double Gameweek 23. Kieran Gibbs continued to impress in attacking terms ahead of the double; the left-back, who has produced three assists in the last four league games, grabbed the visitors’ second, with Giroud supplying the assist, while Lukas Podolski emerged from the bench to notch.

The result means that, if they win their January 16 replay with the Swans, Arsene Wenger’s side will play seven games in 21 days – hardly reassuring for Fantasy managers eyeing up Arsenal’s assets. When asked post-match if his side could cope with the upcoming fixture congestion, Wenger went on to say:

“Today we had four players at home, and I didn’t bring on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Francis Coquelin or Tomas Rosicky. Abou Diaby is coming back and if we find one or two on the transfer market, then why not.”

The Arsenal boss also took time to comment on Giroud and Gibbs. Wenger was full of praise for the left-back, who continues to look an assured starter in the XI:

“Kieran Gibbs had an outstanding game. He gets better and better. When you see this kind of game, it’s very positive.”

Giroud, apparently, had an issue with his knee, though his manager alleviated any fears by confirming:

“He has a big scar but I think he should be okay now.”

Michael Laudrup made four changes from the side that drew against Villa last midweek, with Danny Graham leading the line again, as Michu dropped to the bench. Graham vindicated his manager’s decision by notching his third goal in as many games and also supplied the assist for Michu’s goal, after the Spaniard notched within two minutes of climbing off the bench.

Similar to Arsenal, Swansea face a packed schedule over the next few weeks. With Capital One Cup semi-final duties to consider, Laudrup’s side could face eight games in the next 24 days if they win their replay – while rest and rotation will undoubtedly play a part, the Dane revealed Michu’s exclusion from yesterday’s starting line-up was more of a fitness issue – something of a worry, given the upcoming run of fixtures:

“He wasn’t 100 per cent. He picked up an ankle injury in the game against Reading and he also had a slight back problem.”

Mansfield 1 Liverpool 2
Brendan Rodgers made numerous alterations to his first XI for yesterday’s clash. Daniel Sturridge was handed his debut through the centre, with Stewart Downing once again starting for the Reds – Steven Gerrard was omitted from the squad altogether, while Raheem Sterling and Luis Suarez were named on the bench. Sturridge made an instant impact by notching the opener, courtesy of a Jonjo Shelvey assist, before making way for Suarez on 55 minutes. The Uruguayan grabbed a controversial second to secure his side’s progress and while Rodgers spent time downplaying Suarez’s handball in the lead up to the goal, his post-match thoughts were also focussed on Sturridge’s contribution:

“I thought he was excellent. He’s nowhere near fit yet, he’s come in off the back of an injury and hasn’t done a lot of training. I think you saw in that cameo today of 55 minutes his pace, his power and he scored a good goal. He probably could have had three goals. It was a good introduction for him, a tough one because Mansfield were very committed. He got his goal and that will give him confidence – he’ll look to keep scoring.”

It’s worth noting that the arrival of Sturridge has done little to quell Fantasy interest interest in Luis Suarez. Sturridge has seen roughly 10% of the transfers in that have gone the way of Suarez with the Uruguayan enjoying over 100,000 transfers in so far in the Gameweek. Rodgers brought us this on his new strike partnership, post-match…

“They can play together, there’s no problem with that. Obviously we want to fit in good players and that’s the most important thing, to keep the squad strong and build up a competitive group. They are both wonderful players, they have both got different strengths but the idea was bringing in players that are multifunctional and can play in a couple of positions and that is what Luis has shown he can do and Daniel also. They are both tactically strong, flexible in their play.”

Looks ok to cover the next 2 GW's but I would advise that you have escape routes mapped out for Santi (Or Theo) and Azpi. Santi>Bale and Azpi>Zaba after GW23 (saving a FT along the way) might be the way to go. Also prefer Davies over Shaw as a budget pick personally, can't see Soton defence getting anything much in the DGW (potential for minus figures at the Bridge!)

Got lost on a previous post....but worth considering again for those wildcarding this week.

For those wildcarding this week it is worth noting that from Gameweek 24 the following have great fixtures for the next six week span of fixtures.
    Man U
    Swa
    Sun
    MCI
    STO
    ARS
    CHE
    NOR
So if wildcarding and loading with che and arsenal players now that’s pretty good, but beware of loading up on West Ham or Southampton as you may be missing out on other options. Norwich, Stoke, Swansea and Sunderland could all be great places to find long term bargains.
Here’s who I’d recommend getting in/keeping in a wildcard team to ensure it lasts beyond gwk 23
    Man U – RVP – def …probably Rafael
Swa – Michu – Ben Davies
Sun Fletcher – Cuellar (check fitness)
    MCI – Tevez – Zab
    STO Beg Shawcross (bonus magnet)
    ARS – Walcott – Gibbs
    CHE – Mata – Luiz
    NOR – Snodgrass/Pilkington

I'm thinking long term. Luiz can play mid and defence. When Terry is back such versatility gives him the edge. He also takes free kicks and penalties when Lampard and Hazard aren't around.

Not sure Verm is worth the extra money. Gibbs is a steal if he keeps this form up.

The fixtures are mixed...especially if you look 8 games ahead. But agree Fellaini is a season keeper. Really not convinced by baines's value. Think its better to go for a couple of Che/Ars/Man as your strong defenders. Shawcross also looks a must. Can't see how Baines fits into that sort of planning.

Rafael's versatility again shines through. can play rb and rmid in some games. His assist threat is also a key factor. Feel with Vidic and Ferdinand Evans may be dropped occasionally. But what the hey...rotation effects all big teams and yes he's still a good pick if you can handle him missing the odd game.

No, I've got Walcott, Mata, Gibbs already as well as Clyne and Obrien should they be fit. I'll probably get A chelsea defender in maybe a west ham attacker for a hit then wildcard to clear up the mess afterwards. Gameweek 24 is penciled in but I'll see how injuries go.

If I wildcard now I'll have major bench problems....no way are the likes of RVP, Michu being benched.

This is really helpful, thanks Jonty. Looking to play my WC in GW24 and going by this advice it appears we are spoilt for choice where our defence is concerned. It's consistently been the area that I have struggled with most in recent years. I was thinking Zaba and Luiz as my two big hitters, but this info certainly brings Rafael back in to play! I fear the ship has already sailed where Gibbs is concerned.

Just a reminder of those debating Mata or Hazard - I recall a tale of woe from earlier in the season which I presume affected a few others on here,
Yea I had mata back then starting off , And as we all know Hazard went on a spree ( which couldn't last lol ) and by the time I changed it around – then Mata took off and by the time I got Mata back in rafa was appointed and he dropped Mata !!!
I then went Mata > bale outta sheer frustration that night and Bale did a hammy 🙁 meantime Mata goes on a spree and I catch him on tail end again and the only bit of luck is 1/2 on here convinced me to keep mata ( dgw wasnt announced ) against knee-jerking to Walcott !

Is it worth having Bale in my WC team just for QPR then spending 4 points to get Walcott back in or should I ignore the temptation and just keep Walcott for the City game. Reason it would cost 4 points is I want to do Ba > Tevez GW23. Other option is to have Tevez in my WC team over Ba so I can have Bale for QPR then Walcott for the double without a hit?

I agree. Stoke is the kind of game they will want Ba to play but I am not convinced he will get any time vs Southampton. Ba will be caught up in rotation soon enough, even if he plays these games and that will be very annoying when it happens.

Yep, prefer two Chelsea attacking mids for the DGW and RVP, Aguero and Berb up top. Gotta keep the long game in mind. Rafa luuuurrrvvves Torres and won't freeze him out.

Turnbull or Azpi for the DGW (have Ba & Mata already and going to WC)

    A or B?

    A) Turnbull = guaranteed time
    B) Azpi = better in the long-run

You're going to have to waste a transfer to get rid of Turnbull, unless you're happy to just go with one playing keeper. In that case, get Turnbull.

anyone consider getting a 3.9 gk and a decent one to free up some funds?
find it really frustrating when I have a gk on my bench with 7+ points, this way i wouldn't have that problem

Would really appreciate some opinions on my team

    Bunn (Szch)
    Azip/Gibbs/Shaw (Demel/Harte)
    Bale/Mata/Michu/Felliani/Punch
    Ba/RVP (Dzeko)

2.2 in the bank, next week will transfer one of Felliani or Bale to Walcott

Once these DGWs are over, what do you think of Jussi and Bunn for goal keepers?

Or should I just cut my losses and get Begovic in?

    Currently have Jussi and Turnbull.

I have Jussi but am Wcing and would really like to downgrade him to Bunn to free up funds (my other keeper is Begovic and I also have Demel). It seems a shame to get rid of a DGW player but I don't really see West Ham keeping a cleanie against Arsenal anyway. Thoughts?

Therein lies the dilemma of playing an early WC. Could you not plan to keep Jussi for the DGW and transfer out for Bunn in GW24?
