Back after a two-month hiatus, our thoughts turn to European action this midweek with many of us looking to quickly draw a line under last night’s events at Anfield. The Champions League affords us the perfect distraction and with the first leg of the last 16 just a few hours away, we reacquaint ourselves with its workings once again:

Scout League Standings

Obviously, at this stage we’re unable to have a look at each player’s new team, so for now we’re simply giving a shut out to the top five contenders in the Fantasy Football Scout league. In top spot sits Melonfresh – he accrued 427 points over the group stages, which is 25th spot in the overall standings and 32 points off the summit.

In second is Russ Kitson. He is just five points behind our Scout League leader and is in 39th position overall, with 422 points to his name so far. JDB is in third with 415 points, Tricky2006 makes fourth spot with 411 points, while we have a tie for fifth position, with Shindokung and Ion4ef both racking up 405 points after the opening six rounds.

Market Trends

As squads are reassembled, faith in Borussia Dortmund seems to be on the up. The Bundesliga outfit square up to Shakhtar Donetsk this time round and right across the classifications, they have received significant investment; Roman Weidenfeller has earned 8,000 new owners in goal, while Mats Hummels, Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski have all picked up plenty more, with Reus the most popular Dortmund player since the last round of matches – over 17,000 have snapped him up.

Juventus have also proven popular ahead of their showdown with Glasgow Celtic. Gianluigi Buffon, Leonardo Bonucci, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo have all acquired many new owners – Vidal’s classification as a defender, allied with his spot-kick duties, have made him the number one target heading into the knockouts, with over 27,000 picking up the Chilean international.

PSG are another team with many new backers. Salvatore Sirigu and Thiago Silva have earned over 10,000 extra owners in goal and defence respectively, while Jeremy Menez (8,000) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (12,000) have made their way onto radars prior to their double-header with Valencia.

Porto pair of matches with Malaga seems to have divided opinion, though. While the likes of keeper Helton (13,000) , midfielder Lucho Gonzalez (14,000) and forward Jackson Martinez (5,000) have been snapped up for the Portuguese side, Malaga trio Martin Demichelis (9,000), Eliseu (10,000) and Isco (7,000) have all proven popular picks.

Ones to Watch

With the first round of the last 16 taking place over four evenings, Fantasy managers need to factor in a little extra balance to their squads, as we are afforded the chance of changing captaincy from one night to the next – a similar scenario to the recent Euro 2012 tournament, where the “stick or twist” dilemma was a crucial aspect of the game. This tactic plays a major part in our selections:

Arturo Vidal comes into consideration as Juventus make their way to Celtic Park. With three goals, an assist and a couple of clean sheets already accrued, Vidal’s explosive armband capabilities were highlighted in Matchday 5 with a 15 point return against Chelsea. A clean sheet and the possibility of attacking points makes the Chilean a real bargain at 5.5.

With tomorrow’s Shakhtar v Dortmund tie looking too close to call, we turn to the Bernabeu for alternatives. A home clash with former club United hands centre stage to Cristiano Ronaldo and, having warmed up with a weekend hat-trick, he looks primed to produce as Jose Mourinho looks to take an advantage to Old Trafford in three weeks’ time.

We’re opting for a couple of options from next Tuesday’s matches as armband alternatives. Porto’s home form across the group stages was key to their qualification. The Portuguese side won all three matches in front of their own fans and they’ll fancy their chances of maintaining that run of form when Malaga roll up in a week’s time. With that in mind, Lucho Gonzalez gets the nod. The top scoring Fantasy midfielder thus far, the 6.5 priced Argentine has racked up 38 points and has scored or assisted in each of his last two home matches.

A home clash with in-form Bayern is far from straightforward but with just 3% ownership and a price tag of 8.0, Theo Walcott could prove a real differential option against the Bundesliga giants. Goals look likely in this one and if Walcott can replicate his recent domestic form, Arsenal could position themselves in the driving seat before a difficult return leg in the Allianz Arena.

While Galatasaray have opted to add a couple of big-name players to their ranks ahead of a head-to-head with Schalke, we’re choosing to overlook Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba and instead keep faith in their in-form front man Boruk Yilmaz. Less of a flair pick than either of the above, he’s been banging in the goals and, at 6.5, looks a strong captaincy option in the mid-price bracket, with Barcelona facing a tricky trip to AC Milan in the evening’s other match.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Guys I have 4 DGW players in Gerrard, Sturridge, Enrique and Davies.

and Demel, who may not start of Joe O'brien is fit..
and JCole, who is getting rotated every alternate games..

I am doing Gerrard> Sissoko.. = 9 players + Demel and Joe Cole..
Will this be enough or Do I have to take a hit to field a strong XI??

    Suggestions please..

Made a team for another CL fantasy game that's starting today. Your budget is very poor and players like Messi and CR7 cost 1/5 of your total budget. So I made this team:

    Sirigu
    Bonucci - Barzagli - Dante
    Mkhitaryan - Blazczykowski - Vidal - Isco - Alaba
    Yilmaz - Martinez

Does it look ok? Are the players nailed on?

I just glanced over all of the UCL options and ended up with a few nice budget options...

    Keepers:

Lopez (REA) 4.5 - Up against Utd, but is still magnificent value. Real should tighten up with Pepe back in the mix.

Forster (CEL) 4.0 - The giant-killers are up against Juve, a team not exactly known for scoring for fun. I fancy Celtic to continue their stubbornness and Forster to rack up the saves.

Weidenfeller (BOR) 5.0 - Dortmund have not shown the same league-form as past seasons, but in UCL they have been outstanding. With both Subotic and Schmelzer recovering from injuries, I fancy them to tighten up and send Shakhtar (without Willian) packing.

    Defenders:

Lichtsteiner (JUV) 4.5 - Amazing price for a more or less OOP player with good offensive threat. Up against Celtic, he should be able to do some damage. (A cheaper alternative to Vidal, who in my opinion is the best value player out there. If you cannot afford Vidal, Lichtsteiner is your man.)

Ricardo Costa (VAL) 4.5 - Tough clash with PSG, but Valencia are usually solid in Europe and combined with the fact that the frenchmen have a tendency to struggle for goals, he could prove excellent value.

Mangala (POR) 4.0 - Porto are extremely tight defensively and up against Malaga. I fancy at least one cleanie over the two fixtures. 4.0 is insane value for a player in one of the most well-organized teams out there.

Nounkeu (GAL) 4.0 - Gatasaray could surprise alot of people this year. Bolstering their squad and up against a Schalke side which have looked woeful as of late. 4.0 is a bargain for a player in a team that could cause upsets.

    Midfielders:

Alaba (BAY) 5.5 - Reverse OOP or not, this kid is a beast. On pens and freshly off a brace at the weekend, I fancy him to cause Arsenal all kind of trouble. Their defensive shambles only makes his case stronger.

Feghouli (VAL) 5.5 - The Algerian has been a sensation in this years UCL, sitting 2nd among the midfielders. No reason for why his run would stop now.

Kroos (BAY) 6.5 - This kid caught my attention last year, and has developed into a class act. The only thing denting his potential is if Martinez is moved down to CB, which could force him to play DM along with Schweinsteiger.

Lucho (POR) 6.5 - Currently top-scorer among all midfielders, the Argentine playmaker proves fantastic value. On set pieces and with an eye for goal, few can overlook this maestro from now on in.

    Strikers:

Yilmaz (GAL) 6.5 - Burak Yilmaz has been on a tear lately, and up against a Schalke side on the down, I expect big things. Definitely one to consider along with your two heavy hitters.

Jackson Martinez (POR) 6.0 - Porto just keep producing top strikers, and Martinez has followed in Falcaos footsteps and cemented his role as the teams new main man. I fancy him to cause Malaga all kinds of trouble.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (SHA) 5.5 - Starting off with a bang, Mkhitaryan has not produced a single attacking point since his brace against Nordsjaelland. Still, his domestic form has not slip and I think this just might be the time for the young Armenian to explode again.

    United's squad travelling to Madrid:
De Gea, Lindegaard; Büttner, Evans, Evra, Ferdinand, Jones, Rafael, Smalling, Vidic; Anderson, Carrick, Cleverley, Giggs, Nani, Valencia, Young; Hernandez, Kagawa, Rooney, van Persie, Welbeck.

Shocked to see no Paul Scholes in there. I assume he is injured? Let's win this boys. Let's bring the trophy home. Come on United.

Yeah he is a very mobile player and will sit in front of Izaguirre imo. Both are full backs mainly and good in defence and going forward so it will be effective in limiting Juventus down their right flank while providing a good outlet on the counter.

So after the Sturridge incident crashed the site... With Liverpool now realistically only challenging for the Europa league with 3 matches coming up in the space of a week and last nights game making it 4 in 11 days, is there any possibility Suarez will be rested for Sundays game with Swansea, with priority now challenging for Europes 2nd trophy!

I predict another crash of the website on Sunday 2.10.

Fingers crossed for the abuse giving to all us Sturridge (c) victims! Hopefully to top it off Sturridge scores a 2 and picks up all 3 BP....

When selecting UCL fantasy goalkeepers, remember not to have two that play on the same evening.

Otherwise you can't drop your first choice for another chance at a clean sheet.

    Quick question regarding UCL

Is Each day counted as 1 GW?
So tomorrow is another GW? and I can do 1 transfer as well as captain and subs choices?

12-20th all one "GW", but you can do three sets of subs/(c) changes in between.

No. This week and next week are same GW. Put tonight's players in your team tonight and try putting players from last game next week on bench so you can do managers subs.

Hey guys -- never played UCL before but figure I'd give it a try. After scrolling through this page, are these the big strategic considerations?

-- Captain can change every matchday
    -- Rotate goalkeepers
-- One FT every match day

If there is a link to read I will stop with the questions, but just wanted to know if there was anything else major. Weird to have Messi, Ronaldo, and Ibra in the same team...

    Thanks.

Thanks -- the only other consideration is if I need to spread out players by match day. Just trying to figure out what my lineup would look like for 12/13/19/20
          Forster
          Mangala/Lahm/Jordi/Vidal
          Santi/Asamoah/Schweinsteiger/Lucho
          Ronaldo/Ibra/Messi
Messi, Unnerstall, and either DeMichelis or Fuchs can then be subbed in?

Max of three subs AND three captain changes each, or a combination of three subs/cap?

            - they can be subbed as long as the player you want to take out has not seen a red card.

-yes you can do a max of 4 subs since that's how many you can have on your bench and 3 capt changes since there are 4 matchdays

      Ibra, Reus and Vidal/Alba maybe.

Suppose you've got to concentrate on teams you think'll go through if it's a draft.

PS. Done you a favour in our Europa League Group this week! How's your tie with Granville going?

Not short on players this week so which do you prefer:
    A) Suarez + GJ > Rooney + Evans (-4)
    B) Suarez > Lukaku (and enough cash to swim in/get RVP back post Real 2nd leg)
