There are some big names to aim for in the Second Round of the FFS Members Cup. Site regulars such as Evs – who sits sixth in the FFS Members League – and Jonah, who is sixth overall, are both through to the final 256, while The Tinkerman will be hoping to replicate his 124 point haul from the previous round.

Some of the old school posters also stand out – Pompeyfan, Dribbler, Rasping Drive and Denial have all been around these parts for quite some time. Doosra is in there, too – whether he has Jonty’s dog with him is maybe a matter for another day.

    Ddg
    Harte cueller onouha GJ (davies)
    Fellaini Walcott bale Maloney (michu)
    Rvp Suarez (sturridge)

    A: suarez >> augero
B: GJ + suarez >> santon/sagna/wilson + augero for a 2 point hit (will allow me to field 11 players)
    C; GJ + suarez >> baines + giroud for a 2 point hit

    dilemma’s:
    - I need to bring in a defender to play for me this week and next gw as it will allow me to save an FT
    - I am leading my monthly ML by 15 points so making an extra emphasis to do well this gw
    - I like C but both ars and eve have a blank in gw 29 but if i save my FT next gw, i will have 2FT in gw29
    - Not sure which striker to get…my other strikers are rvp and sturridge

B with either snaton or wilson.

B over A because extra player will regain 2 points for playing +extra points CS etc.

Not C because you will be getting in 2 players with GW29 blanks causing you problems in a couple of weeks.

Re possession football - agree totally with LR's comment.
Football is about creating chances and converting them (sorry for stating the obvious). The key therefore is for each possession to result in one (or more) chances. The length of the possession is irrelevant.
The one aspect where possession can be important is in wearing down the opposition - I think it's true to say that defending is more fatiguing than being in possession. In principle that should be reflected in possession-style teams scoring more late in games, but not sure if that's true or even been studied.

One of the many coaches he anaylses is Graham taylor who most will remember for direct long ball football. I used to get really annoyed that England would even boot the ball straight out from kickoff. The reason for this is based on a great deal of analysis at the time that most goals were scored from very few passes and/or stealing possession in the opposition half. The strategy was therefore to give them the ball near their own penalty area and then press heavily.

Nice to get an explanation for such a depressing time as an England fan!

There will be some kind of formula in there, such as possession x penetration = goal threat.

I think that Swansea of last season (and this season) and Liverpool at home this season have seen such good defensive returns because (and this is another obvious statement), teams can't score when they don't have possession.

Yes yes, but Barcelona's possession style of football has proven to be successful time and time again. Does it work every time? No. But then again, no 'style' does. I have been watching Barcelona for a long (long!) time and I can't remember the last time we didn't have a shot on goal. I wouldn't read too much into it. It was an off night.

Your weakness is against teams that can sit deep and counter down the wings. But every tactic/formation has a weakness

Yes, although Chelsea (the last two times we've played them) was different because we created plenty of chances, just failed to score. Even missed a penalty, etc. Milan were just very, very solid so we didn't even create chances.

Presumably because they convert possession into chances, and prevent the opposition from doing the same. It's not just about your team's possession but preventing the opposition being productive with theirs.

I agree. Having possession should lead to more chances, especially if you have the right players, and it doesn't allow the opposition to create chances.

Fair point. If Stoke passed the ball 900 times a game and had Peter Crouch at the end of it all, it probably wouldn't pan out as well as when you have Stoichkov, Romario, Ronaldo, Kluivert, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Messi, Villa 😉

All systems have flaws as others have pointed out. Direct counter attacking football is flawed against teams that sit deep and don't commit numbers forward.

Quality of players and fitness will make a difference but these margins are alot more narrow than before so the ability to play a number of styles and adapt to the opposition is really the only obvious innovation left.

I would go further with this statement. If teams that can't control the ball try to play the possession game, they lose possession long before they had a chance on goal - better to punt it into the area and have a go if you can't keep possession.

Very true, you need technical players who are comfortable on the ball. Again this is where England fall down, our best chance is to play direct football as only Wishere is remotely capable of taking more than a couple of touches before panicking and giving the ball away.

Pressing is genuinely one of the most significant innovations in modern football, Arrigo Sacchi at Milan was the main pioneer.

            It's a formula.
I make the attack (a % of goals, % of last 6 games goal, %H/A goals) versus the defense (a % of goals conceded, % of last 6 goal conceded, %H/A goals) of the other team.
Some other statistical data enter in my formula, like the % of clean sheets, and % of making goals in a game.

    My defense

    Zabaleta , Reid,Sagna.Demel,Davies

Now I need to play 4 defenders to field 11.

Only one among Demel & Reid will play. Davies out

So basically I am two short of 11 now. Have 1 FT... should I take a hit to bring someone in ?
I'll be bringing in Johny Evans for Sagna as the FT

I wouldn't take a hit on a defender unless you need the cash for another transfer. Even if they keep a clean sheet you are still only 2 points better off.

Pick 1 to replace Sagna for a hit:-

    A) Azpi - city away this week
    B) Evans - potential rest at home to norwich
    C) Debuchy - good fixtures but not defensively reliant
    D) Olsson - decent fixtures
    E) Nastasic - not nailed on and potential gw29 blank

    THE GK CONUNDRUM
Many times this season I have selected the wrong goalkeeper leaving points (often important ones) alongside nasri on the bench.
Through at least five minutes of research, I can conclude- if in doubt pick the home goalkeeper- ground breaking stuff I know.
For example- all of reading's 3 CSs have been at the majeski, while 2/3 of mignolet's 9 have been at the SoL.

Please forgive the fact is sound like that helpful duck, and try not to be too shocked as you read this highly shocking development

    Hamburg SV CL presser.

Herr Vets dared to enter the press room after last week’s humiliating CL defeat by Stade Rennes. He did not appear happy despite being 2nd in the Bundesliga. He spoke:

“Fick Englisch sprechen. Was zur Hölle ist das? Wir spielten Stade Rennes letzte Woche und wir spielen sie wieder in dieser Woche? Das ist Schwachsinn. Wir werden die schmutzige kleine fickers sowieso schlagen. Oh, und warum sind wir das letzte Mal in der Liga, wenn Octopus eine schlechtere Tordifferenz hat? Ficken Amateure! "

    He then turned and left.

Aargh, brought in Rooney and now I find he won't be playing! So in order to have 11 the only sensible move is now to immediately transfer him out for a hit (sick), because I already have 5 playing midfielders... but who to bring in? I already have Kun.

Arsenal's last two performances has really motivated me to keep Walcott as captain... Yes it can be argued equally that because they've been so poor captaining Walcott would be a huge risk.

But my thinking is this: if Wenger gets one more bad result, its bye bye. Fans will be unhappy to a new extreme, so he needs to pull something out of the hat pretty soon... hopefully the same Villa side that played Chelsea turns up...
