Luis Suarez fires a hat-trick as Liverpool ease to victory at Wigan. Marouane Fellaini produces another double figure haul as Everton get the better of Reading, Juan Mata’s home form continues to concern, Shinji Kagawa scores three as United batter Norwich at Old Trafford, Adel Taarabt is dropped from the QPR starting XI, while Dimitar Berbatov and Stephane Sessegnon are amongst the goals again as Sunderland and Fulham share the points at the Stadium of Light.

Suarez Runs Riot at the DW
With Daniel Sturridge failing to recover from a knock, Luis Suarez was handed the chance to lead the line again as Liverpool moved back to a 4-3-3 for the trip to Wigan. The Uruguayan picked up from where he left off against Swansea last time out with a superbly taken hat-trick at the DW and has now moved ahead of Robin Van Persie in the race for the Golden Boot, with 21 goals so far this season – he is now just one strike away from doubling his tally for the previous campaign. With a superb run of fixtures to follow, Suarez’s owners will be confident of further hauls as he squares up to the likes of Southampton, Villa, West Ham and Reading in the next five. Factor in a lack of European football and no FA Cup fixtures to worry about and his game time looks far more assured than any other big hitting forward from here on in. Another issue to consider here in Sturridge’s fitness. There has been plenty of debate on the Suarez v Sturridge issue, with many opting for the latter due to price but he has now missed two of the last three now, with his propensity to pick up knocks a definite concern. With Rodgers clearly unwilling to take any risks, Suarez could well find himself leading the line once again if the former Chelsea man continues to be troubled with what appears to be an ongoing thigh problem.

Coutinho Impresses Again
While Suarez hogged the headlines, the performance of Philippe Coutinho offered further encouragement and will have attracted some interest from Fantasy managers. Given the freedom to wander in the 4-3-3 to link attack and midfield, the young Brazilian was hugely effective, providing two assists on the day as Wigan struggled to contain his intelligent runs and close control. Coutinho has returned in both his starts and, although he’s yet to get near to completing 90 minutes in the league, his 6.5 price tag in midfield will perhaps start to earn him interest if we get further assurance that Brendan Rodgers is putting faith in his recent acquisition.

Fellaini Returns to Form
He only had “a chance” of recovering from the foot problem that kept him out of last Tuesday’s FA Cup win over Oldham, according to David Moyes’ Friday afternoon press conference. Not only did Fellaini shrug off the injury, he racked up the Fantasy points once again as the Toffees returned to winning ways. Sold by 60,000 Fantasy managers ahead of yesterday morning’s deadline, the Belgian welcomed Reading to Goodison in poor form, having scored in just one of his previous nine appearances – a goal and assist helped him deliver a 10 point pre-bonus haul; his seventh set of double figures this season. His 32% owners now have a dilemma, though; Moyes’ men are without a league fixture next weekend and then square up to City and Spurs in the following three – despite his flourishing form, we could well see an exodus as Fantasy managers look for alternative midfield coverage for the six fixtures currently scheduled for Gameweek 29. There is no shortage of options.

Jagielka Blow for Moyes
David Moyes confirmed post-match that Phil Jagielka would be forced to undergo surgery to repair the gash suffered to his ankle in the challenge with Adam Le Fondre. Jagielka was forced off after just five minutes of the 3-1 win, with Moyes admitting that he was now unlikely to be available for the FA Cup Quarter Final with Wigan…

“[It will be] a couple of weeks maybe. Normally if you get a cut around the ankle it’s that because it’s an area where you kick the ball. It’s not something [that heals quickly]. It’s a real, real blow to us.”

Everton are next in league action on March 16 when they entertain Man City at Goodison. Having kept just four clean sheets all season, Moyes will be anxious to see the former Sheffield United man restored to his lineup with some haste. While he’s owned by under 8% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, in the Sky Sports Game, Jagielka is owned by over 23% of managers.

Mata Home Concerns
While Demba Ba saved Chelsea’s blushes with the only goal of the game against West Brom, Juan Mata once again struggled to produce in front of his own fans. The Spaniard had started just four of the previous seven home games under Rafa Benitez but returned to the first XI, having been rested for the midweek FA Cup won over Middlesbrough. His failure to pick up the points means he has now returned just one goal and a single assist in eight Stamford Bridge appearances since the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo – indeed, all six of his double figure returns have arrived on the road this term. With a blank next weekend, he then has three home fixtures (WHM, SUN, TOT) in the next four to remedy his current poor performances in front of the Chelsea faithful.

Rafa’s Defence Remains In Flux
Benitez again shuffled his pack at the back, resting both John Terry and Gary Cahill to the bench to start David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic at centre-backs, with César Azpilicueta recalled at right-back. Cahill had previously started the last six league outings, while Azpilicueta had sat out two of the last three. Clearly there is little hope of Fantasy managers getting assured consistency here, with Ashley Cole and Petr Cech looking the most certain starters, mirroring the situation at United where David De Gea and Patrice Evra are offering the security of starts. David Luiz remains a worthy punt due to his versatility – he has started two of the last three, playing in central midfield in Gameweek 26. Despite a role at centre-back, Luiz was present on direct free-kicks and justified his selection in the Scout Picks with the assist for Ba’s winner.

Van Persie Overshadowed
With many expecting major changes for United ahead of Tuesday’s game with Real Madrid, most of the focus was on Robin Van Persie after the line-ups were announced earlier in the afternoon. Instead, it was Shinji Kagawa who hogged the headlines with a match-winning performance as the league leaders moved 15 points clear at the top. The summer signing from Dortmund had failed to play a single minute in any of the previous three Gameweeks but was handed a role on the left and produced a stunning hat-trick for an 18 point, pre-bonus FPL haul – post-match, he was the main subject of Sir Alex Ferguson’s praise:

“He’s a good finisher, the lad. His second and third goals were terrific and he showed great intelligence for the first one and composure. He’s gradually getting his form back because he missed that period of football in October and November which set him back a little bit. He’s going to be a good player. Next year he’ll be far, far better too.”

Wayne Rooney also played a part, fetching a goal and pair of assists for a 12 point haul, while Van Persie had to make do with a single assist. The Dutchman has now scored just once on his last five fixtures – a real slump in Fantasy returns, considering he had notched six times in the previous five by comparison. Indeed, when starting together, Rooney has produced six sets of double figures to Van Persie’s four, a clear sign of his explosive captaincy potential.

Redknapp Drops Taarabt
A kind run of fixtures looked to have afforded Adel Taarabt a platform to produce but the Moroccan warmed the bench as QPR registered their first win in seven attempts. Taarabt started every match for the R’s from Gameweek 7 onwards and looked a pivotal figure in their quest for survival bur Harry Redknapp’s decision to field Junior Hoilett on the left instead paid off handsomely as the former Blackburn man chipped in with an assist. Loic Remy’s return to the starting XI also had an immediate effect – the Frenchman notched the opener and has now scored in two of his three starts since moving to London in January. With Sunderland, Wigan and Stoke all arriving at Loftus Road in the next six, in addition to trips to Villa and Fulham, Remy could be set for renewed investment. While Taarabt’s 5% FPL owners fret over his game time, Julio Cesar’s also have concerns after the Brazilian was subbed off with a dead leg with 15 minutes remaining.

Stoke’s Defensive Woes Continue
A home clash against a West Ham side with just eight goals to their name on the road seemed the perfect tonic for Tony Pulis’ side as they looked to address a run of nine games without a clean sheet. With Robert Huth suspended, Marc Wilson shifted to centre-half as Andy Wilkinson earned a recall at left-back and, with Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble both missing out for the visitors, hopes were high of nullifying the Hammers’ threat. Once again, though, Pulis’ side were undone as Jack Collison struck in a 1-0 win – while the upcoming Gameweek 29 schedule is likely to see us prioritise other transfers, the Stoke defence looks set to see further transfers out over the next few Gameweeks. Asmir Begovic and Shawcross, at 5.8 and 5.9 in FPL respectively, are simply a liability right now, with Pulis’ side looking unable to shake off their lethargy as they slide down the table.

Sessegnon Flourishing on the Flank
Shifted to the right wing as Martin O’Neill turns to a 4-4-2 formation in order to boost Sunderland’s goal threat, Stephane Sessegnon was again amongst the goals in yesterday’s home draw with Fulham. It’s somewhat ironic that, having struggled in the role in “the hole” behind Steven Fletcher, the Benin international is finally producing from out wide – he also grabbed a goal at West Brom last week. Certainly, our faith was obvious heading into the weekend – we’d rolled out a Watchlist piece and handed Sessegnon a place on the Scout Picks bench on Friday evening and with a trip to QPR and home clash with Norwich to follow, the 6.9 priced midfielder continues to look a decent short-term option.

Berbatov Shows Consistency
The Bulgarian stole the show in midweek as Fulham’s version of the Harlem Shake went viral but he’s proving pretty handy on the pitch once again. Surprisingly, yesterday’s strike at Sunderland meant Berbatov has found the net in back-to-back Gameweeks for the first time this season – indeed, he has now scored in three of his last five appearances and is starting to look a real mid-price option up front once again. Sascha Riether added to his assist last time out with a goal against the Black Cats and bearing in mind John Arne Riise hasn’t scored or assisted since Gameweek 8, the former is currently looking the most enticing rout into Martin Jol’s backline. With no fixture next weekend, any investment will obviously be put on hold but with QPR and Villa in their next four, Berbatov and Riether could be crucial for the Cottagers.

Jupp Heynckes rotates for what should be an easy fixture away at strugglers TSG Hoffenheim:

Bayern Munich: Starke - Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba - Martínez, Schweinsteiger - Müller, Shaqiri, Ribéry - Gómez.

Would seem to reinforce Mandžukić as the number one striker.

Yes, I rate Kagawa very highly. Thought it might take him a bit of time to settle in the Premier League, even without an injury, but his movement and anticipation are exemplary. Interesting to observe his development next season at Old Trafford.

With City and Wigan both having their FA Cup game on Saturday. It should open Tuesday or Wednesday as options for their prem game?
City are then away to Everton for the lunchtime kick off on Saturday.

Who do you reckon is the best Liverpool to bring in after Suarez and Enrique?

Is Enrique AND Johnson too much, taking into account their nice games over GW30,31,32 and 33? The other would be Gerrard.

Thought i’d make a post about the relegation run-in and try to assess the options that could be good, taking into account fixtures too. So for the purpose of this post, i’ll assume; QPR, Reading, Villa, Wigan and Southampton are teams involved in this relegation dog fight. Newcastle and Sunderland should be okay now on 30+ points.. i can’t see them being dragged into it, especially the former.
    Fixtures FROM GW 30 ONWARDS:-
QPR= villa, fulham, WIGAN, everton, STOKE, reading, ARSENAL, NEWCASTLE, liverpool
Reading= man utd, arsenal, SOUTHAMPTON, LIVERPOOL, norwich, QPR, fulham, MANCITY, west ham
Villa= QPR, LIVERPOOL, stoke, FULHAM, man utd, SUNDERLAND, norwich, CHELSEA, wigan
Wigan= NEWCASTLE, NORWICH, qpr, SWANSEA, west ham, SPURS, west brom, arsenal, VILLA
Southampton= LIVERPOOL, CHELSEA, reading, WEST HAM, swansea, WEST BROM, spurs, sunderland, STOKE
Rating the fixtures from an attacking/defensive point of view (1st = best, 5th = worst)
    1- Wigan
    2- QPR
    3- Southampton
    4- Aston Villa
    5- Reading
    A few defensive rotations:
    QPR and Villa, giving:
QPR, fulham, WIGAN, FULHAM, STOKE, SUNDERLAND, norwich, NEWCASTLE, wigan.
    Reading and Wigan giving:
NEWCASTLE, NORWICH, Southampton, SWANSEA, west ham, QPR, fulham, arsenal, VILLA
    Wigan and Southampton giving:
NEWCASTLE, NORWICH, reading, WEST HAM, west ham, WEST BROM, west brom, sunderland, VILLA
Now looking at the players and teams that could be worth investing in, assuming you don’t have them already.
    WIGAN:
I really think they could prove to be astute purchases for the run-in. Unlike the other 4 teams, they’re still in the FA cup and have atleast 1 guaranteed DGW due to no GW29 fixture.
    GK and Defence:
Al Habsi is too dear at 5m. Maybe if he was 4.5m it could be worth it, due to Wigan’s propensity to give away pens, and his propensity to save a fair few of them.
Alcaraz is an interesting option having just come back from a long injury lay off. Similar goal threat to Caldwell. Being 4.2m makes him the better option of the two. Boyce for me is too dear @ 4.7 when you compare to Figueroa aswell. He’s got the best assist potential, due to being a Wing back, and the other 3 CB’s. In conclusion, i’d go for the cheapest one so it would be Alcaraz here. Should be nailed on now as he continues to gain match fitness, and his experience could be vital. Prefer his goal threat from corners, to Figuero’s shooting from long range aswell.
    Wigan’s likely 1st choice defence: Al habsi/Boyce-Figueroa-Caldwell-Alcaraz-Beausejour
You can read Roberto Martinez waxing lyrical about Alcaraz here: http://www.wigantoday.net/spor.....witterfeed
    Mid/Attack:
I can only see 3 options worth investing here, pretty obvious i guess. Maloney, Beausejour and Kone. Maloney is central to Wigan’s attack and has set pieces/pens in his locker. Known to be injury prone but recently he’s been playing 90 minutes with alarming regularity. Beausejour is reverse OOP but it really isn’t that much of a big deal, as he’s on set pieces and has great assist potential from his runs down the line. Kone will be the main source of goals for Wigan if they wish to pull off the great escape again. Like Beausejour and Maloney, he’s also a 90 minute man every game, if fitness allows. I really think at 1.1% ownership, he could really prove to be a great buy for a 3rd striker option. Just as a comparison. Maloney’s ownership is only 2.5% and Beausejour’s, 0.2%. Either of the 3 options could be good buys, but i’d tend to lean towards Kone due to there being so many better midfield options from the big teams.
    READING:
    GK and Defence
I think the two candidates that stand out here are; Federici and Harte. Obviously, look out for Federici’s injury update but he is 1st choice now, and a massive save magnet imo. Reading don’t have great fixtures, hence his saves putting him above other defensive options in the team. I also think Harte has nailed down a starting berth for Reading lately and would consider him the best option from their defence. Kelly is probably the most nailed on @ RB, but has the least goal threat so i wouldn’t touch him. Harte is the standout option at only 4m. Menacing assist threat from set pieces, and may be on pens when ALF/POG/HUNT aren’t on the pitch. Pearce and Mariappa are the 1st choice CB’s but not totally secure so another reason for leaning towards Harte. I don’t believe Shorey will get a look-in as he seems to have had a falling out or something.
    Reading’s likely 1st choice defence: Federici/Kelly-Pearce-Mariappa-Harte
    Mid/Attack:
No standout options here imo apart from Kebe. He got injured though so it’s one to watch. I wouldn’t fancy Pogrebnyak to do much, and you can’t buy ALF and just rely on him to get goals for you off the bench. He doesn’t seem to do anything when he starts.
    QPR:
    GK and defence:
Cesar in goal but probably too expensive @ 5m. QPR’s 1st choice fullbacks seem to be Traore and Bosingwa @ 4.8m. Looks to me like Traore is more nailed on though, and it seems Fabio and Onouha both play @ RB so could come in for Bosingwa at any time. Samba and Hill will be their 1st choice CB’s for the rest of the season. I’ve slated Samba for costing too much @ 5m(4.9 now) and not being a good enough defender and maintain that over the course of the season he’s not really worth it. However this is a unique situation with it being the relegation run-in, so if you have the funds i’d say Samba could be your key differential in the mini-leagues to try and gain ground. He stands out for me as having the biggest goal threat in their defence, and being a blocksmith, along with making so many clearances per game( good for PPI). So in conclusion, i’d pick Samba from their defence:
Harry on Jose Bosingwa. “He’s trained hard and is showing the right attitude again.” He seems to not show much commitment on the pitch compared to Onouha but does the simple things okay. I can’t see either being too nailed on, so another reason to lean towards Samba.
    QPR’s likely 1st choice defence: Cesar/Bosingwa(Onouha/Fabio)- Hill-Samba-Traore
    Mid/Attack:
Only good option i see here is Remy. Taarabt was recently dropped, and i do think he’s a luxury player who will again be dropped. Don’t think he’s completely nailed on anymore, especially with Hoillet impressing and QPR having won after he got dropped. Probably too dear compared to the other options at 5.8m too.
Harry Redkanpp recently spoke about how he hasn’t had the opportunity to play Zamora and Remy together too often, so when both are available, you’d think they would both start, especially @ home. Only problem is both Remy and Zamora seem to love the physio room, so could be really risky buys. You’d imagine Remy needs to stay fit for QPR to have any chance of staying up.
    ASTON VILLA:
    GK and Defence:
I wouldn’t touch anyone from Villa’s defence right now. They, to me, are the worst defensive team in the league right now. Wigan have conceded more, but have the experience during the relegation run-in that for me, puts them ahead of Villa. Villa’s defenders are very inexperienced, and they aren’t helped by a lack of a protective screen in central midfield. This is where they miss Petrov badly. Delph and Westwood are just not good enough, and the way i see it, they’ll just have to hope they can outscore the opposition to have a chance of winning games, and surviving the drop. Once again reiterate that i wouldn’t touch any of their defenders here.
    Aston Villa’s likely 1st choice defence: Guzan/Lowton-Clark-Vlaar-Baker-Bennett(in a 3 man defence)
    Mid/Attack:
Probably obvious again, but Benteke is the real standout option here. He’s a nailed on player who’s probably the most important to his team compared to any of the other 4 relegation candidates. Has penalties in his locker too. At 7m, with decent fixtures, he could be the man to go too. However another option i’d look at is N’zogbia @ 5.8m and only 0.7% ownership, compared to Benteke’s 8.8%. N’zogbia loves a relegation battle as shown by his exploits for Wigan. Lambert seems to have taken a liking to him lately, and he seems 1st choice/nailed on now too. N’zogbia has come into form massively recently, and seems to creating most of Villa’s chances/goals. He has set pieces (corners and direct FK’s) in his locker too. Recent form prior to the City game reads as: 1 goal and 5 assists in 5 games. Impressive stuff!
    SOUTHAMPTON:
    GK and Defence:
There was a bit of a goalkeeping merry go round with Southampton earlier in the season. Davies, Gazzaniga and Boruc having all been rotated between the sticks at regular points. However with the change of manager, Boruc seems to have now established himself as the no.1. Cheaper than most keepers @ 4.4m, and could be a decent bet, but with Southampton, i can’t really look past their budget backline.
Clyne and Yoshida seem to be the most expensive of Saints’ 1st choice back 4 @ 4.2m and 4.5m respectively. Fonte and Shaw are the cheapest @ 4m. It’s pretty easy here to say that Yoshida is the worst option of the 4, being the most expensive. Shaw’ seemed to have made the LB position his own, but recently he’s been rested and then troubled by injury, unlike Clyne who’s played pretty much week in week out. No doubt for me that Shaw’s still 1st choice though when fit(Fox is woeful), but if i were going for a Southampton defender now, it would have to be Fonte. Recently back from an injury which caused him to miss so many games. He’s also a big goal threat, and can be found raiding into the opposition penalty area on numerous occasions. Seems to be 1st choice when fit now.
    Southampton’s likely 1st choice defence: Boruc/Clyne-Yoshida-Fonte-Shaw
    Mid/Attack:
I think it’s a bit of a minefield here, apart from Puncheon and Lambert who seem to be the most “nailed on”. Puncheon was rested the other week, and was straight back in this week. Recently signed a new contract, he’s been one of their best players this season. Ramirez has dropped to just 5.2m now. He’s a good goal threat, has set pieces too, but rarely lasts 90 minutes. I’d also he’s less nailed on than Puncheon. Lallana has had injury problems and was injured again this week. Was a 90 minute man week in week out but hasn’t been that lately. Don’t think he’s too nailed on under the new manager, and for 5.8m, there’s probably better options too. Can’t really say much more about Lambert really. He was the bargain 3rd striker option since the start of the season, and it’s been a massive oversight by me to not have had him for longer. Goes without saying, that his goals will be crucial to steer Southampton to relative safety! Still a bargain at 7.2m with pens and fk’s too!

      Great post.

And I thank you for not including my team (Sunderland) in this list. You obviously have more faith in us than I do right now! 😀

A thing I would add about Benteke is that he is behind only Berbatov and Suarez for touches as a striker this season. Everything goes through him. Although with Nzog around now in the hole there is good reason to look at Nzog as an alternative as he's added a bit of creativity that was badly lacking before. This can only be good for Benteke though too as he will have someone to create chances for him hopefully.

I'm going to monitor Wigan as I feel they are truly shocking at times. But I suppose against lesser opposition than Liverpool they can flourish (see 3-0 @ Reading and 3-0 @ Villa for examples)

Some of the players at the top of my ML have 6 playing at the minute, so will be taking hits just to get 9 playing.

As soon as Rooney played 40 minutes after coming back from injury i did the switch straight away. I regret nothing. Van Persie's PPG dips when Roonster is playing.

+1. Im getting Lukaku for Aguero next GW, then switching to Rooney for the Reading game. Looking forward to it. Rooney was alot better than RVP yesterday, and has been better than him for the last few United-games ive seen, with the Real game beeing the exeption.

Prob selling after Spurs game later, making 3 or 4 transfers and leaving enough cash to get him back week after.

Rooney looks a good option too

May go in with a hit and 7m (RVP Salvage Fund) in the bank next GW:

    Bunn
    GJ - Clyne - Pearce
    Bale - Michu - Sissoko - Sess/N'Zog
    Suarez - Sturridge - Lambert

    Bego Cameron Walcott Azpi

    Thoughts?

A: do giroud >> Suarez today and end up with sturridge Suarez for gw29
B: do giroud >> benteke and have sturridge benteke for gw29, will do sturridge >> Suarez in gw30 at potentially 0.4m higher cost
C: don't kneejerk on Suarez and retain faith with sturridge

Is there any wild speculation on

    a) Sturridge playing next week?
    b) When the other 3 missing games might happen? Been trying to keep up with this, and I know Monday fixtures might mean they get spread out over multiple weeks.

    Thank you gorgeous people 🙂

    Walcott (CP 9.4; PP 8.6; SP 9.0)
    Mata (CP 10.0; PP 9.6; SP 9.8)

Walcott's price seems to fall tonight.. price of both players may fall couple of weeks before next gameweek..
