With Villa and City set to play out the Gameweek later on this evening, we focus on a trio of midfielders whose weekend displays suggest they could have a real say in the last two months of the season. Daniel Sturridge’s propensity to pick up knocks is also on our minds, while Loic Remy’s eye for goal suggests QPR’s quest for survival might not depend on a certain misfiring Moroccan, after all:

Kagawa has announced himself…
When United sealed the deal to bring Shinji Kagawa from Dortmund last summer our expectations were understandably high. Kagawa had fired 13 goals and pitched in with eight assists in his final season in Germany, providing a vital cog in their attacking ploys. We pictured Kagawa playing off the striker, feeding the bullets to Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez. Then United signed Robin Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s arrival set up the partnership with Rooney and left Kagawa’s role in doubt. Significantly, Saturday’s game against Norwich handed the Japanese international a rare start playing in a central role, giving Kagawa the opportunity to demonstrate his talents with an exquisite hat-trick. Cue Sir Alex Ferguson’s beaming post-match reaction and the assurance that “next year he’ll be far, far better.”

That will give us food for thought over the summer, as we ponder Kagawa’s progress and a potential increase in role in United’s purring attacking machine. As for this season, Kagawa has perhaps done enough to earn more starts – with just five appearances in the first XI from Gameweek 8 onwards, his Fantasy potential has been limited but if United can wrap up the title early, Kagawa may get further opportunities to show his blossoming talents.

It’s time to put our trust in De Gea….
Four consecutive shut-outs for the United back four have suddenly lifted Sir Alex’s defence amongst the best on show – with nine clean sheets, only Chelsea, Liverpool and City can better the league leaders’ tally. There’s surely more to come: United’s run-in is favourable and the only obstacle for investment appears to be the threat of rotation within a rearguard that boasts worthy assets – notably Rafael and Jonny Evans. Of course, you can invest the cash and get royalty in the form of Patrice Evra, a player who tops the defender rankings after enjoying a profitable season at both ends of the pitch.

Alternatively, David De Gea is the other route open to us. Having looked likely to be subject to rotation with Anders Lindegaard it’s one we’ve been reluctant to explore but De Gea has started the last 13 matches, including both league outings prior to the Champions League clashes with Madrid. This surely cements De Gea as United’s number one, removing the doubt over his security of starts and boosting his Fantasy stock. Available for 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, the Spanish stopper is the cheapest option on offer and now perhaps the answer for those looking to cover United’s new resilience, without shelling out the big bucks required for Evra.

Oscar is stealing Mata’s thunder…
While Juan Mata’s owners watched the Spaniard frustrate for the third Gameweek running, Chelsea’s young Brazilian took centre stage, peppering the West Brom goal and helping to inspire a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Oscar was at the forefront of Chelsea’s attacking waves, cropping up in the box and leaving Mata and Eden Hazard to drift to wide areas. He’s started six of the last seven – a pattern of rotation that’s similar to that of his more senior team-mates, although the return of Victor Moses does perhaps put more strain on his security of starts. Given Saturday’s performance, however, there’s an increasing feeling that, like Kagawa, Oscar could finish the season strongly; that perhaps both Hazard and Mata will diminish as factors as Oscar contributes more goals and assists to the Chelsea cause.

Coutinho already looks a bit special…
Two Premier League starts and, already, Philippe Coutinho has a goal and two assists to his name. While Luis Suarez soaked up the plaudits and added another match-ball to his collection, the 20-year-old Brazilian quietly exploited the gaps in Wigan’s midfield to slice open the defence and provide the foundations for Liverpool’s menacing 4-0 victory. There may still be doubts on his physicality – on whether he’ll cope with back-to-back starts when the rough stuff inevitably comes his way. The player himself seems determined to shrug off such treatment and, from his DW display, it’s clear he possesses the tools to punish those who fail to shackle his movement and imagination. Like Kagawa and Oscar, Coutinho was placed in that “wait and see” bracket – unlike that pairing, Fantasy managers may well be willing to make the gamble early. A modest 6.5 FPL price tag and a seemingly telepathic understanding with Suarez certainly helps matters.

Injuries could settle the Sturridge vs Suarez debate…
Arguably, if Daniel Sturridge had been fit to start at Wigan, Luis Suarez would not have had the opportunities to convert his hat-trick. Indeed, you have to wonder just what Sturridge would have made of the gaps in the Latics rearguard, how he would have fed off the service of Coutinho. As it was, Sturridge missed out – a knock, purportedly more trouble with the thigh injury sustained recently at City – kept him out with Brendan Rodgers stressing that he will look to protect Sturridge. Certainly, the form of Suarez in the central striking role allows Rodgers time to ease him back into the frame. The recent spell of strains and scrapes have undermined Sturridge’s potential and won the argument for those holding Suarez in their Fantasy lineups; it remains to be seen if Sturridge can shake off this recent run of knocks, regain the central role and re-start the debate.

It’s Remy that’s vital to QPR’s chances, not Taarabt…
We’ve spent words on this site reciting the statistics, predicting that, if QPR were to survive then Adel Taarabt will be the key figure. Aside from a brief glimpse of his talents in the win over Fulham, the Moroccan has done little but frustrate both his Fantasy owners and Harry Redknapp – so much so that the R’s boss had seen enough. Junior Hoilett, another player much admired on these pages, earned a start on the Rangers’ left at St Mary’s and his performance was surely enough to see Taarabt face an uphill battle to regain the opportunity to impress. While Hoilett sparkled, it was Loic Remy who provided the threat. Flanking the stand-in target man, Jay Bothroyd, Remy’s movement and pace troubled a Saints defence, while his smart finish for the R’s opener gave a glimpse of what Redknapp’s side have been missing – a natural goalscorer, capable of firing them to safety. Remy is still thought to be short of full match fitness but it’s clear he’s got enough in the tank to provide a spark. If Redknapp can build on that and get Bobby Zamora alongside him, the escape act might still be on and Fantasy managers may still have some interest in the wares at Shepherds Bush.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anyone know how long Dempsey is out??
Siggy a decent differential if it's a while, got the nod over Holtby and provided the assist for Bale's goal.
    Thanks

I currently have 6 players (5 if Sturridge doesn't make it) for the next GW. Is it really nuts to be considering the following:

Cole + Pog to Azpi + Remy for -4?

I know Azpi won't play this GW but I'd like to keep Chelsea defensive coverage and I have exactly enough to do both. Remy feels like a knee-jerk but he's a class player playing in a team that needs to win at all costs and who, according to the ticker, have the second-best fixtures of all those remaining.

I don't normally take hits but I figure this is effectively a -2, hopefully less and has some long-term benefit to it...

What if Azpi gets injured or suspended before the next GW? Fine with the hit but get a playing defender in. Debuchy perhaps.

It looks a decent enough move if Chelsea had a game but surprised you're considering it on the fact they don't.

Much rather go for Debuchy myself and get another player out this week.

Taking a -4 on a playing defender would be inadvisable this week - doing it for a non-playing one is a really bad idea...

I think there's a slight misconception about how you define a differential. I think the idea of a differential is often confused with a player that offers value. Differentials and value players are not the same.

Take Suarez and Sturridge as an example.

If you look at the stats, I don't believe Sturridge is a massive differential. Is he better value than Suarez? Yes, most certainly. But is he a big differential? I'm not so sure.

A differential for me differs from a player that offers value alongside another in the same team.

Take Aguero as an example here. His differential status is set in stone as Tevez and Dzeko are right now not even particularly viable options. Therefore, their value is dented by the fact they are not nailed on, unlike Sturridge (when fit). If Aguero scores you lots of points over the next 6 weeks then the points that come from him scoring are pretty much all heading towards the 6% that own him.

In contrast, Sturridge's success will most likely overlap with Suarez's success. It is hard to imagine Sturridge being significantly more successful than Suarez as they both play in the same team and share shots together. There's also the fact that as the key creator in the team, Suarez will more often than not be providing assists for Sturridge. So you could argue that there isn't a whole lot of difference there.

But then comes the value argument. If you firmly believe that Sturridge can match Suarez until the end of the season, then you are saving yourself 3/4m to spend elsewhere. That's fantastic value but is it a massive differential? I don't think so. Mainly because there is so little between them and their points will often come in tandem as I've tried to explain above.

In conclusion, if you seek value then go for Sturridge, by all means. But if you are expecting him to outscore Suarez by more than 10/15 points I think that's very optimistic. And considering the ownership of Suarez all round, you are first and foremost hoping he can match and compete with Suarez's points for the rest of the season. But seeing him as a major differential is a slightly flawed idea.

Thanks for reading. Reward yourself with this pleasurable eargasm:

Surely a differential is just a player with low-ish ownership, and a vague prospect of decent returns?

It is a concept that seems to confuse people though, and be used to justify all sorts of bats### crazy decisions. I work with someone who is trying to find a differential against Bale. For reasons of professional decency I haven’t pointed out that he has found loads in the last month – shame for him all differentials aren’t positive.

Yeah, for example...Lennon isn't really a differential to Bale. If you are expecting Lennon to differentiate then you're on the road to nowhere. Will he offer relatively good value over a season though? Yes. But I guess my main point is that players from the same team don't really work as differentials to high-owned big hitters.

Whereas you have someone like Benteke. All of his points are coming from Aston Villa's success. And no-one owns any Villa players nor are there heavy hitters elsewhere in the team. Therefore you are getting decent points from a place where no points are being spread around elsewhere. Benteke's success as a differential isn't hindered by a superior, high-owned heavy hitter that plays in the same team.

But Lennon is a differential, you have a team of 15 players of which only 1 is Bale. Lennon could be seen as a replacement for Bale, but whilst this could work it is not a move seeking a differential, but a defensive manouever for someone low on team value.

Yeah, I guess I'm trying to argue whether or not Sturridge is going to be a successful differential. He is a differential in spirit. But there's a difference between simply calling something a differential because it's different over having a successful differential which is outscoring the highly-owned player by a significant amount in order to justify it.

But nobody is suggesting that Sturridge will outscore Suarez, they think that the saving can be spent better elsewhere. The stupid thing is there is no reason not to have both Suarez and Sturridge, and the idea of comparing them in isolation is silly. You have 3 striker spots, get the best 3 you can.

Well I'd read some people trying to argue optimistically that Sturridge might 'hopefully' outscore Suarez by the end. If you judge the past there is not a whole lot suggesting there is reason to be optimistic about this. If he does it will be lucky.

Don't agree, Suarez does exactly what is said on the tin, is a different class in relation to Sturridge, and and is practically injury proof. Has to make up 34 pts on Suarez on me after just one game, has a history of being injury prone. Its about points at the end of the day.

Other factor to mention, had debates prior to weekend with those who felt Sturrige off the pitch would have a negative impact. It doesn't, as proven this weekend. I am not saying Sturridge is a poor option, the danger is that if he doesn't play, Suarez owners as with the weekend can gain a big advantage. Suarez 34(c) for me Sturridge 0. He simply has to play.

have both. think dawson is best as he has slightly more attacking threat, plays for the better team, and davies might face some competition to his spot very soon, not to mention his fixtures are hard.

He is up to the same tricks he was at the start of last season. Really good stats and absolutely no end product. I don’t blame people who get tempted - history suggests he is one to avoid however.

Hits are a funny old thing I'm finding. Went most of my first 2 1/2 seasons taking a hit every other week near enough - it becomes habit. Now gone 8 weeks without taking one and whilst I currently only have 6 and two half players for next week I really can't see myself taking one. Usual me would be taking a -8 no problem but I don't seem so keen to roll the dice at the moment.

And there ends my thrilling tale.

I almost never do early transfers either so the probability of the early free transfer needing a hit to get a decent XI out later in the week is lower. Although I've done that all of this season.

I've taken 1 hit all season which was a fail and I've only regretted not taking a hit once.

I think it depends on your managing style. Once you start taking more risks, you need to make more transfers to clear out the failed punts.

So what's your ideal combination of Manchester United/Liverpool forwards for the run in? I feel like almost everyone is going to have at least 2 of RVP, Suarez, Rooney and Sturridge, and I think picking the right combination is going to be crucial. As recently as last week I was set on Sturridge and RVP. Now I'm torn, I can make a case for any of the four.

Probably Suarez and RVP will score more, but Sturridge and Rooney will be close behind and will offer better value I think.

Perhaps a combination of value and raw points scoring ability (for captaincy). Suarez and Rooney or Sturridge and RVP maybe?

Yep, I think it will be one of those two, Suarez/RVP are pretty darn expensive. It seems like Rooney/Suarez will play more minutes, but RVP/Sturridge will have more points per minute/way better value, respectively. It's a tough one.

HELP PLEASE! Been struggling (37 points this GW).

Used 2 FTs and now have 8 players (9 if Sturridge is fit and 10 if Guthrie plays which is unlikely):
    Bunn (Cesar)
    Fabio Davies Harte (Clichy Demel)
Guthrie Sessegnon, Bale, Sissoko (c) (Walcott)
    Sturridge, Benteke (RVP)

    4.1m in the bank

    1) Take -4 hit for Demel to Glen Johnson for 10 players
    2) Another -4 hit – suggestions welcome
    3) Keep team the same

      1) isn't a bad idea, but only if it fits with your long term plans. ie. don't expect GJ to earn back the 4 points this week alone, he probably won't.

You haven't got a bad forward 6 there, so should do OK this week.

Key thing is to try and work out what you want to do with all the fixture disruption coming up. This is going to be a weird week, just focus on getting out the other side of it, don't make more problems for yourself.

Yeah its a good option, but don't really like QPR. very unpredictable team.

Benteke or Lambert is what I think

          zabaleta
          rafael

would be for 2 weeks until i start prepin for DGW (s)

cant see logic behind losing 0.5 on walcott/mata/RVP for average player for a few weeks

Well I saved 2fts for gw29 and the major headaches, and had 85pt week with no hits coming out this week so for once I did seem to plan it right! It will all go swimmingly if Norwich can keep a clean sheet I am sure of it. Front 6 should have some big returns hopefully. I think there will be many a midfield like that this week!

Who do you consider to be the best replacement for Rafa at Chelsea?
            1) Mourinho
            2) Hiddink
            3) Simeone
            4) Moyes
            5) Zola

I would love to see Mourinho or Zola take over.

I cant see why anyone would take the job, it career suicide. They are gonna get the sort of managers that Barnet were used too soon. Great managers that are out of the game for a few years and want a short term job to try and raise their profile again.

Most of us have owned Michu at some point this season.

I shipped him after DGW blank, for Fellaini.

Anyone else in the same boat, now wondering if its worth finishing the season without Michu??

I ditched him for Bale GW27 and have no immediate plans to bring him back (though I would have liked to do Felaini>Michu this week if funds allowed). For me Sissoko offers better vfm over Michu for the remainder of the season

Well, quite the opposite (sort of).

Ive just got him back for a few weeks because they have GREAT fixtures including 3 out of 4 at home I think, and Fellaini has a) a blank this week, and then b) City.

I would consider Fellaini again in a few weeks...or.......next season!
