Carlos Tevez steps in for the injured Sergio Aguero to grab the only goal as City clinch the points at Villa. Roberto Mancini sticks to a 4-5-1 formation once again as the visitors grind out their sixth clean sheet in eight to cut the gap at the top to 12 points behind neighbours United:

Aguero Concerns for City
Last night’s team sheet delivered an unexpected blow for Sergio Aguero’s owners after the Argentine was ruled out with a late injury – the forward took to twitter just before the match to deliver his own prognosis:

“I felt a crick in my right knee during last training so I won’t make it against Aston Villa today. It’s a pity I can’t be there for my team at this moment. All I can do is recover, and I’m already on it.”

Although press reports suggest he will also miss the FA Cup clash against Barnsley this weekend, judging by his comments, Aguero certainly sounds optimistic of a quick recovery. While he may not be ruled out for any length of time, the uncertainty that still surrounds Gameweek 29 is a real issue. Currently, City don’t have a fixture with their home clash against Wigan yet to be rescheduled – Fantasy managers are still hoping a decision will be made on this, one way or the other, in order to aid out planning ahead of the weekend’s deadline. Despite having scored just once in his last five, Aguero remains Mancini’s first-choice forward but his 6% owners are already scouring the market for replacements as a result of last night’s absence.

Tevez Showing Form
The Argentine was handed his first start in four as a result of his compatriot’s absence and secured the points with a coolly taken finish. Tevez has now notched in back-to-back Gameweeks, having climbed off the bench to grab City’s second against Chelsea last time out, but questions remain over his starting berth. Once again, Roberto Mancini rolled out a 4-5-1 formation for the trip to Villa – a clear sign that, despite United’s significant lead at the top of the table, the City boss is content to grind out victories; if Aguero is fit, there’s every chance Tevez will drop back to the bench.

Although his decision to send on Edin Dzeko to partner Tevez proved decisive, his hand was somewhat forced after Jack Rodwell was forced off with a recurrence of his hamstring problem; indeed, despite a slim one-goal advantage, Mancini’s caution was highlighted by Tevez’s withdrawal on 75 minutes, as Samir Nasri’s introduction allowed City to return to a five-man midfield, with Dzeko the lone forward. In spite of Tevez’s form, an early return for Aguero, coupled with a likely blank Gameweek 29 and a schedule that sees the champions travel to Everton, United and Spurs in their next five, is more than enough to dissuade Fantasy managers from snapping up Tevez right now.

City’s Defensive Resilience
Similar to neighbours United, Roberto Mancini’s outfit are stepping up in defensive resilience as the season enters the final straight. While United registered their fourth consecutive clean sheet in Saturday’s win over Norwich, City’s 1-0 win was the sixth time in the last eight Gameweeks they have kept out their opponents – three of those clean sheets have arrived in the last five, despite Vincent Kompany’s calf injury absence. Although Pablo Zabaleta owners will be happy to hold, that above-mentioned schedule could deter some from investing in the City rearguard despite their impressive form at the back. Zabaleta’s propensity to pick up points at both ends of the pitch has been crucial over the last few months – he has either scored, assisted or registered a clean sheet in 10 of his last 13 appearances now.

Villa Midfield Problems
With attacking returns in four of his previous five Gameweeks, Charles N’Zogbia was one of the league’s in-form midfielders heading into last night’s fixture. The former Wigan man looked a possible option ahead of a couple of crucial matches – Villa now face the bottom two in a pair of proverbial six-pointers, with a weekend trip to Reading preceding a home game with QPR, but Paul Lambert’s decision to withdraw the Frenchman on 64 minutes perhaps places question marks over his game time. Lambert is also without Fabian Delph for that pair of fixtures – the combative midfielder earned his tenth caution of the campaign and will now serve a two-match ban.

Very few players who perform well in the first half of the season replicate or better that form in the second half of the season.

There are exceptions to this regression theory. Baines in previous seasons and obviously the machine that is Bale this season. But which most top performers will be those that have an up turn in form, perhaps recovered from an injury, tactical shift for example.

Be interesting to see canvas which players you all think will have a storming end to the season.

    I'll get the ball rolling

Sissoko - like Cisse last season he is on fire and benefitting from a tactical shift. He is also off many of the masses radar as he is new to the Prem League

Rooney - can see his game time increasing if he can remain injury free. Apart from injuries he's actually been a good performer.

Oscar...its taken time to adapt, but appears to be getting a good run and replicating his CL form.

Silva ....I think at home especially he will do well. Still a little unsure.

Siggy.....juries still out for me on this one..but once again if he can get a run of games, who knows.

    Nzog....already seeing his upturn.

Sess...move to the flanks is benefitting him...as with Nzog we are already seeing an upturn.

Countinho....new boy syndrome like Cisse is good. Downing as well...but not sure either are top five mid potential.

I can see Gerrard regressing. Suarez like Bale is a machine and will keep going.

I got my doubts about Silva. Rooney is a great shout, not sure Sissoko can keep this up, Newcastle are still pretty inconsistent. Oscar looked the most threatning player on the pitch last game and there's no doubting his skill set, could have a great second half if he gets enough gametime.

Interesting read Jonty! Mine would be: -

Debuchy - constantly been saying his attacking returns will increase when HBA is back (cutting inside leaving the right flank free for him to roam)

Kagawa - Taken time for him to adjust plus get back to full match fitness following his injury, think we will see a much improved player

Morrison - Some might call me crazy, but he took a downturn when his position changed. With WBA now looking like a fit again squad, expect the attacking returns to come again.

See your point Doos, thinking more assists wise. Debuchy will work in a similiar fashion to Baines and Pienaar.

Although before anyone says it, I'm not directly comparing those 2 sets of players on returns. Just an example

I'm tempted to ditch Mata and go for him or Oscar.....I'm seeing Mata regression already.

I'd also add Arsenal's Monreal to the list. Lots of Spanish football pundits rated him as one of the best players in La Liga...close second only to Alba...I think he'll do well as well. I've pencilled him in for the double.

    GW29:

    Federici
    Harte, Onuoha, Debuchy, Davies
    Michu, Sissoko, Bale
    Sturridge, Suarez

@RVP: A bit tired, but good, you? Looking at QPR's fixtures, I see your point. Maybe a bit soon to completely write them off as fantasy assets. And there's not too many good options around that price bracket at the moment (Cuellar still not gotten his spot back and Stoke keep conceding).

I've had him since he joined QPR!

CS first game and squat since. Still waiting for the goals I expected from him like the Blackburn days.

I hear ya but perhaps it's his price? In a team like QPR it seems a bit hard to swallow. However if he was to get a goal and keep a CS that would all fade away.

Because I think it's obvious that 90%+ will struggle to field 11, so if you have 11, it doesn't need a RMT - it's a good side for this GW

No plans for it initially. One thing we developed for wordpress was the ability to mark your comment as a RMT comment and for mods to mark comments as RMT. We could do this again to allow filtering. Users would get extra rep bonus for earning +1's on RMT replies as an incentive not to ignore them.

a hit when you can field 11 is only really -2 in my eyes as you are getting 2 points at leats you would not have got and its a bonus if you get a goal/assist etc!! quite a good way to sort your team. for example i had nolan who was weiging me down so have swopped for Schneiderlin. i know it sounds daft but he is nailed and may get more than 2 points but long term i can then have a strong attacking side moving forward. discuss

See your point, but I'll only try and take a hit if I can see a strong chance of extra returns. For example, the other week I brought in Sissoko, Cisse and Bale for a hit which did pay off handsomely. However, this week I'm looking at playing 9 because I can't see anyone this week (or beyond) that will claw me back from a 4pt hit

Indeed, I've taken a lot more than I liked this season. I was looking at a max of 10 hits in total. My punts on Young and Cisse around gw12 didn't help at all!

Also depends if you're a points chaser it seems they take more hits than most.

      cheers mates
I went for Muller. I realized I only had 9.0 to spend and Huntellaar was 9.5, so it was an easier choice... what do you think of this team:

      Sigiru (Valdes)
Bonnuci | Vidal | Howedes (Dimichelis | Bonfim)
Menez | Marchisio | Reus | Feghouli (Kroos)
      Messi | Ronaldo | Muller

This is what I'll be having so far fellas. Care to spare a few thoughts?

    Bunn
    Enrique - Pearce - Davies
    Bale - Sissoko - Michu
    Benteke - Suarez (c)

Bench: Begovic - Pogrebnyak - Demel - Walcott - Mata

Would you trade anyone barring Pog out for a hit to field XI?

Nope, stick imo. But not sure as Suarez as a C choice this week. Benteke could actually be the better option

Benteke, yes. Fairly decent option I'd say. Just that Suarez's form is immense. Cheers for the input Pap.

Not convinced by WBAs fixtures Fahanomore Utd. But for safety, I'd just like a 10th man out there.

          Prego! 😀

Yeah, it is a bit of a conundrum. I definately wouldn't take a hit for a Def this week, no stand out CS options imo

Struggling to field 6 in GW lots of manu and chelsea players.

    Available players:
    0 Gk
    1 Def - Harte
3 Mid - Michu, Bale, Sissoko
    2 Forwards Suarez, Lambert

Getting rid of mata and anchiebe to get in 2 players playing GW 29.

Any suggetions - total spend available 15.7

Is it worthwhile taking additional hits to field any defender also ?

Hi guys, have to get rid of pog and aguero. I have Suarez and I'll probably be looking to get rvp in after his blank.

Right now I'm stuck on picking two out of benteke, lambert and lukaku. Probably only one will be for the medium to long term alongside rvp and Suarez. Right now thinking benteke and lukaku, with lukaku being the long term one.

What two should I go for? Thanks, any input much appreciated!

Have you considered Remy at all? Personally think Harry will avoid the drop which means they;ll need some results.....just a thought

I actually thought remy was a midfielder haha just checked there now! Had considered him but didn't want to reshuffle my mids. Will probably go lambert and remy now, thanks for the replies guys.

I'm actually going to say Benteke for the long term off those two.

      Fancy a punt on Cisse/Remy?
