We’re down to just 64 teams in Paddy Power Members Cup, as Gameweek 28 saw another round of managers fall by the wayside.

Former winner “Fuzzy Dunlop” remains in the mix, edging his way through to the fourth round with a narrow 75-72 victory over “Stills”. The community juggernaut that is “Evs” also rolls on – ranked 14th in the world, he disposed of his third round opponent, “ff addict” by a convincing 81-66 scoreline. As for the contributors, Paul remains in the hat, cruising to a 64-52 victory over “Schnitzengrubens”.

With a decimated Gameweek 29 providing the next round of matches, we could see some upsets next time around. The draw for the fourth round will be published tomorrow afternoon.

@Granville or anyone else with knowledge of this.

I've heard that OPTA are taking over from EA sports next year. Will this effect how assists are awarded? OPTA is very strict with assists and many assists that are given in FPL are not actually real assists but assists that adhere to FPL's rules.

I'm worried that they will take away the FPL rules for assists as I find it makes the game better. It allows for more points to be scored which is why the game is fun.

Basically what I meant Granville is if Opta are now the official guys doing the stats for EPL does that affect FPL? And most importantly will that affect the generous assists they give in FPL?

I would be annoyed if they stopped giving those kind of assists as I think it's fun how they have the rules now. Making it harder to score points generally will make the game even more about goals only.

          +1

The more points the better. They should give two assists like in ice hockey 🙂

I take it you don't agree then? I think it would be a shame for the game itself to make it harder for mids/strikers to score points. I understand they're not 'real' assists but the loosening of the rules make it so there is more access to points and therefore more fun.

              Not sure if serious?

There's a difference between 'more access to points' and contriving points which is what the new assist rule has become. OPTA tracks so much more than PA and crucially they are far more accurate.

Some 'genuine' assists can be just as ridiculous. A guy who plays a side ways pass of a few yards to a player who then scores a great individual goal, what has he done to deserve the points? Or Ashley Young last year when he taps the ball about a centimetre for Rooney to smash in against Arsenal? That worth 3 points?

Of course some assists are very questionable now but i wouldn't change it back given the choice

I agree Superdunny, as much as some assists are very contrived as Granville puts it, I wouldn't want to change it. Yes you might feel hard done by if your rival got a lucky assist but it would be the same for you later on getting a few lucky assists along the way. Making it ultra strict means there is less points given for assists and the game is fun because there is more access to points this way.

I wouldn't change it either. I love that there is always a chance for assists when there is goals. And as you said, many assists are pretty dubious anyway...i.e someone passing it to a guy on the halfway line and he runs the pitch and scores.

                Unfortunately I am serious.

Would it also take away assist for penalties? Are they real assists? I just think for the game alone it is a good thing to loosen the rules like they have. Yes, it's a little contrived but for the sake of the game it's fun. I would never try to argue certain assists given by their rules are actually assists. Most people are aware of this. But often times it would feel frustrating that there'd be so many unassisted goals. Do you see what I mean at all or are you someone who is for complete OPTA accuracy?

I understand but I like the loosening of the rules for the assists. I understand it's a little silly if their original cross is booted out and someone hammers it home but for me scoring points is why this game is fun...make it extremely strict and it's all about goals.

as a non suarez owner, its seems there's no option for the armband to consider besides Bale.

Bale is a solid option, no opponent seems capable of shutting him down these days its just a matter of whether he finds the net, which he is joyously doing.

I had a quick look at your team Fuzzy, as I see it you only have two sensible options (not knowing your two transfers for this week).

Clyne, or my prefered choice of

      Guzan.

Now pull yourself together and make one of those captain and the other VC.

    Team stands now at
    Bunn
    Davies, Wilson
    Sissoko, Michu, Bale
    Sturridge, Suarez

Begovic, Demel, Mertesacker, Rafael, Mata, Walcott, RVP

Thinking Mertesacker out for Santon or Debuchy? Could then take a hit to get Martin in for Demel, but would that be silly?

Do you need this transfer for a ML H2H game?

I'm coming to the conclusion that this week will likely stink for scores anyway, and most people are probably better off having better options for the next few which are most likely to include DGWs for the players you're about to take out.

I think if it changes the FPL rules about assists it is a bad thing.

As I've tried to argue above in a longwinded way...more points = more fun.

If goals are constantly scored without assists then it becomes even more about the goalscoring Michu's etc. Being generous about assists is a good thing in my opinion despite it not adhering to OPTA's official rules on assists.

But this isn't OPTA, this is FPL = fantasy football. It should be all about being fun and the fantasy element allows for this tweaking of the rules to ensure there is more access to points along the way.

This is just my opinion and as Superdunny said, I wouldn't change it if I had a choice.

It turns out I have a poor knowledge of the Reading, Villa and QPR midfields, entirely bereft of talent as they are. The only player I missed that I have considered in fantasy terms this season though is Anthony Pilkington, shows where my focus is.

Is there something wrong with the UCL game tonight ( apart from the abysmal way it has been run this year)

I need to find out what is going on with my points. Suddenly, despite an OK(ish) score of 31 I had dropped from position 10,899 to 154,979. In my mini league I have dropped places to teams who have scored like 12 points.

    Is there something wrong?

At the risk of boring you all (what's new?) 😀

I'll give you an example of why I feel the assist rules in FPL should remain the same for the sake of the game itself and not adhere to the strict OPTA rules.

An example of a lucky assist that is allowed in FPL is Spurs vs Chelsea early on in the season when Hazard took a corner which was headed away by Gallas only to be smashed home on the volley by Cahill.

This is technically not a Hazard assist by opta rules and it does seem a touch absurd.

But then you have another example of an assist that is only given by FPL and not OPTA:

Man Utd vs Newcastle, Ba shoots from just outside the box, De Gea parries it away but only into the path of James Perch who taps it home.

This isn't an OPTA assist because Ba's intention wasn't to assist Perch but by taking the shot he has effectively assisted Perch in scoring.

There might be a good few examples of the Hazard assists that people feel are unfair but then there are also plenty like the Ba assist where people would feel a bit hard done by if they were watching it to see Ba gets no points for his assistance in the goal.

The Ba assist is an example of why I think making FPL strictly adhere to OPTA's rule only harms the game of FPL. We enjoy FPL because it is FANTASY football where you get points when players do things on a football pitch...including getting bonus points. Bonus points don't exist in OPTA stats or real life and the same with these dubious assists but they make the game FUN and that is the most important thing to bear in mind.

I wonder, if with the opta stats they will introduce the bonus point system from the MLS game, which is run by the same people. The Opta stats would easily allow them to allocate the following..

      Attacking Bonus

Players will score extra points for positive play:

1 point for every 3 crosses (A cross is defined where the ball is played to their own player in the penalty area)
1 point for every 3 key passes (A key pass is one that leads to a shot at goal)
1 point for every big chance created (A big chance is one where the analyst determines the player should score)
-1 point for every big chance missed

      Defending Bonus

Players will also score extra points for good defending:

1 point for every 6 clearances, blocks or interceptions
1 point for every 6 recovered balls
-1 point for every error leading to a goal

I'd welcome these kind of ideas as scoring points makes the game fun. Making it so that goals only get you points along with really strict assist rules makes it harder to score points which goes against why we love this game...seeing some points at the end of the weekend!

I like the current system too. You'll certainly get some dubious assists like your first example, but I think on the majority of occasions the assisting player will have been involved enough to qualify for an assist.

Anything that takes points from midfielders / defenders and places more importance on the three attackers limits the impact of our decision-making on the game.

This is what I'm trying to get at. Thanks TokyoRed.

Basically, anything that limits/restricts the game even further I think is a bad thing for the game of FPL. We all feel a bit miffed about those Hazard assists (oh that was so lucky, he didn't even mean it to get to Cahill) but that is balanced out by the Ba kind of assists. Shutting off avenues for points just makes it more and more about goals ONLY.

'Pure' assists are what OPTA goes by but as I said, FPL is a fantasy game and stretching the rules to allow for extra avenues for points can only be a good thing.

And like you said, the player is often involved enough to make the awarding of the assist justifiable.

We've gotten away with this sort of thing a few times. Not sure we will here.

Its still bad cricket, but before theres been more chance of turning 100-6 into something respectable. Easier when you have Bresnan playing and Swann coming in at 9. We suddenly seem to have a rather long tail, and the top order has just gone a bit mental.

Rebounds should definitely count as assists. If a player manages to beat a few players and then has a good effort on goal that a teammate follow in. That's more of an assist than a square pass that is then smashed into the top corner from about 25 yards. It'd be a shame of they tightened up on points. If they do that they might as well add points for things like interceptions etc, it would definitely add a new dimension to players, especially the ones that are good but not FPL good.

I totally agree. Some pure OPTA assists are even more dubious than the rebound type assists they give in FPL. The point is that the shot the player took led to the keeper putting it in the path of another player to strike home. I can imagine if they took those kind of assists away people would be really annoyed. I don't think they should change the rules.

Not really a helpful answer, but B for the players you are getting in, plus if for some reason RVP becomes a poor option, you will have plenty of dosh to play with. A, for the simple fact you will be losing Pog, I just ( which may be proved wrong ) proving to much in terms of returns.

The last player to touch the ball from the scoring team should always get the assist, for the simple reason that if they hadn't touched it in the way they had, then a goal would not have ensued.

Immaterial if it wasn't 'elegant' or intended.

Just tiredly logged on for the first time today and see some worry about OPTA becoming the data partner for the Prem (in place of PA, presumably). Apparently the assists we know and love/hate could never be the same again.

My first thought is, think again about what actually has changed. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like a very simple change:

FPL needs a list of events from each game to make various scoring decisions such as bonus (shots, blocks, tackles, clearances, etc) and assists (who touched it second last). Currently this is provided by the pretty awful PA live text. Go to the BBC website and click on a game, then click on the live text tab. "Someone took a shot from somewhere, block made by someone who didn't actually block it..." Half the time when bonuses are reviewed it's because of screwups in the live text. Recently Stephen Kelly was awarded a save. Yes the Reading right back. I kid you not.

All that's happened is that this objective description of game events has been outsourced to a much more reliable source that do it as their business, OPTA. The same OPTA we use in the member stats. If you've used them you'll already know what it says in the press release - they record every game event as a position, time and player. This is simply a much more precise and comprehensive version of the live text.

The rules are independent of where the data comes from. The data has simply become more reliable. Unless FPL themselves decide to change the rules, they'll still be looking for who got the second last touch. Only this time they're asking someone who has a clue.

    Just my two cents.

Wow, well if this is the case then that's fantastic and can only be a good thing. I just assumed for some reason that maybe because OPTA were now involved the assist rules might be changed.

Out of interest, what's your take on the assist rules in FPL as they are? I tried to give two examples above where some FPL assists are extremely dubious but that some are in some ways fair. (Hazard vs. Ba) It sounds like a legal case 😀

I like it the way it is because second last touch is objective. The clearance inside the box rule is also objective. For me the main thing is keeping rules objective and sensible so that there is little room for argument. End of the day if your player is involved in attacking play a lot he'll pick up assists if the rule is second last touch, guaranteed.

Yeah, I think FPL have it this way deliberately because they know how strict OPTA are about assists. Or rather, how strict real life assists actually are. I just hope they keep it that way for the sake of the game because it makes it more fun to have the rules stretched a little. Points are fun, strictness is for OPTA's official stats at the end of the season. I think most know what qualifies as an actual assist but don't mind it how it is because it rewards a player's involvement in a goal and thus makes points more accessible.
