United slip out of the Champions League reckoning as Cristiano Ronaldo scores the crucial goal to secure Madrid’s progress. Hatem Ben Arfa could be afforded a run out in Newcastle’s Europa League match with Anzhi, Kieran Gibbs is nearing a return to fitness, Adam Lallana should recover from a head knock sustained last weekend and Daniel Sturridge is expected to return for Liverpool’s home clash with Spurs on Sunday:

United 1 Real Madrid 2
Given the importance of last night’s game, Sir Alex Ferguson’s defensive selection was perhaps an indication of his first-choice back-four. Having returned to the side for last weekend’s home win over Norwich, Jonny Evans dropped out, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic again the preferred partnership. Despite being lauded as a key member of the United starting XI only a matter of weeks ago by his manager, the Northern Ireland international has now started just one of the last four in all competitions and with one less trophy to play for, his owners will be concerned over his game time in the league, with even less rotation required amongst Ferguson’s backline now.

The main talking point prior to kick-off was, of course, the omission of Wayne Rooney from the starting line-up. Ferguson, however, went to great lengths to explain his decision was down to Rooney’s lack of fitness after a recent sinus problem, with Danny Welbeck getting the nod due to a specific tactical game plan. The former Everton man had returned to the first XI in Saturday’s win over the Canaries but had played just 30 minutes in the previous two games – a significant factor in his manager’s thinking, with Ferguson already on record as saying Rooney needs a run of games before reaching full fitness.

“It is one of these situations where we regard the qualities of Real Madrid with Xabi Alonso as controller of the team. Young Shinji Kagawa found it hard to do that defensive job in the first leg. Danny Welbeck is the best in our team at that, and that is the reason I have selected him. Wayne Rooney needs a game or two. He did well in the second half against Norwich, but he looked like he needed a game. He probably will come on in the second half and win the game for us!”

From a Fantasy perspective, United’s exit will also ease the likelihood of rest and rotation throughout the side as Ferguson looks to build on a 12 point gap over City in his bid to secure the title – the worry for Robin Van Persie’s owners was that, if United progressed to the latter stages of the Champions League, the Dutchman would be rested during the league program. That scenario has now been eliminated with Ferguson now perhaps set to give Van Persie the platform to score the goals that will see him earn the Golden Boot in his first season at Old Trafford.

Last night’s result will hopefully speed up the rescheduling of United’s league trip to West Ham, which was due to take place this weekend but has been cancelled due to FA Cup commitments – with more free midweeks in their calendar, we’ll hopefully soon learn of a new date, with many still crossing their fingers that the match could be moved to next midweek and stay within the confines of Gameweek 29.

In other news…
Alan Pardew could well be willing to hand Hatem Ben Arfa some part in Newcastle’s Europa League tie in Russia on Thursday. The Magpies face a first leg tie with Anzhi Makhachkala, with Ben Arfa now close to a return. The Frenchman has recovered from injury but is, according to Alan Pardew, some way short of match fitness…

“I think he has got a chance. We wanted to put some work into him. He’s a little bit short, so whether he gets 20 or 30 minutes towards the end of that game, I don’t know. That’s probably the most he could get. We’ll see how he shapes up. He worked all weekend – hopefully, we’ll get him even closer.”

Ben Arfa’s return to the fray could prove significant for those considering Newcastle’s attacking assets in the coming weeks. While the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse look secure, they would surely benefit from Ben Arfa’s creative contribution from the flank. There is no suggestion that Sissoko will have his role, up in support of Cisse, changed when Ben Arfa is fit, having proved so effective in recent weeks. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Swansea was the first time in five games that Sissoko has failed to return a goal or an assist since his arrival in England.

Arsene Wenger’s options look set to be boosted by the return to fitness of Kieran Gibbs according to reports. Gibbs is set for a return to full training and could be in the frame to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week. Gibbs’ return would give Wenger a selection headache at left-back, with Nacho Monreal currently in the role. The Spaniard has impressed whilst Gibbs has been sidelined and it’s perhaps not cut-and-dry that the England man will make an immediate return to the Gunners lineup.

Southampton look set to be able to call on captain Adam Lallana for the trip to Norwich at the weekend. The midfielder returned to action against Newcastle a fortnight ago, after a two-month absence, only to be forced off after a clash of heads with Clint Hill against QPR on Saturday. Lallana’s recent return proved the catalyst for a shuffle in the Saints’ midfield, with both Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis dropped to the bench on Saturday to make way, as Gaston Ramirez and Jason Puncheon were recalled after being benched in the defeat to Newcastle. With Lallana set to be in contention, Mauricio Pochettino could well keep an unchanged starting lineup for the Carrow Road clash although Puncheon’s owners will still have some concern over his security of start given the teamsheet on the previous away trip.

Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy owners will be relieved to hear the Liverpool forward is expected to be fit for Sunday’s home clash with Tottenham. Having missed two of the last three matches due to a thigh complaint, Sturridge’s fitness has been a growing issue in recent weeks – despite his relatively kind price tag across the Fantasy games, the uncertainty over his game time means his appeal has taken a real dent. Over 52,000 FPL managers have already snapped up Luis Suarez after his hat-trick against Wigan on Saturday evening but the Uruguayan is likely to return to the support role this weekend, with Sturridge once again afforded the chance to lead the line – all the more crucial for his owners, given there are currently just six fixtures scheduled to take place. A move back to 4-2-3-1 from the weekend 4-3-3 looks the likeliest scenario, with Philippe Coutinho and Stewart Downing retaining their places on the flanks on either side of Suarez. Although Sturridge is set to return to training today, Brendan Rodgers looks set to be without Martin Skrtel again – the centre-half remains sidelined with a knee problem.

Lost at the bottom of the last page. Hey lads, this is my 7 man team for the
    Gameweek as it stands:

    Federici, (Bunn),
    Harte, Davies,
    Bale, Michu,
    Suarez, Fletcher.

Players out: RVP, Mata, Walcott, Zabaleta,
Guthrie, Demel, Bertrand. (0 in the bank)

What do you think I should do? I’m
thinking of taking a 4 pt. hit and playing
with 9 men. Mata -> Sissoko and maybe
    Guthrie -> Puncheon? Thoughts? Thanks
    for any help. 🙂

Ditch Guthrie and Bertrand, or maybe just Bertrand, not sure what the status on Guthrie is but Bertrand is highly unlikely to see many minutes the rest of the season. Bert -> Wilson maybe?

Mata does suffer from fatigue...we saw it at the start of the season. I have no doubt he will score highly again, but he is clearly in a slump. He is also worse at home and with three home games in the next four I think he's dumpable for that period.

I´m a big fan of both clubs but

Mourinho has a massive respect for SAF and Utd. he completed his belief that they should´ve lose the game by saying that Diego Lopez was their best player. And he was.

He then added that if there wasn´t a red card they would lose the game in the same way he lost 2 years ago for Barcelona with the Pepe red card(I know he is a massive pr*ck but that one was genuinely fake from Dani Alves).

I could had the RvP one against Barca... but that would be going too far... 😉

I actually agree, Nani gave the ref a decision to make, plus always he did follow through after the ball had gone which was avoidable. A much finer call than people are saying. And the fact that Nani lay on the ground didn't help him.

      Yes IMO

Looked up the FIFA rulebook and it seems fairly clear, under "Serious Foul Play"

"A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as
      serious foul play"

      and

      "The referee must send
off the player guilty of serious foul play when the ball is next out of play"

It's arguable whether or not it was a tackle, but it's hard to argue it wasn't endangering the safety of another player.

So, in Nani's case, it is completely an issue of bad luck then? Wrong place, wrong time.

He raised his foot to bring the ball down, as he, and other agile players do, and didn't even see Arbeloa until it was too late.

So if a striker goes for an overhead kick in the box, a defender closes him down, and he accidentally kicks him in the head, is this also a red card?

You then get into whether or not Nani knew Arbeloa was closing in, and in real time that's a very tough call for anyone to make. Bubs has explained it better than me below 🙂

In slow motion, he carried his foot through when he felt contact with the other player, which was avoidable, the ball was long gone. The fact that he lay on the ground for so long, uninjured indicates that he was concerned.

Yeah, this is the problem, I'd guess that if you look up the rules you could definitely find support for the decisions. I'm not sure intent factors into it, if you look at it from a rulebook point of view.

That said, looking at the replays I was suprised he gave the red in that situation.

As I said earlier, I think it was a bit harsh, but if you put your foot up 4-5 feet in the air, studs out, you need to look where it's going. So can certainly see why it was given.

But let's not forget Real had a perfectly good goal disallowed in the first-half, and Rafael cleared one off the line with his arm too. Tbh, the Nani red probably wasn't the worst decision in the game.

See above but those with membership ought to try out comparing players for all games versus performance over the last four to get a really accurate picture of whether they are performing well or regressing.

I've done it for Mata, RVP, Rooney and Fellaini and the results have really helped make my mind up about some key moves in my team.

One or two big names have to go this week to field a decent side. It is also an opportunity to look at some big name players. Points regression is common in the second half of the season and I'm keen not to miss out on the up an coming form players.

It sounds very enlightening and I'll have a go at it. Is there a possibility though that rather than regression we might be seeing just a poor spell of form or some below average performances over a difficult fixture period?

I think once you have the stats for the last 4 games, you need to look at those last 4 games too just to get a full picture.

One of the best articles last season was Chris Glover's look at second half of the season performance. In the seasons and top performing first half of the season players he looked at pretty much only Baines performed better during the second half.

Bale so far is obviously this season's exception. There are exceptions, but the norm is that if a player was great between Aug and Jan ish then the liklihood is that they will be less great for the remaining months.

We are already seeing it with Mata and RVP.

Are there better alternatives to them. Is Rooney a viable option for example? These are key questions that will determine whether we rise and fall in our mini leagues over the coming weeks.

Stats are great but helps if you watch the games / highlights too. GJ is a great example, his shots per game is quite high but then if you watch him he hits lots of speculative shots from 20+yards that aren't even close to threatening the target.

That said, I'm keeping. With good fixtures coming up, I'm hoping his form will come back.

Mata really isn't worth getting rid of unless there is a DGW for a big team. I know the amount of shots he takes( and on target etc.) are incredibly low but you just have to watch him play to make your mind up.

His stats in january were pretty awful but still managed some big scores

I've got XI anyway but including Puncheon who might not start. Anyone think it would be a good idea?

I've ditched already and may get him back...but I think with defences tightening I'd like to spread his love. Not sure yet. I have two frees this week so may indeed just get him back...should only cost me 0.3 by then. Worth it to get Suarez in.

Hmm. I've got Suarez and Benteke already so just whether Remy or anyone else is worth a punt. Tempted to keep and be better prepared for dgw or injury.

Bad idea and you know it deep down. Move on to other areas of your team.
The time to do that trade was last GW for Suarez... like I did!

Unless of course you want Rooney instead in which case you could do RVP > Remy > Rooney.

Have 9 players playing..benched Mata Fellaini and Clichy. Pog and Bertrand not gona play so is it worth a 4 pointer to replace one of them?

I'd say Bertrand is worth -4, unless Cole gets injured he's unlikely to see many minutes from now and until the end of the season. Maybe for Wilson/QPR/Norwich..

I'd say A), but monitor the Rooney situation. I think it's blown out of proportions and that he's just a little shy of match fitness.

Tabloid radio, wouldn't pay too much attention. Rooney dropped yesterday = must be on his way out of the club...

Too risky for me, but could work out great if we go all the way in Europa and Torres keeps playing at his current level.

All this talk of dont sell Mata, dont sell Fellani, dont get rid of the blank players this week they have great fixtures and a imminent DGW. I understand all the logic in this, but what the hell are you supposed to do then field 8, 7, 6 players this week? get a red arrow then hope the week after you claw the points back? I saved my transfer last week knowing I would need it to get a team out the following week. My team as it stands looks like this

    Bunn
    Harte - Davies - Johnson
    Bale - Michu - Puncheon
    Lambert

    Begovic - RVP - Podolski - Mata - Walcott - Demel - Zabaleta

I have 1 million in the bank so my plan was to do Podolski > Suarez and to fund it Mata>Sissoko. Leaves me with 1.8 million to play with. Can anyone suggest two better transfer than this?

    Thanks.

Id love to keep Mata, but somethings got to give. The only other option is opt for Sturridge, but I dont want that headache again. I can always drop Sissoko if Chelsea hit form over their good fixtures and take Oscar/Lampard.

My thinking this GW is don't get rid of someone you want back in the near future. In my case this is Mata Walcott Zab (already did RVP -> Suarez). I'm ditching Fellaini because of his fixtures. Remember that all these players have DGWs coming up.

The transfers you suggested sound decent considering Suarez' form and fixtures. I don't like the thought of ditching Mata but it might be the lesser of evils.

I would of considered losing RVP if they had gone through last night. Id of ditched Fellani in front of Mata too if I had him.

Yeah, I took a gamble and lost him last GW for Suarez (c), so it paid off but could cause problems in the future. Hard to predict how they will pick first XIs, I can't see Hernandez not getting any gametime at all...

Yeah, Fellaini is going on Friday/Saturday (... for Bale).

well that transfer makes sense, amazing what you can do without RVP to your team, I think Im one of the few left with him in my mini league now.

My theory for Mata decline is down to the fact when BA plays they play too much long ball like Newcastle use to do & if u look at the goal Ba scored it wasn't pretty football

You can see MAta scores better points when playing with Torres i know there isn't alot games to base this on but thats my humble opinion

    Anyone else agree?

Not sure I agree completely, we mixed it up a lot when playing with Torres too, i.e some long balls and some click-clack passes. He just seems to be playing deeper lately, with Oscar and Hazard being the more forward players.

Anyone contemplating no Rooney or RVP until their double?

I have a strike force of Suarez Sturridge and Cisse and would like to keep the Pool pair for the next 5. Not having a Utd striker would allow me to spend my funds on DGW players, I'm not likely to captain either Utd striker bar the Reading game for the next 5 and was thinking Cisse > Giroud could equal their points and allow me to upgrade Sissoko > Cazorla rather than losing Bale.

Cisse Giroud wig RDG wba NOR EVE
RVP Rooney RDG sun MCI sto
