Papiss Cisse is ruled out of Newcastle’s trip to Anzhi due to a virus, though Hatem Ben Arfa is expected to feature for the Magpies. Jermain Defoe looks set to replace Emmanuel Adebayor up top for Tottenham’s trip to Inter, Victor Moses and Ramirez are left out of Chelsea’s Europa League squad to face Steaua Bucharest, while Steve Clarke is hopeful a number of players can shake off minor injuries for West Brom’s home clash with Swansea:

Alan Pardew has confirmed Papiss Cisse has been omitted from Newcastle’s Europa League squad for tonight’s match against Anzhi due to illness. Speaking to the club’s official website yesterday, the Magpies boss revealed:

“Papiss has been sick since Sunday, so myself and the doctor went to see him this morning to see whether we felt he could travel – with me definitely thinking he could. But he didn’t look well, to be honest, so we’ve had to leave him behind unfortunately.”

Cisse has already risen in price in FPL this week, with more than 8,000 managers snapping him up ahead of a crucial home clash with Stoke. Pardew is a little short in striking options right now – he admitted he was somewhat reluctant to take Shola Ameobi to Russia and is concerned the playing conditions could prove problematic to the player’s long-term knee complaint. Ameobi looks in pole position to lead the line against the Potters should Cisse fail to make it, while Hatem Ben Arfa is edging his way back into contention – Pardew confirmed the Frenchman is set to play some part in this evening’s match after hamstring and fitness issues.

Rafa Benitez has decided to omit both Victor Moses and Ramires from Chelsea’s squad to face Steaua Bucharest tonight. Moses has made just two brief sub appearances in the league since helping Nigeria to the African Cup of Nations last month, while Ramires has proven a key member of Benitez’s starting XI, playing 90 minutes in all but one of the last 10 Gameweeks. Yossi Benayoun is back in the squad after a brief ankle problem and could play a part, with Benitez expected to make plenty alterations ahead of the weekend FA Cup Sixth Round clash against United. Demba Ba is, of course, ineligible this evening, having played for Newcastle in the same competition earlier this season and looks likely to edge out Fernando Torres for Sunday afternoon’s trip to Old Trafford.

Jermain Defoe is expected to return to the Tottenham starting line-up for this evening’s Europa League trip to Inter. Reports indicate that Emmanuel Adebayor is thought to only have a “slight chance” of recovering in time from the knee problem that forced him off against Arsenal last Sunday and, while the Togo international should be fit for this weekend’s trip to Liverpool, the San Siro clash could come too soon. Having only just recovered from a recent ankle injury, Defoe looks likely to lead the line for the in-form north London outfit, while Andre Villas-Boas is also set to welcome Mousa Dembele back – the Belgian has recovered from the knee issue sustained against the Gunners and has returned to full training.

Steve Clarke rolled out a substantial injury update yesterday ahead of West Brom’s weekend home game against Swansea. The Baggies boss admitted that, while a handful of his first-team regulars have struggled to train this week, he is confident the situation will have eased off by Saturday:

“Claudio (Yacob) has a knock, hasn’t trained, but should be okay. Steven Reid has a knock, hasn’t trained this week, but he should also be okay. Jonas (Olsson) didn’t train on Monday but trained yesterday and Youssouf Mulumbu had a migraine but he’s fine now. Hopefully everyone will be fine tomorrow.”

Clarke also went on to reveal that Chris Brunt and Shane Long both sustained twisted ankles in the past week. While Long is now “okay” after picking up the problem in last Saturday’s narrow defeat at Chelsea, Brunt – who missed the Stamford Bridge match altogether with the complaint – remains a real doubt; he attempted to return to training earlier in the week but was forced out after the problem played up again.

Brian McDermott rolled out an injury update first thing this morning. The Reading boss has revealed Adam Federici will remain sidelined with the ankle problem that kept him out of last weekend’s trip to Everton – a bitter blow for the Australian’s 5% FPL owners, with some likely to be without a keeper in light of the reduced fixture schedule. Stuart Taylor is set to step in for the Royals, with Alex McCarthy still not ready to return from a shoulder injury. McDermott also admitted Jimmy Kebe remains a doubt with the groin injury that forced him off at Goodison last time out.

Is it just me or does it look like Chelsea's long arduous season is taking it's toll on Mata?

Why is this unusual. We knew about these missing matches long ago and most teams I see have every chance of putting out a full team.

I've currently got 9 but with 2FT should be able to field 11 as long as one of my GK recovers.

Last I heard an injury. I think you have to hold if you can as he is a 5th midfielder you could potentially leave and ignore for the remainder of the season.

Then use F/T to switch the 4 mids and 3 forwards around.

    Bunn
    Davies Pearce ?Cuellar?
    Bale Michu Sissoko Puncheon
    Suarez(C) Cisse

Cesar - Rooney, Walcott, Zabaleta, Evans

Worth a hit for Benteke? He would need to score or assist once to make it pay off for this week. Then again, i would want Rooney for next week.

Why wouldn't you try to field 11? It seems that the DGW are still up in the air but you'd have time to plan for the DGW. I personally don't have a problem with a DGW because I still have a WC but I'm confused that some many are not using their FT this week to get a full team.

Currently have 8 players available for this week - Bunn, Shaw, B.Davies, Michu, Puncheon, Bale, Lambert & Sturridge.

Unavailable - Zabaleta, Rafael, Distin, Mata, Theo, RVP. I have 1.7m in the bank & 1FT.

I'm thinking of doing: Mata > Sissoko & RVP > Suarez or Benteke.

    Thoughts?

Two part question if you would be so kind as to help.
    A) Aguero > Suarez looks like a no brainer but if I did Aguero > Remy I could then do Lukaku > RVP or Rooney the week after, is the Suarez option still better?

    B) Aguero is on his way out one way or another which still only leaves me with 9. Would you take a hit to do any of the following
    1) Chezney > Reina
    2) Nicholls > Elliot
    3) Mata > Sissoko

Sorry that's a bit long winded but I'm a tad flummoxed.

I see, well that is certainly gambling on Rooney being the one to get and I can see your predicament.

I guess you have to ask yourself how much of a no brainer is getting Suarez this week really? Have you got Sturridge? What about him as an alternative to keep your options open?

It's a really tough problem to deny yourself of RVP later on...I'm afraid as much as I can advise you it's really about what your gut tells you. Personally I am hoping Rooney is also a great alternative (as he has been when fit) but that said I am not as financially restricted as yourself as I can get RVP back quite easily at the minute.

Any more thoughts on your gut feeling?

I think the Suarez option is better. You know he's too explosive.

Mata to Sissoko looks it for a hit. Mata's stats are a worrying, and Granville spotted it quite a while back. But you'd get Lamps in then right?

    Afternoon everyone

I can make 9 or 10 for this weekend but wondering if I should get rid of the mighty Guthrie for either:

    1. Siss,
    2. Sess
    3. Coutinho

    Rest of team:
    Bego (Fed)
Marippa, Wilson, Martin R (Zab, O'Brien)
    Michu, Gurthrie, Bale (walcott, Mata)
    Lambert, Suarez, Benteke

This would be a 4ph but I think someone like Siss would be a keeper. The following week hopefully i can get RVP in with mata swapping for Oscar.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

When are we expecting Chelsea's DGW to be rescheduled? If it's rescheduled for the midweek of GW33 (likely, no?) and they progress through the FA cup this weekend at United's expense, won't that mean that the Chelsea -Spurs tie would be postponed for a future GW (much like the Everton - QPR game would be postponed if Everton overcome Wigan in the FA cup).

In other words, if Chelsea win against United at the weekend, Spurs might not have a GW33 fixture.

Sorry if I'm a bit behind, been busy 😛

I wouldn't sell Bale anyway but it would mean benching him and therefore needing a strong 8th attacker. If Maloney has his DGW then, that would be convenient.

I'm finding it hard to look past Lukaku as a one week punt. Lambert is the other one that intrigues me as he is proven but I noticed Rodriguez absolutely obliterated him with his shots total against QPR and he only played half the game.

I understand though the perks of Lambert and wouldn't judge him on that one game. But Lukaku is tempting me a little more because of home advantage. Lambert is better away from home but Norwich are a tough outfit at home. They've only really conceded more than 1 to the likes of City and Liverpool all season.

The other move I could potentially do is be boring and buy a defender (namely a Newcastle defender) but that seems so unbelievably boring in a GW where I am already fielding 4 defenders for a change.

    Thoughts greatly appreciated! 🙂

Yeah, I wouldn't do the defender move unless it's a long-term move you are keen to make. I have Lambert and I'm happy, but not sure I'd bring him in now from a long-term fixture standpoint (when DGWs start to kick in there are other people, such as Berb, I might want in his place) so you might as well go for who lights your fire. Lukaku.

Add to that, the ownership of both the players. People really don't take him cause of his game time, but I'd take it. Really nice differential against Lambert, who's owned by more than 25% of managers in the game. I'll have Benteke too, just like you. Suarez, and we have the same front 3.
