Reading have this afternoon announced the departure of Brian McDermott following the 2-1 home defeat to Villa at the weekend. Reading have issued a statement on their site, in which they emphasise their keenness to appoint a replacement with some haste…

“The search for a successor will start immediately and it is hoped that a new Manager will be in place as soon as possible to lead the fight against potential relegation.”

Reading face a daunting trip to Man United this weekend and it remains to be seen if Russian owner Anton Zingarevich has a name lined up to take control in time for that particular visit. Paulo Di Canio and Nigel Adkins are two names currently occupying the bookies thinking.

While McDermott’s departure is perhaps harsh on a manager who gained them promotion and has battled this term with limited resources, Fantasy Managers will be quick to move on and we must now consider that Reading’s starting XI will be in flux from this point. McDermott had appeared to have settled on his preferred lineup and, until recently, had employed a 4-5-1 system with some regularity.

An upturn in fortunes will be anticipated, such is the expected effect of a new manager’s arrival and it’s also likely that we’ll see a shake-up in personnel. The back four, recognised as the worst in the Premier League on current form, is surely likely to see changes.

We may now see the likes of Sean Morrison, Danny Guthrie and Adam Le Fondre earn regular starts under a new regime and, with the potential for improved results, there could yet be value available in the Royals’ squad over the remaining Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You would take either scenario. Potential for both to score is greater than the other two imo. Davies CS less likely than Samba and Benteke more likely to score than Sissoko.

if you are talking about samba's goal threat then it's justified as chances of davies scoring is far too less.

Very strange timing for the whole McD thing, if you ask me.

If you count the next 2 games as a write off, which I don't think is too unfair to call them, then whoever comes in has 7 games to save them.

Assuming fixtures remain as they are
    A) Lukaku > Rooney (bench Puncheon)
    B) Puncheon > Chelsea mid (bench Lukaku)
    C) Go without Chelsea/Man U cover and bank a transfer.

2 FTs always give me a nice, warm feeling no matter how bad the previous GW was. In Mac's case, he's selling Lukaku ahead of playing a now leaky Pottery defence.

          Fear factor.

I'm having the same dilemma of going ahead with Lukaku to Rooney or not, would need funds though, possibly from a Baines downgrade, which I don't like the sound of, considering a DGW coming in soon. Then there's another one, whether to paly Lukaku or bench him for Sess. Quite a tough one this.

If you are going to sack your manager, make sure you do it early so you have some hope of staying up.

Otherwise no good managers will want to manage your team as they will inevitably be managing a championship team next season.

What timeframe are you talking? Rooney will definitely be rested at some point, maybe 2 or 3 times. There are two many strikers to keep happy and the league is too well wrapped up for that not to happen IMO. I think he'll be rested at least once in the next 4, one of sunderland or stoke.

Boiled my gameweek down into one hypothetical. Picture the scene...

You have a striker (Papiss C) you fancy scoring at least one goal against someone (Wigan have conceded 4 goals twice in their last 4 games) - but you weren't going to captain him (that would be either Suarez vs sou, or Mata vs WHAM) - would you spend your FT swapping him for a captaincy option (Rooney vs REA)?

Bearing in mind... it's short-term. I'm not in the 'Rooney or RVP til the end of the season' camp. Utd don't have another peach home fixture until Villa end of April, there will be rotation - and if they win the league early which they will, there will be the inevitable defeats and draws to soft opposition. So I'm planning: Cisse/Rooney > ARS striker GW31 (RDG, wba, NOR/EVE, ful)

    So:

    1. Cisse > Rooney(c)
    2. Save Transfer (could be useful with gaps/doubles)
    3. PUNT: Ramirez > Cleverly/Giggs

There it is with all it's fantasy nuances and layers - my GW30 dilemma. Any advice appreciated.

"Quattro is just the name of the automobile," the Scotsmen retorts in disbelief. "Look at the papers: this car is designed to carry five persons."

I think this sacking of McDermott smacks of Wolves sacking McCarthy last season.

        * No one lined up to take over
        * No window for a new manager to come in and improve the squad
        * Assistant manager who was from the same failed set up in the first place to come in and manage team
        * Fans already resigned to relegation
        * Players heads basically have already gone.
        * Sacking to late to really make a difference

If your first point is true then I agree, never see the point in sacking someone only to promote his assistant as there's no one else.

Personally I'd be surprised if there wasn't someone lined up and in place in time for Man U.

Wolves had Bruce lined up but they never got him.

At least when we sacked Hughes we knew already that Redknapp would take over. Reading will have their assistant manager in charge on Saturday.

Even if they got a new manager in now, as Reading fans on their forum are rightly saying, he will still have the same sad sack bunch of players to work with. A new man cannot be expected to come in with 9 games to go and turn things around.

Cortese showed how it should be done at Southampton.

Reading are as good as down bye bye.

People get blinded by sentiment no doubt Adkins was a nice guy but for me not Premier League standard.

              Same with McDermott unfortunately.

This is business too big business but they should have got shot sooner if they were going to do it now.

I believe we have a real chance now, yes.

            A number of reasons.

            1) Redknapp. At this stage do not underestimate the value of a good manager who can keep a calm head and help players keep a calm head too.

            2) Squad. Of all the teams down there, on paper we have the best. I've said on QPR sites all season that a team that can play Cesar, Samba, Hoilett, Taarabt, Bosingwa, Fabio, Zamora and now Remy has no business being bottom of the league.

            3) Been there before. We have been in this position before last season and we did what Wigan did and got out of it. That also counts for a lot. Some teams get sucked into the relegation pit and panic. Those re the ones that usually go down.

            4) Defence. I would take our defence over Reading, Villa, Wigan and Southampton's right now.

            5) Run-in. The kindest run in of all the relegation threatened teams and play all the teams around us in the run in. Best way to climb out of trouble is to win points whilst at the same time denying other teams the opportunity to gain any.

The Villa game this weekend is absolutely key. If we can get a result there then I think the momentum will definitely be with us.

              5. This is false, my good friend. You have a difficult run in, only Reading has worse. Imo.

Villa still to play Liv, MUFC and Chelsea.

Wigan look like Bolton last season. Great cup run and then a backlog of games in quick succession.

Reading look like they're gone regardless of the fixtures.

At this stage of the season its all about momentum. Teams that lose it at this stage are in trouble and teams that get it and maintain it usually stay up.

If we play like we did in the 2nd half against Sunderland I think we have a real chance of staying up.

Weekly benching dilemna, who to leave out this week?
        Hazard, Walcott, Sissoko, Sessegnon, Bale

Don't normally ask for help in detail, but teams in a right mess, bringing back RVP leaves me 1m short.

        Begovic, Cerny
        Harte, Shaw, Johnson, Davies, Demel
        Bale, Michu, Sissoko, Walcott, Mata
        RVP Lambert Suarez

        Which is best:
        a) Begovic for Elliot
        b) Lambert for cheap bench warmer and funds for upgrading Demel/Davies
        c) Sissoko for bench warmer and funds for upgrading Demel/Davies
        d) Michu for Penarse and have selection headache
        e) Rooney instead of RVP and save hit. High risk as leading cash ML by 150 and everyone else with (c) RVP.

I don't agree with Lambert > a cheap bench warmer such as Pog.

Lambert > Lukaku/Remy but you are going to need a good enough 3rd striker and 5th midfielder to get you through the weeks ahead.
