[sbu_large_image] Suspensions

A raft of weekend bookings saw as many as five Premier League protagonists clamber onto the Suspension Tightrope after receiving their ninth caution of the campaign. One more yellow for any of our quintet triggers an automatic two-match ban now – bearing in mind the curfew is up to and including the Sunday April 14 (Gameweek 33), there’s every chance at least a couple could succumb to suspension.

The five guilty parties are Marouane Fellaini, David Luiz, Gary Caldwell, Craig Gardner and Matthew Lowton, with the first two the obvious concern for Fantasy managers. With Everton looking forward to a double Gameweek 33 (QPR, ars), Fellaini will be a clear target for investment but, in order to avoid the ban, has to engineer four league matches without falling foul of the referee – a Gameweek 31 home clash with Stoke, where he comes face to face with Ryan Shawcross once again, is likely to test his temperament. The frustrating thing for those looking to draft him in for the double is that even if Fellaini manages to go the next three without receiving a yellow, a booking in the first match of the double (at home to QPR on Saturday April 13) would take him over the 10-card limit and leave him unavailable for the second match of the Gameweek, away to Arsenal three days later.

Luiz will potentially teeter on the Tightrope for five games. The Chelsea defender currently has four league games and an FA Cup Sixth Round replay against United also set to take place before Gameweek 33 – depending on the result of that match, he will subsequently have either three league fixtures and a Semi-Final on his agenda or four league games, should United knock the Blues out. There’s also the somewhat unlikely scenario of a sixth game, though. If Rafa Benitez’s side are knocked out of both the FA Cup and Europa League, the Premier League could theoretically reschedule their trip to Fulham, initially set for last weekend, to a date prior to Gameweek 33.

While Gardner, Lowton and Caldwell all have four games apiece before the deadline, the latter could have five matches to prevail. Wigan’s trip to City, initially scheduled for Gameweek 29, has yet to be given a new date – although both sides are through to the Semi-Finals, City’s lack of European action may yet see the match take place before Gameweek 33, affording both clubs a double and adding an extra fixture for Caldwell to navigate.

In terms of those already on the sidelines, both Pavel Pogrebnyak and Robert Huth are set to serve the last of their respective three-match bans for serious foul play and violent conduct respectively, this weekend. Villa’s Fabian Delph sits out the second of a two-match ban – he was the first player to break through the 10 card barrier earlier this month.

Rvp to score against reading gives you 2/5
Rooney to score against reading gives you 1/2

      First link:

      1) RVP and Rooney's key goal threat stats (per minute) are very similar. Not sure you could say either's are significantly better. If anything, RVPs are slightly better when you look purely at shots on target.

      3) Hopefully RVP's reduced game-time over the last few game will negate some of the fatigue he's suffering.

      Second link:

      Speculation.

Like I said, I'm an RVP owner and happy to hold. Those with neither will certainly see Rooney's lower price as the deciding factor.

On the last point. Yes if I'm an RvP holder, I'd be keeping him, and I can see why people will want him back. I sold RvP for Suarez. I'm not dismissing RvP by any means, merely stating why I personally will bring in Rooney now.

    @TheTinkerman

You say my argument is based on a poor foundation and badly framed but you don't even give a good reason why you think it is.

I framed it as the last 5 games because Rooney made his first start after his injury 5 games ago. And the foundation is, if you own neither RVP or Rooney right now, who is the correct buy and why?

That is the foundation. Stating that you own RVP currently and won't sell is irrelevant to the argument I'm making. If you own RVP of course you're probably not going to prioritise a RVP > Rooney transfer. That's a whole different thing altogether.

However, when you own NEITHER then things get interesting. And that's why the frame I gave it works (in my opinion) quite well. As it's a bit like saying, right I would like to buy a man utd striker for this strong fixture, how do I compare their form? Well I'll use the last 5 games because they have both been playing in that time. And you see that Rooney has scored 4 and assisted 2. And RVP has scored 1 and assisted 3. Ok that aint poor form from RVP...but what it's also telling me is 'Hey, Rooney aint a bad alternative AND he's cheaper'

Then I check the PPG over the entire season, which broadens the sample size. And Rooney is only behind RVP and Suarez for PPG, despite injury setbacks!

His rate of attacking returns in 16 starts is phenomenal. And the fact he shares shots with RVP makes it all the more remarkable.

So in conclusion, you can't argue that my framing is bad or my foundation is poor when the fact of the matter is all you want to say is 'I have RVP and won't sell'.

That is irrelevant to the argument as it's a different situation altogether!

    I rest my case.

I pointed out that I have RVP as a side-note. It has nothing to do with my argument.

      From my previous comments:

"My personal opinion is that, given the same game-time, they will score similarly well and I would be happy owning either."

"By the way I just ran the stats for GW24-28 and RVP had 2 more shots on target with slightly less game-time. Rooney managed more shots in the box though."

"So not only is your argument [that Rooney has clearly outperformed RVP] badly framed but based on poor foundations.

I wish you the best of luck with Rooney. I’ll be keeping RVP myself and will be hoping he can continue his good goal threat, which will hopefully convert into FPL returns."

Thing is, I haven't even begun on the value side of the argument, not to mention what it does for your team balance and the opportunities it offers you over having expensive RVP.

But anyway, I've watched the games and read the stats, I know RVP is still having shots and a threat, I'm just arguing for Rooney being an awesome alternative that saves you money to use in other areas. And it's not just on a whim, there is solid evidence to back up how much of a monster Rooney is in FPL.

It's just very easy if you own RVP to dismiss it off hand because you don't want that to be the case.

Anyway, if you had started with this argument, then there would have been none of this discussion! It's when you end up writing 5 or more paragraphs and confusing your argument with hypothetical situations that people get turned off. It was the way you framed your argument I took issue with.

But the framing was why it was interesting to me.

As I said below, if this was the first 5 games of the season, all eyes would be on Rooney because of that form, whereas right now it isn't because there is so much conservatism, people feel like going for the tried and trusted more than they would at the start of the season.

People's eyes aren't not on Rooney because of conservatism, but because a larger sample size is a better predictor of future success than 5 games. Over the course of the season, Rooney and RVP have been very close on a per minute basis. That is a much more convincing argument to me than the whole "LOOK AT THE LAST 5 GAMES!!!" Look at how many people sold Bale after a quiet first 5 weeks of the season. Same with Mata. Drawing conclusions based on a small sample size leads to errors.

But you do me an injustice. I have also stated many times that Rooney is behind only RVP and Suarez for PPG over the season. And his attacking returns exceed his number of starts, which tells you a lot about how effective he has been.

I wasn't saying LOOK AT THE LAST 5 GAMES but rather, look at the last 5 games and see how Rooney's form has been stronger and how we might all be looking at Rooney over RVP if this was the start of the season and there was less conservatism.

It just feels like you're trying to deceive people in your "Imagine This" posts, because you make no such reference to the full season PPG in those posts. Give the evidence, make your arguments, but don't overstate your case.

That said, I find you much less annoying than the "RVP is class, thus he will score more people."

cheers, I can understand why people find me annoying, I talk incessantly and excessively on the subject of FPL on here...

I didn't mean to deceive though. I meant only for people to imagine the scenario at the start of the season and how feelings would be different and biases would be less strong towards RVP perhaps.

By doing so I was trying to highlight how you might look at the RVP vs Rooney transfer more objectively. Instead of simply going, well RVP is top FPL points scorer so I must buy RVP!

It's a good case to go for Rooney, I admit. Based on the last 5 weeks, he has outperformed RVP.

However, it's a little unfair to judge RVP on his last 5 games, as they have not been anywhere near his best of the season. But still, if you're going with form, Rooney is the man.

I still have my issues with going with Rooney over RVP though, I think Rooney can be frustrating to own as an attacking player, as he often ends up playing so deep. I'd still back RVP to outscore Rooney between now and GW38, but I wouldn't bet that it's by a lot.

cheers again, the point was simply...if it were the first 5 games then there would be Rooney fever. But because most have had or still own RVP all season it feels like a dangerous move. But it's only because we are at this point in the season that people are reluctant to take risks. And as a result there is barely any interest in him on these boards, which seems strange and unfair.

Hmm, I guess I understand better having read this. You weren't using the 5 weeks to recommend Rooney, but to show that we would prefer him if situations are different. But I'm afraid it's just apples and oranges. The whole season counts and your exercise sort of ignores that.

The price difference allows me to have Suarez and some change to play the doubles (City, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal = expensive targets) my team value is lower than most too.
Also I've been thinking all season Rvp seemed a better option when Rooney doesn't play. Rooney being a lot fresher is also a small factor.
Main thing at the end of the day though is I reckon shrek can go close to matching his scores at least. Maybe even better them.

Nice, good lad. Sturridge has been my Suarez replacement for a few weeks and this is why my rank has gone to pot. Now I'm hoping it turns around. I would have to get rid of one of Mata, Walcott or Michu though - got to be Michu. And I can't do anything big without knowing about these DGWs. Nightmare

Sturridge owners have been a tad unlucky over the last two.

Coming out of the DGW and into the blank, the evidence suggested he would match Suarez in value at least (if not in returns).

He missed out on the rout vs. Wigan and matched Suarez in terms of raw goal threat vs. Spurs and has ended up with two points to Suarez's 29. I wonder what would have happened had he started vs. Wigan.

I guess it's irrelevant now and we have to look at his potential for the next few. If he can keep matching Suarez's goal threat when on the pitch, I see no reason to change plans.

I can see why people would target Suarez over Sturridge now though and I'd probably do the same if I was looking to bring one in.

    Evening lads,

Not been on the site as much recently because the FFS community seems to have gone a bit http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=clique&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CDQQtwIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DFOrLNHbEzMg&ei=RHc-UamlF4K47AaFvIDQDw&usg=AFQjCNFuoc2BS7Vpjo0vkssAzaleO0Fzdw&bvm=bv.43287494,d.d2k

But am finding all the posts justifying Rooney over RVP bloody hilarious.

As someone who 'freed up funds' by selling Van Persie for Rooney back at the end of October, I did my own stat analysis to backup the move. Hell, back then Rooney was even on pens.

Don't try and convince everyone that Rooney is the better pick.. stick to convincing yourself. There's a reason you're looking at the past 5 games (wtf?) and that's because it's the only timeframe Rooney comes out on top in. The same argument was made about Sturridge (look at his stats..) before Suarez went and scored 4 goals and an assist in 2 games. The football fan picks the World Class player.

The long and short of it is you've transferred RVP out and now cant afford to get him back without taking a hit. Deal with it.

Ask yourself .. who would you trust captaining?

It's not just the last 5 games. It's across all games that they have played together in. Rooney comes out on top. Many people can afford to get either this week and are opting for Rooney, myself included.

Exactly, it's not people trying to justify Rooney over RVP because they can't afford him, it's simply people thinking 'well, wait a minute, Rooney aint a bad option is he? Now that I don't own either it's actually a tough decision between the two!'

And not only that, Rooney is coming out on top for goalscoring form, PPG and matching RVP in every department. And then the crucial point: VALUE

If Rooney allows you to get another more expensive mid for the DGWs then is he a bad choice? No in my opinion, Not at all!

Bizarre stat that considering RVP has 192 FPL points and Rooney has 119. Has anyone checked it or found it includes Van Persie coming on for the last 10 mins or something peculiar to skew the stats?

Fact is, Rooney may score well when you look over 5, 10, 15 games but he's explosive.. double points in a game then a run of twos. I know.. you'll captain him in hose games off the back of a brace away from home. Van Persie kills you with his consistent points returns. No real contest imo.

That's ridiculous, Rooney's been injured! And RVP's PPG drops when Rooney plays, the majority of those points was when he was alone up top. Also. He only has 1 goal in his last 6 games.

1 goal in 6 games where he's been injured and brought off early, come on as a sub, and started the Norwich game as a loosener to the Real Madrid game. I agree he hasn't looked as sharp recently but i dispute that his points returns are damaged by Rooney playing. Can that not simply be explained by RVP taking penalties when Rooney was not on the pitch? He now has penalty duties, leads the line, involved in direct FKs and corners and is the preferred captain choice of the two.

My only concern is Rooney will be out to prove a point. I hope that's primarily in the FA cup games.

It's actually a significant drop in points even excluding the last 5 so i don't think pens was the reason. Rooney also has corners and FKs. I'll gather all the stats again tomorrow, it was quite shocking, and with a decent sample size.

I never sold RVP. I think they have very simmilar potential for pts, but regarding rotation I give adventage to RVP to get more minutes because he's in a top scorer race.

Great post, TS. I agree with you 100%

I too dumped RVP (for 2 games) and I will get him back without a hit for this GW. Loss of 0.2m. I really like Rooney as a player in the real world. But in FPL it's RVP all the way til the end for me.

it's not just value, if you'd owned Rooney over RVP the last 5 games you'd be 10 points better off.

There are lots of angles, but honestly, it's a toss-up in my opinion. You gain some you lose some with either.

      Here's how I see it:

      Rooney
      + Value
      + Form/PPG
      - No pens
      - Fewer minutes
      - Match Fitness

      Van Persie
      + Gametime
      + Form over season
      + Golden Boot
      + Pens
      - Value
      - Fatigue
      - Poorer form (just)

If you think the Van Persie pros outweigh Rooney's. Pick him up. If not, get Rooney. There's no real right answer and it'd be silly for anyone to claim there is.

I have RVP because I held onto him. I don't see a compelling reason to switch.

He (RVP) has only looked fatigued because United have had their first major "blip" in the season. This happens. Surely all or most of us have played in a team that's been doing well and suddenly BANG the form goes. We all feel tired when we're losing and just want to go home and cuddle our teddy bears.
United will destroy Reading and VP will outscore Rooney by at least 2 to 1.
Rooney is finished at United. Deny it all you want, United fans, but he's on his way out.

Roll on the whole "bitter LFC fan" thing but I don't care. United the best team in England doesn't mean your fat little scouser is dead to Fergie. Dead.

Each of those points should be weighted, however, Giggsy. At this point in the season, value is much less of an issue while Suarez leading scorer becomes more crucial. RVP starts the next 9 out of 10 league games, Imo.
