Last summer, two of La Liga’s top 10 scorers of 2011/12 made their way to England’s top-flight. While Michu has already surpassed his Rayo Vallecano tally of 15 goals and earned a place in over 50% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams, Arouna Kone hasn’t quite had the same impact. The Ivorian’s firepower was crucial to surprise-package Levante – mirroring the Spaniard’s 15-goal haul, he helped his side to a sixth place finish and persuaded Roberto Martinez to splash the cash for Wigan:

Initially, Kone’s home performances looked particularly reassuring and suggested the Latics forward was well worth considering as a mid-price Fantasy prospect. With attacking returns in five of his first six starts at the DW, Kone racked up three goals and three assists over those fixtures but since then, he’s drawn blanks in the last five in front of his own fans as Martinez’s men drift back into the drop zone.

Conversely, while his home displays have slumped, Kone’s form on the road has risen remarkably. Striking a rich source of consistency on his travels, he has produced in each of his last four away starts, harvesting four goals and a pair of assists – inclusive are double figure returns against fellow strugglers Villa and Reading. Indeed, his performances have been so pivotal that even after a four-match break for African Cup of Nations duties, he still comfortably remains Wigan’s top scoring player in FPL, with 102 points; while Shaun Maloney is next best on 86 points, Kone’s markedly superior average of 4.2 ppg to 3.3 sums up his importance.

Having also produced a couple of goals and assist in two FA Cup appearances since returning from South Africa last month, the Ivorian is our Latics Watchlist candidate of choice ahead of a crucial run of fixtures. Buoyed by their weekend thrashing of Everton in the FA Cup Sixth Round, Martinez’s men welcome Newcastle and Norwich to the DW next before making their way to QPR.

In addition to a favourable next three fixtures, Wigan also have a double Gameweek on the horizon. The showdown with West Brom, which was due to take place on the weekend of Gameweek 33 but was cancelled due to cup commitments has been shifted to Gameweek 36, affording Martinez’s men a pair of fixtures, with a home game against Swansea also taking place that week.

With trips to West Ham and West Brom and a home clash with Villa also on his agenda between now and the end of the season, a price of 6.5 in FPL could well appeal to those eyeing up an alternative to the likes of Rickie Lambert, Christian Benteke and Romelu Lukaku in the same price bracket. Having produced eight strikes and five assists so far, the Ivorian has played a part in over half the goals Wigan have scored when he’s been on the pitch – clearly, if Martinez is to engineer his seasonal scramble up the table, Kone will be key.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Bunn (Szczesny)
    Clyne, Evra, Wilson (Davies, Harte)
    Mata(vc), Michu, Walcott, Bale (Gardner)
    Rooney(C), Suarez, Remy

    0 FT 4.8 in Bank

    A) Leave it as it is
    B) Suarez -> RVP for a hit
    C) Michu -> Lampard / Kagawa for a hit
    D) Davies -> Boyce for a hit and start Boyce instead of Clyne

    Anybody think Jenko might hold down the RB position for Arsenal for the near-future? Bargain at 4.0.

    But likewise, if Sagna is back, 4.7 for him is also a snip. Any Gooners care to offer any inside input?

      I would expect Sagna to play. Only doubt is if he is going to get sold in the summer, then the spot might be shared.

      Only guy who looks nailed on in Gunners defence right now is our BFG 🙂

    Repost.

    Hey guys, really need your help on this one..

    Do you think it’s worth it for me to do Davies –> Baines for a 4 pt hit?

    I know Baines have got City coming up and it’s unlikely he will keep a clean sheet but this transfer is for long term until at least the DGW 33. Also, I feel that it is time to lose Davies.

    Cheers! 🙂

      I wouldnt do it now. City's defence is good so you wont expect attacking points either. Perhaps vs Stoke is a better week for this move

        Thanks 🙂

        However, I've got a transfer in mind for next week already which I will have to do so if I put Baines in for the Stoke game it will be for a 4 pt hit anyway.

        I doubt Swansea will be able to keep a clean sheet against Arsenal and not expecting attacking points from Davies either.

        So is it essentially the same thing if I make the transfer now? Or should I still wait?

          I d wait. Perhaps next week you ll have other moves to consider. Either way, Arsenal played yesterday so I cant see them score more than once. But if your gut says to do it, do it and good luck. Personally I ve taken hits many times and about 60-70% were good moves.

      A hit for a defender is always tricky but if there's anyone who can pay you back it's Baines!

      I'd be concerned about Everton's form to be honest.

      Don't fancy doing it next week for free when Baines at least has a favourable fixture?

        I do fancy doing it next week but since it won't be for free anyway as I've got another transfer in mind should I just do it this week?

        It ultimately comes down to whether Baines will get more pts than Davies this gameweek right?

          Enrique for the rest of the season, Baines will give you nothing but 1 and 2 pointers for the next few weeks with the odd assist thrown in. He's a good shout, yes, but perhaps holding off will allow you to double up on Santi/Walcott for instance

        Everton have a DGW coming up before City though.. That's why I am leaning towards Baines.

        Poor for him (which is actually quite good), but this was mostly to do with the service, he wanted the ball played past him and more centrally than it was often given. Was substituted off for the OX after about 70 minutes.

    Prem GW30

    Everton v Man City

    Not traditionally high scoring, and with both sides possessing reasonably decent defences that isnt likely to change. However, Wigan rolled Everton over and Mucha will still be in goal for the Toffees. So potentially City could walk this, but Jags is back.

    I would cautiously buy a City attacker.

    Aston Villa v QPR

    Usually a draw this relegation battle is set for fireworks. I wouldnt expect a cleansheet, but both Remy and Benteke could potentially go crazy.

    I will probably stear clear of this match.

    Southampton v Liverpool

    Should realistically be another Liverpool steamroller with Suarez grabbing a hattrick. I cant really see any other outcome.

    Load up on the Pool

    Stoke City v West Brom

    A tight cagey affair, potential for a double cleansheet in a 0-0.

    Defender source for the weekend.

    Swansea v Arsenal

    If Vermaelen plays then Michu could have a field day. Howerver, bouyed by the Bayern match Arsenal may play with confidence and prowess.

    Michu is a must.

    Man Utd v Reading

    Well the billing is big here. Rooney, RVP and Kagawa should all come home with big hauls, and Evra/Rafael/Evans should get cleansheets.

    Load up on United.

    Sunderland v Norwich

    Should be tight as Norwich have tightened since their 3-0 loss in this fixture last year.

    Definite defender source this weekend

    Tottenham v Fulham

    Fulham are away and only just starting to get their legs back. Bale and co should grab a fair few.

    Load up on Spurs.

    Chelsea v West Ham

    West Ham won the reverse leg 3-1, but since then their form has dropped and this time they are away from home. Lampard should get a cheeky goal as per usual.

    Get Lampard and avoid all rafatation.

    Wigan v Newcastle

    Curious match here, the toon are back on the tyne and Wigan just smashed Everton. As a result I expect a lot of goals combined with attrocious defending.

    Get some attackers from both teams.

    Well there is my prediction for the weekend, written mainly so I can sort out my Totelfootball team.

      Unless you are confident the entire Arsenal defence will be changed, I can't see that your comment about Michu is necessarily correct; although I do acknowledge that Swansea, and Michu in particular, have a very good record against Arsenal.

      I'd say this will be low scoring.

    I have 6.2 to spend on a defender if I bin McAuley, 5.4 if I bin Davies.

    Thinking Rafael is the obvious choice, but I fear he'll get rested for RDG after SAF's comments about him being 'knackered' after the FA cup game.

    What would you do?

    DDG - elliot

    Cuellar - Clyne - Harte - Wilson - Turner

    Michu - Mata - Bale - Walcott - Sissoko

    Remy - Cisse - Benteke

    1) Cuellar -> Mertesacker (other dgw33 defender)

    2) Cisse -> RVP (C)

    3) Cuellar + Cisse -> RVP (C) + Mertesacker + (-4)

          I'd of thought risk reward would favour Carzola over a Baines acquisiition. As Baines without clean sheets is just another mid in a team with poor form with very little to play for.

          For Arsenal this top 4 place is do or die as they need Champions League footy to attract players in the summer.

    Here is a question.

    Is it true that teams 'fighting for their lives' in the relegation battle actually do any better, or at least tighten up? That could easily be a myth. Unless you're Wigan, then it's true.

      More attacking-ness (great word) I always feel attacking defenders (Samba) are going to be launched forward more regularly from now on.

      Also if teams go down in a game early they are going to commit forward more, so more likely to get more chances for strikers... i might have a look at the stats from last season to see if it really translates

      tighten up would probably be the wrong words to use, but the desire for results becomes so strong that teams can really push themselves to outperform their previous form in order to cling to their premier league status. And conceding less might just be a symptom of this extra push.

        This all makes sense, but I'm unsure if this actually really happens more often than by the rate any team just randomly finds form during the season

      Do better, yes, tighten up, no

      But its arguable how much is them and how is the opposition not giving a shit

        Yeah, this too, teams tend to have less to play for so allow shite teams to walk over them

      Don't think it's a myth. But it's usually restricted to, say, one team every two seasons who actually do very well.

      Are you looking forward to being "Jonty'd"?

        Yeah, should be fun

        I might have to go and look at the stats myself too, because teams can find form at any stage of the season and in my memory it's not overly often that the team in last and second last at this stage of the season actually manage to survive.
