Wales boss Chris Coleman is hopeful Gareth Bale can recover from a virus in time to face Scotland this evening. Oscar is amongst the goals as Brazil share the spoils with Italy. Arsene Wenger heaps praise on Laurent Koscielny’s recent displays, Daniel Sturridge’s ongoing thigh problem is causing concern again, Fabricio Coloccini could be back soon for Newcastle, while Steve Clarke has hinted Markus Rosenberg may get more game time for West Brom over the remainder of the season:

Chris Coleman has revealed Gareth Bale has been struggling with illness ahead of Wales’ game with Scotland this evening. Speaking to the press prior to the World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park, the Wales boss remained optimistic of the winger’s availability but admitted he won’t take any chances:

”He had a bit of a virus on Tuesday and Wednesday, so we couldn’t do any sessions with him. He just needed rest. He took a later flight as we wanted to separate him from the lads. If there’s any doubts about him physically and he’s not ready, we can’t take the risk with Gareth or any of the player. They don’t belong to us, they belong to the clubs. Unless they are 100% right we can’t take the risk and we won’t. At the minute we are optimistic he is going to be fine. He’s got a very good chance to play tomorrow. Speaking with the doctors and the medical team, they are happy with his response. He’s in good spirits, he’s better than yesterday. Hopefully he will be alright for tomorrow.”

Bale was initially feared to be a doubt after picking up an ankle problem in Tottenham’s home loss to Fulham last Sunday but seems to have least recovered from that complaint. Having scored all of his nation’s three goals in qualifying so far, Coleman will be desperate for his star player to make it in time – Wales are already seven points behind Belgium and Croatia after four games and a win for the hosts this evening would all but end their slim hopes. Bale also has a home clash with Croatia on his agenda for Tuesday evening before a return to domestic duties the following Saturday takes him back to his native country as Spurs make their way to Swansea.

Italy 2 Brazil 2
Luiz Felipe Scolari named a trio of Premier League players in his starting line-up last night. Chelsea duo Oscar and David Luiz were joined by Julio Cesar for the trip to Italy, though Blues midfielder Ramires missed out with an adductor problem picked up in Sunday’s win over West Ham. The latter two lasted the full 90, while Oscar was subbed off just after the hour mark, having impressed once again – he grabbed Brazil’s second, three minutes before the break.

Arsene Wenger has lavished praise on Laurent Koscielny after the centre-half’s eye-catching return to the Arsenal first XI. The Frenchman helped his side to a 2-0 win at Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week and kept his place as the Gunners registered a similar scoreline at Swansea in the league on Saturday afternoon – his manager reckons Koscielny has only now recovered from a calf problem that has been plaguing him since last summer:

“He was extraordinary in Munich.. He showed a little more authority than usual and, when he plays with that state of mind, you can see he has exceptional qualities. He needs that authority in his game to express himself completely….He says he was troubled during his [pre-season] preparations. At the time of our last [pre-season] game, against Cologne, he had a calf injury. It took him a very long time to return. And after that he had many relapses and it was often bad.”

With a goal also thrown in for good measure at the Allianz Arena, Koscielny has certainly staked a strong claim for his continued inclusion at the expense of Thomas Vermaelen alongside Per Mertesacker in the heart of the back-four. Judging by Wenger’s comments, he looks perfectly placed to retain his starting berth ahead of a home clash against Reading next weekend and with a double Gameweek 33 also on the horizon, his potential suitors will perhaps be a little more confident of investing in the 5.3 priced FPL defender on the back of the Arsenal manager’s praise.

Jonas Gutierrez is optimistic Fabricio Coloccini could be closing in on a return to action. The Newcastle skipper returned to his native Argentina in a bid to aid his recovery from a back problem and, speaking ahead of the club’s inaugural Hall of Fame dinner, the Gutierrez revealed a little inside knowledge on his compatriot’s progress:

““When he got the injury, they said six to eight weeks only. When you talk about Colo, we know he can do it quicker. He always does the right things, and he doesn’t have any problems, so we will see him soon. I spoke with him, and he’s feeling better. It is a long-term injury of about a month or so. Therefore it was going to be hard to bring him back in the condition that he left. We know what type of professional he is, and we understand he can’t come back and just play a little bit. We all want him back to play full games. We want him back as quickly as possible, because he’s really important for us.”

Subbed off at half-time in the Gameweek 27 win over Southampton, Coloccini has failed to feature since with his absence affording Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa a chance to strike up a partnership with Steven Taylor in the heart of defence. With Tim Krul still injured and doubts over Mathieu Debuchy and Davide Santon, Taylor’s side could be rolling up to the Etihad in Gameweek 31 with just a single first-choice option at the back (Taylor) in the XI. With three home games in four to follow (FUL, SUN, LIV), the Magpies boss will be pinning his hopes of survival on his side’s St James’ Park form, with the Tyneside team having won three successive games in front of their own fans.

Reports suggest Daniel Sturridge’s thigh complaint is playing up again. The forward was believed to have undergone a scan on the problem ahead of England training last night – once again causing concern for his Fantasy owners. Sturridge has missed two of Liverpool’s last five due to the problem and with Brendan Rodgers happy to court caution over the situation, any potential issue may bring his game time for the Reds’ trip to Villa a week on Sunday into question. With Luis Suarez a single caution away from a two-game ban, though, Rodgers may be more reliant than ever on Sturridge should the Uruguayan receive a yellow over his next three matches.

Phil Jagielka has revealed Marouane Fellaini has been suffering with an ankle injury of late:

“He had a painful ankle problem before the City game and he could have milked it and missed the game before disappearing off on international week. But he was desperate to play. He strapped himself up and put in a great performance. You cannot question his commitment.”

The midfielder has come in for some criticism in recent matches and after an outstanding first half of the season, has found the net in just two of his last 11 league appearances. Having received his tenth caution of the campaign against City, he’s now set to sit out the next two and has been resultantly sold by over 71,000 FPL managers. After the upcoming internationals with Belgium, Fellaini has three weeks until he’s available for domestic duties again, affording him plenty time to rest and recuperate before the Toffees double Gameweek 33, which sees them host QPR before travelling to Arsenal.

Steve Clarke has admitted he sympathises with Markus Rosenberg after the striker has cut a peripheral figure in his debut season at West Brom:

“The form of others has hindered him. Shane (Long) and Romelu (Lukaku) were in front of Markus for that spot and it made it more difficult for him to get in. The shape of the team and the way the team developed over the early weeks of the season was with one striker. It’s been a disappointing season for him….Markus is very disappointed things haven’t worked out for him so far. He hasn’t had enough minutes on the pitch. Some of that can be my fault and he can be unhappy with me….But there are still eight games to go and there is a little bit of me hoping in those eight games Markus gets the chance to play and shows everyone what he can do.”

The Swede arrived at the Hawthorns on the back of 10 goals in 33 appearances for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga last term but has been afforded next to no chance to make an impact. Clarke has handed him just two league starts all season, with five sub appearances totalling 54 minutes since the turn of the year but with Romelu Lukaku returning to parent club Chelsea at the end of the season and Peter Odemwingie falling foul of the club once again thanks to twitter comments, Rosenberg may finally see some game time before the season is out. Certainly, with the club flying high in eighth position, the threat of relegation is not an issue and it may well be that the Baggies boss uses the last few games to assess his forward options ahead of next term – Lukaku’s owners may be a little concerned if he chooses to do so.

I would never wish an injury on a player...but if Sagna was to announce he's taking a holiday for the rest of the season...I think I would jump for joy.

Jenkinson at 4.0m is just too perfect!

Jenkinson should be ahead of him anyway from what I have seen.

Apparently Sagna is off at the end of the season so if Wenger knows what he is doing he will play Jenkinson until the end of the season.

Cue Sagna coming back in for next premier league game!!!

I'd love if that was the case and Jenks was suddenly first choice. We should get an update on the Sagna injury next week. And I agree, Jenks has hardly done anything wrong this season apart from being a little inexperienced (the red card against Sunderland) Thanks for the reply!

Depends what you want. I just abandoned Windows Phone to come back to iPhone. Windows Phone has a lot going for it and in a lot of ways the basic, out of the box phone UI is better than iOS. Plus the Nokia hardware is very, very good.

But there are so few apps and the customer support is pants. And you can just about forget about getting updates to your phone OS, which is one great thing about Apple - they make every iOS update as backwards compatible as they can.

Replaced by Hazard, the watchlist usually only features the best picks from the team in question. I'm firmly in team Mata myself still, think he's having a very rough ride on here right now for no particular reason.

Mata is doing alright, just eclipsed by Hazard's form and points lately. Mata is an excellent pick, but if I was to choose now I'd go Hazard, if anything for the fact that he's been involved in EVERY single game this season (except his 3-game ban) while Mata has been rested more.

He's got a much stronger physique and engine than Mata, which speaks in his favor with the crazy fixture congestion coming up.

So which defences do we back for the rest of the season? And which defences do we think will tail off? I see no reason why United shouldn't continue to keep clean sheets myself, but behind that I'm a little bit worried.

Not completely sure about City for example. Their fixtures are a bit mixed but still fairly good, but they've tailed off a little bit lately in the defensive stats.

I'm actually considering downgrading myself from two big defenders to one, to fund a stronger midfield.

      Ugh, my defence is horrible...

5 4.0's at the back, Bunn and Szcesney...

If I was to back two, it would be City and United, pretty obvious, but still the safest options imo... Arsenal aren't a bad shout with those fixtures, and their more secure into the defence are cheaper than the Manchester clubs..

Haha! That might well be the cheapest defence I have ever seen 🙂

Yeah I've been looking at Arsenal too. They do look pretty good value for money, being much cheaper than defenders from most other big teams, but all with some rotation risk. I'd really like a piece of Jenkinson. He'd be a nice fit in your back five too 😉

See that's the big problem with it all. Sagna has been rubbish all season and directly gave away at least one or two goals in his last spell in the team. I probably won't dare to go for young Jenko in the end, even if I want to.

Man Utd have some of the toughest fixtures to come. I don't understand the DDG bandwagon. There's the Lindegaard threat AND the fixtures aren't even very good.

City's home fixtures are excellent, away fixtures...not so much right now.

Arsenal for me are a team with great fixtures and some nice home fixtures so I would say they are really sticking out as strong candidates for defensive investment. The problem of course is their defence is very tricky to pick from. Mertesacker looking like the only one you could really say is first choice.

        Fair points.

Don't really agree with those about United/DDG however. I think their fixtures are good, with a couple of bad ones of course. Their recent defensive stats are so far ahead of any other teams too, they're barely even conceding chances right now, let alone goals. Bit biased over here perhaps, since I got DDG in seven weeks ago ;). But I understand the problems with him too.

Chris Glover did an interesting piece on late season form. That suggests relegation strugglers improve their scoring but not their defense(probably due to their need of wins. Best bet IMO is to find value in big teams with something still to play for: Arsenal(Fabianski, Merte), Dawson, DDG. Maybe some other surprise inclusions. I agree with you that City seem to have lost someting, but if they get a few good results for example vs United they may return to form quickly.

Still 2 expensive and 3 cheapos for me. But the expensive ones could be someone like Merte or Dawson.

Do you have a link to that piece from Chris Glover? I've always been curious about how the strugglers actually react in late season. Spurs is an excellent shout actually, I'll have a look at them.

I think too. Although I might hold fire on him for a few weeks more. In the short term Spurs do have some tricky fixtures. Think they will concede in three out of the next four.

It was a really great read, pretty much covers late season form for all parts of the table and how they affect attacking and defensive performances. Mid table still a crapshoot though.

Interesting read thanks tinkerman. I think it reinforces how much luck is involved in the game though as this seasons stars bale, Suarez, mata and Walcott all had good form from previous years but took a while to get going. You could have stuck by and claimed to have made the right decision or waited for their form to turn before getting them back.

Swapping about between players is costly in transfers and sometimes in points but it does make sense to get players in form rather than trying to constantly predict the next big thing.

Presume this has been discussed to death on here over the past few weeks but what do we make of the Arsenal keeper situation? On Bunn and Szces at the moment so I was looking to bring in Fabianski for one of the two. Do we reckon he can last till the end of the season? If there's any doubt, I could go down the flair(?) route of Fabianski and Szces as a partnership?

    What do we think?

I'm in the same position and have given it quite a bit of though in addition to discussing it on here quite a bit.

Fabianski and Szczesney would be a perfect solution if it wasn't for the fact that they have a very favourable double.

You'll want at least two attackers and having two Arsenal stoppers would only allow for one outfield player from the same club.

Also, there's a distinct possibility that they could both play one of the game in the double.

For that reason, it's out of the question IMO.

Ruddy and Bunn makes a lot more sense. I'll be waiting a week to get a better idea of what Wenger's intentions are, the possibly selling Szczesney for Fabianski, Ruddy or someone else (e.g. Juusi, Schwarzer)

Yeah I was also thinking of Michu->Caz which would be out of the question if I got Fabianski...

Would they really play only one game of the double each? At this stage of the season, I thought It would be more likely that Wenger will just pick one and stick with them till the end of the season, but I agree that we'll have a whole lot more info after the next game.

So are you going without a keeper for the next gameweek (assuming Szczes won't play), and then reassessing with the extra info?

I'm hoping Szczesney gets recalled but risking going without a keeper for this week.

Next week I'll look to make a move when I know move. I'd rather make the right move a week later and risk missing out on points. Hopefully it won't be that many.

Making the double hit for a keeper is just nonsense.

I would go with a safer option like Jussi or Schwarzer. Both are good at stopping, both have a DGW. Both are nailed on.

That was the overriding reason why I sold him. he usually does OK when he plays, but he has more down time than most players .... he just seems very injury prone.

True, I think it substantially improves the higher your level. But yeah I have found some people on it who invite me to games regularly which is pretty good.

I do find it amusing to pick a support unit and then end up being the strongest unit on my team as they are all useless.

So plan is, one transfer this week (Hunt>Anichebe I reckon), then go into GW32 with two frees and 3.5m bank...

Then will know where we are with Utd/Chelsea doubles, and whether Saurez is banned or not. Thinking only use one transfer GW32 (prob Mig>De Gea), carry the two over to GW33 when I will do Saurez>Rooney if necessary if not another DGW transfer prob Harte>Rafael/Cole and Michu>Fellaini. Hopefully that should get me seven DGW'ers out with no hit. Phew! 🙂

I've just remembered that I dreamt of Mucha going forward for a corner in injury time and scoring a header. He looked eerily like a mixture of Jaap Stam and Jan Koller.

well it's much more certain he will keep his place if Howard is confirmed injured. Much more certain than Fab/Szezesney I mean. Because Szez isn't injured but rather just dropped, but he could be picked again. With Mucha we might get a date of how long he will be keeper. And with Howard breaking bones in his back...I'd say he might be out for longer than we think.

Arsenal have a habit of disappointing in easy fixtures, somehow, I feel Reading might be up to the game. Anyhow, I'm still not comfortable with the idea of doubling on Arsenal for 4 games even though the fixtures look good.

Thinking of doing Lukaku to Berbatov over Mata to Cazorla now, simply cause WBA might just try other strikers (Rosenberg) and rotate them, hence the lack of game time for LuLu is a concern now. Thoughts?

I can see you prioritizing getting Lukaku out over getting Mata out, with the comments that have been made lately. Berbatov is a good choice, but I prefer Giroud. Playing for a better team, and over the 4 he has better fixtures. Reading kept it relatively quiet versus Man U, but over the span of the season their defense has been absolutely horrible and Arsenal have scored quite a bit.

I can see why you'd be skeptical. But from a pure FPL standpoint, despite his recent form...I think I'd be happier going double Arsenal over single Berbatov.

I like both moves. The first on brings in a player who has a double for a player with a blank whereas the second one sells a player with a potential DGW for a player with a guaranteed, favourable gameweek with solid fixtures beforehand. Both players you're thinking of selling are rotation risks, so that shouldn't be taked into account.

I don't agree with the logic that Arsenal won't do well against those teams. Yes, they may not clear up in all of those games, but over the four fixtures you have to back them to do well.

Since we will know more about Chelsea's DGW (or lack thereof) next week, doing the first move (or even saving a FT) might be the wise choice.

I'd definitely take Cazorla over Mata over the next few though given the choice.

Good stuff. What are your thoughts on Michu vs Mata for the next 2?

Michu: nailed on but not in form, not the best fixtures
Mata: good fixtures and potential DGW, but rotation risk

Howdy all. Anybody having a punt on the England game tonight? Thinking there could be some value in FGS as the line-up isn't obvious to predict.

So who we do we think will be on pens if lamps doesn't play? Others are Ash Young & Gerrard 6/1, Clevs 10/1, leon Osman 9/1. Defoe, Welbs and Sturridge about 3/1 so too low to bother with imo.

    Osman could be interesting...

    cheers
