Everton scrape past Stoke courtesy of a wonderful solo strike by Kevin Mirallas. The Toffees produce a second clean sheet in succession but for their visitors, there was little reason to be cheerful. Here’s the Stock Check from Saturday’s final encounter…

On the Up

Kevin Mirallas
The Belgian grabbed the only goal of the game as Everton registered a third straight victory, following wins over Reading and City at Goodison. Mirallas has now scored or assisted in each of his last three at home and has now started six of the last seven – while he offers potential for double Gameweek 33, his propensity for picking up injuries will always be a concern; he limped off clutching his thigh with 10 minutes left on the clock.

The Everton Defence
David Moyes was boosted by the return of Tim Howard and Phil Jagielka after recent back and ankle injuries respectively. Tonight’s 1-0 win saw the Toffees register back-to-back clean sheets for only the second time this term, having kept out City in the previous Gameweek – with QPR, Fulham and West Ham their final three visitors, their chances of further defensive points at home look strong.

Leighton Baines
With Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar suspended, David Moyes solved his midfield dilemma by intriguingly rolling out a 3-5-2. This afforded Leighton Baines license to patrol the left flank in an even more advanced position than normal, with Seamus Coleman on the opposite wing, but with a trip to Tottenham next, it remains to be seen whether Moyes will risk operating with a three-man backline.

Going Down

Stoke Defence
Owners of Asmir Begovic and co were left disappointed after the Potters failed to keep out their opponents once again. While Tony Pulis aren’t giving too much away – they’ve conceded more than one goal just once in the last seven – it’s a single clean sheet in 13 now for Stoke. Marc Wilson’s 3.9 price tag and security of starts may be enough to persuade his owners to hold, though, particularly with three home matches in the next four.

The Stoke Attack
Going forward, Stoke are even less impressive. Their blank at Goodison means they have scored just once in the last five Gameweeks, with a recent shift to 4-4-2 making little difference to their attacking potential – struggling at both ends of the pitch, they are just four points clear of third-bottom Villa, having played a game more than Paul Lambert’s side. Villa are next to the Britannia in what looks to be a vital encounter.

Bonus Predictions – Courtesy of the Bap Chap

Sunderland 0 Man United 1 – Van Persie 3, Vidic 2, Young 1 (in the mix Carrick, Buttner, Smalling)
Arsenal 4 Reading 1 – Gervinho 3, Cazorla 2, Arteta 1 (in the mix Mariappa) (top 2 very tight)
Man City 4 Newcastle 0 – Silva 3, Clichy 2, Kompany 1 (extremely tight)
Southampton 2 Chelsea 1 – Rodriguez 3, Lambert 2, Terry 1 (in the mix S.Davis)
Swansea 1 Tottenham 2 – Vertonghen 3, Bale 3, Sigurdsson 1 (the 1 is very low and open)
West Ham 3 West Brom 1 – Carroll 3, O’Neil 2, Collins 1
Wigan 1 Norwich 0 – Kone 3, Beausejour 2, Alcaraz 1 (very low and open behind Kone, no gimmes)
Everton 1 Stoke 0 – Mirallas 3, Jelavic 2, Distin 1 (in the mix Gibson)

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I hate getting a new manager sometimes, you have to pretend you like him because he's there...I did like MON though, lot of respect for him. We're falling to pieces now.

I feel sorry for him because he inherited a bunch of misfits/rejects and got the best he could out of them. Contrary to what people say about MON I think he makes astute signings...I was encouraged by Fletcher, Johnson has been a bit of a let down but everyone knows he has talent, he got the most out of McClean, Danny Rose was someone I felt added something...Cuellar was doing decent for a while...just feel we don't have that extra quality but not sure that's really all his fault...would have been nice if he could have built something. Oh well, ce'st la vie

On paper, McLean and AJ on the wings, getting the ball into Fletcher, with Sess playing off him ... could have worked well.

Defensively, you've been fine all season. Solid in fact.

      Too many players underperformed, unfortunately.

Yep, big time. It's the players fault at the end of the day, they play like fools. There just seems to be too many players that Bruce/Keane signed and they've been there for ages but just aren't bothered about playing for us.

Yep, 'under performed' is the key phrase there. Sums Sunderland up for me this season. For me that comes down to management to get the best out of their players, MON hasn't done that.

I agree that you guys need a few star players. They are all a bit ho hum really. CM in particular needs a serious playmaker. Sess is a wide player who can play centrally but I think you need a specialist there who can drive the team forward.

I think a lot of your problem has been playing Larsson CM where he's poor and then playing a mish-mash of midfielders in defence. Lacked drive from the middle (also missed Cattermole who is for my money quite underrated when he's actually on the pitch) and organisation at the back.

        Yep

If we'd just had a good right back and Cattermole fit...

        Mignolet
        _____ Cuellar O'Shea/Brown Rose
        McClean Cattermole N'Diaye/Gardner Johnson
        Sess Fletch

it's a decent team on paper...we are just so woeful...it makes me want to cry as I really think we're going down... 🙁

But I think it is partly MON's fault - he spent a lot on Johnson when you had 2 decent wingers and 2 to cover if need be. If he'd spent that £15m on 2-3 defenders or a CM (like Swansea and Newcastle did or did in January) then I doubt you'd be in this mess.

I had great angst. I always thought it was possible so didn't consider the (c) for him. But for the long haul I'm not too worried, because there was a special reason for him being left out this week. If they have DGW I will keep; if not I will consider other options.

it seems a strange time of the season to drop him with so few games left and after a 0-1 loss to united but i guess with him being such a fans favourite at an earlier point it could have been a bit more dificult. looking at his results though he's won nine of the last 44. that is utterly terrible for what should be an established top flight team. since at least the new year he's entered post match press conferences in a gloomy despondent mood almost always lamenting the lack of quality in the squad seemingly without using his previously reviled abilities of motivating a team. and its not like he was given no resources in the summer leading to his first full season in charge. while fletcher has done well for us, he was bloody expensive, as was johnson who cant claim to have paid his wage to this point. central midfield was an obvious place that needed strengthening but mon seemed content with holding midfielders. this is only further emphasised with the purchase of ndiaye another of the hardworking cattermole type that offer little in terms of creativity.

while i, like many sunderland supporters have a soft spot for o'neil, his sacking is by no means unfair. its been a tough season and i only hope that we can manage to keep up and find some way to rebuild. many thanks to martin for keeping us up last season, but, in a performance based job, he hasnt produced the results to deserve his current position.

Luiz was moved because he couldn't defend. Vert is immense so should stay firmly in CB (except for when he marauds forward, of course).

Was just about to post, think they'd be better off if he was playing up top instead of Ade.

Vert & Defoe could've been some combo.

I'd bench Benteke, Clichy, Demel in that order.

I'd think about bringing Berbatov in for Benteke, but maybe leave it til next week, when we know if Chelsea or Man Utd have the DGW and you can bring in one of them as well.

Yeah. Adebayor is bloody useless but he at least holds the ball up and makes decent movement. Defoe has no influence on play at all at the moment.

          Just play Jan up front.

It is true that Ade does more to support other aspects of our play but if I want a goal I'm going for Defoe over Ade all day long.

I for one just dont know what went wrong for MON at Sunderland. I've followed his progress since the heydays in the 90's when he was the manager at my beloved Wycombe. As honest a manager as you ever will see who wore his heart on his sleeve, he did wonders at Wycombe taking them from the Conference to the brink of the now Championship in successive seasons & 2 FA Trophy successes, considered by Leicester fans to be their greatest manager of all time inc. 2 league cups, Celtic 3 scot prems, and made a success at Villa, he had a habit of getting the best out of his players, very noticeable how much he would back his players in an interview. I think given more time he would have made a success at Sunderland too.
