Our final glance at Gameweek 31 sees us pay tribute to the silk lined goal threat of Fulham’s Bulgarian, the annual resurgence currently underway at the DW and analyse the displays that have transformed a certain Welshman into the new armband darling.

The Player

While Dimitar Berbatov’s classy first half performance is fresh in the memory, it’s difficult to deny him this week’s mantle, having witnessed his damaging two-goal salvo ruthlessly punish QPR’s abject defending.

Fantasy managers had backed the Fulham striker going into the Gameweek: over 70,000 had invested, knowing that early acquisition would stand them in good stead for the Gameweek 33 double fixture. Berbatov’s form of three goals in consecutive matches suggested returns but, having witnessed a dramatic decline in fortunes mid-season, last night’s brace was perhaps beyond our heady expectations.

Much was made of Bryan Ruiz’s absence when Berbatov’s output dipped from Gameweek 12 but, since the Costa Rican’s return in Gameweek 19, the Bulgarian has struck eight goals in 11 league starts. With a double Gameweek in the offing, that kind of form is difficult to overlook.

While both Robin Van Persie and Sergio Aguero stutter in the top bracket, and Daniel Sturridge and Demba Ba struggle with pitch time to show their talents, Berbatov has joined the likes of Rickie Lambert, Christian Benteke and Arouna Kone as a low-to-mid price striker option that is showing valuable consistency. Five goals in four games will guarantee him a continued stream of new investors with his price set to ascend further as we near the Gameweek 33 deadline.

Those who hesitated prior to last night’s encounter will, like Harry Redknapp, be licking wounds and pondering their next move. While investing off the back of strong returns always smacks of chasing points, Berbatov’s form and potential over the next few weeks has to be taken seriously.

Martin Jol’s side appear to have found a new freedom to their play as they look to continue a run of three wins in the last four. While the Cottagers have found the net just once in the last three away trips, visits to Newcastle and Villa can be tackled without the pressure of a relegation fight and, in Berbatov, they have a proven Premier League goalscorer who has clearly rediscovered his pomp.

The Team

A narrow home win over Norwich continued Wigan’s form as the battle to beat the drop gathers momentum. It’s three wins in four now for Roberto Martinez’s men, who have now picked up more points over that period than any other side in the bottom half of the table. Yet again, it seems the Latics only awake from their slumber when springtime arrives – last season’s escape was built on seven wins from the last nine matches and, given their current form, there’d be no real surprise if they repeat the trick.

While recent Watchlist candidate Arouna Kone has justified our faith with four goals in the last four Gameweeks and Shaun Maloney has ticked over without quite scaling the heights, there are a handful of alternatives to consider from Martinez’s side. Antolin Alcaraz’s return from long-term injury has bolstered the Latics’ three-man backline, as has the installation of Joel Robles between the sticks – coming in at 4.0 in FPL, he’s conceded just once in his two league appearances and seems to have ousted Ali Al-Habsi as Martinez’s number one.

Elsewhere, Jordi Gomez has stepped up on his recent first-team return. Preferred to James McArthur in central midfield in the last couple of matches, his smart assist for Kone’s winner against the Canaries highlighted his potential, while Jean Beausejour goes almost unnoticed on the left flank. Owned by less than 1% of FPL managers, the Chilean has scored, assisted or picked up bonus in four of the last six now – with a double Gameweek 36 also on the horizon, Wigan’s assets are likely to blink brightly on Fantasy radars as Martinez looks to belatedly steer them to safety yet again.

The Talking Point

While the first few months of the season vindicated the popular claim that Fantasy managers should “always captain RVP”, the Dutchman’s recent form has gone a long way to disproving that theory. Robin Van Persie’s assist at Sunderland failed to mask a run of a single goal in the last seven Gameweeks as his debut season at Old Trafford stutters over the finishing line. Those who have kept the faith may well have paid the price on two fronts. Not only have they harboured an expensive off form asset but, in many cases, the armband will have stayed with Van Persie at a time when another reliable and even explosive captain contender has come to the fore.

Significantly, over at White Hart Lane, Gareth Bale is now just a single point behind Van Persie in the FPL standings after a sensational series of displays. The shift between the pair has been staggering over the past few matches. From Gameweek 24 onwards, the Dutchman has one goal, four assists, nine bonus points – this equates to 37 points, with just one double figure haul served up. Bale’s extraordinary ascent up the rankings has produced eight goals, three assists and 16 bonus points – a total of 82 points or a difference of 90 points if you’d handed him the armband over that spell. Bale has delivered five double figure returns in his last seven – Van Persie has managed six all season.

Frustratingly for those who have kept Van Persie in their squads and left him with the armband, he’s still getting chances aplenty – the Dutchman is simply failing to find the net, with his goal conversion rate taking a huge dip in recent matches. Bale, on the other hand, has flourished since Andre Villas-Boas took the decision to move him from the flank and into “the hole” behind a lone striker – he’s evolved into a Fantasy force of nature and shrugged off the inconsistency that previously blighted his game. Indeed, his Fantasy returns in this new position are threatening to reach the heady heights once scaled by Cristiano Ronaldo in seasons gone by.

A blank Gameweek 33 for Bale, brought on by Chelsea’s FA Cup win over United yesterday, hands centre stage back to Van Persie. With Tottenham’s trip to the Bridge yet to be rescheduled, United’s double sees them travel to Stoke and West Ham; a pair of games which could potentially allow them to clinch the title. As he attempts to shoot his side to the title, many will revert to the default mode of captaining Van Persie but as the Gameweeks go by, it’s becoming more apparent that Bale’s displays are threatening to kill off that mantra.

Is it crazy to not do Benteke->Berbatov? I can stomach the price increase(I have 0.1m spare)

My thinking is to bench one of Michu/Benteke this week and get Berbatov next week, just in case Suarez gets banned this week. So basically Benteke->Berba is Suarez is eligible vs Reading or Suarez->Berbatov if not.

Money not an issue as I will be selling Mata anyway next week.

Do not...I repeat...do not bench Michu this week...I have a very good feeling about him.

I can understand the Benteke benching more because Stoke away is a nasty fixture.

But then big strikers like Benteke are the ones who can thrive against the likes of Stoke because there is that competition in the air from set pieces and he won't be bullied.

Plus Stoke are just very poor currently.

You're not stupid and Berbatov is a nice move but I think it's still arguable that Benteke COULD match Berbatov(-4) for instance.

Berbatov won't do anything away at Villa or Newcastle, they're usually awful away and against Chelsea's defence it will be a lot harder...

    Afternoon all

Was a bit lazy last week and didn't transfer Walcott out till the last minute so missed bringing in Santi. Doubled up on that mistake by buying Lampard but his form has been good and team is looking good for next week i think.

    Bego (Fed)
Wilson, Zaba, Martin R (Maraippa, O'Brien)
    Mata, Lampard, Townsend, Michu, Bale
    RVP, Suarez (C) (Benteke)

    Questions:
    1. Play Townsend or Benteke?
    2. Play Zaba or Marippa?
    3. OK with no changes??

    Defensive Regression table updated: http://members.fantasyfootball.....view/2254/

This weeks stats suggest that over the last 4 matches played:

Everton, Fulham and Villa have conceded fewer goals than they should have. Standout team is Everton who (according to the stats) should have conceded several more goals in this period.

QPR, Swansea and Sunderland have conceded more goals than they should have. Standout team is QPR ( 😯 ) who have been unlucky statistically speaking.

Hmmm, I can't see this table but from what you are saying. I can't see how QPR can be said to be unlucky defensively...did you see the match last night? Absolute 'shoot yourself in the foot' defending!! And Fulham had the game won by the time they had 3 shots on target and could even afford to go down to 10 men and still win.

The other thing that skews these stats is things like saying Everton didn't deserve to keep a CS against City. Yes, you are probably right because City had an outrageous amount of chances, but then those City attacking numbers distort the overall idea of how many chances/shots they are going to concede in the future (as they will probably not concede as many as that in a home game again this season)

Villa is same old story innit, they've still conceded enough and should be conceding more? Same old 😉

Hence the "...statistically speaking" - I'm not trying to say this will continue, just offering a view of the last few games 😉 QPR actually conceded an above average volume of goals considering how many 'big chances' and 'shots inside the box' they've allowed the opposition.

Yes but what I'm trying to point out here is that if you watched the game in context last night, the goals all came from massive defensive blunders...catastrophically bad decision making. And ok that was all they really gave up in the game...but Fulham were allowed go 3-0 up with barely anything so that is sometimes even more worrying than if a team is 1-0 with 15 chances to their name by half time.

Context is key, but I get what you are saying. You would not have guessed Fulham had scored 3 goals last night by the stats.

That said, would you actually invest in a QPR defender right now? I'd stay well clear...forever!

But the key point is still true. QPR gave away a lot of stupid chances last night and conceded far more than they should have done given the strength of Fulhams attack. Despite what you think of Samba and Hill they will not be so awful everygame and we can expect the QPR defence to strengthen a little. Admittedly they still wont be worth buying.

I think I favour Giroud actually. It's that smash-tastic brace away at Brighton in the Cup. For some reason I can see him doing it again.
Also - we're more direct away from home. I think Santi has more potential during prolonged bouts of The Islington Shuffle... when we go direct, and break, Giroud is the one.

hmmm, I don't really think your argument is based on much though, I mean that was Brighton, in the league he has been predominately scoring all his goals at home and his away form has been poor in comparison. Whereas Cazorla has statistically been the best away player in the league arguably (beside Suarez and Bale)

Kagawa, Nani and Young would be the only that appeal, but they're fighting over 2 places so they may not play both fixtures. But alll have past explosive scores so if there is an injury to one of them then maybe one becomes more secure. I reckon Kagawa will be given a chance to impress late season in particular.

Which one would you lose? And would you do it before this GW or wait for the DGW?

I think Sturridge will outscore Berbs this week, but if Berbatov's price rise will mess up your plans I would understand the early transfer.

There seems to be a lot of talk of transferring Benteke to Berbatov. While Berbatov is on great form and has a dgw, Benteke is in equally good form and playing with a team that has to perform well to ensure they avoid relegation. So is it not a sideways move? Can see both getting similar amounts of points for the rest of the season.

I think it was worth doing last week fo sho, because then you had the QPR fixture for Berbs, in addition to the DGW. You still have the DGW looking yummi but the appeal has decreased now.

    DGW team (aspirational);

    DDG (Bunn)
    Baines Sagna Clyne (Pearce Azpil)
    Felaini Walcott Santi Townsend (Bale)
    RVP Lambert Suarez*

    (*need a re-think if Suarez gets a yellow gw32)

I feel sorry for Sturridge owners...they now face the dilemma of selling him before a lovely home game where if he starts he's likely to do well. And Berba is rising. I can see a few broken hearts this weekend if he starts.

Keep an eye out for bib theories/twitter rumours because sometimes you can find out the lineup beforehand (so I'd wait before thinking about selling him until Friday)

Sturridge(WHM) is a much better prospect than Berb(new) imo.

I reckon it would be wise to wait to hear news on whether Sturridge will start. That would be the no.1 reason why you would want to sell, right? Because he's not sure of a start.

But if he was to be sure of starting, I'd argue most owners would keep for this fixture. Which is why I think it's a complex situation.

The transfer might be worth it if Sturridge's place in the team is not cemented but the points potential for Sturridge is still stronger than Berbatov's imo.

After another week on the bench i'm ready to pull the plug on Nastasic, but apart from Arsenal (who i already have 3) - i can't see a great deal of DGW defensive value...

Considering Demel, purely to free up a bit of cash to invest in midfield...

Anyone got any better ideas of how i could spend my 5.4?
