With Monday night’s frantic Old Trafford clash bringing an inauspicious Gameweek 32 to a close, we reflect on the lessons on show to discuss United’s stuttering, City’s vibrant defiance, the force that is the end of season Southampton and the failure of Luis Suarez to take that final step towards Fantasy heavyweight status…

United are toiling their way to the title…
It’s perhaps not surprising, given the seemingly unassailable lead they’ve established at the top of the table but, from Monday night’s Old Trafford performance, it appears that Sir Alex Ferguson’s side aren’t about to blaze their way to glory – more likely limp over the line. While the back four had recorded six consecutive clean sheets up until last night’s defeat to City, United have now notched just a single goal in their last three league encounters. With Robin Van Persie unable to find the scoring habit and Wayne Rooney still recovering fitness, the United attack seemed to lack potency and, not for the first time this season, it was a set-piece that eventually brought the breakthrough to level matters. The lack of a cutting edge is not the scenario that Fantasy mangers will have been looking for heading into the double Gameweek, particularly with United facing up to two sides who, on their day, can offer a stubborn resistance. Stoke are scraping for survival and could well form a significant barrier at the Britannia, whilst West Ham showed at Anfield this weekend that they have the resolve to grind their way to mathematical safety.

City have the spirit to offer profit…
They may well be all but out of the title race but Roberto Mancini’s side showed enough last night to suggest that they may yet have a part to play in our Fantasy seasons. Sergio Aguero’s goal offered a scintillating reminder of his talents, while the prompting of David Silva and Yaya Toure, coupled with the determination and leadership of Vincent Kompany underlined the quality throughout the spine of the current Champions. Cleary Mancini had his troops up for last night’s fight – it remains to be seen whether the motivation of a local derby was the key and if they can carry the confidence gained over into their remaining fixtures, starting with Wigan next midweek.

Southampton are an end of season force…
While City could well come to the fore over the remaining Gameweeks, there’s little doubt that Southampton are already in bloom and are now the league’s form side. Mauricio Pochettino continues to earn plaudits for the speed and efficiency with which he’s imposed his beliefs and brand of football on a set of players that were once under real threat of dropping back down to the Championship. While that is still a possibility, the Saints’ form would suggest that they will go on earning results and eventually pull well clear of the trapdoor. Fantasy managers should be jumping on board, not just with the attacking potential offered by Rickie Lambert and the revived Jay Rodrguez but also with their budget back four assets which go on defying early season form to earn shutouts.

There’s no armband assurance with Suarez just yet…
Liverpool went into their clash with West Ham heavily backed to dish out a damaging defeat on Sam Allardyce’s side but found themselves huffing and puffing their way to a frustrating stalemate. Luis Suarez was backed above any other player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), earning further investors with the majority of managers handing the Uruguayan the Gameweek captaincy. With Van Persie woefully short of scoring form and Gareth Bale absent through injury, Suarez, with five goals in his last five league starts, seemed an assured option. Sunday’s blank was, however, his third league game without a goal indicating that he hasn’t yet reached the status where he can be considered a cut and dry captaincy option that delivers with the kind of regularity that Van Persie demonstrated earlier in the season.

United’s Dutchman scored in nine of 10 straight league matches this term, Suarez has arguably been more explosive but can’t quite match that level of consistent return – after a stunning season, this is perhaps the final step before the Liverpool striker can be placed in the same Fantasy bracket as his Golden Boot rival. Suarez’s failure kept the average FPL score at just 32 points with Branislav Ivanovic the only player with over 10% ownership to fetch a double figure return. Suarez travels to the Madejski next, a scenario that could well find him back in profit. With a double Gameweek distracting us elsewhere, however, the armband will likely be distributed the way of Van Persie, Wayne Rooney or an Arsenal asset.

Di Canio’s impact showed promise…
While the Black Cats ultimately slipped to defeat amidst claims from their new manager that they lacked the fitness to compete, there’s little doubt that there was evidence of a revival as a result of Paolo Di Canio’s arrival. Sunderland’s first-half display at Stamford Bridge offered hope to their faithful that they have the determination and talent to pull clear – both of which will need to be shown in full effect in next weekend’s Tyne-Wear derby clash. Above all, Di Canio has perhaps injected passion back into a set of players that had looked dejected, bereft of ideas and almost resigned to slipping into the relegation mire. It remains to be seen if that will be enough to spark the revival required to pull clear. Fantasy managers won’t be sniffing around their ailing assets just yet but, a spirited display this weekend, perhaps coupled with a 4-4-2 and some increased attacking threat, could yet rouse interest for what looks to be a fascinating run-in.

It might just be time to think out of the box…
Facing up to a potentially pivotal double Gameweek, recent events have suddenly promoted several new names to challenge our established thinking. The form of Kevin Mirallas and Gervinho has given us plenty to chew over, having done enough to warrant starts in one, if not both of their respective fixtures. Sitting in the mid-price bracket, the duo would be available to the majority of Fantasy managers and while there will be doubts lingering on their long-term appeal following Gameweek 33, Mirallas and Gervinho could provide key differentials for those looking to bridge the gap with something different.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If it was a knock or a slight sprain, I would get him in. But groins are funny. Groin injuries have virtually destroyed Steven Gerrard's burst and he played in games where he had the injury and it made it worse. He had to have a hefty layoff aswell. Groin injuries are funny and I wouldn't take the risk on Walcott. Cazorla looks a better option. I also looked at Arteta, Rosicky and Gervino. But decided to just go with Cazorla in the end.

    Hi All,

What would you think of this Wildcard/DDG team?

    Fabianski/Foster
    Baines/Evra/Demel/Clyne/Vertonghen
    Cazorla/Fellani/Arteta/Yaya Toure (Pienaar?)/Michu
    Berbatov/Benteke/Van Persie

with the idea to have this team around GW 36.

    Foster/Fabianski
    Vertonghen/Zabaleta/Baines/Demel/Clyne
    Bale/Yaya/Cazorla/Michu/Fellani
    Kone/Benetek/Aguero

The next possibility is Sagna instead of Evra and De Gea for Fabianski.

Any kind of thoughts would be appreciated 🙂

    Thanks

Yeah last DGW of last year. Gave me something like 34 extra points. Judge each hit on its own merit a 12 pointer could work out and a -4 could not be worth it.

On the last DGWamania, I didnt commit like some did with hits, I used a FT and I got a red arrow that week, even when a huge amount of people were taking huge hits.

Perhaps stating the obvious, but a DGW gives you twice as much gametime to make up the 4 pt hit. That's entirely possible when you consider that Bego has United this week.

my choice was Silva, but he got injured last night.

What now? Who should replace him in my team?

If I get Silva, I can do Gerv>Michu, then Fellaini>Bale week after.
but if I get over 9.4m midfielder (e.g. Hazard/Mata), I will need to take a hit to get bale in (Baines>Vert)

Yeah I'm not but I just thought the RMT engine seems that each week he's more likely to get subbed off before 60 or booked than he is getting an assist. Just being pinickity but if he were getting a weekly number of around 2.3 (likely to start some minor chance of attacking returns) then it would be reasonable.

        the problem is

        Bego+Bunn are my keepers

if I do Bunn > DDG I suddenly have a whole lot of wasted money on keepers

if I do Bego > DDG - I suddenly have a potential non-keeper in Bunn and DDG who may or may not play all games before the end of the season, risky, no?

I highly doubt Walcott will get 180 mins. With the type of injury + form of Gervinho might be better to double up on the Ars defence. Especially as you already have Caz

Thing holding me back about Sagna is I can only see 1 cleanie out of the last 5 games after the DGW. Also really want to work Baines in somehow...

Captain choices depending on the type of player you are:

Cazorla - the safe pick for those that hate risks
Fellaini - the safe pick for those that don't own Cazorla
Suarez - the safe pick for those that hate double gameweeks
RVP/Rooney - the ordinarily safe pick for those that hate the reality of cold stats that stare you in the face
Rosicky - the flair pick for those that love risk
Berbatov - the cigar smoking gent about town pick, that likes their captain to be just about the coolest chap on the pitch irrespective of fixtures.

....its between Caz and Fellaini for me probably...I'm that kinda guy.

Last night's game 0 shots on goal. Only goal recently was a skuffed deflection.

I'm happy to own him just in case he explodes, but the question you need to be asking is what evidence is there to captain Rooney?

his games before last night, last night was against City, the hardest fixture they could arguably play...and he was only back from injury. If you judged him on that fixture alone you might as well not judge him at all.

It sounds like a bit of a knee-jerk re-assessment here, Jonty, no offence.

I'm not a member (because I'm young and don't have my own credit card) but I have seen the stats from last night. I'll admit they don't look good for Rooney but I watched the game and saw he created two chances for Young and RVP which they should have done better with. And Welbeck failed to slip him through at one point which was annoying.

I would never judge a striker's form though after a game against City. Remember, he scored 2 against City last time out, what other players can say they've done that?

I fully believe Rooney in the DGW is a top choice

I hope you are right as I own him and if he does well I get huge podcast bragging rights.

I just think there are better options for scoring more points and Man Utd's form is really poor. I can't see them annihilating teams as they once did. As the artcile says they are stuttering to victory.

I can see Arsenal realling putting teams to the sword as the season closes.

Caz's home form is superb and he has two fairly decent fixtures. West Ham's defensive resliance is a also an issue.

RVP third because of rotation risk more than bad form. Cazorla ahead of Berbatov due to better fixtures and also more to play for

It's not just a matter of his fitness, which he won't be 100%. He was also not playing too great before the injury.

We now have fresh players who didn't start a lot in the first half of the season who are starting to play with confidence in a team on a winning run.

I can't see Wenger changing that...

    Jk's crazy idea

Let's say Theo won't be fit for NOR, but will be for EVE? From this one might say that Gervy will play 1 game and Theo 1. This would make neither great options, so one may be better going with the more nailed on Pienaar. This being the case an Arsenal spot become open. I have Sagna. What about the possibility of also owning Jenks. Rotation proof and GW33 I'll have Maloney to sub in should Sagna play both games.

Good idea, or do I just get Demel/keep Turner

as in one a scale 1 to Upney, how crazy is it?
