634x258 Season Review

In Harry Redknapp’s final season in charge at White Hart Lane, Gareth Bale had finally come to the fore as a genuine Fantasy contender. After a couple of distinctly average campaigns, here was a player we could consistently rely upon to pick up the points, with the Welshman serving up double figures for both goals and assists in 2011/12. Then Andre Villas-Boas arrived last summer and Bale stepped up another level.

Initially utilised on the left flank by the new man in charge, Bale’s move to the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker saw him wreak havoc on Premier League backlines, as Villas-Boas afforded him license to dictate play from a central position. By the season’s end, Bale’s displays for Tottenham saw him become only the second player in history to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards in addition to the FWA (Football Writer’s Association) Player of the Year Award, after Cristiano Ronaldo completed the treble back in 2007.

The Statistics

It was a slow beginning to the campaign, though. With both Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart leaving the Lane last summer, Villas-Boas’ side needed some time to hit their stride. Initially starting the season as a premium priced option – with a cost of 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – Bale failed to register any returns in the first three league fixtures as Spurs stuttered out the blocks.

A goal and maximum bonus points in the Gameweek 4 win at Reading hinted at what was to follow as Bale produced an 11 point return in a 3-1 win at the Madejski. In total, Bale’s outstanding captaincy potential helped him register an incredible 14 double figure hauls over his 34 appearances, including a sublime run of eight sets of 10+ points over just 10 appearances between Gameweek 25 and 36.

With a goal or assist in 11 of his final 14 appearances, Bale’s form rarely faltered as he served up one match-winning display after another and afforded Fantasy managers a genuine rival to Robin Van Persie for the armband on a near-permanent basis. Ending the season with 21 goals (more than double his haul from the previous campaign), he also contributed nine assists and an incredible 50 bonus points – more than any player.

A total of 249 FPL points was second only to Van Persie’s 262 points, though saw Bale top the midfield standings by a considerable distance, despite some impressive showings by the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Santi Cazorla. The Welshman’s average of 7.2 points per game was greater than any other player, however, as he rewarded his Fantasy owners with a level of returns not seen since Ronaldo’s heyday at Old Trafford.

The Prospects

Without question, we can expect a significant price hike right across the Fantasy games. David Silva – at 10.0 in FPL– was the only midfield initially slapped with a double figure price tag in 2012/13, while Bale was also less than the City playmaker in the Sky Sports game. This time round, the Tottenham man looks set to be the priciest midfield option on the market – few eyebrows would be raised if he comes in around 12.0 in FPL, for example.

Clearly thriving under Villas-Boas, Bale has shown just what a special talent he is – while Zinedine Zidane continues to lavish praise on the Welshman’s abilities on behalf of Real Madrid, Bale – despite his side’s fifth place finish – looks set to stay in north London for at least one more season.

As Spurs prepare for their second year under Villas-Boas, more acquisitions can be expected over the summer as the Portuguese looks to build on his debut campaign. Regardless of who he brings in, though, switching Bale to the middle is likely to be his masterstroke – the Welshman’s sensational displays from central areas, with his ability to beat his marker with a moment of brilliance and find the net from long-range look set to remain a major feature for the season ahead.

With a consistency of both starts and returns that ultimately proved superior to similarly priced midfielders, Bale – despite an increased cost – will still hold huge appeal, then. Playing from a central position from Gameweek 1 this time around, he could quite feasibly better his score from 2012/13 and take Van Persie’s FPL crown away – those nine assists could easily be trumped if his team mates upped their conversion rates, for instance.

Scouring the market for a couple of mid-price forwards looks the best way to accommodate Bale and a heavy-hitter up top, though Chelsea’s early double Gameweek may have an impact on how quickly some may acquire his services. With the Blues set to face Bayern Munich in the Super Cup final in late August, many are already planning to double up on Mata and Hazard – while such a tactic could come to fruition, omitting Bale from our squads would leave those Fantasy managers at the mercy of his explosive abilities right from the off.

        I wouldn't bother until at least July. People keep seeing little changes in the layout of the game like different banners and stuff and the promoted teams badges being put up but it never has any real correlation with when its going to start. When it opens, we'll know on here within ten minutes, not worth checking every few minutes just for the sake of a single digit id.

                  So we pick 5 players and then send them onto you and then the other teams decide whether to bid on them or not? Doesn't that take the "scouting" element out of it a lot?

                    You know that's a good question. We did contemplate adding a "finder's fee" for teams that bid for other's targets but decided against it.

                    Every team is likely to have different strategies in a round. So that should retain the scouting element 🙂

                    Personally I think that takes away from the game. If you dig up some Brazilian wonderkid that ends up getting signed by PSG who nobody has ever heard of surely that information would benefit you much, much more than if it was shared with everybody. Personally I'd either do it completely blind so that anybody bids for 3 players of their choosing or some form finders fee as you suggest although that ups the complexity of it even more.

                    Always a stickler with your rules aren't I.

                    Always 😉

                    Hmm did consider the former too where its completely blind without identifying any targets. But the point of this is that

                    1) Say Chelsea were planning to bid for Bale in Round 5 rather than Round 2. Spurs identifies Bale as target in Round 2. Showing the targets before bidding would alert Chelsea that Bale could possibly be out in Round 2.

                    2) Also wanted this to be a pre-screening process, whereby we ensure teams are getting the right players for the rounds (positions, not already taken by other teams in previous rounds, etc)

                    3) Finder's fee seems the best solution to this. Unfortunately, this would further complicate it.

                    The current model actually imitates the way IPL auctions are held actually, except its closed bidding.

                    I don't think 1) is a good thing. If anything its a bad thing. The element of surprise should be your friend in this. 2) Well if people aren't muppets then they will know it anyway. 3) Agree

    Are there certain criteria that determine a rise/fall on Transfer Markt or are they all independent and based on transfer fee, club joined etc?

      Yes they're independent and mostly influenced by performances and transfers. Since the performance factor is removed for most due to the lack of footy over the summer, you'd think the only big factor is the possibility of any transfer to a club in real-life.

            Yep, several factors will contribute to it. Wages, length of contract, club he goes to

            As a general rule, if he goes for that less an amount, his value definitely going to dive down (probably around the 40m range)

              That is interesting. That means you can't just assume because it's a high profile player like Rooney going to another big club that it will automatically be good for the transfer value. Currently £65m on the website but he could sell for half of that and at 27 might not get more than a 3 year deal.

          So there's no point going for people that have just transferred as their price won't increase. I suppose a big injury could massively affect your values. I don't understand how the bidding tokens work though? Am I being completely dumb?

              Surely its going to be a battle of who gets Messi or Ronaldo will win? The gap between those two (and arguably between them) when doubled will be too large to overcome with the rest of your team?

                  Not really. That's where the budget comes into play.

                  You'll see that the winning bid for Messi and Ronaldo will be REALLY REALLY high.

                    Also remember there are 2 windows for transfers between teams.

                    So clubs with a lot of budget are going to want Messi and Ronaldo possibly from clubs with very limited budget 😉

                    I think its the captaincy - I could see how you could make up the difference of 30m it it weren't doubled but the 60m or so gap will be too much.

                    I agree Scroob. Thats why Messi and Ronaldo are SO important. And that's why I think/hope the winning bid for Ronaldo and Messi would be around ~80 tokens, whilst the rest will have a more balanced squad.

                    It is interesting to see how the market is going to play this. I dont pretend to be an expert at this. Its definitely an experiment on the transfer market economics 😉

                    They are not actually crazily higher than everyone else and even with captaincy the gap is easily made up over 11 players I reckon. It was one of the things I checked during testing.

            Bid tokens are the currency and 100 bid tokens is your budget. So you have 15 players to buy with 100 tokens but need to be careful not to overbid. So you might really want CR7 but you don't want to bid most of your budget on 1 player and struggle to buy the rest of your squad.

              The the aim is to get your hands on players with good values that other people wont have thought about.

              I'm looking at the prices on here and think that players are perhaps over valued and therefore players who transfer in real life are more likely to drop in value than raise.

              I suppose you could play safe by getting all players that are definitely not moving yea?

        I just love Alonso, he doesn't need to run around too much as he's ridiculously good at positioning himself. Yaya is rapid and gets around the pitch with ease. I thought of loads of other players but thought that it balanced out nicely like that.

    Next years plan:

    Keepers: rotate 1 mid price & 1 4m, nearly always play the home keeper

    Defenders: 2 decent (5.5m max), 3x4m that start, rotate - try to get cheap decent from big teams, i.e Jenkinson if sagna goes

    Midfielders: 2 big hitters from different teams (such as Bale & Mata), 2 mid priced from different teams again, 1 cheapo that plays in an attacking position - an Out Of Position if possible (for all mids)

    Strikers: RVP, a mid priced, a cheapo that starts

    Captain RVP or one of the midfield big hitters, if they have a decent home game

    Try not to take transfer hits

    Try to keep the transfer for 2 weeks, 2FT's

    Guarantees a top 1k finish 😎

      same as you for defenders but hopefully an OOP def will show up.

    Any of you guys that play, can you help me find some of the must buys this year? Like Cardenas, Enyeama and Eddie Johnson on 07.

      So every Friday deadline will have 3 things -

    Once the prices and FFS point projections (season) are released for next season, would it be possible to work out the theoretical optimal squad based on those two pieces of data? How easy / hard would this be?

    Surely with this transfer thing, whoever has Messi or Ronaldo has a massive advantage, it would almost be worth spending 86 points on making sure that you get one of those players and then try to find loads of players of decent value by spending just one point on them.

      I'd be surprised if nobody goes down that route. Messi (c) + 14 randoms could quite easily win.

        If they do that they will be outbid on all the 30M+ players which will be a massive handicap to make up for Messi(C).

        So;

        A) 210 +14x10 = 350M
        B) 113 + 5x30 + 9x10 = 353M

        Team B with Iniesta Captain and more chips left over could easily do it.

          How many players over 30m are there? Because if there's significantly less than 95 then the other 19 teams competing to be team B would be relatively unlikely to get 5 30mers.

            39 30+ players.

            But it does show that it is definitely possible.

            I think that loads of the teams will have a share of the 30 mil players and there will be loads of 8-10 mil players that you can pick up for one token.

      Don't you only benefit if their value goes up though? I can't see any reason why Messi's value would go up.

      Or have I got this wrong? Only skimmed the rules.

        You've got it wrong. The advantage to buying a player whilst he is cheap in expectation of a future price hike over the summer is you can probs get him unchallenged.

          Yea but the problem is that you could potentially buy somebody for 1 token worth 1 mil and somebody for 1 token who is 15 mil

    Messi = £105M
    Ronaldo = £88M
    Iniesta = £61.5M
    Rooney =£57M
    Falcoa = £53M (and likely to rise)
    Fabregas = £48.5M
    Cavani = £48.5M (and likely to rise)

    These are the highest valued players at the current time. Now firstly, it is not inconceivable that Falcoa and Cavani could put in a decent challenge on the top3 come the end of the summer. Secondly, everyone will be fighting for the top two so the question is just how many tokens will you put on them knowing that if you win you will not be able to get any of the other top players. Thirdly, the main fun of the game is finding the unknown players with ridiculous values come the end of the transfer window, enjoy the game.

        And thats why you need good scouts, its easy to search on TransferMarkt, but every team has the same information. Find your worryingly overpriced players such as Samba and you could be onto a winner
