Eight Premier League teams were in action over Monday and Tuesday as the friendlies schedule continues to pick up pace. Olivier Giroud found the net once again for Arsenal, Nicolas Anelka struck twice for West Brom, Man United lost for the second time in three games under David Moyes, while Shola Ameobi scored for the second match running as Newcastle managed a draw in Portugal. Here’s a brief round-up of the action, with some relevant quotes thrown in:

Nagoya Grampus 1 Arsenal 3
Olivier Giroud took his pre-season haul to six goals in three games by notching the Gunners’ opener with just three minutes on the clock, courtesy of a Tomas Rosicky assist. A foul on the Frenchman allowed Ryo Miyaichi to score from the spot, while Theo Walcott scored the third – his second strike in three appearances. Wojciech Szczesny (back) and Laurent Koscielny (knock) missed out for the visitors and with Thomas Vermaelen absent from the tour with a back injury, Bacary Sagna filled in at centre-half alongside Per Mertesacker. Wenger also confirmed that Nacho Monreal “looks likely†to miss the start of the season with a back problem, leaving Kieran Gibbs as the only cover for the left-back berth.

After the match, the Frenchman spoke to the club’s official website and attributed his flourishing form to an increase in self-belief:

“Confidence makes all the difference. Confidence is the first thing you have to work on, you have to work on your mental [side of the game] and keep going. It is something you must have when you are a football player. “I don’t really feel different compared to last year but maybe I know my teammates very well now so I am more confident and I feel ready on the pitch. I do things naturally and we find each other better on the pitch. We have a better relationship now and I really want to do my best for this season.”

Puskas FC Academy 0 West Brom 3
Nicolas Anelka was at the double as the Baggies swept aside their Portuguese opponents on Monday afternoon. Having rolled out a 4-3-1-2 formation for the previous game against Hamburg, Steve Clarke changed system again and began the game with a 4-3-3, fielding Shane Long and Markus Rosenberg on either side of the Frenchman. Clarke made seven changes just after the hour mark and tinkered with his team’s shape once more, moving to a 3-5-2 for the last 30 minutes. Graham Dorrans slotted home the third from the spot late on but it was Anelka who was the recipient of Clarke’s post-match praise; an indication, perhaps, that the 5.5 priced Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward is set to play a significant part for the midlands outfit in the season ahead:

“I never had a doubt about Nicolas because I’d worked with him at Chelsea. I was with Avram Grant when we bought him in the January. So I knew the type of person he was, the type of player he is. I’ve one or two good contacts around the football world and I checked him out when he was at Juventus. The fitness statistics and information I got about his fitness was that he was one of the best trainers. He was one of the top performers, in terms of fitness stats, at Juventus. If you can do that at Juventus then you’re fit enough for us…Where he’s been in the football world and what he’s done in the football world tells you that he’s a top quality player and we’re just happy to have him in our group this season.”

Yokohama 3 Man United 2
David Moyes’ side suffered their second pre-season defeat yesterday afternoon. The United boss left out the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick, while Robin Van Persie lasted 45 minutes before being withdrawn as a precaution. Youngster Jessie Lingard continued his impressive form with a third goal in the last two matches, with the visitors’ second coming courtesy of an own goal from centre-half Masakazu Tashiro. Moyes was able to hand Chris Smalling and Ashley Young their first taste of action after both recovered from injury, while Shinji Kagawa climbed off the bench to make his first appearances of the summer after an extended break. After the game, the United boss rolled out an update on the injury situation up front:

“We’ve got a couple of wee worries. Robin just felt his thigh in the first half and we didn’t want to take any chances. Danny Welbeck felt his groin when he came on and we’ve just got to make sure they’re all okay especially with so many games coming up. We’ve still got a few games to play before the season starts when we get back home. As far as we know Wayne [Rooney] is coming on, He’s started light jogging and the feedback I’m getting from the physios is that he’s progressing. Hopefully those dates are still on track.”

Hamburg 1 West Ham 3
The Hammers bounced back from their weekend thrashing at the hands of Mainz 05 to register the fifth win in six pre-season matches. Sam Allardyce started Razvan Rat and Guy Demel in the full-back roles, while James Collins returned after being given the weekend off for personal reasons. Up top, Ravel Morrison and Matt Jarvis were given the nod on either side of Modibo Maiga and Jarvis proved hugely instrumental in the result, supplying assists for all three of the visitors’ goals. Alou Diarra opened the scoring and was quickly followed by James Tomkins before Morrison added the third after his fellow wide man had been fouled in the box – Diarra has now notched twice in pre-season, the same number as Kevin Nolan, while Morrison has found the net on three occasions; more than any of his team mates.

Ahead of a strong run of opening six fixtures, Jarvis – who is 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League – earned the post-match praise of Hammers assistant boss Neil McDonald:

“Matt Jarvis was in excellent form. He got at his man, he crossed the ball, he took his man on and he drove into the box. That’s what we’ve been trying to get him to do since he came to the football club. Hopefully the penny’s dropped and we’ll have a few more performances like that where he’s creating goals and setting chances up for everybody.”

Sporting Braga 0 Hull 0
The Tigers registered their second successive goalless draw in Portugal last night. Steve Bruce’s side had failed to find a way past Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and, despite handing new boy Danny Graham 60 minutes as he builds up his fitness, Hull once again toiled up top. Sone Aluko impressed after climbing off the bench at the break in a game that saw Bruce utilise South African midfielder Daylon Claasen as a trialist.

Luton 2 Aston Villa 0
Having drawn their opening four matches, Paul Lambert’s side slipped to a first pre-season loss at Kenilworth Road last night. The Villa boss named a second-string starting XI aside from Christian Benteke, who was making his first appearance of the summer as he builds up his fitness. The Belgian lasted 45 minutes before making way, but despite changing the remaining 10 starters on the hour mark, Lambert watched his side fail to turn around the deficit. With many fringe players handed game time, the Villa boss wasn’t too concerned over the result; instead, he took time out to focus on Benteke’s return and revealed he is optimistic over the fitness of a number of omissions ahead of Villa’s next match against Crewe:

“The pleasing thing was Christian being back. Some of his touches were brilliant. He had 45 minutes. He’s only done a bit of training. He’s still got to work on match fitness but that 45 minutes will do him the world of good…We have too many injures at the minute. When you look at the ones missing – the likes of Okore, Tonev, Agbonlahor, Weimann, Helenius – there are a lot of big players absent. We want to get them back. Hopefully there might be one or two back for Friday. We will have to see how that progresses and see how it goes.”

Pacos de Ferreira 1 Newcastle 1
Shola Ameobi scored for the second consecutive match as the Magpies scraped a draw after going down to 10 men. Alan Pardew handed Fabricio Coloccini, Mathieu Debuchy and Hatem Ben Arfa their first game time of the summer, though the Argentine failed to make it to the interval after receiving his marching orders in a bad-tempered affair. Moussa Sissoko was once again fielded behind a lone striker as Pardew rolled out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at left-back and Steven Taylor in the centre of defence. Davide Santon – fielded in an advanced position as a sub for Ben Arfa at the break – supplied the assist for Ameobi’s strike, with Pardew making seven changes in total as the game progressed.

Gillingham 0 Crystal Palace 3
Ian Holloway handed new boy Jose Campana his debut, while the Palace boss fielded four trialists in a comfortable win last night. Campana was afforded corner kick duties in the first 45 minutes and had a hand in the opener, when his delivery was cleared by the hosts only for Dean Moxey to find the net. Holloway then changed his entire starting XI at the break and saw Stephen Dobbie contribute with a goal and assist, while Quincy Owusu-Abeyie (trialist) settled the matter with the Eagles’ third.

All this Bale leaving talk has got me tinkering with my team again!
I actually don't believe he'll go but I've got to say I do like the look of this team!
The only concern I would have is there's no outright (C) choice. Covered with all the big teams barring United though!

Yes, but Liverpool don't want to let him go, so to get what he wants he will have to hand in a written transfer request and/or Arsenal will have to increase their bid. Liverpool will be very unwilling to let him go for less than about £55m. Unfortunately, his head has been turned by his agent and others while he was at the Confed Cup.

Hugain to Napoli is on....cue Arsean put in 40m for Suarez knowing they have at most 3-4 days to tie up the deal...Suarez agent says wait on Madrid making an offer...

Madrid sell Hugain to Napoli ..... Madrid buy Suarez...Suarez is actually happy Arsenal are making an offer as it'll bring Madrid to party quicker....

    2 questions

    1)

Berba and Snodgrass or RvW and 7.0 mid (who) Snodgrass is great value but could get a lot 0f 2s, as could Berba. RvW maybe more consistent due to being the striker?

    2) Yanga best bet from Newcastle defence if 4.5 is the best I can afford? if i knew Alacaraz would start I'd go him and Santon over Yanga and Coleman

I am very hesitant about Snodgrass and Berba as they aren't reliable scorers. However RVW hasn't proven himself in the BPL.

I am not sure with the Newcastle cbs, but i do think if fit Alcaraz will be nailed on as thats is why Martinez brought him in. Santon however is more nailed in than Yang, however the Newcastle cbs should be closely monitored.

Berba is a pretty darn reliable scorer. BP System seems to favor him, he's got Ruiz fit to support him. He's as good a pick as any. Snodgrass is easily the best value at 6.5 in midfield.

The only worry I have with Berba is that Fulham's midfield is horrendus. They're reliant on an injury prone player to get him the service. i hope this new owner gives Jol a bit of dosh to strengthen in that area

Obviously the doubt over Yanga is the Staylor threat. I think Yanga has the edge but I may be wrong. He is the best of Newcastle for 4.5. I have reservations about Newcastle's prospects.

I'd go Berba and Snodgrass. I think RvW is unproven - could be fantastic - but Snodgrass was great last season and Berba's record when played is consistent over multiple seasons.

Yanga won't be first choice imo jk. Pardew said he "could" be important this season which to me means if they have injuries or if he can win a cb spot. They are already low on "brittish" players according to reports coming out of toon so to not play saylor would be ridiculous.

Repost, got lost off the bottom of the last page.

Your views please. Trying to get a decent sprinkling of players with decent fixtures.

    Hazard-Bale-Walcott-Snodgrass-4.5m
    Sturridge-Negredo-Kone

    Hazard-Bale-Coutinho-Mirallas-4.5m
    Giroud-Aguero-Anelka

    Coutinho-Bale-Walcott-Snodgrass-4.5m
    Lukaku-Aguero-Kone

I like Negredo but obviously there are doubts about Pellegrini's rotation.

In light of a possible Chelsea/Villa DGW1 and RVPs fixtures, is anyone considering leaving out RVP for the first 6-8 weeks? Assuming Bale and Suarez arent in the BPL, I was targeting this:

    Mannone, Davis
Ivanovic, Collins, Clyne, Toure, Dawson (WBA)
    Coutinho, Silva, Hazard, Walcott, Snodgrass
    Benteke, Kone, Lambert

Problem comes when you have to bench potential heavy hitters up front.

Well, the scenario is the same as last year, when there was a DGW. He would have two tough fixtures, but two nonetheless.

Oh yeah, the DGW. I'm slow sometimes. If there is a DGW and Bale isn't here, it makes sense. I'm doubtful.

Good work though, dealing with those scenarios.

Id say Aguero is nailed on, but could play a bit deeper. Really hard to say who will be worth owning. Jovetic should be nailed on too but will play a bit deeper. But I could be totally wrong about Negredos PT, but we wont know better until a bit closer to the start

Last year I had Jussy and Bego from day 1. The idea was to rotate them each week depending on the opponent.

I was wright on picking them as goalies since they become the best choises in last years season, but it proved to be a stressing strategy, since many times the one that I selected for the XI scored less than the one that I benched...

This year I will defenitly choose the path to more peaceful weeks by only buying Migs and a 4 to bench every week.

    Problem solved...

Man City 1-0 v South China. Pitch was dreadful and Man C were without Aguero, Jovetic, Navas, Silva and Nastasic. Man C were quite good first half and then played at a very leisurely pace in the second half. Not much to be gleaned here and the final v Sunderland will be of more use. However:
    1. Milner was outstanding and Pellegrini may wonder how he can include him in his X1. Not a formality that Navas will get the right wing/RM slot and I can see Milner getting minutes when Man C are holding a lead. Nasri was on the left and was tidy. Not sure who, if anyone, will get the left wing/LW slot. One possibility is that Silva will end up there with Jovetic in the hole.
    2. Nice goal from Dzeko.
    3. Toure was in the hole first half but that was because Barry and Fernandinho were holding. Fernandinho played too deep to be worth FPL consideration.
    4. Negredo looked very classy when he came on and Pellegrini was happy to have him and Dzeko together for a time. I am seriously tempted to have him on the Monday game v Newcastle as my gamble.
    5. Zabaleta got forward quite a few times.
    6. Lescott was sound. Nastasic is not 100% for the first game at this stage, especially as he will be coming back from Colombia.
    7. Clichy was sound in the first half. Martins of South China did very well attacking the space in the second half where Kolarov should have been.
It will be interesting to see where Aguero fits in. My guess is the first line up will be something like:

    Hart,
Zab,Kompany, Lescott (60/40 over Nast) Clichy,
    Toure Fernandinho
    Navas. . Silva
    Aguero Negredo

with Jovetic and Nasri/Milner to come on.

    Mignolet (Boruc)

Very nice balance. 10.0m for keeper rotation seems a bit pricey, and with the 0.5 you get from downgrading Mignolet > Foster, you can get Negredo instead of Benteke/Sturridge. Personally I would prefer Aguero, which could be achieved by downgrading Lambert > Rodriguez, however this does make your front line a bit weak, so you could downgrade Bellamy to Thomas and use that extra 1.0m to upgrade Anelka OR get Aspas/Kone/RvW. Hope that helps 🙂

No Bale AND Rvp may give your team good balance, but one of them is needed. Here are some possible changes:

      Reid > Collins

      Evans > Clyne

      Paulinho > Thomas

      Valencia > Bale

      Silva > Snodgrass

      Dzeko > Aguero

      Lukaku > Rodriguez

They are just ideas, take what you will from them. Hope it helps 🙂

          Cheers mate 🙂

Well I almost have the same front 8 as the 2nd one:

          Bale Walcott Coutinho Snodgrass Thomas

          Aguero Giroud Anelka

So I might be a bit biased 😉

All have a good structure, but if you're focusing on fixtures then that means you're looking to rotate your 5th midfielder with your 3rd striker. If so, my personal choice for that rotation would be Anelka/Koren. If I had the extra 0.5m, I would be doing that (only way I could get it would be Toure > M. Turner!). If you're keen on Negredo then go for it, but if you wanna play it safe then Aguero is also there.

I think they will both have good seasons, however Snodgrass was just as good as Mirallas last year and comes in 1.0m cheaper. Set piece duties and a better early run also won me over. Plus it's a handy 1.0 in your pocket 😉

Dzeko? I think he's 4th in the pecking order at City. I'd go for Berba or Lambert.
We don't know where Valencia stands in Moyes' plans either and had a shocking season last season - maybe consider Mirallas?
Collins looks likely to start alongside Reid and is 0.5m cheaper. Use the 0.5 and upgrade to Kagawa or Lampard if Mirallas doesn't take your fancy?

Thoughts on Kolo Toure and Liverpool? Looking at clean sheets here and whether Toure is nailed onto that centre back position. Alternative looks like being Michael Turner from Norwich, and the spare would upgrade Thomas to Koren. So basically:

    A: Toure and Thomas

    Or

    B: Turner and Koren

Bear in mind that I am rotating my 5th midfielder with my 3rd striker Anelka. Thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated 😀

Not bad, but a little too pricey down back. Here's what I recommend:

      Ivanovic > Collins

      Zabaleta > Clyne

      O'shea > Toure

      Navas > Walcott/Silva/Hazard

      Sissoko > Snodgrass

          J Rod (6.0) + Coleman (5.0m) = 11.0m

If you can afford the first one, then you can afford Mertesacker and J Rod

          Mertesacker (5.5m) + J Rod (6.0) = 11.5m 😀
