Norwich boss Chris Hughton made his seventh signing of the summer transfer window earlier today by acquiring long-term target Gary Hooper from Glasgow Celtic. The 25-year-old arrives at Carrow Road on a three-year deal – though the club have the option of another year – for a reported fee of around £5m and follows the likes of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Nathan Redmond, Leroy Fer and Martin Olsson to the club as Hughton looks to push on from last season’s eleventh place finish.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Hooper revealed his determination to prove himself in England’s top-flight after a highly successful stint at Parkhead under Neil Lennon:

“There’s been a lot of speculation going back to January and I’m pleased to have finally put pen to paper and joined Norwich. I can’t wait to get down to work, to get training with the lads and working with the coaching staff. I knew Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood from my youth days at Spurs so it will be great to be back working with them in the Premier League. I have scored goals at every level I have played at and the challenge of playing in the Premier League is really exciting to me.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Hooper was released by the north London club at the age of 14 back in 2002. His career got underway at Conference club Grays Athletic but, after scoring 20 times in 69 appearances, he was released again in the summer of 2006. Picked up by Southend United, he scored just twice in 32 appearances over two years and was farmed out on loan to Leyton Orient (four games, two goals) and Hereford United (19 matches, 11 goals) before Scunthorpe paid £175,000 for his services in July 2008.

Hooper’s eye for goal was instantly in evidence for Scunthorpe. A total of 24 goals in 45 league appearances in 2008/09 saw him voted Player of the Year and helped earn the club promotion to the Championship. The goals flowed once again the following season, with 19 strikes and six assists in 35 matches persuading Celtic to shell out over £2m in the summer of 2010.

Hooper wreaked havoc in his new surrounds and was the Hoops’ top scorer in each of his three seasons at Parkhead. In just 95 league appearances, he registered an eye-catching 63 goals and 24 assists, helping the club to a couple of league titles, with two Scottish Cups also accrued.

The Prospects

Having watched his side suffer back-to-back 1-0 pre-season friendly losses, Hughton has moved quickly to address a lack of attacking edge. While Norwich were decent defensively from a Fantasy perspective last term, chalking up 10 clean sheets, a 4-4-1-1 formation failed to harvest many goals – the Canaries found the net on just 41 occasions, a tally better than only Stoke (34) and relegated QPR (30).

The earlier arrival of Van Wolfswinkel had suggested Hughton would continue with his somewhat cautious approach and roll out a lone striker system once again but Norwich’s pre-season failings have perhaps led to a change of heart. Certainly, with over £13m spent on the pair, it’s fair to assume Hooper will now be expected to line up alongside the Dutchman in a 4-4-2, potentially handing Fantasy managers greater options amongst the Carrow Road squad.

Although the former Celtic star is a little more diminutive than Van Wolfswinkel (five foot nine to six foot one), Hughton’s new forwards have relatively similar attributes – both possess good movement in the box and a penchant for playing on the shoulder of the last defender – though Hooper’s renowned work ethic and link-up play may see him drop deep more often, with his unselfishness highlighted by that average of eight assists per season at Celtic.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a price of around 6.5 or 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards, bearing in mind that Van Wolfswinkel will set you back 7.0, whilst key creative force, Robert Snodgrass, is available for 6.5.

Hooper’s addition to the Canaries ranks now gives Fantasy managers something of a dilemma. While Snodgrass dominated the scene last term, there are now further options as we consider a kind batch of opening fixtures which has Hughton’s side play host to Everton, Southampton and Villa in the opening five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to Hull. Given his eye for goal, Hooper looks a more than viable target as we assemble our squads ahead of the season kick-off, with his arrival sure to bolster the Canaries chances of improving upon last term’s dire scoring record.

I dunno who Ward is. Personally I'd get Nolan and Walcott over Silva and Lampard, fancy that combo to score better for the first GWs even with the "double" for Super Frank.

    Cech (Boruc)
    Evra, Ivan, Colins, Baine (Clyne)
Nolan Hazard (C) Puncheon (Dyer, Snodgrass)
    Benteke, Kone, Djeko

I know Ivan is more risky than Luiz or Cole, but he always scores when i dont own him...

With a big 3 defense, you really don't need to invest in two other 4.5 defenders. Downgrade them to 4.0 players and invest into the midfield.

Dzeko won't get enough gametime. Will Kone get starts over Jelavic/Anichebe?

Other than that, I like it. It's different.

did think about it but i've been burnt in the past with 4.0s who don't play, id rather pay a bit more and get peeps who will play. Also if the 4.0 drops to 3.9 you have to take a hit to swap them.... too risky for GW1 imo.

Who woudl you recommend at 4.0?

Dzeko is good value i think, if he doesn't play a sub comes on, so no loss, if he does play he usually scores. I see your point but I think he's a good differential.

Not sure about Kone, he might not make the final cut... alternatives?

For 4.0, you are going to be getting defenders from newly promoted teams. It's hard to tell right now, since these teams are still bringing on more players, but I've been reading that Chester, Parr, and McShane are all likely nailed on 4.0.

Dzeko can be amazing value. But, you will be worried about whether or not he plays every week. Or, what happens when your 1st sub scores 10pts, and you just pray and pray that Dzeko doesn't play... and then he gets subbed on for 3 minutes at the end of the game? He can be great, but you will never have piece of mind.

For the 7.0 striker bracket: Wolf, Ruiz, Aspas, Graham, Altidore, Gayle, Cornelius, JRod, Vaz Te. Basically all of these have some downside/risk associated, but that is what happens in the lower price bracket. On the other hand, many of these could be reliable strikers who have very solid seasons.

Big hitter defence, well that's refreshing and ballsy. Punch, Dyer, Dzeko might not get a whole lot of game time. I would think Kone starts most of the games and is bound to do good.

Get some cheap mids who are nailed on and give the templates a run for their money! 🙂

New team after the DGW was confirmed.

    Mignolet (Alnwick)

Coleman - Terry - Collins (Clyne - Turner)

Bale - Hazard - Walcott - Silva Mirallas

    Lukaku - Jrod (Gayle)

Thoughts? Not sure about the front line, but it is bound to be a a reshuffle gw2 with one of the mids out to someone cheaper and lukaku to a more expensive option.

I like your midfield a lot, Silva is a bit risky but he can be swapped for Kagawa or Nolan etc which would free up funds if he flops. I'm not convinced by Terry, personally, I think Luiz, Cole or Ivan are much safer option. I'd also prefer rotating keepers but it's your call. Other than that I think it's a very good team. Well done.

In the comments section, someone wrote, Marca report that Modric met Levy for showdown talks last Wednesday in London, telling him: "You made me a promise. You promised me if we didn't qualify for the Champions League and a good offer turned up you'd listen to it."Well that offer has arrived and I want to play for Real Madrid. So keep your word and negotiate."I'm not interested in Manchester United or any other club. I only want to play for Real Madrid."

Marca used the same lines for modric. They are not worth the read.

I'm thinking maybe. Iva or Cahill could grab one of the starts. You never know, he's had a good run-up in the preseason, has no international games to worry about and Mourinho loves him (whether that affects his decisions to play him or not, I don't know).

Bottom line, I'd find the extra for Cole/Luiz (depending on how internationals go, minutes etc.) or Cech.

Yeah defensive points are a bit easier to predict. I'm going with hazard, but there's uncertainty on who will play in the 4 more advance positions, and is also harder to predict who will score or assist.

yeah...twas a bit tongue in cheek..but if ever there was a time to predict a goal fest it's these two games....So that'll be 0-0 and 0-1 then..!!!!!!

Cole seems to be the forgotten man of the Chelsea defence. I see lots of comments like 'No Chelsea defender is nailed on for the DGW' or 'Who is more nailed on Luiz, Terry or Ivan?'
Cole may not offer the attacking potential he once did but I guarantee he will play both games, barring injury.

Tinkering, thinking and deciding (atm) that Lamps will be my third blue. Saves an extra transfer as I'm dining on a strictly Lidl defence this year.

Gives me one or two weeks to decide on either Cout, Santi, Mirallas or Nolan. Who knows, a dark horse may come to the fore and I'll have the flexibility to get aboard.

Yeaaaaaaah... I dunno, I look at my team now and I don't have a single punt really. A bit boring. Aspas would be the one to vie, so I guess it depends on how Sturridge's fitness is looking. If Sturridge is fit for GW1, then it's definitely Lukaku-time.

The players aren't missing, Mourinho just said they might be tired. Given its a friendly we don't even know if everyone's going. Maybe Mata will have a mystery thigh strain that keeps him out just enough time to miss the international but play GW1. I think Lamps will start the season in the 1st team.

Here's an unusual team for the attention of would-be raters:

    Mignolet, (Boruc)
    Gibbs, Ivanovic, Assou-Ekotto (Clyne, Zabaleta)
Mirallas, Pilkington, Hazard (c), Bale (Sissoko)
    Lambert, Ruiz, Bony

There are reasons for these choices but any analysis would be appreciated, thanks 🙂

Yes, the relative poverty of the forwards concerns me; I'd switch Ruiz for Rodriguez and upgrade Lambert to whoever Spurs bought if they'd finally get their act together!
I like Ruiz, I think there's a possibility that his role in the hole could prove profitable. Preferred last season's price tag of 5.0 but for the moment he seems an interesting differential.

Shouldn't make a huge difference: you may have noticed that some of your players would appear to have scored goals, you may have even saw them scored, and then you see a slight drop in your points at the end of the week: some fool has been given the goal your player scored, and your player has been left with nothing more than an assist. which is great, but very depressing after you thought you'd gotten 4/5/6 points rather than 3. Ideally, that is what they are trying to stop happen.
