Norwich boss Chris Hughton made his seventh signing of the summer transfer window earlier today by acquiring long-term target Gary Hooper from Glasgow Celtic. The 25-year-old arrives at Carrow Road on a three-year deal – though the club have the option of another year – for a reported fee of around £5m and follows the likes of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Nathan Redmond, Leroy Fer and Martin Olsson to the club as Hughton looks to push on from last season’s eleventh place finish.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Hooper revealed his determination to prove himself in England’s top-flight after a highly successful stint at Parkhead under Neil Lennon:

“There’s been a lot of speculation going back to January and I’m pleased to have finally put pen to paper and joined Norwich. I can’t wait to get down to work, to get training with the lads and working with the coaching staff. I knew Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood from my youth days at Spurs so it will be great to be back working with them in the Premier League. I have scored goals at every level I have played at and the challenge of playing in the Premier League is really exciting to me.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Hooper was released by the north London club at the age of 14 back in 2002. His career got underway at Conference club Grays Athletic but, after scoring 20 times in 69 appearances, he was released again in the summer of 2006. Picked up by Southend United, he scored just twice in 32 appearances over two years and was farmed out on loan to Leyton Orient (four games, two goals) and Hereford United (19 matches, 11 goals) before Scunthorpe paid £175,000 for his services in July 2008.

Hooper’s eye for goal was instantly in evidence for Scunthorpe. A total of 24 goals in 45 league appearances in 2008/09 saw him voted Player of the Year and helped earn the club promotion to the Championship. The goals flowed once again the following season, with 19 strikes and six assists in 35 matches persuading Celtic to shell out over £2m in the summer of 2010.

Hooper wreaked havoc in his new surrounds and was the Hoops’ top scorer in each of his three seasons at Parkhead. In just 95 league appearances, he registered an eye-catching 63 goals and 24 assists, helping the club to a couple of league titles, with two Scottish Cups also accrued.

The Prospects

Having watched his side suffer back-to-back 1-0 pre-season friendly losses, Hughton has moved quickly to address a lack of attacking edge. While Norwich were decent defensively from a Fantasy perspective last term, chalking up 10 clean sheets, a 4-4-1-1 formation failed to harvest many goals – the Canaries found the net on just 41 occasions, a tally better than only Stoke (34) and relegated QPR (30).

The earlier arrival of Van Wolfswinkel had suggested Hughton would continue with his somewhat cautious approach and roll out a lone striker system once again but Norwich’s pre-season failings have perhaps led to a change of heart. Certainly, with over £13m spent on the pair, it’s fair to assume Hooper will now be expected to line up alongside the Dutchman in a 4-4-2, potentially handing Fantasy managers greater options amongst the Carrow Road squad.

Although the former Celtic star is a little more diminutive than Van Wolfswinkel (five foot nine to six foot one), Hughton’s new forwards have relatively similar attributes – both possess good movement in the box and a penchant for playing on the shoulder of the last defender – though Hooper’s renowned work ethic and link-up play may see him drop deep more often, with his unselfishness highlighted by that average of eight assists per season at Celtic.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a price of around 6.5 or 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards, bearing in mind that Van Wolfswinkel will set you back 7.0, whilst key creative force, Robert Snodgrass, is available for 6.5.

Hooper’s addition to the Canaries ranks now gives Fantasy managers something of a dilemma. While Snodgrass dominated the scene last term, there are now further options as we consider a kind batch of opening fixtures which has Hughton’s side play host to Everton, Southampton and Villa in the opening five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to Hull. Given his eye for goal, Hooper looks a more than viable target as we assemble our squads ahead of the season kick-off, with his arrival sure to bolster the Canaries chances of improving upon last term’s dire scoring record.

Gah. Buried at the end of last page.

Seen a few people talking about a change in assists this year. Any truth to this? I honestly can't remember if we got points from secondary assists last year. I think we did. Will we still? Does anyone know what this potential change is (if any at all)?

Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the final pass before a goal is scored. An assist is awarded whether the pass was intentional (that it actually creates the chance) or unintentional (that the player had to dribble the ball or an inadvertent touch or shot created the chance).

If an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, significantly altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is awarded.

      Rebounds
If a shot on goal is blocked by an opposition player, is saved by a goalkeeper or hits the woodwork, and a goal is scored from the rebound, then an assist is awarded.

      Own Goals
If a player shoots or passes the ball and forces an opposing player to put the ball in his own net, then an assist is awarded.

      Penalties and Free-Kicks
In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick is awarded an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

      Finalising Assists
Assist points awarded by Opta within Fantasy Premier League are calculated using additional stats which may differ from other websites. For example, some other sites would not show an assist where a player has won a penalty.

For the avoidance of doubt, points awarded in-game are subject to change up until one hour after the final whistle of the last match of any given day. Once the points have all been updated on that day, no further adjustments to points will be made.

I think Luiz will play both matches but I know Cech will barring injury. If you want that safety, I'd say option 2. I think a risk on option 1 could pay off plus the saving of a FT.

    GW1: JRod vs Weimann

Both of these players come in at the same value (6.0).

From what I've seen, JRod is featuring in a lot of people's thoughts and he was in my own until the announcement of the DGW but now I'm going with Weimann for three reasons:

    1. He scored against one of the DGW opponents (Arsenal) last season.

    2. At 6.0, he's cheap enough to be benched for the blank and even GW2, or just swapped for JRod.

    3. West Brom beat Southampton to nil in both matches last season (2-0 @Hawthorns & 3-0 @St. Mary's, the latter under Pochettino's management).

I've been looking for just one player from Villa as a minimum risk punt for the DGW and I think Weimann is that man.

Anyone else have any similar plans?

Seems like a good idea to me. I have JRod myself and have considered it. Though I'm trying to squeeze RVP in by GW4 with 3 Cheslea and may have to take a hit in GW2 if Chelsea prices start dropping. Don't think it will work for me but could pay off nicely.

I was a bit put off with ruddy myself, so I think I am going for foster. The forwards are probably going to rake the points in for the first week, but have you though about transfers in advance? 5 players won't be playing by gw 3 and that is a lot of assets to shift on.

Are RVP owners not concerned over his fitness? He had a good season injury wise, but he's picked up injuries in every Arsenal season. At 14m this is a risk we should consider. The possibility of having 14m in the bench its enough for me to look elsewhere.

Big ask to go another season without an injury of any kind, two seasons in a row is a big ask for any player really.RVP has quite an akward gait if you watch him closely.. he moves in an odd sort of angular fashion...Probably part of what makes him such a good player but also susceptible to injury...(quite a lot of the great players move in an unusual manner (gait) one way or another,,,Bale does)

Looks solid, but Giroud is just a disappointing fantasy asset. Your head tells you, "he is the lone striker for a great Arsenal side," but I had him week after week last year and he never lived up to the hype.

DGW players score exactly the same as everyone else in the long term, with the exception of the one you pick as captain. He is the only player to benefit you, as an extra captain for a single game.
So you're absolutely fine with just Hazard, so long as he's your captain. Just be sure and replace him for GW3 🙂

I owned in the first DGW last year. Then struggled for the next five weeks with the fallout from 6 average players. Of course, I got lucky with Cole and Hazard, but DGWs are a poisoned chalice.

My problem this season is RvP...I had him from the start last season and it was easy to captain him. With a team without him I will struggle more who to captain, but will have more money to spend. Hence a more "exciting" FPL-season. What are your opinions on that? Go for the secure or the wild? United seems like shit pre-season anyway...Ah...I just don't know...

    My team atm:

    Mannone / Davis

Terry / Mertesacker / Coleman (Baker / Ward)

Walcot / Bale / Hazard / Silva (Britton)

    Benteke / Lukaku / Campbell

Midfield is just abysmal. This is what your midfield scoreline is going to look like 4 out of 5 weeks:

Maybe....but Snodgrass did well last term, and Walters was in the top 20 MIDs....higher than many other "big names." My team is obviously built around Bale and RVP, as long as they do the business with captain status, then I reckon my other players can all do a decent enough job. Though I may reconsider Bellamy and Walter...but for me, Snodgrass is the best VFM of all MIDs. He is staying come what may 🙂

Snodgrass will score big 1 in every 5 weeks. Don't confuse good value for a big hitter. At 6.5, Snodgrass can be expected to put up a goal every 4-6 games or so (which is what he did last year). If he is your second best midfielder, you are going to have problems.

Think I've fallen into a template team here but it's the first one I'm overall satisfied with. Thoughts? Concerned with Newcastle defense though they have a great run GW2-7.

    Mannone/Westwood (Boruc)
    Cole--Collins--Clyne (S. Taylor, Chester)
    Bale--Hazard--Walcott--Snodgrass (Thomas)
    Aguero--Lukaku--Sturridge

Plan is to get in RVP ahead of GW4 for the hopeful destruction of Crystal Palace at OT.

DGW question that I haven't seen asked before....

How sensible is it to go with Aston Villa goalie for DGW? Two games they will concede in so 4 points to start with and then there are save points so maybe up to 6 in total and then 180 mins chance of saving a penalty?

    Anyone considered this?

17.5 to spend on my 3rd and 4th mids plus my third striker.
Who would be the best two to suit?

Was thinking Snodgrass, Brady and J.Rod, although I'm not that sold on Snoddy (someone please convince me).

Snoddy most likely still has set pieces and pens. He put in a great season last year and they're even better this year. Better targets for him to service. Think he could be one of the best values this year at 6.5m. I like your selections. Maybe Kaca or Campana?

      I am getting Koren.
      Good backup should be;
      Cheap
      Midfielder
      Attacking (preferably the hole)
      On set pieces
Nailed on (you dont want to bwasting transfers on the bench)
      Able of scoring
Have decent fixtures but not a huge factor as should be kept long term

For me, Koren meets all this better than any 4.5-5.0 midfielder.

Hull had injuries, namely Aluko. They've also bought more players this window in attack. They've also got Figueroa, which means they can let Brady play more games behind the striker too. Easy to get 37 games(including subs) out of 46 in the championship. He was released by West Brom last time he was in the Prem. Harder to keep up in the prem fitness wise, and he'll be 33 next year. Most fans on the forums see him as a bit part player this year.

    Cole nailed on for D/GW.
Reading between the lines of M's cryptic s I think Luiz will also be safe for D/GW.

Mata will be missing first game presumingly, Big headache is Haz _will he start both games?

And Lukaku what a huge game for him to keep Torres/Ba on the sidelines for a while. I think he will produce.
