The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

you wouldn't have a 2nd team for a full season though. you'd create it gw 1, set your captain and bench order and then not touch it at all the rest of the season, else you'd be disqualified

alrighty. Thought it'd be a fun little challenge and it's nice because after gw 1 you don't have to worry about it so it's not like a season long commitment which most people will get tired of after a while as they lose interest

at the end of the season we'd just have to check the winner's history to make sure they didn't make any transfers or changes throughout the season.

totally up to you if you want to change your league to that or not. if so, i'll help to promote it. if not, i'll probably go ahead and create my own

                    alright cool.

yeah that could be problematic... the key to this league imo is to make sure you have nailed on players and to make sure you have nailed on decent subs too for blanks and injuries

What is the word on Tonev for Aston Villa? I noticed that he did not play in villa's recent pre-season game.
Assuming that he is fit and relatively sure to start, I may take a punt on him. Given villa's fixtures, none of their players are really appealing for the dgw. But if I'm going to make a punt, I'd rather do it with a 5.0 attacking midfielder rather than a 9.0 striker.

First post back on FFS so hello all 🙂

Just got a question about keepers. I've read the Player Analysis on GK's and at the moment I've got Speroni and McGregor in goals. Not confident in CS's but they have good rotation. I'm not going Boruc for one of them as I've got Clyne (hate doubling up). Is this the best partnership for a low price? Would make funds for Mignolet but I'd rather get Toure at 0.5 cheaper.

TL;DR: What is the best keeper budget partnership in your opinion?

    Cheers 🙂

My theory is that you have rotations to increase the chance of gettng clean sheets.

I think Palace and Hull's defence's are not good enough to get CSs even at home so having them rotate won't be that advantageous. For 0.5m more you can have Mignolet and a 4.0m or Boruc and Foster. They would be my preferred GK combos

        Thanks chuck! 🙂

I've looked at that combo as well, and with some reading on here I've been turned off by WBA's CS appeal. Something like in the last 26 games they got the same amount of CS as there first 12. Which pretty much means they're unstable, worth looking at though 🙂

      Welcome back 🙂

Currently got Boruc and Mannone, decent rotation and I feel like they will get more clean sheets, however they might get less saves due to a stronger defence. Both are good options, plus it leaves you with 0.5m that you wouldn't have if you went with Mignolet.

Otherwise quite nice setup. Personally I'm staying clear of Silva but If he plays like 11-12 then he'll be great.

yeah he is. my hope is he'll get decent gametime (maybe a start the first game followed by a sub appearance the second game which isn't bad imo considering the fixtures) especially since mata might not play the first game. and penalties aside, I think he has a greater upside than lampard who i'm also considering. that and I believe Mou likes him given comments made previously and some have even said that he was a Mou signing

cheers! yeah good point about silva. that's why i'm hoping to squeeze walcott in

exactly. yupp. though the difference I see is that Lukaku is better than ba and torres and has the opportunity to have a breakout season in my opinion whereas Schurrle has more competition from mata, hazard, and oscar along with all the other mids chelsea has

A unique team, I like it. There are doubts over Schurrle starting both games, thoughts on that? I feel as though he will be involved in the first game with Mata tired. Additionally, if Mourinho decides to go with 4-3-3 then only two wing/attacking midfield spots are available.

As for the Toure situation, best to wait and see if he'll be a starter.

thanks. definitely doubts. it's a big risk but one I might be willing to take. see my thoughts just above.

very true about a 433 but hasn't Mou made comments that his favored formation is a 4231? meaning there should be 3 spots

yeah definitely. hoping either toure or alcaraz is a starter so I can squeeze .5 and get walcott over silva

I'd play Lamps ahead of him but I took Lamps out of mine completely as their mf is such a guessing game. Currently going Haz Cole Terry plus Rooney. If Rooney doesn't transfer I'll probably go in with Haz and Cole.

Prefer Luiz and Ivan but again not sure how much they will play in the dgw. I can see him playing Terry both games.

Lukaku seems set to start the first one. I feel Mourinho may go with Torres/Ba for the Villa game. It also depends on which forward Mourinho sees as best fit to start against United? Although that game is on the following Monday and does give plenty of resting time for the players.

A lot of people on the CFC forum have Ba starting in their 'Predicted Lineups' - it seems 50/50 at the moment.

I think you have too look at the situation without any FPL bias...Lukaku has been a bit overrated on this site, from a general football perspective you'd have to say Torres is still first choice with Ba and Lukaku playing bit parts this season.

I've just read yet again how Suarez believes he is treated badly by the press in the UK!

Gerard Kinsella is a 21 year old footballer whose career has been ended because he took a pain killing injection for a shoulder injury. The painkiller included an anabolic steroid. I would imagine he knew nothing about this. He has been treated badly

Suarez in his career has PHYSICALLY ASSAULTED AND BITTEN 2 PEOPLE!!!!!!!
He has been suspended for a few weeks on about $150,000/week!!!!

    Hi, DZ.
My first attempt at a team after the DGW was announced.

    Mignolet, (Alnwick),
    Terry, Koscielny, Collins, (Clyne, Turner),
    Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Snodgrass, (Cabral),
    Benteke, Lukaku, Anelka.

Have 1.0 in bank, I want to have some emergency money.

    How does it look?

This team is set to ring strong rewards for the first gameweek! Each player has a strong opening fixture. Clyne on the bench and the 1.0mill spare allows for some rearranging for GW2 🙂

My only concern would be Terry - how sure are we that he will play both games? He did at the beginning of last year. Mourinho will use him more sparingly though..

      A. Lukaku is a punt but many of the Chelsea options are. Since it looks like you're only getting two Chelsea, Cech becomes less important; though any tripling up should have him IMO (eases benching concerns in the weeks following the double). Cole should be a safe bet but something I can't put my finger on dissuades me from picking Kone.

    Two questions:

    1) Is a defence of Clyne, Collins, Murner (Burner, Chester) too cheap? It does allow for a lot of money in midfield/attack

Hi deadzoners, my first appearance this year (taking a break from AFL dreamteam obsession). The first thing I notice are loads of similar mids around the 6.5-8.5 price that could make or break our seasons.
From quality players in rotation like Oscar, Lampard and the MU mids to potentially under priced players like Wilshire, Mirallas, Bellamy and Ben Arfa.

If you had to pick 2 mids for 15m who would it be?
I'm currently on Kagawa and Wilshire

This is the rest of my team for reference
    Czech (boruc)
    Kos, Collins, Coleman, Chester, Burner
    Bale, hazard, Thomas, X, X
    Aguero, JRod, Lukaku

Hoping for some more of the DZ gold that helped me so much last year, cheers guys.

Welcome back mate, I've basically given up on my dream team so I'm focusing on FPL now 😉

I reckon Miralllas/HBA/Nolan/Snodgrass are your best bets. I currently have Mirallas and Snodgrass, which gave me enough cash to get some nice upgrades. Get Kagawa if Rooney leaves, but if he doesn't then don't get him. Wilshere could be a good pick up this season, but there are better options. Hope that helps 🙂

definitely not kagawa and wilshire imo. kagawa is a wait and see and I don't think wilshire is a good fantasy asset.

i'd look at two of walcott, silva, mirallas, snodgrass, nolan
for gw one I might take a punt on oscar, schurrle, or lamps

dempsey is also one to keep an eye on

schurrle/lamps + nolan from the start perhaps and then the chelsea mid could be swapped out for mirallas or a united mid

You make a good point. We will be living on our wits from the off this time around; there seem to be relatively few safe picks; many potentially explosive/desultory picks to offset them.

I feel both Kags and Wilshere are risks. I'd go maybe for one but not the other; we don't want our teams to be too safe and lacklustre but risky picks for two important midfield spots might be a gamble too far. I'm rambling...I'll let others with better ideas suggest some 🙂

Is anyone considering doubling up on Chelsea defenders for the DGW? It seems some defenders and Hazard are the only nailed on players for both games. Hazard, Luiz, Cole/Ivan could prove immense. With Hull and Villa at home how can they be denied two clean sheets on top of any attacking points?

      benteke is how

I'm looking at hazard and lukaku for sure and possibly lamps or schurrle as my third chelsea player. I think they'll score lots of goals but not sure about them keeping clean sheets. not to mention I wouldn't want a defender for the united game and i'd rather have an arsenal or liverpool defender long term given their price so I'd be using a transfer on a defender after one week which doesn't appeal muchh to me

you asked "how can they be denied two clean sheets...?" and so I responded "benteke is how"

no they aren't but with those fixtures I'd be happy with one start and one sub appearance.

and tbh very few are guaranteed to play both games. hazard is one, cech is another, and cashley is yet another. maybe essien too? besides that I can't see anyone else guaranteed. torres, ba, and lukaku all options up front, mata probably won't play first game due to game in Ecuador, oscar schurrle de bruyune and maybe even ramires will be competing for attacking midfield slots. lamps might not play both games. ivanovic could play rb instead of azpi or could even be on the bench, ivanovic cahill terry and luiz all fighting it out for two cb spots. so the way I see it is besides hazard you're gunna have to take a gamble unless you go for cech and cashley but i'd want at two attackers personally

Benteke has only 1 goal in 10 games against top opponents apparently so I'm not sure Benteke is how.

You are right that few are guaranteed to play both games. I believe as a result of recent comments that Luiz is nailed on. So Luiz, Cole, Hazard, Benteke would be the safest options.

depends how you define top opponents. but he scored against liverpool in both games last year I believe and he also scored against our team in question, Chelsea.

fair enough. i'm not a fan of double chelsea defense for this though when there's a potential for a large amount of attacking points

CL teams and Spurs. Reason enough to avoid for Arsenal, Chelsea. For the record I'm not 100% one way or the other but it is a big factor to consider.

The safest group of players (not including GK) would surely have to be Luiz, Cole, Hazard, Benteke. 4 nailed on and decent DGW options.

How is Luiz safe or nailed on?

He hasnt played a minute of pre season yet and no one knows if Mourhino likes him as a player yet.

There Is a lot of competition in defence and as a defensive midfielder, only players that seem safe are Cech and Cole because they have no real competition for their place, everyone else is high risk.

"For me, Luiz is a central defender. I think he has an important quality for the football we want to play, which is to build. He’s comfortable using the ball from the back.

In this aspect, he’s very important and different from the other central defenders. He can improve, everybody can. From a defensive point of view, he can be much more effective, much more solid. But, for me, the potential is incredible, amazing. He has to play always."

          Mourinho

Thats pretty conclusive if you ask me. If fit he will play.

Will be Cardiffs most important player due to his experience at this level, there are less games in this league than the Championship so dont see him getting rotated as many think as its only one game a week and he can do that, he will miss the odd game but so does everyone.

His first 3 fixtures are good even though some will say different, he plays two of his old teams which he will be up for and they play 2 games at home where there fans will create an atmosphere that will pump Cardiff up to go for it.

Ignore the obvious comments by some, think deeper.

well last year I only got my membership at christmas...just winged it before that and then used the RMT (as a tool anyway) after that...in the end I got a good score

so this year I decided to be more scientific about it

so last night, using the RMT, I put together a very interesting team of cheapo players...then I added Hazard...altogether this cost me £80m

now I'm going through it position by position looking to see just where I should spend my last £20m

let's just say I found it a very worthwhile exercise and it changed quite a few of my assumptions...(as part of the deal I'm looking for errors in the RMT of course and I certainly found one biggie)

I'd be interested what you think about all that

dunno...this is where we need a members forum...now I feel mean and a bit foolish...but it's not fair on Mark to start listing all the players the RMT likes

                sorry

I just wondered if you were doing something similar really?...I'd assumed you were a member?

4 goals and 8 assists last year in 28 games. Not bad I suppose but surely there are better options at that price with better fixtures. I'm also unsure how much value can be put on Bellamy standing out against 2 of his old teams. Exactly how many 'old teams' does Bellamy have?

The 4.5 to 5.5 range for midfielders is the worse in the game, I challange you to find a better option that will play as much, be as key for his team, will play in attacking areas and is proven at this level.

Please dont come back with Sheep responses like Jarvis Koren s and Brady, a real name ease so we can all see who you think are better options, I have studdied it hard and there are none

Did you see that post about fixture proof players a few weeks ago? Benteke was rated as a flat track bully. He'll happily score a hat trick against some rubbish team at home but will do nothing against Arsenal and Chelsea away. The most likely outcome is he scores 4pts in the DGW which you then have to spend to ditch him, leaving you on 0, when any other striker will bring in at least 2 for GW1.

I'm quite surprised with lack of De Bryune love in RMTs.
He was the best Chelsea player in pre season till he was injured.Injury ain't that bad & he's flying to US for another Tour again. As a Chelsea fan,I followed all friendlies live.My Conclusion is KDB is the best player in the right flank we have currently!
If anyone doesn't know, he was the only Non-Bayern & Non-Dortmund Bundesliga player to make it in Team of the Season.
Lukaku will start against Hull bt I doubt he does against Villa. So, My Chelsea players for the DGW will be Luiz,Hazard(C) & De Bruyne. A lot can change during US friendly bt I m set on this now!
    Cheers! 🙂

As a general tip pick players, especially the big ones, based on whether you think they will score big points rather than based on ownership. If Bale stays, plays as well as he did last year then you've put yourself at a disadvantage by not picking him just because other people have him.

Having said that, if Real have bid over £80m then he's going for sure.

Bale is a big outlay to be fair. Things will shake up a bit when he signs for Real Madrid though.

Well I remember how they couldn't keep a clean sheet last season and how bale ended up bullying the points fpl wise. Think I will stick.

As a note from last season I decided to worry less about fixtures and concentrate on getting the best players.

Let's hope the Swans don't sign another forward. Really backing Bony when his fixtures ease.

they're pretty mean usually so a wicked part of me is wondering if they've offered E20m + Modric and just called it E100m in the press
