The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hey guys,

I am going nuts with trying to settle on my starting 11.

If anyone can help me with these question, I'd be much appreciative.

1: Best budget defenders who will see regular game time.
    2: Nolan worth it?
3: Is having Bony, Benteke, Lukaku as my starting strikers risky?

    Cheers!

Chester and Collins are good budget buys.
Nolan is great for the first 6 GWs. i am surprised nobody has mentioned West Hams good opening fixtures. He might lead the attack in Carrols absence.
Bony is looking good. But Lukaku won't get minutes and Benteke won't be affective. But this is what i think, maybe wrong. Goodluck with your team

At this point they are all equal for Jose. Whoever hits the form early will get the nod. But chelsea are known to play 4-5-1 and the 3 will rotate mostly. I don't think any of them will get full 90 min in any match. So wait till we know. Till then the safe option for Chelsea cover is Hazard or Mata

can't agree with any of this. Bony is facing competition as Laudrup looks to buy another striker (see my earlier post), Benteke is as nailed-on as it gets, and if CHE stays as is, Lukaku will start ahead of Ba and Torres

Plenty of people will be starting with those two, you won't be alone! Benteke is virtually fixture-proof, and a beast with the top teams so don't let the Ars/Che fixtures put you off. Lukaku is having an amazing pre-season as he looks to impress Mourinho for starts

      1. Collins, Amorebieta, Clyne/Shaw, Turner/Olsson, Yanga-Mbiwa.
Vertonghen's CB replacement should come in at 5.0, Lescott is 5.5 and may play with Nastasic's injury. K Toure is 5.0 and may start.

      2. Nolan is definitely worth it. A mid-price alternative that has a history of goal-scoring and some amazing fixtures comping up. Apart from Mirallas/KDB are there any other options at that price?

      3. In my opinion yes. Benteke and Lukaku will both have blanks coming up, so unless you plan to WC soon afterwards you may have to sacrifice some points. Bony will be playing for Cote D'Ivoire against Mexico in New York just days before the game against United. He faces a long trip back, not to mention competition with Michu and a potential new Swansea striker.

I'm not sure. United need both a creative central player and a ball winning brute. Many people mistake Fellaini for the latter but the truth is most of his good work for Everton was in the hole where Kagawa or Rooney play. When stuck back at DM I have doubts on whether technically he is good enough for the CL.

Baker is competing against Vlaar (4.5), Ciaran Clark (4.5), and new signing Jores Okore (4.5) for a centre-back role in Villa’s back 4.

Vlaar looks the most secure, but Baker faces stiff competition from Okore to keep his place. However, Okore picked up an injury in pre-season, so Baker may have an edge on fitness.

Villa are unlikely to get many clean sheets, but Baker does offer a great threat from set pieces.

Fantasy managers are confident that he will nail down a role. A whopping 20% have chosen him so far

Lampard to start the 1st, doubt 2 new boys will start first game as Mou wants to make a statement. Oscar won't play that deep.

Lampard to get rested for the 2nd, striker is dependent on Lukaku. The international guys likely to get a run out. Ramires should start this one.

Hey guys i would like to suggest that when rating others teams let up be open minded about it. Most of the people have a fixed team in their mind ( which is off course their own team ) and they tell others to buy the same players. Thus most of the teams here are similar. This will be a huge disadvantage to start the season.

Secondly i haven't seen a lot of people who play the fixtures. Ex. Nolan and Ben Arfa have some great opening games. But most of the people buy Benteke, but we know that Aston Villa always start bad and they only come to form during the last few games when they are in the drop zone. Even Benteke scored most of the goals in the second half.

I think you have to accept that if you post RMTs, people are giving you advice based on their own teams/opinions - what else can you do afterall? Best thing is to take in lots of advice, but then go with your gut/do your own research

    Mignolet
    Ivanovic - Mertesacker - Collins
    Snodgrass - Nolan - Hazard - Bale
    Benteke - Lukaku - Giroud

    Etheridge - Thomas - Chester - Brady

    Bank: £1.0m

I'm having second thoughts about having Benteke as I already have three CHE players. Has a blank in GW3 and this inclusion will mean some hits in GW3. Also, would you go for Ivanovic or risk having Terry?

Benteke didn't score well against the top teams last season. However, using past trends to predict the future is an exercise that must be done with caution. All it takes is one goal..

If you have him in now, your taking a 'potential' transfer hit for him in. So picture this - if this wasn't the first gameweek of the season, and you didn't have unlimited transfers, would you bring Benteke in for a point hit? Also knowing that he has a blank in a couple of weeks?

My first take on this was a double for Benteke, meaning great investment for fantasy points should he score one and assist another. Like everybody else, I want to make sure I kick off to a good start and avoid playing catch up like the previous season.

It all depends on circumstances - like my overall rank and situations with players - if such recruitment will bring any negative influence, but if I were to decide with that scenario you put out, I wouldn't ship him in for a point hit knowing that he will miss games ahead. This time, I have unlimited transfers and everything to everyone is all speculations.

That is true - Benteke can join the list of one-season wonders, or truly assert himself as a world-class striker. It is safer to have him in your side, if you are content without the other options i.e City strikers, Sturridge. If you are wildcarding for GW2, your decision will be easier too.

I am leaning towards putting CECH in as my defender from CHE in GW1. Doing a WC between gw 2 and 3, and certainly fielding 3 Chelsea players in GW1.

    Cech:

+ the top scoring defender from CHE last season
+ will most certainly play both matches

    - lacks the goalscoring and assist potential

all these 6 players: cole, terry, cahill, azpil, ivanovich and luiz might get 1 or 2 of the GW1 matches right? there might even be a chance of betrand getting some minutes.

    Thoughts anyone?

Fernandinho's stats for Shaktar are strong. In 183 games for the domestic league, he had 31 goals, 38 assists.

Shaktar would have dominated their league and this may skew the stats. But won't Man City do the same?

agreed. What I meant was though. Get ride of Lukaku for Kun in GW2, then Kun to RvP in GW4. Tekkers can leave GW3 either for Berba or someone around that range which frees up most of the remaining money I'll need for RvP.

Silva is not a captaincy option.

Been reading up on Villa this morning. There is still concern over how weak they are at defending corners with Clark & Vlaar as a pairing.

Didn't Villa roll out a 3 man defence last year at one point when they had similar problems? Could it be that come mid-season the team playing 3-5-2 with wing-backs ends up being Villa instead of Everton? Lowton and Luna seem ideally suited for it

That will be the Villa back four. At 4.5 Vlaar is the standout pick for me, but only for my watchlist. Let them get their early fixtures out the way first, better options are out there

I am sort of interested in Vlaar, but I just don't see Villa keeping ANY clean sheets. Shame.

Had Clark here as well. Was set on kicking his butt off the boat after the red then 11 points came next game - can't remember if it's 9 or 11.

Reason I asked is 4.0m to 4.5m of almost every player in Villa is pretty cheap and if they do improve at the back, their defence is good to look into if we're looking for budget defenders.

I like the last one but would probably play Jarvis for the first 6 straight off

Redmonds fantastic if he starts but I highly doubt he will especially now Hooper has signed which could cause them to go 442

Would be nice if the big dog Carroll was back for GW2, ideal Lukaku replacement
