The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Jarvis is looking good in pre-season, though judging players on pre-season is risky.

That said, 5.5mill is not much for a gamble.

I will be going for Nolan; much higher goal threat and proven track record over several seasons.

Nailed on with a SLEDGEHAMMER mate 🙂 !

Has his share of set pieces, plays in the hole.

Obviously when Whittignham plays he hogs all set pieces, but like I said Witt was out for favour tail end of last season.

Kim scored yesterday, Bellamy assist. 😉

Go in GW1 with Lukaku, Tekkers and Anelka

GW2 Luiz and Lukaku ➡ Mert and Kun

GW3 Hazard to 6.5/7 mid and maybe Tekkers to Sturridge
    GW4 Kun to RvP

Hehe, which is why I'm seriously considering going with 3 DGW players only. I think if we can manage to put out a nice DGW team keeping the minimum to only 3 DGW-ers, we can reduce the take on hits with wisdom.

to get RvP in for GW4 will require at least 1 hit if you take 3x Chelsea. But if I ignore Tekkers it can be done with just 1.

I'm ignoring Tekkers, awful double and then a blank.

I could do without it, I may have to make changes for non-playing or injured players so planning to take a hit is not for me...

Could pay off though with the double.

imo, the best Chelsea coverage to start is to leave the forwards alone as there is no guarantee they will play both matches and go with Hazard (or Lamps/Mata) and a nailed on defender. 2 of those options should be plenty. 3 is too much here imo.

    Mannone, Boruc
Koscielny, B Turner, Collins, Coleman, Clyne
    Walcott, Bale, Hazard, Snoddy,Thomas
    Augero, Sturridge, Anelka

Considering downgrading Coleman to Alcaraz so that I can either bring in Mignolet and a 4.0 reserve keeper or upgrade Snoddy to Nolan.

Thanks. The keepers situation is a tough one. My experience is that second guessing keeper points by rotating between mid-budget keepers is a frustrating exercise. So leaning towards Migs and a 4 on the bench and just keeping is like that. Also curious to see whether Anelka is nailed on? I see talk of Clark bringing in another striker but is also full of praise for Nic in pre-season. And he looks great value if he does start. It allows me to bring in Augero who has the value needed to facilitate a move for RVP in GW4.

So I've narrowed down the options to the following. The picks on Aguero and Nolan are mainly due to favourable fixtures, option A has one DGW-er while B has two. Other DGW-ers are Hazard and Lukaku. Picked Clyne for potential attacking returns and I also believed the Saints will do well defensively early on.

    (A) Aguero, Lampard (x2) and Clyne.
    (B) Benteke (x2), Nolan and Ivanovic (x2).

    Hi Fantasy Football Scout

Was all set going with Cech, Luis, Hazard for the double gameweek but it now seems a bit silly to go with Cech. Would it not be better just to go with Mignolet at HOME to Stoke?

Sure Cech will probably get 12 points compared to Mignolets 6 points but then you have an extra 1 million to spend elsewhere in the team + having to waste a transfer on getting Cech out because you don't really want a 6.5 million goalkeeper.

    Thoughts? Opinions? Angry Insults?

I'm sticking with Mannone and Boruc, which gives me an extra 1.5m to spend on other areas. Might not get the 6 points but would still have decent coverage all over the team. Your idea is good though, and Migs has a better run than Cech after the DGW.

I don't really want a 6-6.5 million chelsea defender either so would still need to use a transfer

I've been toying with bringing in Lukaku but there really is no assurance that he will even come off the bench in the second game, assuming he starts the first one. If Torres starts the second one, given his time off because of international endeavours, then it might be Ba (or neither of them) that gest some game time. And again no assurance that Lukaku will start the first one. If Jose decides that his physicality might be best used against Utd in game 3, he might be used sparingly. The way I see it, you have to find the right balance in your team between players who can bring you instant value and those who you foresee staying in your team long-term. Lukaku might be the former and that is your risk but over the first 6 games, not sure he is worth the risk.

I'm going with Hazard (c), Luiz and Lukaku. Not at all worried by Lukaku's game time (or lack of) - I seem to remember he didn't start his last league game and that turned out ok...

... And that's not the first time he's been EXPLOSIVE off the WBA bench 🙂 !

Exactly. Neither Ba not Torres have a great track record for when they come off the bench. And in a DGW where there's no guaranteed striker to play both games, that's what you're looking for.
