The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area on Friday morning. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Over the course of the next few days we’re going to be focusing on both and, in particular, the Rate My Team tool. I’ve got together with its creator, Chris Atkinson, to create a three-part series which explains how the tool is used and provide an insight into is methods and the work that goes into producing the results on show.

The series begins today with the first movie previewing the Projections that are powered by Rate My Team, before moving to focus on the Player List feature with a demonstration on how this can be used. This will be followed by an insight into the Build My Team component and, finally, the series will be concluded with lengthy movie for the real stat buffs who are looking for insight on the mechanics behind the tool.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

Registered users can click here to upgrade their account.

New users can click here to sign up.

For further details on the benefits offered by our membership, view this page.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team†statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient. Factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

Why do the stats show decimal places?
The values returned by the model are not exact values – they are not figures that state what a player will score for a particular stat but a value which indicates their expected return. As such, the model can be more accurate when producing data with decimal places.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections every day (an update is imminent this evening) up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Pretty much, depending on whether you think he's fixture proof or not. There's a mini-Weimann bandwagon going if you've got 6.0 to spend and are going to wildcard early.

Surely as Mig +4m is the same as foster + Boruc this is more a question of Clyne or Toure. Granted with Boruc it gives double Soton, but that extra 0.5m could come in handy. I know I've wished for an extra 0.5 already about 10 times.

A - Liverpool 16 clean sheets last season. Can see them matching or beating this. With Foster/ Boruc max 10 clean sheets each over season assuming you select the right keeper 75% of the time is 15 c/s. I wouldn't take the risk on picking the wrong one and stick with Mings

Jarvis looks interesting, get a lot of game time last year and I think that can only increase this year, he has played well in preseason and at 5.5 he could be a real steal. I'm not so sure about Diame as he seems far too defensive minded to be a huge fantasy point scorer. Another one who looks interesting for a similar price is Morrison at 6.0, have a look at him if you think you can squeeze another 0.5

Captaincy Is Key. We all face two basic decisions at this point: who will be our lower value squad players, and who will we splurge the big money on. The first decision is important, but I'd argue it's the second which will make or break you for one reason: the captaincy.

So, with that in mind, looking at the first 10 weeks, imagine you could captain ANY player in the game each week... Who would it be each week?

For me it goes: Hazard, Bale, Aguero, RvP, Bale, RvP, Bale, RvP, RvP, Aguero.

Two observations. RvP looks "essential" from GW4. If Bale goes, a Liverpool player might be a decent replacement in our squads: avl, SOT, CPL are the fixtures they'd have in Bale's captaincy weeks.

So, are you lot lining up for the all important armband?

yeah...did you do the comparison Jonny ?..it's well worth a look...Suarez beats the pair of them hands down in every respect apart from RVP scoring from less chances (clinical)....That single factor contributed to a large number of 3 BAPS for him last season...(obviously six as (c))...but i don't think the "clinical" factor for goals will be as important this year under the new system so he'll lose some advantage....Other than that Suarez is right up there, and better in a lot of respects...

Anyone leaning towards taking a punt on Dzeko? He's played well in pre season, was a reasonable impact sub last year and Pellegrini has heaped praise on Dzeko recently (Sky Sports). Could be worth the risk at 7.5 for some Man City coverage in the early weeks where they have some favorable opposition.

It means the application wasn't submitted....Not blackballing anyone. Your details will show up immediately on that page after submission, so it can't be pending either.

        Liverpool v Thailand
Line-up: Mignolet, Enrique, Agger, Toure, Johnson, Lucas, Allen, Gerrard, Coutinho, Aspas, Borini.

Subs: Jones, Skrtel, Kelly, Flanagan, Suarez, Spearing, Wisdom, Robinson, Henderson, Alberto, Downing, Sterling, Ibe, Coates, Assaidi, Ward.

Is it 4-3-3 line-up by Liverpool? looks like a first team except for borini

Toure definitely looks first choice at the moment. As long as they don't buy another centre back, he's a bargain at 5.0.

        Terry-Mert-Collins-Zableta-(McNaughton)

        Bale-Hazard-Silva-(Colback- J.Williams)

        J.Rod-Aguero-Lukaku-

What do you think? dont think its amazing but not sure where to improve, suggestions?

In my humble opinion, you have too much invested in Def. If that is your preferred formation, you still don't Arsenal cover. Perhaps Walcott for Silva. Terry also not nailed on. Maybe CAshley instead. And better cheaper options than McN, Colback and Williams. Look at Koren to beef the midfield up a bit.

The Spurs ITKs all have Soldado medical happening tomorrow. What do we think for FPL price? Anything less than 10 is a steal IMO, quality finisher exactly what was needed.

Don't worry dude, only Daily Mail/Mail on Sun are regurgitating all the La Marca rubbish. Credible news i.e. SSN all say he is signing a new contract. One of the articles was just a recycled version of the Luka Modric interview from 2 years ago FFS - http://www.dearmrlevy.com/dml/2013/7/26/marca-satire

That lad was me, i think.

The latest "news" is that Bale had wanted to stay one more season so RM backed off. In the last few days RM have begun a new assault, starting with all the rehashed Modric quotes in Marca. Apparently they have also told Bale "now or never". his head has now been turned but apparently the bid is well below what is being reported.

This is all second hand ITK but from "reputable" sources.

With this team which option should I take:

        Mignolet...Boruc
        Coleman...Clyne...Collins....Luiz...Turner
        Mirallas...Bale...Hazard...Coutinho...Bellamy
        Lukaku...Lambert...Anelka

        A: Coutinho ---> Walcott
        B: Keep Coutinho (save 0.5M)
        C: Make other suggested changes?

        RMT, start GW1

        Mingolet

        Baker/Mert/Azpill/Coleman

        Bale/Lampard/Hazard

        RVP/Anelka/Kone

I'm unsure about Lampard -> Oscar?

I wanna get Walcott and Mirallas in there after GW1, but wanna risk stacking with Chelsea players in GW1.
