Steve Bruce continued his summer shopping spree late last week by acquiring Yannick Sagbo from French club Evian. The Ivory Coast international arrives at the KC Stadium on a two-year contract for a reported fee of £3m and is the Tigers’ eighth signing of the close-season as Bruce bolsters his squad after a second place finish in last season’s Championship.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old – who is the half-brother of West Ham’s Guy Demel – went on the charm offensive as he spoke about his intentions for the season ahead:

“I can’t wait to get going, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates this weekend. I want to show the coaches and the fans what I’m all about, but not just with my physical presence. I also hope that my mobility and technical skills can add to what is already a good footballing team. I was delighted when the call came through. I had a very good feeling from the manager, that he really wanted me to come to Hull. That feeling was mutual. I am excited to get started in the Premier League. It is a league that I’ve watched closely, and I know all about it. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I aim to score many goals.”

The History

A product of the Monaco youth academy, Sagbo turned out 20 times for the club between 2009 and 2010 but failed to find the net once. Snapped up by then-second division French side Evian prior to the closure of the 2010/11 summer transfer window, his contribution of nine goals and five assists in 31 appearances helped his new club clinch promotion to Ligue 1.

Over a couple of campaigns in France’s top-flight, Sagbo’s scoring record has been respectable, if somewhat less than prolific – 16 goals and nine assists from 68 matches, though 15 of those appearances arrived off the bench. On the international stage, he has notched twice in five games for the Ivory Coast Under 23s and has featured once for the Elephants’ senior side.

The Prospects

With Hull expected to retain their 3-5-2 formation for the season ahead, Sagbo is likely to be tasked with partnering Danny Graham up top, climbing ahead of the likes of Sone Aluko, George Boyd and Matty Fryatt in the pecking order. Bruce is desperate to increase the Tigers’ firepower after they notched a mere 61 goals in 46 games in the Championship last term – bearing in mind Hull have scored once in their last three pre-season games (courtesy of a converted spot-kick), their failings in attack are already obvious.

The Hull boss was quick to praise his new recruit, though, and suggested the addition of Sagbo will afford his side a more physical dimension up front:

“He is something different to what we have got. You look at (Christian) Benteke before he went to Aston Villa, he didn’t have a prolific goalscoring record but he had all the attributes to play in the Premier league. He is big, strong, powerful and quick, and our boy is a little bit like that too.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of around 5.0 seems the likeliest scenario for the Ivory Coast international – while Graham is the most expensive Hull forward option at 5.5, his initial cost was set as a Sunderland player.

Given their current toils in attack, it’s perhaps debatable as to whether many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Hull as a viable source of attacking points, though their opening home schedule affords Bruce’s side a decent chance to make a mark, with Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace the first six visitors to the KC. Results in these games will surely be vital to their chances of beating the drop.

Indeed, pairing Sagbo with a Crystal Palace option would give you 11 kind looking home fixtures (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, CPL, WHM, CAR) in the opening 15 Gameweeks – an option for those considering a rotation partnership with Eagles forward Dwight Gayle (5.0) or winger Jerome Thomas, who comes in even cheaper at just 4.5 following his move from West Brom earlier in the summer.

First RMT of the season. Go easy.

    Mignolet (Cornell)
    Luiz Zabaleta Reid (Turner) (Ward)
    Walcott Bale Coutinho Hazard (Koren)
    Lukaku Anelka JRod

Obviously, I'll act accordingly if Bale does depart for Madrid.

    A few questions otherwise:

    1. Is there a cheaper, nailed on defender for West Ham? I.e. Collins?
    2. Is Zabaleta worth the extra 0.5 over Natastic?

    Thanks in advance!

    Another Chelsea DGW1 then...

Currently looking at Cole, Mata & Hazard...

Striker spot is too dodgy imo (especially with 3 days between games) and Cole probably the best bet to start both apart from Cech.

    What's the consensus on here?

Cole is always the best bet for starts, but it's a DGW, and he's got no attacking threat these days coupled with most probably selling their chelsea defender after. I'd take a punt on Luiz/Ivanovic/Terry. People really regretted going with Cole last season.

I've gone with Lukaku because he can do alot coming off the bench too, and he should be a lock to start 1 game atleast. Also fancy him to outscore Benteke, and gives me the option of seeing how other strikers perform and get a better idea of who to buy from GW 2.

        Good point re Lukaku.

I'd love to go with Iva, he was a beast at the start for me last year. Cole may rediscover his offensive potential under Mou, but I do agree that he looks far from threatening as things stand.

Good point about Lukaku Demi. My way currently has great Mid (Haz, Oscar, Wally, Bale) but 2x £6m strikers. It ain't perfect to say the least.

Yeah i've pretty much got the same. More value in the midfielders, atleast from the start. Not a bad shout to go cheap from the start, as there's question marks with the more premium strikers. Can always transfer them out if they fail in their good fixtures. I would just rather play safe from the start rather than swap my funds around to get better strikers who then don't start, or don't justify their price.

I'm refusing to plan it, but the DGW makes a strong case for post GW1 WC. Worked really well last season, and if 3-4 player prices start moving fast Sun/Mon, it' will be a strong option.

My gut instinct is that Romelu will start Hull, benched but poss sub appearance Villa (Torres to start), but then Rooney comes in. IF so, he'll be a very compelling CHE attack option.

I saw someone asking for an Everton fan's guess at the new starting line up. I don't know if there are any other fans apart from me and tobesthetoffee but he is not on much so here goes my guess.

Sorry in advance, this will most likely be of no help because I am as clueless as you. Anyway, the players in CAPS are players that are nailed on, lower case are in contention. Players not included don't have a chance imo.

HOWARD ( can't see Robles knocking him off in the league)
robles (a few appearances but a cup goalkeeper in my opinion)

    BAINES (hope he stays)
COLEMAN (great player, fan favourite and no competition)
    JAGS (our new C)
distin (can be injury prone and alcaraz will be competing if not playing 3 at the back)
alcaraz (see above and one of martinez's favourites)

FELLAINI (if we are lucky he stays, if he does he plays)
pienaar (i really like him and hope he plays but deuofeu can play on the wing, he should play but can't be guaranteed)
OSMAN (although there is competition can't see him being trroubled, pulls the chords)
MIRALLAS (don't know where he will play but he will play)
gibson (before the season I thought he would be nailed on but now I'm not so sure, he works well with Osman at the back)
barkley (another fan favourite, WE LOVE HIM, very young and may struggle to get into the team)

    KONE (Martinez favourite, no doubt)
jelavic (scored a brace the other day so maybe coming into form, if he is he will play, watch him in the U.S)
vellios (surprising enough I think he could well play under Martinez, getting a lot more attention than other forwards under Martinez)
deulofeu (won't start or the 1st half of the season but will worm his way in somewhere from January)

Well, there you go - not assertive but there you go.....

Will have to watch them in the USA

    🙂

Not sure about Howard. I think Robles is a firm Martinez favourite too and can see him usurping Howard soon, if not from the start. Howard generally likes to hoof the ball, and Robles is better with his distribution/playing from the back, which is what i think Martinez prefers.

just looking at that excellent 2 way rotation spreadsheet. It is very good but doesn't take into account your main defenders(I know this would be impossible to do). Sometimes your 2 main defenders would be on the bench depending on fixture.

When you work out your rotation DEF's do any of you take this into account?

The argument in my team is, who will score the most points out of Bale & Morrison, or Navas/Silva/Coutinho & Walcott

      I'm leaning toward no

Can we read anything into Zaha being replaced on 80 mins by Van Persie . . . ? Is Zaha being groomed for a more forward role?

Thoughts on this team out of 10?
    Mignolet (4.0)
Cole, Alcaraz, Collins (Clyne, B. Turner)
    Hazard, Coutinho, Walcott, Mirallas (Thomas)
    RVP, RVW, Anelka

Anelka is quite underpriced, imo. Surprised that I dont see him in as many teams around here.

I wil not have him for GW1. Yet I will keep a close eye on him : if he does not start the season, he may drop in price and be a bargain, come GW3/4.

They'll get similar points I would imagine, but Cout is 1m cheaper

Not sure about set pieces but Caz gets on a few corners and occassionally FK's although Wally takes the majority.

I would say neither, Walcott instead

coinflip for me, Caz with the slight adv.

I would take Cout + the $1MM to start

you could always have both assuming your going to dump Hazard / Mata after GW2
