Steve Bruce continued his summer shopping spree late last week by acquiring Yannick Sagbo from French club Evian. The Ivory Coast international arrives at the KC Stadium on a two-year contract for a reported fee of £3m and is the Tigers’ eighth signing of the close-season as Bruce bolsters his squad after a second place finish in last season’s Championship.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old – who is the half-brother of West Ham’s Guy Demel – went on the charm offensive as he spoke about his intentions for the season ahead:

“I can’t wait to get going, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates this weekend. I want to show the coaches and the fans what I’m all about, but not just with my physical presence. I also hope that my mobility and technical skills can add to what is already a good footballing team. I was delighted when the call came through. I had a very good feeling from the manager, that he really wanted me to come to Hull. That feeling was mutual. I am excited to get started in the Premier League. It is a league that I’ve watched closely, and I know all about it. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I aim to score many goals.”

The History

A product of the Monaco youth academy, Sagbo turned out 20 times for the club between 2009 and 2010 but failed to find the net once. Snapped up by then-second division French side Evian prior to the closure of the 2010/11 summer transfer window, his contribution of nine goals and five assists in 31 appearances helped his new club clinch promotion to Ligue 1.

Over a couple of campaigns in France’s top-flight, Sagbo’s scoring record has been respectable, if somewhat less than prolific – 16 goals and nine assists from 68 matches, though 15 of those appearances arrived off the bench. On the international stage, he has notched twice in five games for the Ivory Coast Under 23s and has featured once for the Elephants’ senior side.

The Prospects

With Hull expected to retain their 3-5-2 formation for the season ahead, Sagbo is likely to be tasked with partnering Danny Graham up top, climbing ahead of the likes of Sone Aluko, George Boyd and Matty Fryatt in the pecking order. Bruce is desperate to increase the Tigers’ firepower after they notched a mere 61 goals in 46 games in the Championship last term – bearing in mind Hull have scored once in their last three pre-season games (courtesy of a converted spot-kick), their failings in attack are already obvious.

The Hull boss was quick to praise his new recruit, though, and suggested the addition of Sagbo will afford his side a more physical dimension up front:

“He is something different to what we have got. You look at (Christian) Benteke before he went to Aston Villa, he didn’t have a prolific goalscoring record but he had all the attributes to play in the Premier league. He is big, strong, powerful and quick, and our boy is a little bit like that too.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of around 5.0 seems the likeliest scenario for the Ivory Coast international – while Graham is the most expensive Hull forward option at 5.5, his initial cost was set as a Sunderland player.

Given their current toils in attack, it’s perhaps debatable as to whether many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Hull as a viable source of attacking points, though their opening home schedule affords Bruce’s side a decent chance to make a mark, with Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace the first six visitors to the KC. Results in these games will surely be vital to their chances of beating the drop.

Indeed, pairing Sagbo with a Crystal Palace option would give you 11 kind looking home fixtures (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, CPL, WHM, CAR) in the opening 15 Gameweeks – an option for those considering a rotation partnership with Eagles forward Dwight Gayle (5.0) or winger Jerome Thomas, who comes in even cheaper at just 4.5 following his move from West Brom earlier in the summer.

    RMT ?/10?

    Mignolet

    Collins - Luiz - Clyne

    Bale (vc) - Hazard (c) - Walcott - Coutinho

    Berbatov - Lukaku - Anelka

    Subs: Boruc, Turner, Turner, Koren.

Planning to take out Luiz and Lukaku after DGW to put in Mertesacker and Sturridge. Opinions?

If you are planning to rotate Migs and Boruc, I'd just get Westwood/Mannone (whoever of the two look like starting) and get Toure over Clyne/Collins if you want Pool cover. You're gonna have to sacrifice one of your expensive mids too, I know Coutinho has done well but I'd downgrade him to someone like Snodgrass and upgrade Berbatov to Aguero?

    For those of you planning a WC for gw2 after the dgw . . . . .

I don't know who you are. But i know what you want. If you're looking for short term gains, I can tell you, you will get a few, not many... I wont be sitting smug on my falsly acuired early lead but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let your brain have a say and save it, that will be the end of it - I will not look for you, I will not pursue you... but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you... and I will kick your ass in a multi DGW after xmas

    Good Luck

Now do one with Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Aguero and Lukaku.

Don't get me wrong, these are good teams but I think you are looking for too much strength in depth. Having Mirallas and Snodgrass as your 4th/5th mids is too much imho. With Bale, Hazard and Walcott, you probably want to be looking at the Snodgrass price range for No4 and then get a proper bench-warmer for No5.

Anelka - perfectly acceptable but I would be tempted more by JRod for a little extra cash. Wouldn't blame you for picking either but I see an extra 10pts in the latter making the extra spend worth it for me.
Terry - Probably the selection I would most question here. I don't think he'll get the game time you want. Looks like a DGW punt but the rotation risk problem doesn't go away because he has two games.
GK - Not all that thrilled by the rotations here. You must be looking for save points because I don't see a lot of clean sheets for either.

but i have a dilema if bale goes i need rvp if bale stays and rvp is doing low then i could transfer the funds on midfield.
any good alternative for RvP then?

Frank Lampard, a viable option for the DGW??

Frank Lampard might just turn out to be a very good punt for the DGW. Now I am aware of Jose Mourinho's comments on Lampard not being 27 anymore and that he cant play 60 games a season. But come to think of it, Lamps might just start both the games of the DGW.

Chelsea have Hull and Villa at home followed by a "tougher" opponent with United at OT. Start of the season, Mourinho would like to win and give the likes of Hazard, KDB, Schurrle the license to do their thing in the attacking third with Lampard playing deep, with spot kicks still in his pocket. Herein features Lampard- trying to dictate play from deep and proving to be the known quantity who would get Mou's message on the pitch and basically, being a very good mediator. The fact that he has played for Jose COULD be a significant factor in easing in with the new talents, later on in the season.

The reason why he COULD ALSO feature in the Villa game is because it would the start of the season and he would be fit enough to play 2 games in 3 days. It is at OT where Jose would need energy in midfield with Ramires and Mikel or Van Ginkel even, starting. The first two games he could "Afford" to play Frank along with somebody else.

Thus to conclude, easing in of the new talents is the one thing that we Chelsea fans are quite sure of. This increases the the chances of Frank starting for both Villa and Hull..

PS- As is evident, this is just my thinking and penalties is probably his only ally.

    Cheers

Not convinced. You might get some decent points for one week based on a punt but you still have a player in your team that you'll have to transfer out. It's worth factoring in the 4pt hit you'll take to make this transfer - because you can also be sure that you'll need that transfer elsewhere

But then you have to consider it both ways actually. IF Lamps ends up getting 14+ points for the 1st week, you'd probably be sentimental enough to bench him and make a transfer elsewhere. All about permutations. I think having him has a really good upside to it

In response to 2nd Mans wonderful RMT post earlier. (RMT Prof machine that is)

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/5126767

The important quote, "The coefficient on RMT's projection was 1.067 (i.e. 1 RMT point is worth 1.067 actual FPL points, so the RMT model under-predicts points) with a whopping R2 of 95.7% which makes me feel I've made a mistake in the model."

"The coefficient on RMT's projection was 1.067" - pretty well covered by 2nd Mans. Its only explains the gradient of the line of best fit. As he says RMT underpredicts your score by a tiny 7%.

    THE IMPORTANT BIT

    "whopping R2 of 95.7%" more commonly written as 0.96 - R^2 is Pearsons correlation coefficient. Its describes the quality of correlation. Aka how good is RMT at predicting points week in week out. A R^2 of 1 or -1 would mean it was bang on. A value of 0 would mean there was no relationship, and the RMT model was useless. This graph visualises it all;

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Correlation_examples2.svg

As you can see a R^2 of 0.96 is ridiculously accurate. I'd question 2nd Mans analysis until someone checked it personally, but there you have it. Hope this helped.

Here is an explanation of R^2 or Pearsons correlation coefficient.

Possible too that Martinez may opt for 4-4-2 away from home for more defensive resolve and roll out the 3-4-3 in Goodison?
