Steve Bruce continued his summer shopping spree late last week by acquiring Yannick Sagbo from French club Evian. The Ivory Coast international arrives at the KC Stadium on a two-year contract for a reported fee of £3m and is the Tigers’ eighth signing of the close-season as Bruce bolsters his squad after a second place finish in last season’s Championship.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old – who is the half-brother of West Ham’s Guy Demel – went on the charm offensive as he spoke about his intentions for the season ahead:

“I can’t wait to get going, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates this weekend. I want to show the coaches and the fans what I’m all about, but not just with my physical presence. I also hope that my mobility and technical skills can add to what is already a good footballing team. I was delighted when the call came through. I had a very good feeling from the manager, that he really wanted me to come to Hull. That feeling was mutual. I am excited to get started in the Premier League. It is a league that I’ve watched closely, and I know all about it. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I aim to score many goals.”

The History

A product of the Monaco youth academy, Sagbo turned out 20 times for the club between 2009 and 2010 but failed to find the net once. Snapped up by then-second division French side Evian prior to the closure of the 2010/11 summer transfer window, his contribution of nine goals and five assists in 31 appearances helped his new club clinch promotion to Ligue 1.

Over a couple of campaigns in France’s top-flight, Sagbo’s scoring record has been respectable, if somewhat less than prolific – 16 goals and nine assists from 68 matches, though 15 of those appearances arrived off the bench. On the international stage, he has notched twice in five games for the Ivory Coast Under 23s and has featured once for the Elephants’ senior side.

The Prospects

With Hull expected to retain their 3-5-2 formation for the season ahead, Sagbo is likely to be tasked with partnering Danny Graham up top, climbing ahead of the likes of Sone Aluko, George Boyd and Matty Fryatt in the pecking order. Bruce is desperate to increase the Tigers’ firepower after they notched a mere 61 goals in 46 games in the Championship last term – bearing in mind Hull have scored once in their last three pre-season games (courtesy of a converted spot-kick), their failings in attack are already obvious.

The Hull boss was quick to praise his new recruit, though, and suggested the addition of Sagbo will afford his side a more physical dimension up front:

“He is something different to what we have got. You look at (Christian) Benteke before he went to Aston Villa, he didn’t have a prolific goalscoring record but he had all the attributes to play in the Premier league. He is big, strong, powerful and quick, and our boy is a little bit like that too.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of around 5.0 seems the likeliest scenario for the Ivory Coast international – while Graham is the most expensive Hull forward option at 5.5, his initial cost was set as a Sunderland player.

Given their current toils in attack, it’s perhaps debatable as to whether many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Hull as a viable source of attacking points, though their opening home schedule affords Bruce’s side a decent chance to make a mark, with Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace the first six visitors to the KC. Results in these games will surely be vital to their chances of beating the drop.

Indeed, pairing Sagbo with a Crystal Palace option would give you 11 kind looking home fixtures (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, CPL, WHM, CAR) in the opening 15 Gameweeks – an option for those considering a rotation partnership with Eagles forward Dwight Gayle (5.0) or winger Jerome Thomas, who comes in even cheaper at just 4.5 following his move from West Brom earlier in the summer.

A solid front-line but I have one criticism - they are all obvious picks with high ownership. If they flop in the first couple of weeks, their value will plummet due to all of the sales.

Maybe try to add a differential in there.

7.5 seems great value for them tho

Nolan a better bet at 7.0.

A couple of less obvious ones around that price are:

Giaccherini (Sun) who I think could be a bargain at 7.0

Zaha (Mun) who, judging by his pre-season performances, could quickly nail down a place at United and looks the business

Not really pre-planning much though. Only intending to get rid of Chelsea players before their blank GW and to bring in MNU cover for Palace at home. Whether people pre-plan that or not, I suspect the majority will have that kind of transfer activity. GW5 onwards I'll have a clearer picture of bandwagons etc.

Is Bale/Van Persie an FPL must?

Originally i didn't have Bale or RVP in my team because i thought that bale would be unhappy and his performance levels would decline and that RVP was overpriced.

Do you all think that you must have one pf the two? And if so, which one?

Not at all. There is no such thing as a 'must have'.

It's all a myth. There is a large enough selection of players that you can do well without 2 of the big names.

Haz, Silva, Cout, Walcott, Mata, Santi, Aguero are all good enough to match Bale or RVPs scores on their given day.

        RVP beats bale hands down!

Rvp = the filter point tru which all manu goals must pass = points machine + consistant = season captain

Bale = fantastic player in a team that is now full of fantastatic players. He isnt the focal point anymore. Especially if they sign a new top class stricker.

Rvp will replicate last season or improve

Bale will get 50 points less

People seem to be choosing Jerome Thomas as the 4.5 midfield option. I suspect people will question your Colback choice for this very reason. Personally I reckon Colback will play much more than Thomas. Don't even think Thomas will start regularly.

The point of a 4.5 mid is to never play them unless you need to.

Spending an extra 1.0 on a 5th mid that will never play is just silly.

Anyone think there is good value in Snodgrass 6.5m, Aspas 7.0m, Mignolet 5.5m, Mertasaker 5.5m, Collins 4.5m.

I find these guys value's will increase pretty quickly and am basing my team built around these blokes....

I think they are some of the better cheaper option, but actually think most of them are close to the right price.

Collins is nicely priced and there could be value in Aspas... I think the rest are about right. Migs would have been 6.0 if known starter at Liverpool, so immediate half of value.

The likes of Snodgrass is the right price. He's the best in that price bracket sure, but entitled to be no more. The next 2 levels the likes of Nolan and Mirallas much better propositions.

I think you're missing Sissoko from your list, who is terrific value imo

more press nonsense but man it would be a HUGE spanner in the works if Bale is to go. What a start to the season if the one must-have leaves on top of a DGW confirmation. i don't remember it being this crazy in years gone by. the days of just trying to fit in all of Lamps, Gerrard, Fabregas and Ronaldo

RE: DILKS RMT at the top of the last page.....

I notice your team is identical to mine with a few alterations

    Yours: Mignolet, Clyne
    Mine: Davis, GJohnson

Play Boruc first choice - the points total you'll receive with the backup of Davis will should equal that of Mignolet and use money saved to get GJ - attacking returns will far outstrip Clyne

    Yours: Turner, Walcott, Berbatov
    Mine: Chester, Zaha, Aguero

Walcott, yes I would like, but Zaha will be in the top 6-8 mids end of season, for 6.5 is bargain and pays for Aguero with a downgrade of MTurner to Chester - he's at the back of the bench and Bruce tends to keep it tight anyway

Don't u think that solves your Problem of attacking firepower?

      Goalie - Migs is solid.

Defence - Cole dgw, collins and mert should both produce well for there price point.

Midfield - Haz, Walcott will produce high returns. Couti is still unproven but from everything I read and watched should be up with the elite by the end of the season. Oscar is an expensive (8.5) punt. He could start or not start. I would give it a couple games weeks to see how chelsea will line up and who is favoured for what position before I through 8.5 in Oscar (Silva will be much better). Could be a relatively inexpensive way into Chelsea offence.

Forward - Aguero will produce, he is a bit of a rotation risk but is the most nailed on of the forwards. Altidore is unproven though he should start fairly regularly again imo I would wait and see how Sunderland line up. J-rod could be the deal of the pool. I prefer Lambert but j-rod is a great value.

Only thing that worries me is no Bale or RVP. Those are two huge differential players.

      Looks pretty good to me.

Have a plan for swapping anelka around GW5. He will hopefully gained some value and WBA will have a tough run.
