Steve Bruce continued his summer shopping spree late last week by acquiring Yannick Sagbo from French club Evian. The Ivory Coast international arrives at the KC Stadium on a two-year contract for a reported fee of £3m and is the Tigers’ eighth signing of the close-season as Bruce bolsters his squad after a second place finish in last season’s Championship.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old – who is the half-brother of West Ham’s Guy Demel – went on the charm offensive as he spoke about his intentions for the season ahead:

“I can’t wait to get going, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates this weekend. I want to show the coaches and the fans what I’m all about, but not just with my physical presence. I also hope that my mobility and technical skills can add to what is already a good footballing team. I was delighted when the call came through. I had a very good feeling from the manager, that he really wanted me to come to Hull. That feeling was mutual. I am excited to get started in the Premier League. It is a league that I’ve watched closely, and I know all about it. I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I aim to score many goals.”

The History

A product of the Monaco youth academy, Sagbo turned out 20 times for the club between 2009 and 2010 but failed to find the net once. Snapped up by then-second division French side Evian prior to the closure of the 2010/11 summer transfer window, his contribution of nine goals and five assists in 31 appearances helped his new club clinch promotion to Ligue 1.

Over a couple of campaigns in France’s top-flight, Sagbo’s scoring record has been respectable, if somewhat less than prolific – 16 goals and nine assists from 68 matches, though 15 of those appearances arrived off the bench. On the international stage, he has notched twice in five games for the Ivory Coast Under 23s and has featured once for the Elephants’ senior side.

The Prospects

With Hull expected to retain their 3-5-2 formation for the season ahead, Sagbo is likely to be tasked with partnering Danny Graham up top, climbing ahead of the likes of Sone Aluko, George Boyd and Matty Fryatt in the pecking order. Bruce is desperate to increase the Tigers’ firepower after they notched a mere 61 goals in 46 games in the Championship last term – bearing in mind Hull have scored once in their last three pre-season games (courtesy of a converted spot-kick), their failings in attack are already obvious.

The Hull boss was quick to praise his new recruit, though, and suggested the addition of Sagbo will afford his side a more physical dimension up front:

“He is something different to what we have got. You look at (Christian) Benteke before he went to Aston Villa, he didn’t have a prolific goalscoring record but he had all the attributes to play in the Premier league. He is big, strong, powerful and quick, and our boy is a little bit like that too.”

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a price of around 5.0 seems the likeliest scenario for the Ivory Coast international – while Graham is the most expensive Hull forward option at 5.5, his initial cost was set as a Sunderland player.

Given their current toils in attack, it’s perhaps debatable as to whether many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Hull as a viable source of attacking points, though their opening home schedule affords Bruce’s side a decent chance to make a mark, with Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa, Sunderland and Palace the first six visitors to the KC. Results in these games will surely be vital to their chances of beating the drop.

Indeed, pairing Sagbo with a Crystal Palace option would give you 11 kind looking home fixtures (NOR, SUN, CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL, SUN, CPL, WHM, CAR) in the opening 15 Gameweeks – an option for those considering a rotation partnership with Eagles forward Dwight Gayle (5.0) or winger Jerome Thomas, who comes in even cheaper at just 4.5 following his move from West Brom earlier in the summer.

I am also set to start with a city attacker over RVP and leave enough money in the bank for RVP.

If by "pick of the bunch'' you mean most nailed on defender, yes, he's soon to be named vice captain I believe, but I'd prefer to own Johnson for the flair factor, he won't miss many games.

True, think I read on here somewhere that Agger was very near the top of the new BPS system as applied to last season - there was only 10 points between them I think as it was even

I think Coutinho's a better player but I know Sturridge is more selfish and that is what makes a great FPL player!

If Sturridge is fully fit he could potentially be one of the league's top scorers (I am biased), But I do think Coutinho could be a good differential, I think my logic comes down to the fact I can't find many strikers that I think will do well and I can find many midfielders that will do well, and because I have to choose between them I'll go for the one with the most demand 😀

Ha ha fair enough! Secret option three is to go for Coutinho AND Sturridge I guess; at the moment I've Coutinho and Aspas though. Saw the Taiwan game the other night, Coutinho looked to be heavily involved in most good things that happened! Mr. Rogers could have a nice selection headache when Sturridge is fit and if Suarez stays he'll need a lot of panadol every Friday....!! The other thing to note is that Coutinho playes about 40% less minutes than Sturridge but got 40% more assists.....

Anyone to guess the Man City defense lineup for GW1?

    Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy?

But of course it could be others.....want to have City cover, but don't sure who to pick? The forwards are too risky, and I think also the midfield, except for yaya maybe....so, only 100% starters could be Hart, Kompany, Yaya ? 🙁

So many mentioning Luiz as Chelseas best defensive option and I just don't get it. Don't see him as nailed on at all. Not really a Mourinho type player and Mourinho himself has said that he needs to work on his decision making as a defender. Doesn't really bode well for his starting prospects...

Hull team to face Peterborough: Harper, Chester, Davies, Bruce, Figueroa, Elmohamady, Meyler, Quinn, Boyd, Aluko, Graham.

Looks pretty much 1st choice, bar the goalkeeper. Not sure about Davies/Bruce..?

I know nothing is set in stone yet but experimentation if Bale leaves for Madrid:

    Cech / 4.0

    Mertesacker / Toure / Collins / Chester / BenTurner

    Coutinho* / Hazard / Walcott / Mirallas / Thomas

    Aguero / Berbatov / Lukaku

Coutinho may swap for Gerrard, dont intend to go with RVP in the initial weeks due to Aguero fixtures

I know City attack is a minefield but I'm willing to take the chance due to their opening fixtures.

I feel like Dzeko and Negredo are similar ish players so one of those will partner Aguero up top while Jovetic is more of a playmaker behind/on the wing (he said this was his favoured position).

So Dzeko/Negredo rotation and Jovetic more withdrawn, Aguero is their best player IMO and is capable of scoring and assisting.

Im going Cole myself after his comments that he feels he owes Mourinho etc, I think there is a good chance he will step it up a bit. He also seemed to score better when playing under Mourinho previously. Some put that down to age/youth. Im not convinced it was just that. Anyway, As long as chelsea rack up the clean sheets there will be many happy campers in here

When comparing Miralles with Baines does anyone else compare them by dividing the minutes on pitch with points earned - or I am just that sad lolz....

    Baines - 3420 mins / 177 points = 19.32 mins/point..

    Miralles - 1827 / 95 mins = 19.23 mins/point..

In fairness I dont do this all the time....

Yes, it's the most accurate in terms of determining points earned in proportion to time on the pitch. That's what I meant. In other words, more accurate than PPG. It's not supposed be a measure of how long a player will play for.

hahahah a relation to Guy who plays up front. Agree - Essential.

Can't believe how much this pre-season and DGW is messing with my head. Currently a starting forward line of Lukaku Aspas Weimann

that's when you know it's time to reset team...

Only just realised after this summer of Gareth Bale orientated hype that my beloved Saints renegotiated with Tottenham due to our financial probelms and swapped our 25% sell on clause for a few million up front. Could cost us £20 million! Ouch!

Think about it, if you hadn't taken the few million up front your club may be non-existent right now.

Oh of course, and back then Bale was even being booed by Tottenham fans for poor performances! Just an interesting point in what could be a world record transfer.

Lol. Ive got Lukaku but Dzeko gives me spondoolies. Just not sure wether or not to read too much into Pellegrinis comments regarding him, Would give me a really well balanced team.

Good point but the issue is no matter how much he scores, they've just spent, what, £40 mill+ on two marquee forwards, so how much game time is Dzeko really going to get, and will it be in the competition that matters for FPL??
